The Readings and their Message

Nehemiah 8:2–4A, 5–6, 8–10 This is the first time that the Law of God is read in public and it marks a very important moment in history. Up to this time, people lived their faith simply by praying and worshipping in the temple. Decisions came to them through the priests; therefore, direct proclamation of the Word of God is a moment of enormous emotion for the people; and, as the prophet reminds them, it is a time of great joy and celebration. 1 Corinthians 12:12–30 Paul elaborates the comparison of the church with the human body, to address the serious problem of divisions and envy in the community. Just as the body has many members, but all belong to the same body, so is Christ. The emphasis is on unity. Each member needs from the others. Luke 1:1–4; 4:14–21 Luke says that Jesus preached in the synagogues when returning from the desert where he was tempted. The synagogue was a community and meeting center. The passage from Isaiah reflects the joy of the Israelites over their liberation from Babylon; but the prophesies of national renewal have yet to be fulfilled. In that context, Jesus communicates the Good News of God’s liberation.

With mass shootings, natural disasters, and the social climate today, our children are living in a world that can be very scary at times. Children who have suffered from trauma, through abuse, loss, or another tragedy, may have different ways of viewing the world through the distorted lens of their fears and worries, and often need the help of trusted adults to guide them through their emotions. Many children use denial as their first coping method, so getting them to talk about what’s happened and explore how they’re feeling and what scares them now is important. Consider consulting someone with expertise in child development – a psychologist, counselor or experienced teacher might have suggestions as to how best to support a child in the aftermath of a frightening experience. The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel, it will be “a year acceptable to the Lord.” And Jesus surely didn’t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time.

When Jesus announced the “arrival” of God’s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God’s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, “Today is holy . . . do not be sad, and do not weep.”

The “year acceptable to the Lord” is this year. The day that is “holy” is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God’s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God’s word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Please come and spend some time in prayer during these hours.

Tomorrow, Monday, January 28th, at 7:00pm a bilingual Mass for families and

friends of the incarcerated will be celebrated here at St. Anthony. It will be followed by a small gathering in the St. Anthony’s Café.

Through prayer and sharing, we open ourselves to God’s healing for ourselves and our loved ones in prison. All are welcome to join us for this special time.

Las lecturas y su mensaje

Nehemías 8:2–4A, 5–6, 8–10 Esta es la primera vez que la Ley de Dios se lee en público y marca un momento muy importante en la historia. Hasta este tiempo, la gente vivía su fe solo orando y participando en el culto del templo. Las decisiones llegaban por medio de los sacerdotes; por lo tanto, la proclamación directa de la Palabra de Dios es un momento de gran emoción, alegría y celebración, como les recuerda el profeta.

1 Corintios 12:12–30 Pablo compara a la iglesia con el cuerpo humano, para tratar el problema de las divisiones y las envidias en la comunidad. Así como el cuerpo tiene muchos miembros, pero todos pertenecen al mismo cuerpo, así es Cristo. Se hace énfasis en la unidad. Cada miembro necesita de los demás.

Lucas 1:1–4; 4:14–21 Lucas señala que Jesús predicaba en sinagogas de regreso del desierto donde fue tentado. La sinagoga era un lugar comunitario y un centro de reunión. El pasaje de Isaías refleja la alegría de los israelitas por su liberación de Babilonia; pero las profecías de renovación nacional todavía no se habían cumplido. En ese contexto, Jesús comunica a la comunidad la Buena Nueva de la liberación de Dios.

Con los tiroteos en masa, los desastres naturales y el clima social de hoy, nuestros niños viven en un mundo que a veces puede ser muy aterrador. Los niños que han sufrido trauma, abuso, pérdida u otra tragedia

pueden tener diferentes formas de ver el mundo a través de la distorsionada realidad de sus temores y preocupaciones. Por esta razón, estos niños con frecuencia necesitan la ayuda de adultos de confianza que los guíen a través de sus emociones. Muchos niños usan la negación como su primer método de afrontamiento, por lo que es importante que hablen sobre lo que sucedió y exploren cómo se sienten y qué los asusta ahora. Considere la posibilidad de consultar a alguien con experiencia en desarrollo infantil.
