With Jefferson County schools closed for the day in the wake of the latest winter snow, the decision was made Friday to move the second-round games of the high school boys’ basketball tournament being played at Valley Falls to Saturday and to move the games originally scheduled for Saturday, the final games, to Wednesday evening of this week. The eight-team tournament got underway the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 21, with the first- round games. They saw the Perry-Lecompton Kaws knock off the Atchison County Tigers, 56-27, and the Pleasant Ridge Rams turn back the Rossville The annual mid-season girls’ basketball tournament hosted by Jefferson County North com- menced Tuesday evening with the first-round games and is scheduled to resume Friday evening. The opening-round pair- ings had the Tigers of Atchi- son County Community facing the Saints of Cornerstone and by Rick Nichols Highlights from the 33rd annual McLouth Invitational Tournament held last week at the school complex included a second-place finish by the Jef- ferson West girls’ basketball team and a third-place showing by the boys’ basketball team at McLouth. The fourth-seeded Tiger girls found themselves fac- ing the third-seeded Eagles of Silver Lake in the champion- ship game Saturday evening, a contest that went to the squad from Shawnee County by a score of 44 to 35. Silver Lake enjoyed a 9-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Jefferson West outscored the Eagles by four points during the second quarter and went into halftime with a one-point edge, the score 21-20. But the Eagles owned the third quarter, outscoring John Malloy’s group by 10 points to go up by nine points entering the fourth quarter, the score 37-28. Kristen Biltoft topped the Jefferson West scoring chart with 16 points, most of which came at the free throw line. Teammate Heather Kahler chipped in with 6 points for the red and black. Facing third-seeded Cair Paravel with the chance to ad- vance to the title contest on the line, McLouth dropped a 40-33 decision to the Lions in one of the late games played Thursday evening. The Bulldogs began tour- nament play by whipping the seventh-seeded Cyclones of Riverside, 48-31, in one of late games played Monday eve- ning. Continuing on the boys’ side, Jefferson West’s Tigers bounced back from a first-round loss to the eventual champions of the tournament by downing the sixth-seeded Eagles of Veritas Christian School, 65-59, Satur- day afternoon to capture fifth place. Veritas was ahead by the slimmest of margins at 14-13 going into the second quar- ter, but Matt Simmons’ squad outperformed the Eagles on the court during the second quarter and went into halftime up by three points, the score 32-29. The fourth-seeded Tigers continued to get it done during the third quarter and carried a 50-39 advantage into the final eight minutes of play. Jefferson West put three players in double figures, Quinn Neuenswander, Garrett Athon and Bryce Clements. Quinn was on target for 19 points to lead the Tigers and was backed up by Garrett’s 13-point effort and the 11 points the team got from Bryce. Jefferson West was out in front of the Eagles 13-7 after one quarter of play and en- joyed a four-point edge midway through the contest, the score 26-22. When the two teams got back onto the court for the beginning of the last stanza, the Tigers led by nine points at 37-28. With 19 points, Quinn Neuen- swander spearheaded the Tiger attack. He was joined in double figures by Bryce Clements, who came through with a dozen points to help the cause. The Tigers enjoyed a two- point advantage after one quar- ter of play, the score 12-10, but the Red Hawks outscored them by 10 points during the second quarter to go up 27-19 midway through the contest. Hiawatha added to its lead during the third quarter and went into the final quarter out in front by 14 points, the score 46-32. With 17 points, Bryce Cle- ments topped the Tigers’ scor- ing chart. There was one other Jefferson West player in double figures, Brayden Gleason-Cruz, who found the range for 13 points. Boys’ tourney delayed by the weather Bulldogs, 45-36, in the early games, and the Valley Falls Dragons top the Oskaloosa Bears, 62-33, and the Jefferson County North Chargers best the Cornerstone Saints, 55-42, in the late games. On Saturday, Perry-Lecomp- ton faced Pleasant Ridge and Valley Falls opposed Jefferson County North in the winners’ bracket contests, and Rossville met Atchison County and Os- kaloosa squared off against Cornerstone in the consolation contests. Here are the results from the action on the hard- woods: Perry-Lecompton over Pleas- ant Ridge, 55-45; Jefferson County North over Valley Falls 58-52; Rossville over Atchison County 42-27; Cornerstone over Oskaloosa, 57-49. Based on the results of Sat- urday’s contests, the games that were to have been played Wednesday evening pitted Os- kaloosa against Atchison Coun- ty at 6 in the East Gym for sev- enth place, Valley Falls against Pleasant Ridge at 6 in the West Gym for third place, Rossville against Cornerstone at 7:30 in the East Gym for fifth place, and Jefferson County North against Perry-Lecompton at 7:30 in the West Gym for first place. Girls playing roundball in Winchester, Nortonville the Chargers of JCN opposing the Bulldogs of Rossville in Winchester, and the Bears of Oskaloosa battling the Rams of Pleasant Ridge and the Kaws of Perry-Lecompton testing the Dragons of Valley Falls in Nor- tonville. The losing teams from these matches will play at 6 and 7:30 in Nortonville and the winners will play at 6 and 7:30 in Win- chester. The tournament is slated to conclude Saturday with the seventh place game at noon in Winchester, the fifth place game at 1:30 p.m., the third place game at 3 and the championship game at 4:30.

The Tigers advanced to the consolation contest by getting by eighth-seeded Silver Lake 50-44 in one of the late games Friday evening. Jefferson West was out in front of the Eagles 13-7 after one quarter of play and en-joyed a four-point edge midway through the contest, the score 26-22. When the two teams got back onto the court for the beginning of the last stanza, the Tigers led by nine points at 37-28. With 19 points, Quinn Neuen-swander spearheaded the Tiger attack. He was joined in double figures by Bryce Clements, who came through with a dozen points to help the cause.

It was the fifth-seeded Red Hawks of Hiawatha that Jef-ferson West faced in the first round, and the Tuesday evening

contest, one of the late contests, ultimately went to the squad from Brown County by a score of 64 to 51. The Tigers enjoyed a two-point advantage after one quar-ter of play, the score 12-10, but the Red Hawks outscored them by 10 points during the second quarter to go up 27-19 midway through the contest. Hiawatha added to its lead during the third quarter and went into the final quarter out in front by 14 points, the score 46-32. With 17 points, Bryce Cle-ments topped the Tigers’ scor-ing chart. There was one other Jefferson West player in double figures, Brayden Gleason-Cruz, who found the range for 13 points.

Silver Lake’s journey to the championship of the began when the Eagles prevailed over McLouth, 53-23, in one of the early games Tuesday evening. After bowing to Silver Lake, McLouth next faced seventh-seeded Riverside in one of the early games Friday evening and fell to the Cyclones by five points, 55-50.

On Saturday, Perry-Lecomp-ton faced Pleasant Ridge and Valley Falls opposed Jefferson County North in the winners’ bracket contests, and Rossville met Atchison County and Os-kaloosa squared off against Cornerstone in the consolation contests.
