Special to the Superior Sun

The weather has turned cooler and it is great to see many of our local residents decorating for the fall holidays. I am always excited to see the creativity of

our residents, take some time to cruise your neighborhood or take a walk to see these homes. Over this past month you may have noticed the slogan “I am Superior” being used on social media. This is a new brand that is being adopted throughout our community. It was selected by several residents as a way to promote Superior and build pride in the community. This slogan is part of the Business Attraction and Retention program coordinated through the Superior Chamber of Commerce. We encourage you to start using it in your social media and photos. As we continue to grow this brand and promote our community there will be several outreach opportunities. On Oct. 15, from 3-6 p.m. the Superior Chamber will host an “Insta-meet” where Instagram users can meet up and share their photos. Come out and take pictures of Superior, share them on Instagram and use the hashtag #IAmSuperior to be considered for photo placement on the new Chamber website. A $100 gift certificate will be awarded to one lucky photographer who takes photos and uploads them from Oct. 15-16, check in with the Superior Chamber of Commerce for all of the official details. On Saturday, Oct. 15, there will be tire pick up. If you have tires in your yard that you need to dispose of, leave them on the curb the night before and local volunteers will pick them up. Thank you to Pinal County for providing a

We Are Superior!

dumpster for tires. We are anticipating that our transfer station will be re-opened in early November. Our public works staff have been working hard to get everything in order. A community wide free dump day is being planned for Nov. 5. Our next council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016. The Council will have a work session at 6 p.m. to discuss the policies for the transfer station, the repairs at the Waste Water Treatment Plant and status on our audits. Our regular meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

On Sept. 24, 2016, an officer with the Superior Police Department made a routine traffic stop on US Highway 60 at mile marker 224. They pulled over the car because the license plate was too faded to read. Once the car was pulled over, Officer Bryan Lawrence and his K-9 partner Ace were brought in. The pit-bull narcotic dog gave an alert, which meant there were possible drugs in the car. According to Officer Lawrence the

driver admitted to having two marijuana cigarettes. Upon searching the car almost eight pounds of high grade marijuana was seized along with a handgun. The driver was charged with a weapon misconduct in the commission of a felony drug offense. In the two months the new narcotics team has been on the job, K-9 Ace has had seven positive alerts that have resulted in some sort of drug arrest. This is the second largest bust in Ace’s short but successful career.

Superior Police makes another significant drug bust with the

help of its new K-9 team

Superior Police want citizens to know that they will take all clown threats seriously, and more so now following lockdowns at Miami and Globe schools last week. On Thursday, Oct. 6, at 8:13 a.m., Superior Police were notified that several schools in the Globe-Miami area were on lockdown because of a threat on Facebook. Gila County Sheriff’s Office said the threat came from “a Facebook page threatening to ‘shoot up’ the schools,” Superior Police Chief David Neuss told the Superior Sun in an email. “The Facebook page name was identified as ‘SupiTown Klown’ which depicted a picture of a clown as the profile picture,” he added. The page, he said, was deleted shortly after it was posted and officials from the Superior Police Department, Gila County Sheriff’s Office and the Superior School District were unable to identify a suspect. The lockdowns were lifted at approximately 10 a.m. and it is believed the threats were likely a hoax or prank. Over the last several months, there have been numerous nationwide reports of people dressed as clowns trying to scare or chase people, attempting to lure people into wooded areas and several other reports of threats being made on social media towards schools. The “clown scare” pranks have spanned the country, being reported in over 38 states including two recent reports in Arizona. The first incident occurred in Mesa on Sept. 30. A Facebook page named “Ain’t Clowning Around”

Superior Police address issue of ‘SupieTown Klown’threatened to go to high schools and kidnap and kill teachers and students, similar to events that had reported in other states. The second report from Phoenix resulted in two teenagers being arrested for robbing a Taco Bell and a Dominos Pizza dressed as clowns. The clown scare pranks have escalated significantly in recent months, likely due to media coverage and an increase of stories and videos on social media such as Facebook and YouTube. This has prompted people to “copy cat” the events and even make false reports of clown sightings or attacks. One report indicated a person dressed as a clown had been shot in the head in Indiana, which was later determined to be a hoax, likely to spread more panic and concern regarding the clown prank incidents. These events have resulted in many schools throughout the country banning clown costumes for Halloween and police departments cautioning their citizens they could be arrested for dressing as a clown for Halloween if someone

feels threatened. “This is the first reported clown incident in Superior and although there has been no evidence to indicate the threat is legitimate, Superior Police Department takes this threat seriously,” Neuss said. Residents are encouraged to remain attentive and report any suspicious activity or behavior to the Superior Police Department. Superior Police Department also requests anyone with information regarding the “SupieTown Klown” incident to report it to the police immediately.

The No. 2-ranked Superior football team overcame its first real adversity this season to defeat a game Hayden team last Friday night, 42 – 12. Don’t let the score fool you, the No. 8-ranked Lobos gave the Panthers all they could handle for more than quarter and even held a 6 – 0 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was the first time all season that Superior trailed in a game. “Hayden had a good game plan against us,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer said after the game. “They did a good job of coming at us and they were able to go down the field on a long scoring drive.” The Panthers finally starting rolling with about nine minutes remaining in the second quarter and went on to outscore the Lobos 42 – 6 from that point on. Senior quarterback Nicolaus Cruz threw for 330 yards and six touchdowns in the win. He also rushed for a team-high 65 yards. Senior receiver Austin Navarrette hauled in three of Cruz’ scoring passes. Marcos Bueno (two) and Jesus Catellanos (one) caught the other three. The Panthers’ 42 points scored were a season low. “Give Hayden credit because they came to play,” Palmer said. “I didn’t like how we came out and fell behind, but I was proud of the way our kids fought back and regained control of the game. Experiencing that type of adversity will bode well for the Panthers in the playoffs. This game also should benefit Hayden, which proved it can compete with the best teams in the state. Superior closes out it regular season this Friday on Senior Night versus Ray. Hayden will host San Manuel in its regular season finale. Kickoff for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Hank Gutierrez and his wife Tina moved out of Superior as young adults. Hank began his career in the telecommunications field before cell phones

existed and definitely before a blue tooth device could run your entire home from far away. The days were much simpler, installing phone lines and making repairs, but it was that experience that opened a variety doors for him. He worked for 35 years in the telecommunication industry, working for major corporations like Lucent, AT&T and Avaya. During his career, he began planning and strategizing the business he planned to open when he retired. That is how Ubiquity Telecommunications began. Ubiquity Telecommunications offers a variety of services for local businesses including project management, fiber installation, network cutoff, data cabling installation, Cisco end user training and overall telecommunication connectivity consultations. Hank returned to Superior after working in Salt Lake City for the Winter Olympics. “We came home because it was so beautiful. We never really planned on coming back,” he said. He and his wife Tina decided that moving that opening Ubiquity Telecommunications in Superior was a smart move. “I wanted to provide my services to rural and eastern Arizona, Superior was a good launching point for that,” explained Hank. His end goal of his business is to transfer the knowledge he has to young adults, so they can have the same opportunities that he has had in his career.

His advice to his fellow entrepreneurs and those considering opening a business: “Have a passion for the business you are in and have a clear understanding of the job you need to accomplish.” He advises that if you are planning to work in the telecommunications industry, you should anticipate working on weekends, evening and holidays to accommodate the business community work

schedule. He recommends being skillful in developing relationships and networking. Hank and Tina Gutierrez are very active members of the community when they are not busy running Ubiquity Telecommunications. They also enjoy spending quality time with their children, grandchildren, family and friends.

The downtown corridor of historic Globe will be a pageant of color and sound on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016 as the 33rd annual Apache Jii (Day) celebration gets under way. A full day of entertainment, arts and crafts booths and savory foods is planned for the event, which will be held in front of the historic courthouse in downtown Globe. Tribal royalty in full traditional dress and native entertainers from flute players to hoop dancers will be on hand for a day packed with activities. The day begins in the courthouse square at the

corner of Broad and Oak, one block east of the US 60 highway. Opening ceremonies begin at 9 and then it’s on to a full day of entertainment, shopping and native foods. Booths featuring jewelry, painting, beading, wood and stone carving and more are planned for the street fair. Several demonstration booths are planned with artists showing the intricacies of beading, rock work and weaving. Entertainment, including crown dancers, b dancers and native flute players, is planned throughout the day and no one will go hungry if they stop by the food booths which will feature everything

from delicious Apache fry bread and Indian tacos to more traditional dishes like acorn stew. Live art demonstrations by three young artists will be under way at 10 am; these large scale works will take form throughout the day in a special demonstration area. There is no admission charge for Apache Jii; the festival has grown every year and offers a unique chance for visitors to talk one-on-one with Native Americans from throughout the Southwest. There is nothing like choosing a piece of jewelry or artwork

after visiting with the artist who designed it. The Fernando Cellicion dance troupe from the Zuni Tribe is one of the featured dance groups. They were named top group for the recent White Mountain Apache Tribal Fair. Also joining us are two crown dance groups from White Mountain. Basket Dancers from Gila River, flute players Robert Wilson and Nobert Allen will also be performing. One of the featured demonstration artists this year is Petroglyph Expert David Morris, a member of the Choctaw nation and an ethno-botanist; a skilled storyteller - with a penchant for puns. He’s a featured exhibitor this year for the Apache Jii event sharing his knowledge of ancient rock art; David volunteers as an Arizona Site Steward to help protect and preserve the ancient petroglyphs of the Hieroglyphic Trail in the Superstitions. He’s a modern-day rock artist too, painstakingly chiseling his own spirals,

PHOENIX – The Queen Creek Tunnel on US 60 east of Superior now has a light-emitting diode (LED) lighting system, making it Arizona’s first tunnel to have this innovative and energy-saving technology. To clean the tunnel’s walls and ceilings after this installation, US 60 in the area will be closed in both directions for six hours every night beginning the evening of Monday, Oct. 10, and ending early Friday, Oct. 14. The closures, which are scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. and end at 4 a.m., will be in effect between Superior at milepost 226 and Oak Flat at milepost 231. The closure points allow commercial trucks to turn around and will avoid stopping traffic on the steep grade closer to the tunnel. An alternate route connecting with US 60 in Superior and Globe is along State Route 77 and State Route 177. Motorists

headed to the White Mountains region, including Show Low and Springerville, may want to consider taking State Route 87 and State Route 260 through Payson. The new lighting system improves visibility in the tunnel, which was built in 1952, by using an adaptive control system that will adjust the lighting level based upon ambient light and weather conditions outside. It will also save money on electricity and reduce the need for maintenance. ADOT secured a $1 million federal grant in 2014 to help fund this project. ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but it’s possible that unscheduled closures or restrictions might occur because of weather or other factors. For the latest highway conditions around the state, visit ADOT’s Travel Information Site at az511.gov, follow us on Twitter (@ArizonaDOT) or call 511.

Queen Creek Tunnel on US 60 receives LED lighting system; cleaning tunnel after installation requires four overnight closures east of Superior
