Understanding Foreground and Background Color The Foreground Color and Background Colors are located in the two boxes directly below the Color Palette in PSP 6, as shown in Figure 2.

If the mouse pointer is held over the Color

Palette, it turns to a Dropper tool . If a left mouse click is made, the color directly under the Dropper will become the Foreground Color. If a right mouse click is made, the color directly under the Dropper will become the Background Color.

The Foreground and Background colors are very important in PSP 6 because they determine the color of paint that will be applied when using the various drawing tools. If for instance you were to

select the Paint Brush Tool from the Tool Palette, and hold down the left mouse button and drag across a canvas, you would be instructing PSP 6 to paint using the currently selected Foreground

Color. In Figure 2, this would be black. If you were to select the Paint Brush tool and hold down the right mouse button while dragging across a canvas, you would be instructing PSP 6 to paint in the currently selected background color. In Figure 2, this would be white.

The Foreground-Background Switcher can be clicked once to quickly reverse the foreground and background colors.

    32. Move the mouse pointer over a blue shade in the Color Palette and click the left mouse button.

    33. The Foreground Color changes to the blue color shade you selected.

    34. Move the mouse pointer over a red shade in the Color Palette and click the right mouse button.

    35. The Background Color changes to the red color shade you selected.

    36. Click the Paint Brush tool on the Tool Palette.

    37. Now you must choose your brush options from the Tool Options Window.

    38. Press the O key so the Tool Options Window is visible in the window.

    39. If it appears but is rolled up (showing only as a Title Bar) move the mouse pointer over the Title Bar and click once to open the Tool Options Window.

    40. The Tool Options Window has three tabs for the Paint Brush.

    41. Click the Paint Brush Options tab on the left.

Exercise 2 Opening An Existing Image

Opening an existing image is different from opening a new canvas because a new canvas never existed before. An existing image is one that already resides on the hard drive. To view the image it must be opened first in Paint Shop Pro 6.

    75. Click Open button on the Toolbar.

    76. The Open dialog box appears.

    84. Click Open .

    85. The Push Pin image opens in Paint Shop Pro.

    The Zoom Tool

The Zoom tool allows for focusing in and out of an image, or image area. The Zoom tool is very handy when it is necessary to edit a very small area of an image and a large focus of that area is required to see each individual pixel of paint. It is important to note that zooming does not affect real physical size/measurements of an image; it only affects the viewing of it. The image actually remains untouched.

    86. Click the Zoom tool on the Tool Palette.

    87. Left-click a few times in the middle of the image.

    88. The image should zoom in (larger) in the area being le ft clicked. You can actually start to see the paint pixels of the image as shown in the picture to the right.

    89. The area of the image that is being left clicked with the Zoom tool becomes large. This process is referred to as zooming in.

  • Paint Shop Pro Exercises 1-5 Page 8

Note: Each square in the image shown here is one pixel of paint. Paint pixels are square in nature. Graphics made up of pixels are known as Raster or Bitmap graphics. 90. Right-click several times in the middle of the image.

    91. You should start to see the image area you are clicking shrink. It is almost impossible to see pixels if the image is zoomed out too far.

    92. Press the O key to view the Tool Options Window.

    93. If it appears but is rolled up (showing only as a Title Bar) move the mouse pointer over the Title Bar and click once to open the Tool Options Window.

    96. The Zoom Tool Options Window allows for the picking of an instant zoom ratio.

    97. Click any ratio in the listing to make the zoom take place.

    98. A ratio of 1:1 puts the image back to regular size .

    99. To make an image view at its actual physical size quickly click the Normal View button in the Toolbar.

    100. Close the Pushpin image, but do not close Paint Shop Pro.

Exercise 3 Using The Deformation Tool

    102. The New Image dialog box will open.
