Many Thoughts and Perhaps, a Connection

Inquire Within They were right all along. One should not judge a book by its cover. Whether you’re a hockey fan or not, you may have heard that a former Wild hockey player, Derek Boogaard died this past week. He was 28 years old. For those who are not aware of Mr. Boogaard, while on the ice, he was anything but a gentleman. In fact, Derek was one of the fiercest players to ever play the game. (All around the league, Derek was known to pound anyone who was out to get one of his teammates. So much so, his nickname was: “The Boogie Man.”) Since his unfortunate death, many reports have surfaced about Derek and, much to my surprise, it turns out that he was not like most people assumed.

Actually, a common thread in all the remarks is as follows: Derek was a kind, gentle, generous human being who was nothing like his hockey persona.

A nother recent example, albeit to

a lesser degree, is the death of baseball great Harmon Killebrew. Harmon’s nickname was: “Killer.” Now – those who followed Twins baseball closely, knew that the nickname was given to him only because he hit the baseball so hard. The day Harmon died, I read a few articles about him, and I was struck by a few things. A. Many years ago,

Time magazine wrote of Harmon Killebrew: “He is so quiet that storywriters have given up trying to jazz up his image.” Hardly sounds like a “Killer” to me.”

Pa s t o r L i l l e j o r d C o n ’ t The End of the World Or Just Another Day in Paradise Evangelist, Harold Camper of Oakland California has been predicting that Judgment Day will be May, 21, 2011. He has even gone viral with the urgent message that Jesus is coming back and millions of people are, essentially, on "the chopping block." Well, if you never received this newsletter, either the post office goofed up or Harold was right. However, here's what we must keep in mind. Harold also predicted that the world would end on September 6, 1994. I guess, sooner or later, if Harold keeps predicting the end of the world, he'll be right someday. (Or, at the very least, he might guess the right year, month, week.) For myself, I'm just going to trust in the Lord and ask God to help and guide me each and every day, and live each day to the fullest. Even the Demise of Ronald McDonald is Drawing Near There is a group protesting Ronald McDonald. They claim it’s time for him to retire. Their claim is multi-facited. They don’t like that he’s a clown. They’re also upset that Happy Meals come with toys. As a parent, may I suggest two options: 1) Stop giving out toys with the Happy Meal, since all they do is fall apart in 10 minutes. 2) Give the money it takes to make the toys to a local charity. Also, a group of Philadelphia nuns wants McDonald’s to

(Continued on page 3)

like. How he or she dresses. How someone talks. The kind of music they listen to or enjoy. Where they live. How much money – how much education – how much stuff someone has – or doesn’t have. Now, I know, sometimes if it swims like a duck, sounds like a duck, and walks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. Yet, people are not ducks. Instead, we’re a lot more complicated. We human beings have many layers. Layers that are not immediately noticed or easily recognized. And so, many people will surprise and impress us when we care enough to inquire within. The Clock Is Ticking A couple of weeks ago I saw a piece on the local news that followed a woman for one year as she dealt with cancer. Now, because of what I see in my line of work, a lot of it was not new for me. The shock. The denial. The pain. The terrible treatments. The hope. The disappointing test results. The feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Coupled with immense gratitude for all the support, well-wishes and prayers. At the end of the segment, however, the woman did say something that I simply cannot get out of my head. “As soon as someone says, you have cancer, the stopwatch starts. In other words, from that moment, you know that your

(Continued from page 1) life is ebbing away. You know that life is transient and, someday, sooner or later, you will die. Understanding that truth, has helped me to live my life a lot differently than I did before. I now have different priorities. I now focus on what I really want to do in and with my life.”

W hy wait for a diagnosis to realize that the clock

is ticking. Truth is, every day we get a little closer to heaven. A popular way of dealing with this has been to construct what is called: “A Bucket List.” It’s a list of things we want to do and/or accomplish before we: “kick the bucket.” What have you always wanted to do in your life but, you’ve never had the courage, you’ve never taken the time – or – you’ve always assumed that you had more than enough time? It could be jumping out of an airplane. However, it could be a lot less daring – like learning how to draw or dance. It could be a trip to Europe. It could be a trip around the world. Or, it could be touring your childhood home. No matter what it might be, right now might be the best time of all. If we hurry and do what we really want to do in our lives, and, we end up living for many, many years thereafter, isn’t that what they call: “Having your cake and eating it, too?”

examine its own “policy response” to obesity and other diet-related diseases in kids. Two thoughts: 1- Of course it’s related! 2- Don’t nuns have better things to do? What to Think of it All? I’m so glad that there’s a place called Mount Calvary where we

(Continued from page 2) can gather and be warm and receptive to all people. Where even though we know that the world is troubled and so are we, we meet with the Word of God, faith, hope, love and the support of one another. Granted, we do serve donuts, which are not that healthy. However, we do not hand out toys and there is no clown at Mount Calvary. Well, except for

10:45-11:15 a.m.

All Junior High trip participants and their parents come to this meeting about the details of the upcoming Junior High mission trip in July. You will receive all the information you will need for the trip.

June 22 - August 10

We Serv is a brand new summer youth program which starts this summer! It is being lead by our Seminary Youth Intern Ben Schori, and is open to completed 6th-8th graders. We Serv is short for Wednesday Service and will take place every Wednesday at 9 a.m. this summer from June 22 - August 10 (excluding July 13). Youth will meet at Mount Calvary and from there will be brought to a site such as Feed My Starving Children or Global Health Ministries where they will provide service that will benefit God's children who are in need. They will then eat lunch and reflect on their service experience, and head to a recreational site such as Cascade Bay, Vertical Endeavors, or Grandslam for some fun and good times! The day will end by returning to Mount Calvary at 4 p.m. If anyone is interested in signing up for one, a few, or all of the We Serv events this summer, as a youth, chaperone, or driver, grab a brochure/registration form from the Youth and Family bulletin board located outside Pastor Rome's office, or just ask Beth Jerzak, Ben Schori, or Pastor Jen Rome for more information. Registration is due June 5th.

fruit. If you are in nature and you find a flower, or nest, or feather that brings you delight, you will be reminded that God is our treasure. If you bake something and watch it grow in your oven, you will ponder how God is the leavening agent that changes us to be the person God intended us to be. “Blessed be God forever.”

Worship Young

This summer the Worship Team will be coming up with ideas to make worship inviting to young worshippers. We will keep you posted in some fashion as to what that might be! Pam Carlson [email protected]

God, Our Lifeboat

W hen I was in either high school or college,

I found a card that read, “Dear God, be good to me. The sea is so wide and my boat is so small.” When I was looking through the liturgy plans for summer, the opening for Confession and Forgiveness starts with, “Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the sower, the seed, the fruit; our lifeboat, our treasure, our leaven. Blessed be God forever.” When I saw God referred to a s o u r “ l i f e boa t ” , I immediately remembered the card and how I felt whenever I would read it. There were tempestuous waves and a small wooden boat on the cover. Whenever I felt

overwhelmed with f e e l i n g s o r decisions, I would look at the boat and waves and be reassured that God would take care of me. When I saved the card, I don’t think I actually thought of God being in the boat with me. I felt like I was in the boat alone and God was “out there” watching over me. But now when I read “God, our lifeboat”, I am in the boat and I am in God! The connection is much closer and all encompassing. If you are lucky enough to spend time in a boat or canoe this summer, maybe you will remember that God is your lifeboat. Or maybe, if you plant a garden, you will feel God’s hand with you as you sow the seed that bears the

Pipe Organ Exploratory Group Formed

S everal months ago, the church council approved the formation of an exploratory group to gather information and ultimately make recommendation regarding

Mount Calvary’s possible interest in replacing the existing pipe organ. In the music ministry of Mount Calvary, the organ plays a central role in worship since it is the primary support of congregational singing. Our church is blessed to have a wonderful sanctuary pipe organ, but often, the volume is simply inadequate to fill our worship space--especially when attendance is high and the sanctuary is near capacity. The exploratory group includes Donald Bohm, Michael Buck, Pamela Carlson, Joel Hartmann, Jean Taylor, and Sarah Twedt. Over the course of the summer, we will be visiting other churches with pipe organs, meeting with organ builders, and integrating what we learn with respect to the mission of Mount Calvary and its music ministry. We anticipate having sufficient information to forward a recommendation to council in early 2012. Right now, we are in an early learning phase. We look forward to sharing what we learn throughout the coming months as we embark on this venture.

Adult Handbell Fundraisers

T he Calvary Carillons will be hosting a couple fundraisers this year to defray the cost of their biennial 2012 Handbell Festival which will be

held in Duluth. Some of the ringers have attended these since 1986 and continue to benefit from them. Much thanks to Karen Dare who is serving on the planning committee for these efforts. Your support of these events is greatly appreciated. June 4th – River Hills Day

Enjoy hot dogs, walking tacos, donuts and drinks at 11505 River Hills Drive, Burnsville. Saturday only, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This location is in the center of over 150 garage sales. Stop by to get energized for more bargain hunting. The first hot dog is usually sold around 7:30! Yuk. (er, I mean, YUM!) November 4th and/or November 5th - Fall Handbell Concert

Save the date and watch for ticket sales soon. Each ringer will be decorating and providing a dessert based on the theme "Seasons and Holidays Around the World". The concert repertoire will be pieces that follow this theme. The identical concert will be performed on both nights and is guaranteed to be an event not to miss. Tickets are sure to go fast. Watch the Messenger and Bulletins for more information as it becomes available. A tithe of 10% of the proceeds will be given to the Eagan Resource Center.

So where are we at with our capital appeal, “50 Years of Worship & Service”?

W e began our third capital appeal in January of 2010. In December of 2010, we had collected almost $3,000 for Cameroon, $3,000 for Tanzania and

$6000 for the Eagan Resource Center. In addition, we collected enough to pay our second monthly mortgage of $9,627 per month. However, in 2011, we are running behind in our collections by approximately $5,000. We are currently borrowing the dollars from our second appeal to make the mortgage payments. The second capital appeal dollars were left in an account just in case we ran behind in our collections to pay our mortgage. But with summer here and attendance going slightly down, our collections for this appeal may also take a hit. If you pledged to this capital appeal and have not made your contribution for 2011 yet, I ask that you consider doing so at this time. Keeping up with these mortgage payments is so critical. We have less than two years of payments and our second mortgage will be gone. If you have any questions about what you pledged or contributed, please contact me at 651.454.2344 or [email protected].

How did we do at Lent & Easter this year?

The numbers were on the upswing. Our Lenten worship attendance and our giving for this year was the highest in three years. The same is true for both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Our Easter attendance was higher than 2010 and tied with 2009; however, our giving for 2011 surpassed both years. Our Easter Buffet brought in over $2,200. After expenses, our youth made over $20 per hour worked. These dollars will help the youth going on the summer Sr. High and Jr. High youth trips. Thank you to all that helped make this event a success!

And finally, how is Mount Calvary doing with our general fund?

T he April financial reports have been completed and we are “on target.” Now having said that, if you are one of many members that tend to play catch up

with your contributions in the fall because you attended family reunions, baseball and soccer games, high school and college reunions, etc., I have a solution for you. Our Simply Giving program at Mount Calvary is a painless process that allows you much flexibility. (It is quick and it is simple.) It is an automated giving program through your bank. You decide the dollar amount and the frequency. You can also change both the dollar amount and the frequency at any time. If you need to end this giving program, an email to me will take care of that. Mount Calvary now has on-line entry of the data, so changes to your account can be made quickly. If you are interested in this program, the form is in the brochure rack behind the Welcome Desk. The form is also located on our website under Sharing and then Simply Giving. We currently have 128 families enrolled in this program. If you have any questions, please contact me at 651-454-2344 or [email protected].

Saved from lightening…

T hose were the words I heard last week as I visited the Evangelical Lutheran Hospital of Garoua Boulai, Cameroon last week. Thanks to the generous gift provided by Mount

Calvary last year, their electrical system had been upgraded, which included the addition of lightening arrestors on each building. The first tropical rains of the rainy season had just started and are usually very violent and dangerous. One lightening strike hit the electric meter, which exploded, but thanks to the work done..all the equipment was protected except for one UPS unit that was destroyed. The next closest hospital that is able to provide similar services, very sophisticated lab, ultra sounds and x rays is 350 miles away. Once again many words of thanks were expressed to you all. I had been invited by the Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon (ELCC) for a two week visit with included participation in their Churchwide Assembly that meets once every two years. Delegates came from the 1500 churches of the ELCC, and invited guests from the ELCA-Chicago, Canada, Norway as well as other churches and church organizations in Central Africa. The meeting included many wonderful Bible Studies, worship services as well as dealing with critical issues facing the ELCC and plans for the future. It was held in an area where I grew up, and where my parents had served many years. The Lutheran church is named after my Dad, Congregation of Oscar Noss. I was also informed that another church that I helped in the building process while Karen and I lived there, was named after me. Unfortunately, this trip did not allow me to worship with them at this time, but hopefully I will be able to during my next trip which will be in August. I was thankful that this trip also allowed me to work on some other projects I have been following; finalizing work on the second printing of the Gbaya Bible (language used by 2 million people), the finishing touches of a 12 patient surgery ward and remodeling of the OR in the Ngaoundéré Lutheran Hospital where Karen and I used to live. Funding for the last two projects came from memorial funds following my Aunt’s death, (she had served as a missionary nurse in this hospital for 36 years) as well as funds from the Saint Mary’s Duluth Clinics-Cameroon Health Development Program. What a blessing to have had this time to counsel, pray, and share hopes, dreams and also pain with our African brothers and sisters. Thanks to all of you for your ongoing prayers and support of the Lord’s Mission in Africa. Jim Noss

Eve Circle Eve Circle will meet Tuesday, June 7, at 7 p.m. in the Fireside Room. Our summer study centers on "Renew, Respond, and Rejoice." Please join us as we learn about what and who we are and how we stay spiritually healthy. The cloud of witnesses surrounding us can teach us much about what it means to bring your best self to the life you’ve been given. This summer’s Bible study in Lutheran Woman Today will invite readers into the dynamic web of life anchored by “renew, respond, and rejoice.” This is vocation in the richest sense of that term: Who are you and how are you called to service in a world full of surprises? There is so much to do. How do we stay spiritually healthy in the face of overwhelming need? Our first session, "Renew," in June challenges us to “get unstuck.” The writers explore the issue of hardness of heart. The key verse is Psalm 51:10-12, which begins “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” The session looks at two important stories in the Hebrew Bible, one centered on King David and the other on Hagar. Readers will consider questions such as: How do I know

when and what kind of renewal I need? How can I renew myself when so many others depend on me? Who benefits from my renewal? (LWT web page)

Yoga Classes At

Mount Calvary Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. We have an excellent yoga teacher that comes right here to the Fireside room at Mount Calvary three times each week. Her name is Keri Mangis. Her website is www.trinityyoga.com and her e-mail address is [email protected]. Several members of the Mount Calvary staff attend her classes weekly and really enjoy them. She has been teaching here for several years and is always open to new students checking out her classes. Keri is here on Mondays from noon - 1:00 p.m. and again in the evening from 6:30 - 8:00. On Thursdays, she is here from 10:15 - 11:30 a.m. Let me know if you have any questions about this wonderful program or feel free to contact Keri herself through her website or e-mail address. Namaste! ("The spirit in me respects the spirit in you."). Wendy Lane

They love our b i rd feeders… I hate them for it.

W: What’s your favorite type(s) of music?

D: I guess classic R & B is my favorite, but if I find myself feeling just a little too happy, I listen to country.

W: What are some of your favorite things about Mount Calvary?

D: Mount Calvary is incredibly act ive in communi ty outreach. Not only locally but globally. I love that.

W: What are some ways you have been involved at church?

D: I was on the church council, global social committee… usher occasionally… I’m also one of Pastor Lillejord’s personal graphic designers and photographers.

W: What's your favorite part of worship?

D: The sermons and when my wife (Gail Thompson) and the grandkids sing (not necessarily together).

W: Who influenced you in your faith the most?

D: When I lived in Africa, every day I would hear the Islamic call to prayer just before sunrise…. It reminded me to also pray… I’ve never forgotten that.

W: Which service time do you generally attend?

D: I like the 10:40… usually the pastors have all the bugs worked out of the sermon by then.

W: Thanks so much, Doug!

‘Meet the Congregation’ - This month we'll get to know a little more about Mount Calvary member... Doug Dybsetter. W: (Wendy) What's your

favorite thing to do in the summer? Winter?

D: (Doug) I love being outside…. But my work puts me inside most of the time, but I also work for myself…. So I tell myself … why don’t you go outside today and go biking or something. Winter? I like to cross country ski when it’s not too cold … and shovel snow… I really love to shovel snow. Actually my favorite thing is looking forward to summer.

W: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?

D: I want to go to Norway and see if I can find any of my relatives…. I’m 100% Norwegian and I want to ask them why they think my grandfathers didn’t settle where it’s warmer year around.

W: Are you a "morning person", a "night person", or a little of each?

D: I’ve lived in developing countries for 7 years….. much of that time spent awake at odd hours. I pretty much function any time of the day. You never know when a hyena will come through the window.

W: What are your favorite hobbies? or things to do in your free time?

D: Well that’s diff icult… because what most people do for a hobby I do for a

living. I’m an illustrator, photographer. Probably fitness would be my hobby… working out, biking.

W: Use only three words and describe yourself.

D: Won’t do it. W: What's your favorite TV

show? (or name a few, if that's easier)

D: Used to be Seinfeld…now it’s The Office and Reno 911.

W: Where were you born? D: I was born on a farm

between Canby and Porter, Minnesota. They cleaned me off with straw and put me under a heat lamp…. Or was that pigs we were farrowing?

W: Can you name two or three of your favorite foods?

D: I love beef once a month… tenderloin. My wife is a great cook and we have healthy dishes… stir fry, lots of chicken and turkey…. Low fat.

W: Do you have any pets? D: Well, not domestic… we

have wild pets…. squirrels. It’s a love/hate relationship.
