The six-day competition for under-15s is set to take place at George Campbell Tech- nical School, with more than 12 teams competing, in- cluding Germany, Turkey, Japan, China, Reunion, Mali and Zimbabwe. The tournament is seen by some as a useful measure of the city’s readiness for the 2010 World Cup. Project Manager Teddi Adams said the Cup, which was initiated in 2006 by the city of Bremen, Germany, promotes the ‘One World’ concept, of a game that transcends boundaries of language, gender, religions and culture. South Africa won the inau- gural event. Adams said: “The Cup pro- vides an opportunity for people from around the world to experience South African culture. It allows for international and local schools to link up, it builds friendship, it will pave the way for 2010, and gives Durban a chance to show off the new Moses Mabhida stadium.” For details, e-mail [email protected] or [email protected] or visit www.durban.gov.za . JOE MAJOLA TWENTY-FOUR musicians and singers have been selected from hundreds who attended a recent talent search at Cato Manor’s Um- khumbane community hall. They will receive training in music theory and practice, under the guidance of George and Debbie Mari of the Stem Project. The one-year training programme starts on 13 March. It is part of the City’s Cato Manor Area Based Manage- ment project to help mus- icians earn a living. Gospel singer Ruth Thipe, 36, was delighted with the auditions. “People should use their talent and the project will take kids off the streets and fight crime,” she said. The project is still looking to recruit 11 more instru- mentalists, and interested musicians from Cato Manor should call Nathi Zondi on 031 261 6640 or 082 930 4811. The IDP is the muni- cipality’s five-year plan, which drives strategies for the City’s budgets and perfor- mance management systems to realise its 2020 vision. It contains eight plans, which prioritise development issues, including responding to important challenges such as poverty, economic growth, access to services and skills development. The document is reviewed every year to ensure its core values are relevant and response is given to identified development priorities. This process began in November 2007 with work- shops to determine what areas to change in the revised version. Update In February this year, councillors met to consider the document and look at ways to improve its content and update plans before taking it to ward committees and other key stakeholders. The ward committee review process is now complete and stakeholders will be meeting next week to look at what should be done before the IDP for 2008/2009 is revised and adopted in June. Sharm Maharaj, co-ordi- nator of the event in Whet- stone, Phoenix, said: “The IDP needs to determine what the community needs, not only what officials think. They should all work together in this regard. People were positive and it is good to see they were enthusiastic that improved community involvement in planning is going to take place. “Many priorities were high- lighted from the workshop. Among these were basic services, electricity and housing. “People are looking forward to sessions where feedback would be given. It is the start of a good process,” said Maharaj.
