Refinery Slop Committee Celebrates Good Performance

Customer Care Programme for Security Completed

A luncheon was hosted by the General Manager Refining Hafedh Al Qassab to celebrate the performance of the Slop Committee and their successes in identifying various slop sources and reducing the unidentified slops in both separator and process units to the lowest recorded levels. The multi-disciplined team is represented by OPD North, OPD South, OS&E Refinery Tanks, P&U Utilities, P&U Energy, PED System Support and TSD Utilities. GM Refining highlighted the successes the team has achieved over the last two years. It started with review of process slop by establishing a system that accounts for all the slop generated from known sources in the process units. In the absence of flow meters, correlation was developed between the pump cut-in and out frequency, and pump capacity, to determine an estimated quantity of slop discharged. During unplanned unit shutdowns, unstable unit operation and other aberrations occur and off spec products are diverted to the slop tanks. PED System Support recently developed Totalizer tags with a selector switch, “Slop” and “Storage” to be activated by DCS Control Operator aimed to track the quantity being routed to slop more accurately. This step change has improved the tracking of the slop during such incidents when operators’ attentions are diverted to restoring the unit back to its normal state. A further initiative was

spearheaded by TSD through the development of a Process Flow Diagram for the Refinery Process Slop system to ensure that all parties better understood the system and improved the team’s troubleshooting capabilities. P&U oversees the API Separators and alerts all the concerned units when it reaches the maximum target. Refinery tanks (OS&E) is the storage point of the skimmed oil and provides the official figures of the separator slop generation. Full attention has been highlighted during the tank draining to avoid oil carryover to API separators. The hydrojetting activities have also been identified as one of the sources of the sudden displacement of oil in the system that is routed to separator and ended up with abnormally high

slop figure. All of these aspects of the process slop system have been looked at carefully by the team, and through improved tracking and communicating, improvements in slop management have been obtained.GM Refining stated that the effectiveness of the system depends on the commitment of the concerned parties to do their part in alignment with the team objective. It is during this crucial time when margins are low that every barrel of oil counts. The demonstrated performance of an improved slop management system, achieving lowest recorded slop oil production levels, means that maximum revenue is obtained. He thanked the team and all involved for a job well done.

Market Highlights:1. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) continues to trim its forecasts for U.S. crude oil production, saying low oil prices are making some US production less profitable. In its latest monthly Short Term Energy Outlook (STEO) released last Wednesday, EIA said output has been falling fast, with August volumes estimated to be about 140,000 barrels per day (b/d) lower than July. The agency is now projecting average annual U.S. crude oil production of 9.2 million b/d in 2015 and 8.8 million b/d in 2016, both revised down by 100,000 b/d from last month’s forecasts.

2. EIA expects non-OPEC liquids production to grow by 1.4 million b/d in 2015, but to remain roughly flat in 2016, as declining U.S. production is offset by modest growth in other non-OPEC producers.

3. EIA estimates that OPEC crude oil production averaged 30.1 million b/d in 2014 and to increase by 0.8 million b/d in 2015 and remain relatively flat in 2016.

4. EIA expects global consumption of petroleum and other liquids to grow by 1.2 million b/d in 2015 and by 1.3 million b/d in 2016. Growth in global consumption for 2016 was revised downward by almost 0.2 million b/d, compared with last month’s forecast, as China and other Asian economies continue to show signs of weakness.

5. EIA forecasts Brent crude oil prices will average $54/Bbl in 2015 and $59/Bbl in 2016, unchanged from last month’s STEO. Forecast West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices in 2015 and 2016 average $5/Bbl lower than the Brent price.

6. U.S. investment bank Goldman Sachs (GS) slashed its forecasts for oil prices on Friday, citing global oversupply and worries about top energy consumer China. GS lowered its 2016 forecast for WTI to $45/Bbl from $57/Bbl, and said it saw 2016 Brent prices at $49.5/Bbl, down from its earlier $62/Bbl forecast.

7. Saudi Aramco is talking to a group of local and international banks about raising a $5 billion loan related to the YASREF refinery; which is a JV between Aramco and China’s Sinopec, sources with knowledge of the matter said last Monday. The funds will be used to replace some of the capital Aramco invested to build the 400,000 b/d refinery at Yanbu, which can then be deployed in other projects.

8. Saudi Aramco will open an office in India by the end of this year to help boost its crude sales in the world’s fourth largest oil consuming nation, sources with knowledge of the matter said last week. India will be the fifth country in Asia where Aramco will set up offices after Korea, Japan, China and Singapore. It also has Aramco services company in the United States and Aramco Overseas company in Europe.

9. State-owned Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Co (ORPIC) has contacted 35 banks - both domestic and international - and eight export credit agencies to fund its $5.2 billion plastics production complex will borrow money to finance 70% of its $5.2 billion plastics production complex, the company’s chief financial officer told a news conference last Tuesday. The remaining 30% of the funding will come from equity from the company.

10. The company expects to sign a financing deal with local and international lenders in October.

11. Sta te-contro l led China Aviation Oil (CAO) has temporarily suspended its petrochemical trading activities because of a tough market.

Bapco’s EHSC Meeting No. 81 was held on Tuesday, 8 September 2015, where the following points were discussed:• The meeting was chaired by GM Refining, Hafedh Al-Qassab.• There was no Lost Time Injury (LTI), 1 Non-Lost Time Injury (NLTI) and 4 first aid injuries reported during August 2015.• The EHSC extended its congratulations to all on achieving the significant milestone of 13 million hours without an LTI on 3 September 2015, the highest record ever achieved. • Our next target is to achieve 15 million Bapco and contractor employee-hours without an LTI by mid-November this year. The EHSC stated their confidence that together we can achieve this milestone, however we must continue to apply the basic health and safety tools that we have at our disposal like OSOOL Bapco and 4Keys to Safety, to ensure that we mitigate potential unsafe acts and injuries. It was reiterated that although we have achieved excellence in personal and process safety targets in 2015, we also have had 5 NLTIs which indicate that it would not have taken much to have had a much more serious injury. Even though we achieve milestones, we must continue to feel vulnerable, and must continue to hold each other to maintain our high expectations. We must continue to have safety & health conversations with

the workforce to maintain focus. • The EHSC also extended its congratulations to all on achieving 90 days without a reset on Bapco Refinery Reliability Clock (RRC) on 24 August 2015, which is reflective of good process safety performance. There has only been one reset of the RRC in 2015 which is best recorded performance, and this is a positive indicator as a more reliable facility will be a safer place to work. • 3 Process Safety Incidents were recorded during August 2015, out of which none were Tier 1 or 2, and 2 incidents were classified as Tier 3 as per API RP754 standard. No fire was reported during August 2015.• There were 5 vehicle accidents during August 2015, 3 involving Bapco and 1 contractor drivers. 1 accident was due to Bapco driver fault. YTD there have been 79 vehicle accidents compared to 67 in 2014. The increase in the total number of accidents compared to last year was noted by the EHSC, and concerns were expressed as 2014 was a poor year. The increasing trend needs to be addressed, and a company-wide defensive driving program is currently being planned. At the next EHSC a detailed analysis of underlying causes of the increasing vehicle accidents will also be carried out.• There were 6 unplanned flaring incidents during August 2015. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) currently stands at 5.65 vs a target of 7.0. The main issues affecting the EPI are the number of oil spills we

have had as well as unplanned flaring. It was noted that majority of oil spills were minor in nature, however any loss of containment must be prevented. We must also continue with our efforts to reduce unplanned flaring, loss of containment and also improve the performance of all the measures in the EPI in order to achieve our target.• An update on the activities of the EHS Week Organizing Committee was presented, 2 mail-drops (electronically and hard-copy) containing booklets and quizzes have been issued. More than 1960 persons participated in 18 quizzes aimed at Bapco & contractors employees and their families. EHSC commended the EHS Week team on their efforts and planning, as this year’s events appear to be very interesting, informative and exciting. All are reminded that the EHS week is taking place from 4th – 10th October 2015 with the Family Day to be held on 10th October 2015 at BIC, the Family Walk on 3rd October 2015 at Princess Sabeeka Park in Awali and the City Centre interactive stand on 24th & 25th September 2015 at Bahrain City Centre. All are encouraged to take part in the various quizzes and activities of the EHS Week since a lot of time and effort has gone into organizing these initiatives and the content is informative and should benefit all. • Well Done to the EHS Week Organizing Committee for their continued efforts towards ensuring a successful event.

Jammed? Bone Health Awareness Event Held for EmployeesIs your morning

commute to work raising your blood pressure level? Do you feel your face getting red when the traffic slows down to a halt? We’ve all been there

sometime. Follow these tips to help you stay calm in the face of a traffic jam, especially on your commute to and from work:- Counting is one of the oldest ways that you can help pass your time while waiting for the car before you to move, or for a traffic light to turn green. Just counting the seconds or even imagining a count-down clock next to the traffic light can help you reduce your anxiety levels.- Listen to soothing music or an informative/fun podcast on the radio. When you have an interesting speech, lecture or talk show to listen to on the radio, your mind is momentarily off the vehicular distress that you are being confronted with. Alternatively, you could listen to your favourite tracks on the radio because let’s face it; there isn’t much time to listen to music during the day when you live such a hectic lifestyle.- Meditation – before you think we’re recommending that you close your eyes while on the road, just switching off mentally for a few seconds can help you find some much-needed peace when you’re surrounded by still traffic on all four sides. - Tell yourself that this is indeed temporary. Most of us feel angry and exasperated in traffic because it seems like there is no way out, but the fact remains that you will only be late. There is a way out of this mess, and you’re going to find that way in a few minutes. In the meantime, a little patience and calmness will benefit you greatly, and won’t you want that?

Dr. Raza Graduates with Medical Education Degree

Day-to-day Tyre Safety

Dr. Sayed Shakeel Raza, Consultant Cardiologist at the Awali Hospital has successfully graduated with a Postgraduate Degree in Medical Education from the University of Cardiff, Wales. He was conferred with the degree at the University’s convocation ceremony on 16 July 2015. Dr. Raza used the Distance Education medium to complete his Medical Education studies.

• Tyres are something we often take for granted, but they are actually one of the most important safety features of any vehicle. They impact general handling, the ability to maneuver around corners and provide grip in extreme conditions such as rain, heat and snow.

• Tyres should be considered an investment for your car, as the benefits of regularly replacing and maintaining tyres far outweigh the initial costs involved. For example properly inflated and maintained tyres can improve petrol mileage by up to 3.3 percent. With petrol prices this can mean serious cash saving over the period of a year or more.

• Of course the most important contribution tyres make to a vehicle is with safety, as varying types and conditions of tyres make a big difference in handling ability and braking distance in wet and dry. That sort of difference can save lives.

How regularly you should check your tyres (and how to) When you replace your tyres you should strive to replace all four tyres at once to even out tyre wear and tear. Don’t forget about the spare tyre when replacing your primary tyres! It is not only a legal requirement to have a functional spare tyre it can actually save you in an emergency situation. Often you are able to get discount by purchasing multiple tyres so that is something worth taking advantage of.Tyres have tyre wear indicators moulded into the grooves

of the tyre which allow you to check the tread depth of the tyre easily. When the tyre wear indicators are visibly worn down it is vital to replace your tyres. When you check the tread wear of your tyres it is also a good idea to check the inflation pressure at the same time. Specifies the technical standards your tyres (including the spare) need to meet in order to be considered roadworthy. That requires that your vehicles tyres must be in good condition with a tread of at least 1.5 mm in depth across the tread surface. It is very important to follow these guidelines not only to avoid a major penalty from traffic department but also to ensure the safety of yourself, your passengers and other vehicles and pedestrians on the road. How to look after your tyres Looking after your tyres should be a regular part of your car maintenance routine. It is recommended to keep the tyres inflated to the adequate PSI (as indicated by the manufacturer) in order to prevent overheating. If you find that your tyres wear unevenly or there are cracks and bumps appearing on the sidewalls there may be an issue with the steering or suspension of your vehicle, and you should consult a car mechanic as soon as possible.Summary: Tyre safety is a critical component of any road safety strategy, and can save you money and reduce the prospect of a serious accident if basic guidelines are followed appropriately. Always ensure that you follow

the recommended maintenance schedule provided by your car manufacturer and check the condition of your tyres regularly.

EcoWASTE 2016 to Address Drastic Regional Increase

of Waste Production

Young ADIPEC Calls on Abu Dhabi Schools to Nominate UAE Energy Ambassadors

The third edition of EcoWASTE is set to highlight solutions to sustainably and effectively manage the increasing waste generation in the region, including Tadweer’s recently announced master plan for Abu Dhabi. With figures from the latest World Bank Report; A Global Review of Solid Waste Management, showing urban waste generation from the region now crossing 63 million tons per year, experts are looking at new industry developments that can transform waste into a valuable resource. As part of the annual Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week hosted by Masdar, EcoWASTE, held in strategic partnership with Tadweer, will exchange best-practice case studies, demonstrate new technologies, and share innovative solutions for the waste management sector. The event will also offer a unique platform for investment and partnership opportunities in waste management and recycling. Earlier this year, Tadweer, the center of waste management, Abu Dhabi, announced a 25 year waste management master plan in which the emirate will be divided into zones with specific recycling centers introduced according to the prevalent type of waste generated in the area. The aim is to redirect 75 per cent of waste from landfills by 2021 through various recycling and re-usage strategies.H.E Eisa Saif Al Qubaisi, General Manager of Tadweer, said “EcoWASTE 2015 provided Tadweer with an opportunity to exchange best practices, source the latest technologies, and network with industry leaders and experts. The expected growth of the event this year makes the exhibition an ideal platform to showcase and reveal details of

the master plan for Abu Dhabi seeing as our visions can only be achieved with the full support of the community.”“We are looking forward to disclosing more details of our strategy during EcoWASTE 2016, and we are confident that our practices will be adopted by other emirates in the country, and hopefully followed by neighboring countries across the region.” said Dr. Salem Al Ka’abi, Deputy General Manager of Tadweer, and head of the EcoWaste 2016 Committee. The exhibition will offer insights on new methods of reusing, reducing, and recycling waste while maintaining a sustainable environment in an effort to help strengthen solid waste management efficiency, spread awareness among communities to improve the quality of life enjoyed and expected, and address regulatory mandates. The exhibition will also feature the second Municipalities Roundtable, which will expand to include representatives from countries across the MENA region this year, including Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Kuwait, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The previous Municipalities Roundtable brought together top decision makers from GCC local authorities to address the waste management challenges faced in the region, making a tangible difference to cross-border co-operation. EcoWASTE 2016 will take place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on 18-21 January 2016, and is co-located with WFES and International Water Summit. The event is expected to bring together more than 50 exhibiting companies from 17 countries, and more than 4500 trade visitors from the waste industry.

Held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, Young ADIPEC will offer students from schools across Abu Dhabi an exciting line-up of events designed to encourage youth to choose a career path in the oil and gas industry. The outreach program is part of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC), one of the world’s leading energy events and a global meeting place for oil and gas professionals, business leaders, and decision makers. New for 2015 is a dedicated Young ADIPEC Ambassador’s Programme. Each participating school will nominate a student ambassador who will represent Young ADIPEC among his or her classmates, friends, and family. The aim of this newly developed role is to raise awareness of the programme to fellow students and offer the community insight about the many opportunities in the oil and gas industry. Mr. Ali Khalifa Al Shamsi, Director of Strategy & Coordination at ADNOC and ADIPEC 2015 Chairman, said: “Increasing the uptake of engineering as a career path among Emirati students is still a challenge for the local oil and gas industry, but Young ADIPEC is committed to overcoming this hurdle by working with the industry to inspire young nationals to be at the forefront of future visions for the energy sector that will have an impact worldwide.” According to the 2013/2014 UAE Higher Education Factbook, 17 per cent of Emirati students were enrolled in an engineering programme during that academic year. This figure falls to 13 per cent for female Emirati students, while for male students it stands

at 24 per cent. Aimed at high school students between the ages of 14 and 17, Young ADIPEC is designed to highlight the wealth and diversity of career opportunities in the energy sector. Over 400 students from across the UAE have passed through the programme since its inception in 2013, and the 2015 edition will host approximately 320 students from 16 private and government schools.Students will have an exciting opportunity to get hands-on experience during trips to oil field sites, training centres, innovation centres, as well as workshop and manufacturing facilities belonging to leading oil and gas companies, including the Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations Ltd., (ADCO), Al Mansoori Specialized Engineering, Al Mazroui Engineering, Borouge, the National Drilling Company, The Petroleum Institute, Schlumberger, Total, and Weatherford. “It is crucial for the future development of any country to have its nationals working across all fields and sectors of its economy,” said Mr Wael Agha, Managing Director of Al Mazroui Engineering. “Empowering today’s youth with the required expertise and skillset is the only sure-fire way they will succeed and thrive both personally and professionally in this knowledge-based economy.” Students will also be invited to participate in the Oil & Gas Identity Competition, sponsored by Total. This new competition will offer them an opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals needed for successful entry into the industry. For this competition, students will be asked to select a specialisation within the industry, such as geology or engineering, and then identify an individual who

works within the selected field to understand the job profile. Once completed, students will need to submit an entry including a photo of the profiled professional, and a brief write-up detailing what they have learnt from this experience. The top three submissions will be announced as winners during the show and prizes will be distributed. Following significant success, the Young ADIPEC Photo Competition, sponsored by ARDECO, is back, this time with ‘Innovation and Sustainability’ as the theme. Innovation is the key to the ongoing sustainable development and future success of the industry. Worldwide, innovation drives technology, which drives competitive advantage, which ultimately drives sustainability. To understand what this means to tomorrow’s leaders, students are being invited to capture how they see innovation and sustainability through the lens of their cameras, and to take the time to explore how the two drive the world around them. The competition is open to all students between the ages of 11 to 18 across the UAE, and is split into four categories: boys 11-14 and 15-18, and girls 11-14 and 15-18.A host of other experiential activities taking place at the Young ADIPEC stand during the event will raise the bar for edutainment, with five Experience Zones designed to keep students engaged and informed. The Oil & Gas Theatre Zone, a state-of-the-art 360-degree dome with digital laser projection, will serve as an incredible audio visual guide to the oil and gas industry for young students. The five zones also include The Petroleum Institute Educational Zone, where students will be invited to carry out live experiments, a Video Wall, which will display filmed diaries from the school field trips, as well as dedicated walls showcasing the shortlisted entries for the Photo Competition and the Oil & Gas Identity Competition. The sponsors of Young ADIPEC are ADNOC, Arab Development Company, Al Mazroui Engineering, ExxonMobil, Partex Oil & Gas, Total, and Weatherford. For more information on Young ADIPEC, please visit the ADIPEC website at www.adipec.com.
