Commissionersdiscuss raisingwater rates
by Katie FriedmanCorrespondent
Members of the Annan-dale-Maple Lake-HowardLake Wastewater Commis-sion are grappling with adilemma that will likely re-sult in rewarding consumersfor reducing their waterusage with increased rates.
Presenting an estimatedbudget, Secretary Kelly Hin-nencamp told the commis-sioners of difficulties in bal-ancing a fluctuating usage feeagainst the significant fixedcost of a $3 million bondpayment, requesting that aplan-ned rate hike of 50 centsper unit be raised by another25 cents, which she projectedwould raise $60,000 to$70,000 more in revenues.
“There’s trouble everyyear with estimating what ourgallons are,” she explained atthe Aug. 22 meeting, “be-cause we never know if it’sgoing to rain a lot or if it’sgoing to be dry. If our projec-tions are wrong and it endsup being a real dry year, wecould be in a world of hurtnext year or the followingyear.”
County board toembrace socialnetworking
by John Holler
Certain things have neverbeen associated with theWright County Board ofCommissioners, includingdiscussions trending on Twit-ter including #WrightCoun-tyBoard. At a time oftechnology and communica-tion advancements, especiallyfor younger residents, thecounty’s system of operatinghas become a bit antiquated.
That may change as thefour new commissioners, who consider themselvestech-savvy, would like to takethe county out of the 1990sand into the 2010s. As part ofthe Aug. 20 agenda, the com-missioners referred discus-sion concerning significantadvancements to the pre- sen-tation of county board meet-ings and how the countyconducts its business to thetechnology committee’s Sept.11 meeting.
