Purpose
-The mission of the WaterPollution Control Plant is toprovide the most effectivecustomer-orientedwastewater collection andtreatment to the citizens ofPainesville.

Where does it come from?
-Wastewater moves to the Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) primarily by gravity flow through sewer lines.-8 lift stations pump sewage from lower lying areas to gravity interceptors.-6 Significant Industrial Users (SIU) also discharge waste to the WPCP.-Septage trucks can discharge with permits as well.

Preliminary Treatment
-The bar screen removes large objects such as rags and plastic from the wastewater which protectspumps and equipment throughout the process.
-Solids such as gravel,sand, or even coffee grounds settle out in thegrit chambers which reduces wear on pumps andother equipment throughoutthe plant.

Primary Treatment
-After leaving the grit chambers the wastewater flow is slowed down and heavier organic material settles to the bottom by gravity.
-The material that settles iscalled sludge or biosolids.
-Sludge from the primaryclarifiers is then pumped to the anaerobic digesters.

Activated Sludge Treatment
-After Primary Clarification, the flow enters aeration where biological treatment of the wastewater takesplace. At the beginning of aeration the flow is mixed with activated sludge. This contains countless microorganisms, such as bacteria, that are able to break down the organic contaminants dissolved in the wastewater.

Secondary Treatment
-From the Aeration Tanks water flows to the Final Clarifiers where the activated sludge settles to the bottom and it is pumped back to the beginning of the Aeration Tanks-The final clarifiers remove additional suspended solids and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).

Tertiary Filters
-After secondary clarification, the flow travels to the Tertiary Filters for additionalremoval of suspendedsolids and a furtherreduction of thebiochemical oxygendemand (BOD).

Disinfection
-The final process before discharging is disinfection. The WPCP produces its own Sodium Hypochlorite (chlorine) which is used for the disinfection of pathogens before discharging into the Grand River.

Sludge Press
-Sludge from the anaerobic digesters is sent to the belt filter press to be dewatered before being hauled off site for disposal.
-A belt filter press dewaters sludge by mixing it with polymer and pressing it between to perforated belts at high pressure to remove as much water as possible.

Sludge Disposal
-Sludge is disposed of two ways at the WPCP.
-Lake County Landfill – All solids pressed from the City’s Water Plant and portion of the sludge produced at the WPCP is hauled here for disposal.
-The second is sending our solids to the Quasar Energy Group facility in Collinwood for reuse. This facility converts the bio-gas produced into electricity.
