Below: Sarfan Center Pre-K class and Grand Club members eating together in the UJC Foyer

As anyone who has ever done a home renovation will tell you, it’s a mess. Your entire routine is upset. Your organizational skills are tested. You are forced to accept that chaos reigns until the job is completed-naturally, several weeks or months past the agreed upon completion date. Of course, once the trans-formed new space is revealed, the inconvenience is quickly forgotten.

There is no mystery about where I’m going with this. The UJCVP Campus construction has begun and space is at a premium as 3 synagogues, a thriving Preschool, facility rentals, and a plethora of UJC pro-grams attempt to share a shrinking space. I am still amazed at the flexibility that all parties have shown, both community members and staff, as we navigate our way through the construction.

I do, however, see a glimpse of our future already. Come to the “J” on a Wednesday. The two Pre-K Sar-fan Center classes are currently using the back meet-ing rooms (behind the glass partition in the foyer) as they await completion of their renovated classrooms in the old entrance to the gym. At about 10:00, 13 or so Grand Club members arrive to play bingo, social-ize, and share a delicious lunch in the foyer. A bit later, the Mah Jong group strolls in to begin their afternoon games in the foyer. So under one roof, the full spectrum of our Jewish generations are present. And just as our multi-generational Passover seders we just enjoyed with family and friends, it can get a bit loud in that space. But it’s not just noise. It’s the sound of the past, present and future of our Jewish heritage.

“The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been.” Henry A. Kissinger

Greg and Sabrina are the newest members of our Lead Jew Leadership Development group, which has run continuously since 2012. They joined us for our latest Havdalah event, during which we viewed the Nancy Spielberg documentary Above and Beyond, the story of the birth of the Israeli Air Force. Since its beginning Lead Jew has touched the lives of over 40 young adults in a format that fosters and encourages leadership, education and communal par-ticipation. As members move on or age out, we invite new members to join us. Lead Jew members participate in a myriad of ways at our UJCVP and synagogues. They sit on and chair committees and boards, plan events, brainstorm new programming and fundraising ideas, teach children, give back financially and generally show up! Our commu-nity would not be moving forward without them.

Your generous support means we can continue this program; thank you!

The following is an exerpt from the April 6th message from Jeremy Silverman sent out to North American Jewish Federations. Jerry is the CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America, our national umbrella organization.

There is a lot going on behind the scenes in today’s global Jewish community to bring light into the lives of people in need. Each challenge is a sacred opportunity for us to repair the shattered fragments of our world, to fulfill our mission of caring for one another. As the late Leonard Cohen wrote, “There is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in.”

Nothing epitomizes this more than the situation today in Ukraine. What started as a political crisis in November 2013 has evolved into armed conflict and near-humanitarian catastrophe in eastern Ukraine. As social and economic conditions in the country continue to deteriorate, every aspect of daily life is affected.

The estimated 200,000 Jews of Ukraine — the world’s fifth largest Jewish population — are not immune. They face a crumbling economy, terrifying realities of ongoing conflict, political instability, ethnic tensions, and anti-Semitism.

And so, as is our mission, we are working together with our partners — the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), The Jewish Agency for Israel, and others — to care for our family in Ukraine. Much of this work takes place behind the scenes, where we can be more effective on a personal, human level. It is critical, nonetheless, that we understand what is taking place to help the “light get in.”

Our system’s work in Ukraine addresses real and immediate human needs, from assistance for internally displaced people to Jewish continuity and communal programming to ongoing homecare and Hesed services.

◊ The Jewish Agency’s Mayak Center for Displaced Persons has served close to 2,000 people since it opened its doors in the summer of 2014. The Center helped 40 displaced people a day in 2016 and continues to serve large groups in 2017.

◊ 5,851 new olim from Ukraine have received assistance from The Jewish Agency’s aliyah and absorption services.

◊ Local populations have received assistance with security needs, Jewish continuity and communal programs, and meaningful connections to Israel.

◊ Over 6,500 people have been directly helped through JDC’s Hesed and many other assistance programs in Ukraine. All the while, our agencies provide food, medication, and homecare services to 4,500 people in the conflict zone on a monthly basis.

◊ Our agencies are also there to help formerly displaced people return to their homes or resettle in new locations, and find a sense of security and normalcy.

Much of our work to repair the world necessarily takes place out of public view. This is the unique power of community in a vast network that touches more Jewish lives than any other entity on the planet. That’s why, when we peer into the darkness, we only see the cracks of light shining through; it’s there in every random act of kindness, every family rescued, every spiritual awakening. Every time a Hesed worker is out there on the job, risking danger to help bring dignity and security to another human being. Every time we see our fellow Jews’ plight as that of our own, and strive to repair a broken world.

Israel in Our Community: Host an Israeli Counselor in Your Home this Summer!

Every summer our JCC welcomes Israeli counselors (Shlichim) to join our sum-mer camp staff. The goal of this program is to give campers an experience meet-ing an Israeli and learning about life and culture in Israel. Our two Israeli counselors make wonderful home guests who are excited to ex-

perience local American culture as they are to share stories of their life in Israel with your family. Won’t you be a host family? We are looking for families to host:

You do not need to have children in summer camp to become a host. If you are interested in hosting, or if you know of another family that may be interested in this unique opportunity, please contact Jennifer Meyers 757-930-1422 [email protected].

Correction:

In the April UJC Newsletter the wrong address was listed for the Wendwood Pool. The correct address is: 320 Dominion Dr. Newport News, VA 23602.

The UJC has contracted with the Wendwood Pool Association for full use of their swimming pool for our day camp and UJC members this summer. Please watch your email for more information.

When you give to our Annual Campaign you are ensuring that our day-to-day operations are secure. But what about when you’re no

longer here? Will others replace what you’ve been doing? Consider a legacy gift to the UJCVP Endowment and secure your

desire to support our community forever.

I’m Not Wealthy, Are Legacy Gifts Right for Me?

You do not have to be wealthy to have an estate or to leave a legacy. No matter what your income or estate value, your gift is important.

Ask yourself: Will your beneficiaries miss a small percentage of your estate? For instance, could you leave 5% of your estate to the Jewish community? Those funds may be essential in keeping vital programs alive to benefit future generations. In addition to discussing this with your personal estate planner or attorney, our staff can help you determine what funding vehicle might be right for you.
