By car, by foot or by bike – around every turn lies anotherlandscape to explore and a new treasure to discover.
The Boardwalk
The mind-boggling variety of attractions on Ocean City’sBoardwalk has made it a family vacation favorite since thefirst planks were nailed down back in the 1880s.
The boards have been moved around and rebuilt almostcontinuously since those early days. Stretching from 1st to23rd Street, today’s Boardwalk is two and a half miles ofclean, well-maintained attractions for fun-lovers of every age– with amusement rides, arcades, miniature golf, traditionalseaside snacks, casual dining and eclectic shopping.

Whether you’re eating your way from oneend to the other or taking a brisk walk toburn off the calories, the Boardwalk is alsoOcean City’s entertainment central. In thesummer months, you’ll encounter live musicboth on the boards and at the Music Pier, magicians, clowns and other strolling enter-tainers, art shows, parades (for people andpets) – even karaoke competitions. See theEvents Calendar to learn more.
South of 14th Street, the Boardwalk takes onmarkedly different ambience. The boards bi-sect a wide dune field and the majestic quietof some of the city’s most beautiful backyardgardens. It’s a stunning place to stroll.
The Boardwalk remains a spot to see and beseen – a scenic platform where both vaca-tioners and locals stroll, jog, bike, shop, snack and play while taking in the salt airand breathtaking beauty of Ocean City’sblue sea and sky.

Ocean City’s business district remains a des-tination. It’s a manicured and pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with a collection ofshops and one-of-a-kind boutiques – eachwith a unique personality.
Like the Boardwalk, Asbury Avenue has itsown schedule of special events and enter-tainment, including the famous spring andfall Block Parties, live music, kids’ activitiesand a parade of parades – including theone-of-a-kind Doo Dah Parade, celebratingthe end of tax season each April. See theEvents Calendar to learn more.
The Bay and Marina District
Ocean City’s sugar-sand ocean beaches tellonly half the story. On the western coast, asystem of bays, lagoons and estuaries sepa-rate our barrier island from the mainland. It’s a landscape of calm waters, wildlife andexpanses of color framed by stately dock-front homes, boaters, water skiers, fisher-men and picture-postcard sunsets.
It’s where you can grab a bite, rent a Jet-Ski,climb aboard a party boat for some deep-sea fishing, take a pleasure cruise aroundthe island or find just the right piece of gearyou need for a fishing excursion or sailingadventure. And there are plenty of spots todrop a fishhook or crab line.
In the middle of town, the bay and la-goons become the site of an Ocean Citysummer tradition, the festive celebrationof Night in Venice, one of the world’slargest boat parades.
Here, too, you’ll find the Bayside Center, ahistoric home converted into a museumand institute of study devoted to the backbays. See the Stuff to Do section for more information.
North End
Known as The Gardens, the neighborhoodsof Ocean City’s northern tip are quiet andbeautiful, with curving streets lined withhandsome homes in a diversity of architec-tural styles.
Overlooking Great Egg Harbor Inlet, withdramatic views of Atlantic City, the beacheshere are wide and peaceful. Traffic is lighterin this part of town, making it a pleasantplace to hike or bike in search of some soli-tude, a bite to eat, a new piece of beachgear or a vantage point to watch the surfersdancing on the waves.
South End
Largely residential, Ocean City’s south endalso has its share of nifty shops and cafés.Wide avenues make it a favorite for bicy-clists – and nature lovers flock south ontheir way to Corson’s Inlet State Park, a pic-turesque area of unspoiled, undevelopedbeach and dunes on the island’s southerntip. Parasailing
Towed by motorboat, a tethered parachuteputs you on an airborne perch for an incred-ible birds-eye view of the island and its sur-roundings. It’s a ride you won’t soon forget.
Surfing
When the surf’s up, surfers flock to theclean, white-sand beaches to put their skillsto the test. That’s a board meeting, OceanCity style. Surfing is permitted at WaverlyBoulevard and at 7th and 16th Streets. (Seethe Beach section for details.) Check thelocal surf shops for wave reports, boardsrentals and lessons, too.
Other watercraft
The fresh breeze and clean waters sur-rounding Ocean City also combine to gener-ate excellent conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Safety first
Wearing a USCG-approved personal flotationdevice is required for both operators and pas-sengers in the waters off the New Jersey coast.
Boat launches
Two boat ramps serve the island. The mu-nicipal boat ramp is located on the bay atTennessee Avenue between 22nd and 23rdStreets. Land the big oneSomething fishy is going on here. In fact a lotfishy is going on here! Ocean City is in primeposition for some of the most thrilling andchallenging sportfishing in the East – plusthere are plenty of spots for more casual an-glers to drop a line and try their luck. Frombluefish to weakfish and lots in between, theaction goes virtually year-round.
Know the rules
You do not need a license to fish the saltwa-ter surrounding Ocean City, but fishing issubject to quotas, size limits and other regu-lations. Licenses are required for harvestingclams and other shellfish. You’ll find all theinformation you need in the New Jersey Fishand Wildlife Digest, available at local baitshops and tackle dealers. Online, learnmore at nj.gov/dep/fgw.
Surf fishing is allowed:
• Anytime on unguarded beaches
• Anytime Corson’s Inlet State Park on theisland’s southern tip
• On guarded beaches before and after life-guards are on duty
Fun close to shore
Anglers working the surf land bluefish, flounder, sea bass, tautog (blackfish), king-fish, shark and the famous striped bass(rockfish). Fisherman flock to the beachduring the “blitz,” when stripers passthrough by the thousand, following schoolsof bunker. Spring and autumn bluefish runsare equally dramatic, as the feeding reachesfrenzy proportions.
In the bays and creeks, weakfish (sea trout)are a favorite quarry, along with sea bass,“snapper” blues, croaker and flounder. Justnorth of town, parts of the old Longportbridge has been converted to a fishing pier. And south of town the Ocean Drive/RushChattin bridge was designed specially to ac-commodate anglers.
The tasty blueclaw crab is easy to catch withline or trap in the backbays and creeks. Kidslove outsmarting the feisty crustaceans. Askthe bait shop for a rundown on size limits.
Bigger fish, bigger action offshore
New Jersey’s offshore waters are world fa-mous for spine-tingling sportfishing action.Above the ridges, canyons, wrecks andreefs, anglers take prize-winning tuna, mahi (dorado), blue and white marlin, shark, wahoo and more. West of thecounty, the vast Delaware Bay yields morevarieties, including drumfish, sheepshead, channel catfish and more.
Ask the experts
To learn what’s running and which baits andlures are doing the trick, just ask at any ofOcean City’s fishing docks and tackle shops.News travels fast around here – especiallywhen fish stories are the topic.

And few places on earthhave so many ways to satisfy the sweettooth, with ice cream, fruit smoothies, funnelcakes, water ice, handmade candy, donutsand caramel popcorn. You can go back onyour diet tomorrow, right?

The menu of menu choices is impressive onAsbury Avenue between 6th and 11thstreets and in the surrounding blocks. Awalk down the Avenue unearths dozens ofculinary treasures, from gourmet to get-it-and-go, pizza, subs, sweets and coffee.

cean City’s history is a rich tapestry of
events stretching back to the late
19th century.
Years before the first European settlers
dubbed it “Peck’s Beach,” the island was
a summer fishing camp for native Leni-
Lenape people and also served as a grazing
land for cattle driven from the mainland. The
barrier island of dunes, meadows, beach and
cedar swamps likely took its first name from
John Peck, who used the island as a staging
area for his shore-based whaling operation.
Historyo f O c e a n C i t y
www.oceancityvacation.com | 1-800-BEACH-NJ126
H I S T O R Y
OOriginal ownership of the land is traced to the family ofRichard Somers, one of America’s first naval heroes.Only an intrepid few made their homes here, as gettingon and off the island was exclusively by water.
The seeds of a future city were sown in 1879, whenfour Methodist ministers saw in Peck’s Beach the idealplace to establish a Christian retreat and camp meet-ing. Ezra B. Lake, James Lake, S. Wesley Lake andWilliam Burrell coined the name “Ocean City,” laid outa street grid, built utilities and sold lots for cottages, ho-tels and businesses.
The first building of what would become theTabernacle was finished in 1881, along withthe island’s first school. The first bridge wentup in 1883 and the railroad soon followed, bringing both the devout in search of reli-gious retreat and vacationers seeking solacefrom the noise and grime of the city.
Since those early days, Ocean City hastransformed itself into “America’s GreatestFamily Resort,” a top-rated vacation destina-tion. The Tabernacle is still a dynamic placefor praise and worship. The legacy of thefounders also remains in the absence of
liquor sales within the city limits. Its statusas a “dry” town is one important reasonOcean City has become a family favorite.
To learn more, visit the Historic Museum at17th St. & Simpson Ave. The entire timelineis cataloged and preserved there: the growthof the early city and Boardwalk, the 1901wreck of the four-masted Sindia, the 1927fire and the battle over “Blue Laws” – OceanCity has remained a sought-after vacationdestination through all the economic andpolitical changes Americans have seen overthe past 130 years.
