Sugar-Crusted Bara Brith (start this recipe the day before). Ingredients 400g mixed fruit 75g dried cranberries Mug of strong, hot black tea 100g Butter plus extra for greasing 2 heaped tbsp orange marmalade 2 eggs, beaten 450g self-raising flour – try a mix of wholemeal and white 175g light soft brown sugar 1tsp each ground cinnamon and ground ginger 4 tbsp milk 50g crushed sugar cubes or granulated sugar to decorate Method Pour the hot black tea over the mixed dried fruit and cranberries. Sprinkle with the crushed sugar cubes, or other sugar and bake for 1-1.25 hours until dark golden and skewer comes out clean. Cover loosely with foil if it starts to over- colour before the middle is cooked. Leave in tin to cool completely and serve sliced. This tastes even better spread with butter. For added flavour when soaking the fruit overnight we used Tea for Toodyay’s Summer Berries Tea made from strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. It was absolutely delicious, but the traditional Welsh Bara Brith uses any ordinary tea. LOCAL WA NATIONALS MP Shane Love joined about 30 guests at the Men’s Shed on Toodyay Road last month to present a Lotterywest grant for $199,504.00 to help build a new Men’s Shed at the Old Works Depot in Harper Street, Toodyay. The presentation was made to Toodyay Men’s Shed Chairman Jeff Roberts. Mr Love who was representing WA Premier Colin Barnett, said Lotterywest grants were

possible because of ongoing support from retailers and people who buy lottery tickets, enabling Lotterywest to distribute $281 million to the WA community in 2015/16. This included $119 million to 814 community organisations. Mr Love congratulated Toodyay Men’s Shed in achieving this milestone and offered his personal ongoing support. Mr Roberts thanked all those in attendance and reflected on the difficulties experienced in getting this far in the process.

He thanked Mr Love for making the presentation and also remarked on the help and assistance provided by the current shire councillors and staff who attended along with members of the Shed. Mr Roberts paid tribute to Men’s Shed member Fred Fellowes for his valuable input to the project and wished him well in recovering from a recent illness. The ce lebra t ion conc luded wi th refreshments prepared by his good lady, Di Roberts.

I AM BACK. Welcome to the mad month of July. Things have been happening at a frightening pace – they must, to keep ahead of the cold. I hope you have all survived and are ready to face still more of this weather for a little while longer, although I for one look forward to the onset of spring. Toodyay Men’s Shed could not be at the Toodyay Farmers Market last month as we were a bit light on for numbers. What with me coming good and others seeking treatment for assorted complaints, perhaps we will improve with age like old wine and be able to mount a stall in the month of August. My sincere thanks to the guys who are helping out and making the lives of those who are not so good, feel better. To anyone down for the count, get well soon and enjoy the good life again. The 2016 Avon Descent is with us and members of the Mens’ Shed will be pulling their weight at this event as always, doing the right thing by the community. The Toodyay Men’s Shed Lotterywest grant for the construction of our new premises at the old works depot in Harper Street is covered in the story on this page. This grant is the culmination of seven years of work by the Committee of Management and a load of thanks is due to anyone who contributed in any small way to this result. Our next breakfast will be at the Shed and we anticipate the usual good roll up. Our new shed is now in the advanced stage of its planning and once a builder has been engaged it will be full steam ahead. Should you want information on the Toodyay Men’s Shed please ring Jeff on 9574 2498 or Phil on 9574 5426. Don’t hesitate, come and have a chat and a cuppa with us.

Watch out for three horned

Weed of the MonthJacqueline Lucas

THREE HORNED BEDSTRAW (Galium tricornutum) has had a recent Department of Agriculture and Food WA fact sheet published about it. It is a threat to both bushland and agriculture in WA and its presence needs to be reported to the Pest and Diseases Information Service. Three horned bedstraw is a member of the coffee family and is also known as rough corn or rough fruit bedstraw and corn cleavers. The department is concerned because it is a major weed in crops in south eastern Australia and conditions are suitable in south west WA for its establishment. According to Florabase, it has already been reported in the local government areas of Boddington, Cranbrook, Merredin and Plantagenet. Three horned bedstraw is a competitive climbing plant that forms dense masses of vegetation in crops, wasteland and along fence lines. There are more control options when it is growing in cereal crops. The plants have weak straggly, climbing branched stems up to 1.5m long and numerous hooked prickles on the stem and leaves produce a sticky sensation when touched. The leaves form in circular patterns around the square, hollow stems in groups of six to eight, have no stalk and are also covered in hairs and backward facing prickles.

WOULD YOU agree that if you lived in a dry, hot part of the world with a seemingly decreasing annual rainfall, mud as a play medium for youngsters is as rare and alluring as snow and snowballs might be? The School Holiday Tree Planting Program held in mid-July on a refreshingly sunny day on a prepared site between Extracts and the River Avon, attracted a number of enthusiastic and excited families. A big thank you to Bethan Lloyd’s Toodyay Friends of the River (TFOR) seed orchard team that nurtured trays of appropriate native species. Unlike the June plantings of 4000 native seedlings placed into welcoming moist soil along the Bilya Track by the TFOR a few weeks earlier, our school kids were faced with the challenge of trying to plant into sticky clay and pure mud. Undaunted, they and their brave parents cheerfully abandoned conventional tree planting methods, surrendered any attempts at preserving their clean footwear and accepted the challenge of getting 400 seedlings into the soggy, sticky soil. They did it, by fair means or foul, and had lots of fun. Not only have they contributed to improving the vista of this part of the Avon River track, but they have provided a valuable future habitat for local bird and insect life as well. In other news the funding for the 2017 Folewood Road/Burns Brook Rehab-ilitation Project has now been confirmed and planning for this major project is already underway. Burns Brook, a tributary of the Avon and

part of the area burnt in the 2009 fire, has become severely eroded and weed infested. Would you be willing to assist us with this important work which aims to improve the quality of the water flowing from this source into the river, thus helping to reduce both salinity and sedimentation? August will hopefully be a bit warmer than July and on the third Sunday of the month our regular working bee will continue work along the John Pyle Track. Please meet at Duidgee Park at 9am on Sunday August 21. The AGM will follow at 11am at a venue guaranteed to be warm, welcoming and mud free. Enquiries about activities or membership,

please contact Greg 9574 5445, Robyn 9574 2578 or Sarah 9574 2118.

OUR PRESIDENT Mary recently welcomed garden club members and visitors to Graeme and Liz’s garden. We sheltered from the wind under the verandah and after sharing morning tea and discovering many interesting plants and trees, we didn’t really notice the cold. Liz explained how the land was purchased about nine years ago, being part of Parkland Ridge Estate. The house was built and the garden slowly established. There were few trees, so olives, nuts and natives were planted and an orchard was begun, together with a vegetable garden and succulents including enormous prickly pears and a pair of stately cypresses. The property relies solely on rainwater which is gravity-fed to the house and the gardens. Graeme recently learned how to create Bonsai and a few of these miniature ornamental trees were displayed for us to admire. Liz and Graeme have an amazing variety of birds housed in large cages including parrots, finches, budgies, weiros and pigeons. One exotic friendly parrot called JJ was an Alexandrine, a breed that originated in India

AT THIS time of year geckos are hiding in dry undisturbed areas and it is common to find them in various spaces. A tiny dead gecko was found, there didn’t appear to be any injury so it was taken to the WA Museum where it was identified as a female Clawless Gecko (containing two tiny eggs). This is Australia’s smallest gecko with a Snout Vent Length (SVL) of 3cm for the male and 3.5cms for the female; the tail is approximately 85 per cent of the SVL. It is found around rocky outcrops, in grass tussocks, beneath rocks, logs and debris and Wandoo woodlands. The ground colour of this tiny creature is grey to light brown with a flecking of black. A line of brownish-red runs from the ear to the hind limb; the belly is light grey in colour and may, have the black flecking. Two soft-shelled eggs are laid and hatch after approximately 30 days in relatively warm weather. The Naturalists’ Club members are grateful to receive reports of animal sightings and, if possible a photograph. which assists correct identification. Contact the Naturalists’ Club on [email protected] or by ringing 6364 3609.

and feeds mainly on chillies – maybe that’s why it had a red beak. We also found a couple of pet rabbits. Mary presented Graeme and Liz with a gift of garden items to thank them for opening their garden to the club. Afterwards we celebrated Christmas in July in the beautifully decorated dining room of the Freemason’s Hotel. After lunch, Bruce and Jan oiled the bench seat (which was donated by the club) installed outside Connor’s Mill and attached the plaque. For further information about the next garden club visit, please contact Leonie on 9622 1001.

The seeds are about the same size as canola seed, it is an annual plant which germinates in late autumn to early spring and the seed is spread by wind, water, plant parts, people and animals. Of great concern in WA is the ease by which it can be spread by grain movement and agricultural machinery. Seed of three horned bedstraw can survive for three to five years and even longer in non-wetting soils. Control methods can be found at agric.wa.gov.au/herbicides/ three-horned-bedstraw-control, but it is very important to report its presence before controlling it.

Toodyay Tidy TownsTidy Towns Committee

CAMEL trekking and following the paths of explorers is a pastime for two of our most active committee members, Greg and Vicki Warburton. They have spent July trekking with their trusty camel Warri, tracing the path of explorer David Carnegie who in 1896 travelled with his camels from Coolgardie to Halls Creek. We know they will also have managed to clean up any litter on their journey. Anecdotal evidence indicates there is a certain pride in our town due to Tidy Towns’ activities. Grants enable us to continue the flow of initiatives and possible grant-use ideas are: a school initiative; Adopt a Verge; Adopt a Bus Stop; and signage to commend maintaining a clean verge – ‘Toodyay Tidy Towns Verge Hero’ or similar. The committee appreciates the discussions with the shire to consider murals around town. Our ideas include murals that provide a photo opportunity, where the mural depicts a scene that a person or persons can stand in front of and appear to be part of, and possibilities include an Avon Descent-style kayak, a fire brigade truck and Moondyne Joe on a horse. Experience from other towns in Australia and overseas suggests that these can be a major tourist attraction. For Toodyay Tidy Towns enquiries contact Greg Warburton 0429 009 425, secretary Kaye Rewell 9574 2056 or Shire of Toodyay 9574 2258.

Bird of the MonthDesraé Clarke

DELIGHTFUL piping calls of the Pied Butcherbird are currently heard on cold frosty mornings. The fluting notes are often in unison with another bird, either sitting together or calling across a valley and its musical repertoire is said to be the most pure call of any Australian bird. Medium-sized, the bird about 32 to 36cms is of a relatively stout build. The male and female are similar in size and colouring with a black head, neck, upper back, throat, breast, wings and tail; they have a white collar, lower breast, belly and rump. Its eye is brown, the stocky, hooked bill is blue-grey and black tipped. The immature bird is a dull brown and the adult is black. Breeding takes place from August to December with the building of a cup-shaped nest of sticks, lined with fine roots and grass, in the fork of a tree up to 15 metres above ground. Three to five dull green coloured eggs

The purest call of any Aussie songbirdare laid and incubated by the female for 21 days with the young fledging at 30-32 days. The Pied Butcherbird, which has a strong undulating flight, is an aggressive hunter using the ‘perch and pounce’ tactic on large insects, mice, small birds, nestlings and reptiles with a pair often hunting together and backing each other up. Open woodland areas are favoured by this species of butcherbird and it is found around the continent except for sandy desert areas, coastal areas of Victoria and NSW and mainland Tasmania. Toodyay Shotokan Karate ClubHelen Bainbridge

MORE THAN 60 karate students from country clubs all over the state gathered in Toodyay recently for a friendly interclub tournament. Contestants came from Margaret River, Spearwood, Waroona and Clackline to compete for more than 80 trophies and medals. The tournament was held in the historic Toodyay Memorial Hall and was sponsored by Healthway, Shire of Toodyay, Toodyay and Districts Bendigo Community Bank and the Water Corporation. Clackline/Toodyay Karate Club Inc. is also indebted to the local businesses who supported this milestone event – Toodyay Op Shop, IGA Toodyay, Wheatbelt GP Network, Toodyay RSL, Invision Signs and Toodyay Bakery. Our local karate students competed with much spirit and most prizes were retained by the home club. The tournament, the first of what the group hopes will be an annual event between regional karate clubs, was praised by visitors as an outstanding event. From Margaret River Club: A huge thank you to Helen, Ken and all the Toodyay crew. The organisation, location and competition were fantastic and fought with great spirit and rivalry.South Australia tripA TEAM of six students, two instructors and one parent will be heading to Adelaide on August 24 to represent Australia in an International Tournament. least three events. The whole club wishes our team the best of luck. The Avon Valley Shotokan always welcomes new members into this friendly community club. Students can be aged
