ENTERTAINMENTNEWSWell folks there you have it, you heard there, well the

prohibition last? Send prohibition last? Send us your thoughts and opinions and they may be presented in our next article. Till next

time!

A SAVIOR TO A GENERATION The date is October 12, 1928. The setting is the Children’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. The victim is a young girl, only eight years old. The mon-ster is polio. The savior is the iron lung. The machine is put into place, covering most of the girl’s petite body, excluding her head. Recovery from her respira-tory failure is nearly immediate.

Artificial respiration had been attempted before, but success was hard to come by. Enter the genius that is Philip Drinker. Using his vast knowledge from his studies at the Harvard School of Public Health, the man had got it right. The young girl’s dramatic recov-ery gave “Drinker’s Respirator” credibility, and soon Warren E. Collins began production of the iron lung commercially.commercially.

No one is sure what this means for the medical community. Certainly this sort of breakthrough is ex-citing for everybody involved, but change could be around the corner. There are rumors circulating the dance halls and bars that competition for Drinker may be right over the horizon. But that is the future. Right now, today, the present is what is important, and let’s live it up.live it up.
