Your Community Foundation celebrated its 15th anniversary lastfall. We took a look back noting how the Community Foundationbegan with enthusiasm and $1,050. Working with people commit-ted to making a difference in their communities, your CommunityFoundation’s charitable assets have grown enabling us to grantmore than $1.9 million to date throughout the region. That’s a goodstart. We know we can do more. So, we announced the CountyEndowment Match, a grand opportunity for growing permanentendowment for worthy causes. To date, residents in at least five ofour counties are coming together to build their county’s endow-ment. They serve on their County Fund Councils raising moneythat will support charitable needs and opportunities in their coun-ties for good—forever.

The number ‘15’ took on special significance during last fall’s Friends of Philanthropy Celebration.The annual event was held on November 15, National Philanthropy Day. Guests were treated to festively decorated (and delicious) cupcakes marking the Com-
munity Foundation’s 15th ‘birthday.’At 6:15 p.m., Board Chair Brian Ippensen announced that the Community Foundation was commemorating its anniversary by offering up to $15,000 to each of
the counties it serves as a matching gift opportunity. To obtain the match, a county has to raise $15,000 to begin its own County Endowment Fund. “Whether we live in Lewis County Missouri or Pike County Illinois, we share a common wish— to preserve, maintain or improve our communities and county,”
said Ippensen. “This match can bring people together to support local charitable needs and opportunities in each of our own counties. It will help retain local assetsfor today and tomorrow—permanently—for each county.”
Counties must submit their Intent to Participate form by November 1, 2013 to be accepted into the County Endowment Match program. To date, five countieshave done so and have been accepted. Each has until November 1, 2015 to raise $15,000 for its match.

Don Kirk and Jim Gay had a desire to build an endowment fortheir county. Others soon joined them, formed the Pike County FundCouncil and established the Pike County Endowment. The first grantfrom the fund was made in 2012.
Your community fundation began with anabundance of enthusiasm & two gifts totaling$1,050. By 2001, your Community Foundation held $500,000 in assets.

Community Foundation offers 15th anniversary gift
Don Kirk and Jim Gay knew assets had left Pike County. They lamented those losses. Theydiscussed how to retain assets for their county’s residents and wellbeing. They had few answers.
Then, they learned how charitable giving had grown dramatically in some communities throughendowment funds. It ignited a spark.
They wondered whether the same could be done in Pike County—and how. They consideredseveral options before approaching their Community Foundation. Working together would servethe county’s interests and the Community Foundation’s mission to connect people who care withcauses that matter. A pilot program began to establish and build a Pike County Endowment.
Don and Jim formed the Pike County Fund Council and invited others to get involved. A few ofthe county’s residents and businesses made contributions. As they did, others started to realizethat their county endowment fund helps retain local assets. More people got involved which ledto more gifts. The fund’s first grant was made in 2012.
No magic formula. No match. Lots of work and dedication. Pike County residents continue tobuild the fund to meet the $15,000 match knowing that the county led the way for others.

Through a grant to Pleasant HillElementary School, students wereable to access to one-on-one tutoringto improve their reading and compre-hension skills. The lack of those skillsis a source of difficulty in making aca-demic progress.
Children participating in the tutor-ing program had special needs or
came from situations in which theymay not have had the home supportto help them with their homeworkassignments.
“By providing an extra 15-20 min-utes of time with these students, wecould provide a higher level of educa-tional services. The children were pro-vided with a comfortable and positiveenvironment to assist them in com-pleting assignments that would nothave existed in their normal life,” saidJeff Shireman, Dean of Students atPleasant Hill Elementary.

In turn, the overabundant deer population in thearea plagues farmers with crop damage and driverswith high rates of vehicular collisions. The seeminglyunrelated problems led Two Rivers Resource Con-servation & Development and its partners to createAccess Food.
“The project encourages hunters to take a doe tohelp control the deer population while at the sametime providing much-needed meat for food pantries.It covers the costs of donating a deer and distributingthe meat,” said Brenda Middendorf, Executive Direc-tor of Two Rivers Resource Conservation & Develop-ment.

“The grant had a tremendous impact. Over 4,500people were served with protein products,” said Mid-dendorf. In addition, the program achieved the fol-lowing results:
• 5,400 pounds of meat were donated to needyfamilies,
• hunters were educated about the need to takeresponsibility for controlling the deer population, and
• deer population was reduced, decreasing cropdamage and the number of vehicular accidents.

KIM teaches values through work, service“Kids In Motion has made me a better person
because I learned how to get along with others, toalways do my best, and to be more responsible,”wrote one Kids In Motion participant.
Kids In Motion, a program of Douglass Communi-ty Services based in Hannibal, is a pre-employmentand service learning opportunity for youth betweenthe ages of 12-15. The program serves identified at-risk youth and emphasizes work ethic through ser-vice to others.
Community Foundation grants have assisted inserving additional youth and helped fulfill the organi-zation’s mission of “teaching teens to value work, tovalue their community and to value their future.”
Another KIM kid, as they are often referred,emphasized how the work ethic taught in the pro-gram will help her throughout her life. “Kids In Motionis a life-long learning experience. You really learn
how to work and how to do it right. From when I firststarted, until now have been the best years of mylife,” she wrote.
The program has also helped students overcomenegative influences. “I was chosen for the Kids InMotion program while other kids were not. They aremaking bad choices, like getting high and drunk, hav-ing babies, getting abused by boyfriends and more.We KIM kids have the opportunity to have freedom,work, and the ability to choose the right path in life,”wrote another KIM participant.
Last summer, the KIM students donated proceedsthey earned from a window wash to the CommunityFoundation. They did so to express their gratitude fora grant from the Samantha Otte Youth OpportunityFund after learning more about Sammy.

Through a grant to Pleasant HillElementary School, students wereable to access to one-on-one tutoringto improve their reading and compre-hension skills. The lack of those skillsis a source of difficulty in making aca-demic progress.
Children participating in the tutor-ing program had special needs or
came from situations in which theymay not have had the home supportto help them with their homeworkassignments.
“By providing an extra 15-20 min-utes of time with these students, wecould provide a higher level of educa-tional services. The children were pro-vided with a comfortable and positiveenvironment to assist them in com-pleting assignments that would nothave existed in their normal life,” saidJeff Shireman, Dean of Students atPleasant Hill Elementary.

The number ‘15’ took on special significance during last fall’s Friends of Philanthropy Celebration.The annual event was held on November 15, National Philanthropy Day. Guests were treated to festively decorated (and delicious) cupcakes marking the Com-
munity Foundation’s 15th ‘birthday.’At 6:15 p.m., Board Chair Brian Ippensen announced that the Community Foundation was commemorating its anniversary by offering up to $15,000 to each of
the counties it serves as a matching gift opportunity. To obtain the match, a county has to raise $15,000 to begin its own County Endowment Fund. “Whether we live in Lewis County Missouri or Pike County Illinois, we share a common wish— to preserve, maintain or improve our communities and county,”
said Ippensen. “This match can bring people together to support local charitable needs and opportunities in each of our own counties. It will help retain local assetsfor today and tomorrow—permanently—for each county.”
Counties must submit their Intent to Participate form by November 1, 2013 to be accepted into the County Endowment Match program. To date, five countieshave done so and have been accepted. Each has until November 1, 2015 to raise $15,000 for its match.

Don Kirk and Jim Gay had a desire to build an endowment fortheir county. Others soon joined them, formed the Pike County FundCouncil and established the Pike County Endowment. The first grantfrom the fund was made in 2012.
Your community fundation began with anabundance of enthusiasm & two gifts totaling$1,050. By 2001, your Community Foundation held $500,000 in assets.

Community Foundation offers 15th anniversary gift
Don Kirk and Jim Gay knew assets had left Pike County. They lamented those losses. Theydiscussed how to retain assets for their county’s residents and wellbeing. They had few answers.
Then, they learned how charitable giving had grown dramatically in some communities throughendowment funds. It ignited a spark.
They wondered whether the same could be done in Pike County—and how. They consideredseveral options before approaching their Community Foundation. Working together would servethe county’s interests and the Community Foundation’s mission to connect people who care withcauses that matter. A pilot program began to establish and build a Pike County Endowment.
Don and Jim formed the Pike County Fund Council and invited others to get involved. A few ofthe county’s residents and businesses made contributions. As they did, others started to realizethat their county endowment fund helps retain local assets. More people got involved which ledto more gifts. The fund’s first grant was made in 2012.
No magic formula. No match. Lots of work and dedication. Pike County residents continue tobuild the fund to meet the $15,000 match knowing that the county led the way for others.

Your Community Foundation celebrated its 15th anniversary lastfall. We took a look back noting how the Community Foundationbegan with enthusiasm and $1,050. Working with people commit-ted to making a difference in their communities, your CommunityFoundation’s charitable assets have grown enabling us to grantmore than $1.9 million to date throughout the region. That’s a goodstart. We know we can do more. So, we announced the CountyEndowment Match, a grand opportunity for growing permanentendowment for worthy causes. To date, residents in at least five ofour counties are coming together to build their county’s endow-ment. They serve on their County Fund Councils raising moneythat will support charitable needs and opportunities in their coun-ties for good—forever.
