Happy Birthday! APNC Submitted by Matt Van Hook
Update from the Associate Pastor Nomina!ng
Commi"ee (APNC)
Exci"ng news! As you might have
heard, we made an offer to our
top choice candidate for the
associate pastor posi"on and the candidate has
accepted! We’re s"ll working out a specific date, but our
hope is that the associate pastor will begin in July. A
li%le over a year ago (in April 2015), we all together
voted to move forward with seeking an associate pastor
and made a commitment to fund the posi"on. Now, as
we’re nearing the end of the hiring process, we’re
approaching a new chapter in the life of our church. The
candidate will be in Omaha over the weekend of June 12
and will be preaching and leading the worship service
that Sunday (remember, we switch to a single 10:00am
worship service star"ng in June). Immediately following
the worship service, there will be a congrega"onal
mee"ng to hear the report from the APNC and vote on
the hire. We’re also planning several social events so
that members of the Hope congrega"on can have the
opportunity to meet the candidate in an informal se&ng
(stay tuned for details!). Mark that all on your calendars
and plan to a%end! We’re thrilled about this candidate
and can’t wait to begin this new chapter at Hope.

worthwhile project that Hope Church has embraced wholeheartedly! IF you are interested in you and
your family, friends or small group taking over a month (all by yourselves), please contact Mark Canady or the church

ABIDE Ministries
In 1989, Ron and Twany Dotzler started the Abide network in North Omaha with a vision that Omaha would have no
more inner city. Their mission is to transform the inner city, one neighborhood at a "me, by building strong neighbors
who care for each other and want to create a be%er life for their families and fellow neighbors. Abide provides a
holis"c approach that focuses on developing healthy neighborhoods through four main areas: community building,
family support programs, housing and partnerships.
An Abide philosophy is that you can build strong communi"es in Omaha through a neighborhood
approach. Neighbors who know each other are more likely to help each other. At Abide, they host
dozens of community outreach events. These events help to engage residents and as neighbors interact
with each other, a natural support network for the community is built. Their approach also allows them
to help the community understand what types of programs they can access for different services
available.
Abide hosts block par"es during the summer at Fontanelle Park to bring the community together. They typically have
2,000+ community members a%end. The next Abide block party is June 11, Hope is pu&ng together a team to help
with games and serve food. If you would like to help this great cause please contact JB Turner 402-669-3753. h%p://
www.abideomaha.org/events/event/be%ertogetherblockparty/
Abide’s housing program, which they call Lighthouses, is a unique opportunity to impact neighborhoods. Through
transforming a run-down, dilapidated property from an eye-sore to a thing of beauty, Abide is able to bring hope and
life to the surrounding neighbors and neighborhood. Addi"onally, Abide recruits families to live in these remodeled
houses as a community resource, to build rela"onships and bridges for neighbors to access programs and services, thus
bringing holis"c healthiness to families and neighborhoods. Lighthouse families become neighborhood advocates by
coordina"ng posi"ve community-building ac"vi"es. A Lighthouse is a safe and encouraging home where a harmonious
rela"onship of residents works alongside one another to build a strong neighborhood and a great city. Placing families
in Lighthouses is a simple strategy to being the eyes and ears of the community. So far Abide has renovated 20
proper"es including three that were finished in 2014. Currently there are seven proper"es under renova"on including
five received within the last year. These renovated houses help to deter crime and promote community throughout the
neighborhoods.
Hope began a partnership with Abide about 2 years ago. In that "me, we have donated proceeds from our annual
mission garage sale and started a 3 on 3 community basketball tournament that raised funds for Abide’s programs.
Hope’s Men’s Group and Hope II have been to Abide’s main loca"on at 3335 Fowler for a tour of the north Omaha
Lighthouse neighborhoods. Kathy Andersen started a prayer group dedicated to praying for the work Abide is doing
and their needs. This year’s Rebuilding Together neighborhood that Hope par"cipated in were Abide Lighthouse
neighborhoods. As Hope grows in this partnership, we plan to work with Abide to “adopt” one block in a north Omaha
Lighthouse neighborhood and begin to work with that Lighthouse family. We plan to form a team that will par"cipate
in BBQs, neighborhood yard work, home remodeling, and all the prayer and support requested from our adopted
Lighthouse family. If you are interested in making a powerful difference in our city and bridging the gap between west
and north Omaha as part of this team, please contact Brian Claus 402-616-5232, brian"[email protected] .
MISSION SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH Submitted by Brian Claus
Pastor’s Pen Pastor’s Pen Pastor’s Pen by Pastor Dave Matsumuraby Pastor Dave Matsumuraby Pastor Dave Matsumura
Dear Friends,
How would you describe our church? How would
you describe who we are and what we’re about?
How about our spirituality? How about our
emo"onal condi"on? Or our role, purpose, and
reason for living? How would you describe our
health, connectedness, or faith? How would you
describe where we’ve been, where we are now and
where we hope to go in the future?
These ques"ons and others have been on my heart
and mind for some "me now. I’ve been wrestling
with the condi"on of our church and whether we are
heading in the right direc"on, heeding our call from
Christ, or whether we are on a slide toward demise
and ul"mately death. Some folks have decided we
are on that slide and have le; us to find other places
to worship. We grieve their decision to leave
especially because we have known and loved them
for any number of years. Others have joined us
believing that we are on the right path, that our
setbacks are temporary and they want to join us in
worship, ministry and mission. We rejoice over their
decision and look forward to coming to know and
love them more as we walk together in Christ.
But what is that path? What describes who we are,
how we want to live and how we want to be known?
The phrasing on our publica"ons is: “Loving God,
Loving Others, and Living in Grace.” That is one way
to describe what we are trying to do and how we are
trying to live our lives. We try to love God with our
whole being and we try to love others because that’s
what Christ did and commanded us to do. We try to
live in grace recognizing, as Paul said in Romans
3:23, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God,” so we are in no posi"on to condemn others.
We understand that people of good faith will
some"mes disagree on ma%ers of faith and religion
yet we are called to try and live in community as
Christ’s body. To that end we accept a diversity of
beliefs as long as love is the underlying mo"va"on
and principle.
Another descrip"on of who we are as a church is the
metaphor of a business. In that metaphor we are a
service business with Christ as our CEO, you and I as
his staff/employees. Those in our larger community
are our clients whom we strive to serve in the way
that Christ desires. When we focus solely on keeping
ourselves happy we confuse who the clients are and
who the staff/employees are. We forget that we are
accountable to Christ as our CEO and that we are in
his business, not our own. While we have benefits
as employees our role is to serve our “boss” by
serving our clients.
As we compare ourselves to other churches we are
able to see that some churches focus solely on their
members. They are walled and the church is seen as
the bas"on of the faithful, exis"ng to protect those
inside from the onslaught of the world around them.
Others are seen as a one-stop shopping mall where
the members have all their needs addressed within
the walls of the church and have no need to interact
with anyone outside of the church. This church is
differen"ated from the first only by the amount of
money and services they provide and by the
eleva"on of social ac"vi"es. Everything is good as
long as everything is good. Country Club Chris"ans is
the descriptor that comes to mind. Another church
has permeable walls where people move in and out
freely, coming in to be fed and going out to serve.
This church is commi%ed to mission, disciplining
their members and engaged in their community.
Another church is a sending church that purposely
keeps itself at a certain size and is constantly star"ng
offspring churches, nurturing them un"l they are
able to func"on on their own. I’m sure there are
other descriptors of churches out there, but which of
these types of churches describe us? Which do you
want to be descrip"ve of us? Why?
In my reflec"ons I’ve come to the conclusion that we
have dri;ed in our iden"ty because of some
leadership woes, losses of some friends through

death and dissension and fogginess about our core
beliefs. On a personal note I’m well aware of what
happened to me because of burnout before my
sabba"cal. As I’ve shared with you that sabba"cal
got my nose above water and I’ve been working
hard to con"nue the process of moving toward
health; healthy prac"ces and healthy boundaries.
One thing that is evident to me in this is that I had
lost my drive and vision from God for myself and for
my work at Hope. I was basically in a state of
survival, just hanging on, doing what was necessary
but nothing more, having no crea"vity, no energy
and no hope. That is a terrible way to live.
Thankfully I am redeveloping my vision of who I am
and what I am called to do and be. I believe I s"ll
have a purpose and ministry at Hope. I do not want
to just hang on . I want to help us live into our
calling as Christ’s Hope Presbyterian church and
return to firmer ground as a community of believers.
I want to rebuild our strong youth program and
become the church known for loving our immediate
community and the greater Omaha area by ac"vely
expressing love through missions. I want us to be
the church where people marvel at the love we
show for each other and for those who are different
than us. Actually some of you have been doing that
all along and I’m grateful for your witness.
Selfless love, the kind of love Jesus lived and taught,
the love that Christ’s death and resurrec"on
revealed about God and the Spirit of God empowers
in those who are open to it is at the core of my
understanding of who I am and what God calls me to
do and be. This has been the hallmark of our
congrega"on from before my tenure. We have
always been a healing place for hur"ng people. We
have always reached out to others to be helpful.
God’s Spirit working in and through us to love others
in generous and selfless ways is what draws people
to our church. The hurts and wounds of the past
sensi"zes us to the hurts and wounds of others and
we have been in the business of addressing people’s
wounds for a long "me. And now we will con"nue
the process along with the ministry help that our
new Associate Pastor will bring.
I look forward to this renewal stage of our journey
together and I invite you to join with the leaders of
the church and me as we move forward together.
May God con"nue to guide and direct us toward
newness of life individually and communally as
Christ’s body as Hope Presbyterian Church.
Blessing Abound!
Dave
Pastor Dave
“Out of the believer’s “Out of the believer’s “Out of the believer’s

~ John 7: 38 NRSV~ John 7: 38 NRSV~ John 7: 38 NRSV
Last year the congrega"on decided it was "me for Hope Church to hire an Associate Pastor to help carry out our
dreams of spreading God’s word, and help us and our kids grow our faith. It is exci"ng that we are ge&ng close to
having an Associate Pastor at Hope. We have a financial responsibility to support our church so the church can
succeed in carrying out what we say we want to do. As reported in the January congrega"onal mee"ng, Hope Church
has spent more money than it has taken in three out of the last four years. Currently, this year we have spent $22,927
more than we have taken in. At this current rate, our cash reserves will be gone by the end of the year.
On June 5th
we are having a Commitment Sunday. The intent is to give everyone an opportunity to get closer to
"thing. When the congrega"on gets closer to "thing, its financial problems will disappear. In fact we will be able to
do so much more to help more people in our community and spread God’s good will. In 2015 $363,082 was pledged
to Hope Church, and in 2016, $363,688 was pledged, basically the exact same amounts. For the
church to meet its financial obliga"ons it needs to increase its revenue by 15%. That means to be
healthy, the overall amount pledged to Hope needs to be increased by 15%. For example if a person’s
current pledge is $200/month, that pledge would need to be increased to $230/month to help the
church meet its current responsibili"es. Prayerfully consider what is right for you. If the church does
not increase its revenues the Session will be forced to take some cost-cu&ng measures. You will be
receiving pledge cards at church and/or in the mail. Make sure to come for the light brunch on
Commitment Sunday, June 5th
at 9am followed by the service at 10am and turn in your new pledge
for the last six months of the year.
Yours in Christ

Are you thinking about joining Hope? We’ll be holding a new member class for all who
are interested in becoming members.
Wednesday, June 15th, 6-9pm Dinner will be served!
Please also plan to attending the Session meeting on June 28th, 6-7 pm.
We will spend some time in fellowship and getting to know one another. Our time together will also involve some paperwork, teaching
about our church and Presbyterian beliefs, expectations of members, personal timelines, and conversation about faith journeys.
Childcare will be available if needed.
Please RSVP to Outreach Elder Matt Van Hook at
[email protected] or 401-368-1233 (yes, 401 area code!)
Please tell Matt if you will require childcare.
The outreach team has scheduled a new member class for Wednesday, June 15th from 6-9pm. This is an opportunity
for folks who are interested (or who might be interested) in joining Hope to come and learn more about Hope and the
Presbyterian denomina"on, get to know one another, find out how to get involved, etc. If you’re interested or know
someone who might be, please send an email to Ma% Van Hook ([email protected]) and we’ll add you to the list.
Dinner will be provided and we can arrange childcare as well. Addi"onally, the outreach team is always looking for folks
to get involved and join the team. In addi"on to providing meals for new member classes, we have a rota"ng schedule
to hand out Hope coffee mugs to Sunday morning guests. Please get in touch with Ma% if you’re interested.
OUTREACH Submitted by Matt Van Hook , Outreach Elder
The Pantry of Hope con"nues helping our community. 140 food items were distributed from April 20 – May
19, 2016. The Pantry exists to help hungry people. Your generous dona"ons help those in need.
Summer presents a "me of uncertainty for kids without consistent access to food. With school out of session, kids who
rely on free or reduced-price school meals find themselves without the safety net of those meals, and families who are
struggling financially face an added strain of providing more meals.
Foods that you enjoy at your house are perfect to donate. We make good use of all non-perishable items.
Thanks for your support.
A long-awaited Bunko night was held on May 6, with 24 people par"cipa"ng. It was a great "me! We will schedule
another later this year. If you have ever considered coming but thought you couldn’t because you’ve never played
before, don’t let that stop you!! If you can roll some dice, you can play! It’s an easy game with plenty of tutors around
