Okay so it's just a gucss, bui the Haire indicators say that thc annual tourist bonanza on Mcmorial Day mined a little less gold for northern Michigan than i n niany of the previ- ous holidays that mark the bcginning o f the lucrative sum- mer season.

My first indicator is the traffic and the second is thc cus- tomers in popular restaurants. Friday afternoon and Mon- day afternoon trallic on 1-75 from Bay City to Gaylord was less than o n a normal weekend during thc summer.

One of my favoritc watering holes in Wcst Branch, the Willow Trcc, was about half filled with what I judgcd to he mostly locals.

Pippcn's in Boync City whcrc waiting lines o n holidays arc the rule not the exception was offering immcdiatc scat- ing all weekcnd. The crowds werc probably diniinished by thc wcathcr and

gas at slightly Icss than $2.00 a gallon.

We should explore alternative fuel Gas prices aren’t at record highs, but one Cass City resi-

dent wants more drilling, or alternative sources used in or- der to lower prices.

According to the chart of the day.com website, Ameri- cans want federal officials to tap into the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gas prices. Record highs in gas prices mean $2.74 per gallon for unleaded gasoline, according to the website. De- 1 spite the leap from 99 cents a gallon in 1999, gas prices are within a nornial price range that has existed since the mid 1980s.

“Dip, Dip, Dip. What are you saving for? To use it right,” said Nancy Spencer, a freelance jour- nalist. “We’re in economic tyr- anny,” she added. “It used to be the government was held ac- countable by the people arid now big businesses surpass the gov- ernmen t . ”

Spencer said she’d like to sec big oil companies loosen their patent holds on alternative sources like solar energy. Ethanol is another source she would like to see utilized.

“Ethanol comes from corn and it’s a wonderful product that can save the day if we use it,” she said. And using Ethanol means factories where farmers can take their corn, as well as lower gas prices and less dependence on foreign oil sources.

I t liad to happen sooncr or lutcr. Givcn the struggle that the Cass City Red Hawk soft- ball tcam has endured this se;ison i t appeared that break- ing thc Bay City All Saint win streak against the Hawks would not occur this year.

Rut i t did. For the first time since they entered thc Grcater Thurnb West league the Hawks defeated the Cou- gars, 5-4, Wednesday. There was never more than

one run scparating the teams. Cass City broke a 4-4 tie in the last inning to win. Elise Pasant opened thc inning with the second of her 2 hits. Deidre Deering sacrificed and Pasant rode home on a h i t by Manisha Raythatha.

Dcering, who relieved Lindsey Hendrick in the sixth with one out and shut out All Saints the rest of the way, got credit for the win. Verellen, who relieved Clowiak in the fourth, was charged with the loss.

Each team rapped 10 hits. For the Hawks, Raythatha was 3 for 4 and Deering rapped a circui t clout. Pausglio led the Cougars with a double and 2 singles in 3 trips.

Dccring, 4-3. 'Thc Hawks opened thc ganic with ;I ?-run rally on 4 straight hits with singles by Dccring, Kayla Wentworth and Katie Hacker and a double by Raythatha.

Brown City matchcd that with 3 runs in the second with a single and 2 walks.

That ended the scoring un- t i l the last inning when Dccring opcncd with a triple and scored the winning run a tnomcnt later.

Deering pitched a 2-hitter for the win. Parr took the loss. Deering led the 9-hit Cass City attack with 3 hits in 3 attempts.

Brown City made the most of its 4 hits and some sloppy C a s City fielding to gain thc split, winning the nightcap 4- 2. Thc Green Devils scored 3 times in the first inning with- out benefit of a hit or a walk. Cass City made 4 errors in the inning.

After that i t was a tight game, but McGowan kept the Hawks' 8 hits well scattered to rack up the win. Lindsey Hendrick took the loss al- though she allowed just 4 hits. Deering capped a big day at

the plate with 3 hits in 3 at- bats, giving her 6 for 6 in the double headcr. Hacker and Danielle Guilds each had 2 hits.

For the season, Cass City's overall record is 10-2 I and in the GTW 4-8.

Scott Parr led the Devils with ii pair o f hits including a .?-run homer in the second. Designated hitter Rill 'Thanc with 2 hits in 3 tries was the only Hawk with more than one hit.

Nick 'I'urncr pitched ;I neat 4-hitter ;is thc Hawks took the nightcap. The sophomore southpaw had a shutout un- t i l the sevcnth when Brown City hunched 2 ot'thcir 4 hits to score twice.

The Hawks scorcd 3 titlies i n thc second. Chris M a h q wiilkcd, 'Iylcr Hiidcr was salk on an error and Ziich Gliispic lashed double 10 score the pair and lutcr scorcd hirnsclf. 'I'hat was all I'urncr nccdcd
