TIPS

Road safetyFamiliarise yourself with the various car ra-dio fuctions (for example, memorize the sta-tions) before starting to drive.

The car radio has been designed in accor-dance with the passenger compartmentspecifications and has been personalized sothat it is integrated with the style of thedashboard.The instructions for usage are given belowand we recommend that they are closely fol-lowed.

Reception conditionsReception conditions change constantlywhile driving. Reception may be interferedwith by the presence of mountains, build-ings or bridges when you are far from thebroadcaster.IMPORTANT The volume may be increasedwhen receiving traffic bulletins.

Care and maintenanceOnly clean with a soft, anti-static cloth.Cleaning and polishing products could dam-age the surface.

If the volume is too loud thiscould be dangerous for the

driver and for passengers when dri-ving in traffic. Always adjust the vol-ume so that you can still hear back-ground noises.

❍ never use chemical cleaning products(e.g. spray cans or anti-static productsor thinners) because they could damagethe surface of the CDs;

❍ after listening to them place CDs backin their casings to avoid damage tothem;

❍ do not expose CDs to direct sunlight,high temperatures or dampness for longperiods;

❍ do not stick labels on the surface of theCD and do not write on the recorded sur-face using pens or pencils;

❍ do not use CDs that are very scratched,flawed, distorted, etc. Using discs likethis will result in malfunctions or dam-age to the player;

❍ the use of original CD supports is re-quired for the best quality audio produc-tion . If CD-R/RW supports that have notbeen correctly mastered and/or with amaximum capacity above 650 MB areused, correct operation is not guaran-teed.

❍ do not use the protective sleeves soldfor CDs or discs with stabilizers, etc. be-cause they could get stuck in the inter-nal mechanism and damage the disc;

CDDirt, scratches or any distortions on CDscould cause problems when playing andpoor sound quality. Follow this advice for op-timum conditions:❍ only use branded CDs:

❍ clean every CD to remove any finger-marks or dust using a soft cloth. HoldCDs around the outside circumferenceand clean them from the middle out-wards;

❍ if copy protected CDs are used, it maytake a few seconds beore the systemstarts playing them. The CD player can-not be guaranteed to play all protecteddiscs. The fact that the CD is protectedfrom being copied is often shown in verysmall letters or is difficult to read on theactual CD cover where it may way, forexample, “COPY CONTROL”, “COPYPROTECTED”, “THIS CD CANNOT BEPLAYED ON A PC/MAC”, or it may beidentified through the use of symbols,such as, for example:

❍ The CD player is capable of reading mostcompression systems currently in use(e.g.: LAME, BLADE, XING, FRAUN-HOFER) but, following the developmentof those systems, the playback of allcompression formats is not guaranteed.

20 FUNCTIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS

With the function activated, the radio auto-matically tunes into the station with thestrongest signal broadcasting the same pro-gramme. While driving, you can continue tolisten to the same station without having tochange the frequency when you changezones. Obviously, it must be possible to receive thestation that you are listening to in the areayou are driving through.If the AF function is activated, “AF” will lightup in the display.If the AF function has been activated andthe radio is no longer capable of receivingthe station tuned into, the radio will activatethe automatic search during which the dis-play will show “FM Search” (only for thetop of the range radio).

With the AF function deactivated, the re-maining RDS functions such as the displayof the name of the radio station continue toremain activated. The AF function can only be activated on FMbands.

AF SWITCHING function(alternative frequencysearch)The radio can operate in two different modesin the RDS system:❍ “AF Switching On”: search for alterna-

tive frequencies activated (display shows“AF”);

❍ “AF Switching Off”: alternative frequen-cy search not activated.

Proceed as follows to switch the functionon/off:❍ press the MENU button and select “AF

TRAFFIC INFORMATIONfunctionSome stations on the FM band (FM1, FM2and FMA) can transmit information abouttraffic conditions. In this case the letters “TA”will appear in the display.Proceed as follows to switch the TA functionon/off:❍ press the MENU button and select “Traf-

fic Info”;❍ press the ¯ / ˙ buttons to turn the

function on/off.If the TA function is activated, “TA” will lightup in the display.IMPORTANT if the TA function is activatedwith an audio source other than Tuner (Ra-dio) (CD, MP3, Telephone or Mute/Pause),the radio can carry out an automatic searchand therefore it is possible, when reactivat-ing the Tuner (Radio) source, that the fre-quency tuned into will be different from theone set previously.

It is possible, with the TA function, to:❍ search for RDS stations only that broad-

cast on the FM band enabled to trans-mit traffic information;

❍ riceive traffic information even if the CDplayer is working;

❍ riceive traffic information at a minimumpreset volume even with the radio vol-ume zeroed.

IMPORTANT In some countries there are ra-dio stations that do not broadcast traffic in-formation even with the TP function acti-vated (“TP” on the display).If the radio is working on the AM band,when the TA function is activated it willswitch to the last station tuned into onto theFM1 band.

The volume at which the traffic update istransmitted depends on the reception vol-ume:❍ listening volume less than 5: traffic up-

date volume equal to 5 (fixed value);❍ listening volume more than 5: traffic up-

date volume +1 compared with listen-ing volume.

CD MP3 35

7

INTRODUCTIONThis chapter only contains descriptions of thevariants to the operation of the CD MP3 play-er: as far as the operation of the radio is con-cerned, refer to the description in chapter“4” and “6”.NOTE MPEG Layer-3 audio decoding technol-ogy licensed from Fraunhofer IIS and Thom-son multimedia.

MP3 MODEIn addition to playing normal audio CDs, theradio is also capable of playing CD-ROMs onwhich MP3 format compressed audio filesare recorded. The radio works according tothe methods described in chapter “5” whenan ordinary audio CD is inserted.The use of good quality supports burnt at theslowest possible speeds is recommended foroptimum quality.The files on the CD MP3 are in folders, withsequential lists of all the folders containingMP3 trackts (folders and sub-folders are allon the same level) and folders that do notcontain MP3 tracks cannot be selected.

The operating conditions and specificationsfor playing MP3 files are as follows:❍ the CD-ROMs used should be burnt in ac-

cordance with ISO9660 Specification;❍ the music files should have extension

“.mp3”: files with other extensions can-not be played;

❍ the sampling frequency range that canbe reproduced is: 44.1 kHz, stereo (96to 320 kbit/s) - 22.05 kHz, mono orstereo (32 to 80 kbit/s);

❍ tracks with variable bit-rates can be re-produced.

IMPORTANT Track names must not containthe following characters: spaces, ‘(apostophes), (e) (open and close brack-ets). When a CD MP3 is being burned,make sure that the file names do not con-tain these characters; otherwise, the car ra-dio will not be able to play those tracks.

DISPLAY INFORMATION

ID3-tag information displayIn addition to the information relating to thetime elapsed, the name of the folder andthe name of the file, the radio is also capa-ble of display ID3-TAG information relatingto the Title track, Artist and Author.The name of the MP3 folder shown on thedisplay corresponds to the name with whichthe folder was stored on the CD, followedby an asterisk.Example of a complete MP3 folder name:BEST OF *.If you wishh to display one of the ID3-TAGpieces of information (Title, Artist, Album)and this information has not been recordedfor the track played, the information willbe replaced by information relating to thename of the file.

SELECTION OF MP3 SESSIONSWITH HYBRID DICSIf a hybrid disc is loaded (Mixed Mode, En-hanced, CD-Extra) also containing MP3 files,the radio automatically starts to play the au-dio session. It is possible to move to theMP3 session whilst playing, by keeping theMEDIA button pressed for more than 2seconds.

IMPORTANT When this function is activated,the radio may take a few seconds to startplaying. Whilst it is checking the disc thewords “CD READING” will appear on the dis-play. If not MP3 files are detected, the radiowill start playing the audio session from thepoint where it was interrupted.

SELECTION OFNEXT/PREVIOUS FOLDERPress the N button to select the next fold-er or the O button to select the previousfolder. The display will show the number andthe name of the folder (e.g. “DIR 2XXXXXX”).XXXXXX: name of the folder (the displaywill only show the first 8 characters). Folder selection is done cyclically: after thelast folder, the first folder is selected andviceversa. If no other folder/track is selected in thenext 2 seconds, the first track in the newfolder will be played.If the last track on the folder currently select-ed is being played, the next folder will beplayed.

FOLDERS STRUCTURE The radio with MP3 player:❍ recognizes the folders that effectively

contain MP3 format files❍ if the MP3 files on a CD-ROM are struc-

tured in “sub-folders”, their structure iscompressed to a single level structurewhere the “sub-folders” lead to the lev-el of the main folders.
