PAINTING SPACE MARINESCODEX INSIGNIAOne of the most effective ways of adhering to the CodexAstartes is with the addition of Codex insignia. This is agreat way to give your Space Marines a sense of placewithin your force. The examples below are Ultramarines, but most Codex Chapters follow the same pattern.

    ADDING CHAPTER SYMBOLS

The simplest way to addcomplex Chapter icons toyour models is to use pre-sculpted shoulder pads.Whether these are the push-fit plastic Ultramarines, theAssault on Black ReachSpace Marines or the metalshoulder pads from the BitzPacks, they make addingiconography a breeze.

The other popular methodof adding Chapter icons toSpace Marines is to usewaterslide transfers ordecals. These transfers areavailable in most SpaceMarine box sets, andinclude icons for all themajor Codex Chapters. Here, Chad Mierzwa showsyou how to apply decals.

Step 4. Use a damp paintbrush toslide the transfer into position on theshoulder pad.

Step 1.Give the shoulder pad a coatof 'Ardcoat to make positioning thedecal easier.

Step 5. Touch a small piece of tissueto the shoulder pad to soak up theexcess moisture.

Step 2. Use a Hobby Knife tocut your chosen transfer fromthe sheet.

Step 6. Again, use a moist paintbrushto smooth out any wrinkles, ensuringthat the transfer sits flat.

There are times when you decide againstusing sculpted pads or transfers, or don'thave access to the ones you need. This ismost likely when your army is more

Step 1. Start with a simple shapeto get the proportions of theChapter icon right.

unusual or you want to add personalisedheraldry. On those occasions, there's oftenno option but to paint the designs by hand.'Eavy Metal's Fil Dunn shows us how.

Step 2. Thicken your initial lines.Try to stick to simple lines, curves and geometric shapes.

    92 WHITE DWARF PAINTING SPACEMARINES

Step 3. Complete the outline ofyour icon. Focus on keeping thesymbol symmetrical.

Step 3. Dip the transfer in coldwater, and leave it submergedfor about 30 seconds.

After a coat of Purity Sealto take the shine of f theshoulder pad, the modelis finished.

Step 4. Block in the icon colour.Use the background colour toneaten the edges if required.

PAINTING SPACE MARINESSHOULDER GUARD VARIANTSMany Space Marines, regardless of rank, bearindividualised iconography on their shoulder guards inplace of Codex insignia. This might represent personalheraldry, badges of honour awarded for valour, ormarkings to represent participation in a famous victory.

COMMANDCommand Squad insigniaoften incorporateselements of its Captain'spersonal heraldry, campaign badges or killmarkings, as well asincluding honour badgesearned in their own right.

TACTICALTactical Squads can alsovary their insignia, incorporating squadnumbers, campaignbadges or devotionallitanies. They oftendisplay variant Tacticalmarkings.

    ~, ] I " r .

Once you've mastered the art of adding basic Codexinsignia to your shoulder pads, you can begin toexperiment with variant shoulder guard designs. You canachieve effective designs by combining several transferdesigns, or you can paint them on free-hand.

ELITESVeteran and TerminatorSquads are the elitewarriors of a Chapter and,as such, have greaterfreedom in choosing theirinsignia. They oftenincorporate honourmarkings such as wreathsand Terminator honours.

DEVASTATORDevastator Squads canincorporate variantmarkings, or even varythe background colour ofthe shoulder guards. Theymight display killmarkings in the form ofskulls or tallies.

Other ChaptersA UR OR A C HA P TE RThe armoury of the Aurora Chapterboasts more Predators and LandRaiders than three other SpaceMarine Chapters combined.Their name has become abyword for armouredassault across the entireUltima Segmentum.

P RA E TO RS O F O RP HEUSThe technological lore of the Praetorsof Orpheus issecond only to that ofthe Adeptus Mechanicus. Manybelieve that the two are tied bY~more than shared service in .the Emperor's name. The '0Praetors of Orpheus arehighly active in systemsneighbouring Pavonis.

ASSAULTAssault Squads have anumber of variantshoulder guard designs, many of whichincorporate skulls andother tokens of death.Quite often this insigniaispresent on their jumppacks too.

T HE M E N TO RSShrouded in mystery, the Mentors areuntrusting of other Chapters, and prefer towork alone and unobserved by allsave their foes. Imperial reCOrdLiJ. .indicate that the Mentors arecurrently engaged against theEldar of Biel-tan Craftworldand the Orks of theCharadon system.

HONOUR MARKINGSSpace Marines are awarded badges of distinction for all manner of heroic deeds, and these offer a great way to individualise models in your army.Though some honours are simply painted onto a SpaceMarine's armour, others are elaborate carvings or badges. Each honour marking is highly regarded by the recipientand his battle brothers. In addition to honour badges, it iscommon practice among Space Marines to inscribe killmarkings onto their weapons. Many believe it is bad lucknot to acknowledge a weapon's achievements.

Iron HaloThe Iron Halo marks out a brilliantleader. I tmay be a physical object, displayed atop a banner or on abackpack, or a painted red badgeincorporated into personalheraldry. When modelled, such asthe example to the lef t, the IronHalo should be painted to standout as a badge of honour. Goldsand silvers are particularly good forthis. When part of heraldry, as onthe previous page, the halo can bepainted freehand in white or red.

Iron SkullThe Iron Skull is an ancient badge, usually demarking a Sergeant. It iseither metallic or red in colour. When sculpted onto a model, thebadge can be painted in metalliccolours to make it stand out. OtherSpace Marines incorporate thesebadges into their heraldry - theSpace Marine transfer sheet foundin most box sets includes a numberof skull icons that are ideal for usein this way.

Imperial LaurelsDeeds of valour leading to victoryare rewarded with the ImperialLaurel. In fact, a Space Marinemay not become a standard beareruntil he has earned his laurels. Some models have actual wreaths, which can be painted with GoblinGreen to represent leaves. Othermodels have laurels painted on,typically in red, white or blue, tostand out from the helmet colour. This can be quickly painted onwith a central brush stroke andsmall strikes for leaves.

ScrollsOne of the most common forms ofheraldry is the addition of a scrollorparchment to the heraldry orarmour, denoting the bearer'sname, squad or acting as someother form of dedication. The scrollcan be painted in the same way asother parchment or stone. Keep thepaint very thin while paintinglettering, to get more control. Usedark brown rather than black for amore natural effect.

94 WHITE DWARF P AIN TIN G S PA CE MA RIN ES

The forms of these markings varies from Chapter toChapter, according to its history and traditions. The badgesshown below are amongst the most common accolades, and see use in almost all Chapters. Where sculpted on tothe miniature, these honours can be painted to looklifelike. In other situations you can represent the badges asstylised icons, painted on or applied using transfers.

Purity SealsPurity Seals are distributed by thecompany Chaplains to convey theEmperor's blessing. Most SpaceMarine miniatures are adornedwith purity seals, and most SpaceMarine frames include one or moreplastic purity seals that can beglued to the models duringassembly. Paint the parchment withBleached Bone followed by a washof Gryphonne Sepia. The seal itselfispainted Mechrite Red andhighlighted with Blood Red.

Marksman's HonourMarksman's Honour badges aresaid to be gold-plated bolter shellcases, fired by Roboute Guilimanhimself! Some miniatures, such asSergeant Telion, feature modelledMarksman's Honour badges. Theseshould be painted gold so that theystand out as more than just spareammunition. You can also paintsuch honour badges on, painting astylised bullet orshell onto thepower armour.

Kill MarkingsThis Brother-Marine has markedthe casing of his boltgun with itsfirst kill markings. As he claimsmore scalps, he will no doubtreplace these markings with amultiple-kill symbol. While asimple line, as shown to the right, denotes a single infantry kill, asymbol such as a skull may beused to denote twenty such kills,or a number may be painted uponthe weapon within a sunburst iconto represent vehicle kills.

The Crux TerminatusThe Crux Terminatus, orTerminator Honour badge, is givento a Space Marine who has beentrained in the use of Terminatorarmour, and has been inductedinto the veteran 1st Company. AllTerminator and Veteran miniaturesfeature a sculpted Crux Terminatusas part of their armour, which canbe painted in metallic orstonycolours. Other models incorporatethe Crux into painted iconography.

SPECIALISTSEvery Space Marine Chapter contains a core of specialistwarriors, each tasked with specific roles within theChapter. These warriors are held in great esteem, and areeither attached to Command Squads or given free reign tocarry out their duties on the battlefield.

Apothecaries bear the caduceus helixupon their right shoulder pads - usuallysculpted on - and wear power armourcoloured completely or partially white.

These specialists are often denoted on the battlefieldby different coloured armour - white for Apothecaries, black for Chaplains, blue for Librarians and red forTechmarines. They are often decorated with ornate armourand all manner of honour badges.

Chaplains are black-clad warriors, adorned with skull motifs and flowingpurity seals. Chaplains are oftencovered in parchment, offering plentyof opportunities to paint script.

As youcan see from the models on this page, the'Eavy Metal painters are no exception, andreally go to town on these powerfulcharacter models.

Because Space Marine commandersare clad in the same uniform colours astheir men, it's the details that really enableyou to make them stand out. Personal HeraldrySpace Marine commanders are given great freedom, and many honours are bestowed upon them in thecenturies in which they serve the Chapter. During thistime, their heraldry changes, becoming more ornateand meaningful, unti l individual heroes can becomerecognised by their heraldic devices.
