Penndian

Novem ber 2019 /Volum e 2/ Issue 2

Hvac Int er v iewNoor : Hi, my name is Noor, and I am a reporter for the

Penndian newsletter. Today I am interviewing Mr. Ford

to learn more about him and HVACR. Welcome Mr.

Ford, how are you doing today?

Mr.Ford: I?m doing good. How are you?

Noor : I?m good. Tell us about your hobbies and

interests.

Mr.Ford: Sure! I have a bunch of different hobbies. I?m

into Brazilian jiu-jitsu, I like fishing, surfing, working

with my hands and just overall different challenges like

camping, hiking, and stuff like that. I like spending time

with my family and doing all those fun things.

Noor : Did you graduate from Pennsauken?

Mr.Ford: I did not graduate from Pennsauken. I

graduated from Delran High School. My favorite classes

were autoshop and home economics.

Special thanks to our District Technology Coach Michele Lockhart and her team for editing the video.

Noor : What made you want to become a teacher?

Mr.Ford: What made me want to become a teacher was to inspire others -

whether it?s through working with your hands, learning to use tools and just

being able to give someone some basic advice somewhere that might send

them down a path that will benefit them later on in life. I had teachers like that

when I was growing up and I hope to do that for others.

Noor : What is the hardest part of your job?

Mr.Ford: The hardest part of my job is trying to integrate technology into a shop

program. There are some shops where their technologies aren?t where they

should be and where they?re at now. For HVACR, Heating Ventilation Air

Conditioning and Refrigeration, a lot of technologies have changed. So, there is

a lot of different areas where you would still use your hands, use different tools,

be able to troubleshoot and fix those troubleshoot items. Most heating and air

conditioners can be run off of wireless thermostats. You can unlock your doors

from your phone. You can turn your heater on and off from your phone. As we

evolve in the industry, there are a lot of the technologies that we need to better

understand because a lot of these kids grow up with the technologies at hand.

As my age, we had to learn the technology. They were just getting integrated

into the schools. Now they?re more available, and it?s the way of future.

Everything is going to be connected at some point. We?re all connected all the

time. The biggest part is just trying to integrate everything.

Noor : What is HVACR and are students generally interested in the class?

Mr.Ford: The students are interested in the class - HVACR, Heating Ventilation

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Whether it?s heating things, the air

conditioning or refrigeration, they?re generally interested in it because they get

to use hand tools. They get to look at different items and see how they work,

what they?re made of and what type of materials. I see a good future here with a

lot of students. The students that I have now seem very generally interested in

getting up and using their hands and that?s a good thing to see.

Page 11: Painting with a Twist - Pennsauken Public Schools...Baldwin 1 Burling 1 Carson 2 Delair 2 Fine 3 Franklin 3 PIM 4 PHS 6-8 PMS 5 Burling School Baldwin October 2019 Pennsauken School

Noor : What skills do students learn in the class?

Mr.Ford: They?re gonna learn about safety. For just about any industry, you go

through different safety aspects of it. Whether it?s safety glasses, safety helmets, vests,

PPE year, how to use a ladder properly - just how to handle tools safely in a safe

manner. They are gonna learn how to use some electrical tools. They?re gonna learn

how to pipe fit. They?re gonna learn how to thread and solder pipe. They?re gonna

learn how to work with different types of fan motors, heating elements, heat

exchangers. There?s a lot that they get to work with. The student are going to do a lot

of technical reading. They will learn how to read a wiring diagram from start to finish.

They will be taught what the symbols mean and how do they work. They also will learn

to troubleshoot. The real-world thinking is: if something breaks at my house, and I

take apart my dryer for example, what?s the reason that it broke, why isn?t it working

and where do I start to look? So, we?re gonna discover how to trust your instincts and

go from different troubleshooting ideas.

Noor : What jobs can students get?

Mr.Ford: Students can get jobs in different types of industries. There?s residential

work for things that break in your house like the air conditioner or your heater.

There?s lots of companies out there that are looking to bring techs in. The HVACR

industry is expected to grow at least 15% in the next couple years, and there?s also the

commercial side of things. For example, when you go to the food store, students can

learn the skills and understand what is it that makes the refrigerators cold,. They can

learn what kind of components are in there. When they get a job, they will continue to

receive training from the companies that they work for. They can work for industry.

They can get into different unions. There?s the private sector, and there?s

manufacturing. There?s a lot of different areas for students to venture out after they

leave high school and be prepared and ready to understand what they need to do out

in the industry.

Noor : Alright, thank you Mr.Ford.

SPORTS CENTER

Amanda Lezcano is recovering from Guillain Barre Syndrome, which she was diagnosed with in early July. Despite her adversities, Amanda is continuously improving and beating all of the odds. An illness that rendered her unable to walk at first hasn?t stopped her. On Saturday, October 26th, Amanda walked from half field (without a walker) to Camden Catholic?s goal and scored. She continues to maintain her positive attitude, surrounded by her family and friends. She has just returned to PHS! Be sure to say hi to her!

Har vest Fest ivalBy Jazcenya Gonzal ez

Pennsauken?s annual Harvest Festival is in the books for 2019, and what a day it was. As summer transitioned to autumn, the festival was an entertaining celebration filled with tons of wonderful Fall activities. From the pumpkin field where the pumpkins were swiftly picked, to the Fire Department?s Chili Cook-off, to the super fun bounce houses, and everything in between, no one left without having a blast. Pony rides, sand and balloon art, and pumpkin painting filled our Pennsauken children with enjoyment. Adults had just as much fun gathering items from vendors and boarding the hayride. Overall, Pennsauken?s Harvest Festival gave our community another year of exciting events to enter the cooler seasons. Special thanks to those PHS students who volunteered their time for this event!
