What Pak istan MeansPakistan means land of the pure. The name was alsochosen because the letters stand for places in Pakistan. The P stands for Punjab, the S for Sindh, the Kfor Kashmir, and the tan comes from the provinceof Balochistan.

K2The second tallest mountain in the world is in the Northern

Areas region of Pakistan. The name of the mountain is K2.Some people call it Mount Godwin Austen after a Britishman who explored it in the 1860s.

K2 is in the Karakoram mountain range. The Karakoram ranis the second highest range in the world. So K2 is the seconhighest mountain in the second highest range. (The highestrange is the Himalayas, and the highest mountain is Everest

But K2 is not the second most dangerous mountain to climbIt is the first. More than one-fourth of the people who havetried to climb it have died trying.

Blind River DolphinThe Indus River is located in Pakistan and India. The blind Indus dolphin is an unusualanimal that lives in the river.

Like bats, blind Indus dolphins move around with the help ofecholocation. The dolphinmakes clicking noises. The clicks hit objects in the water and their echoes bounce backThe dolphins can tell how far away and how big the objects are by the echoes.

The dolphin swims on its side with one flipper in the water. This helps it explore itssurroundings and find food.

The Beginning of PakistanBritain took control of the area that is now India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh in 1849.Hindus liked the British ways of life. Many Muslims did not. The Muslims began to wantcountry of their own.

India gained independence from Britain in 1947. Pakistan, which had been part of Indiabecame a Muslim nation in two parts. One part was west of India and the other, EastPakistan, was on the east. In the early 1970s, East Pakistan became Bangladesh.

The Indus Valley CivilizationArchaeologists are scientists who find, dig up, and studyitems used by people in the past. Archaeologists working

in Pakistan discovered dozens of cities where no onelived anymore. The cities were part of the IndusValley Civilization.

The Indus Valley people lived hundreds ofyears before Christ was born. They built finecities and traded goods with other people.Archaeologists found paved roads andmulti-story houses in the cities ruins.

The homes had indoor bathrooms. The people created sculptures and pottery, and they had a writing system. In someways, they seemed to be better off than many of the poor people in Pakistan today.

No one knows why the Indus ValleyCivilization ended. Many other groupsconquered and ruled the area afterthe Indus Valley people no longercontrolled it.

    Pak istan History TimelineAbout 2600 B.C. to 1700 B.C.

The Indus Valley Civilization thrived. Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa were two ofthe main cities.

About 1700 B.C.Aryan invaders came from Central Asia. Many historians believe the Aryansbrought the caste system with them. A caste is a social class based on whatfamily someone is born into. The people in higher castes are thought to bebetter than those in lower castes. Hindu religious leaders taught people the falseidea that they could come back to life in another body and a better caste afterthey died. (Hinduism is a religion that teaches there are many gods.)

700s A.D.Islam came to the region.

1849 to the mid-1900sThe British controlled the areathat is Pakistan today.

    1947Pakistan became an

    independent country.

    1971East Pakistan becameBangladesh.

    The Taliban and Al-Qaida

    9/11

On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked two locations inthe United States. The 19 terrorists hijacked four planes fullof passengers and crashed two of them into New YorksWorld Trade Center buildings on purpose. They crashed athird plane into the Pentagonthe headquarters of the U.S.military in Washington, D.C. A fourth hijacked plane crashedon the ground in Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people died inthe attacks.

Al-QaidaA terrorist group called al-Qaida carried outthe attacks. Their leader was Osama binLaden. It is believed that al-Qaida thoughtthey were following the teachings of strictIslam by attacking America. But even manyMuslims around the world did not agreewith their violent ways.

The TalibanTaliban means students in Arabic. The Taliban is a group of radical Muslims whoruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. Under Taliban rules, women were not treated weThe radicals did not want girls to go to school or women to leave their homes. They alsbanned many kinds of sports, music, and games for both boys and girls. The citizens oAfghanistan had few freedoms when the Taliban was in charge.

Taliban DefeatedThe Taliban also helped al-Qaida by protecting al-Qaida terrorists from getting caught

after they committed crimes. After 9/11 the United States led attacks on Afghanistan toend the Talibans rule there. Some of the Taliban died, and some ended up in prison.Others fled to Pakistan. Many had come from Pakistan in the first place. They had beeneducated in Pakistans madrassasstrict Muslim schools. (Read more about madrassasthe Religion and Persecution Facts section.)

Some Taliban stayed in Afghanistan. A Christian who visited Afghanistan said, TheTaliban havent left. They just shaved their beards and took off their black turbans. They are still there, and they still hate followers of Christ. (The Taliban required men

    to grow beards.)

Unstable GroupsThousands of Taliban and al-Qaida members settled in the Federally Administered TribalAreas territory near the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. They set up bases to planattacks on Americans in Afghanistan. They also began forcing their ways on the peoplearound them. We build a school in six months; they burn it down in six minutes, oneAfghan official said of the Taliban.

Today, the Taliban, al-Qaida, and other violent groups linked with them also carry outattacks on people, schools, and Pakistan army soldiers in northwest Pakistan and otherareas. They threaten to make the country very unstable. Many people in Pakistan arevery poor. It is feared that poor youth will be easy targets for radical groups to recruitnto becoming terrorists.

The radical Muslim groups in Pakistan areagainst Christians and others who dont follow

their kind of strict Islam. Pastor Robert is theleader of a church in Pakistan. His church is inan area where the Taliban has influence. Hehas shared the gospel with Muslims who havedecided to follow Jesus.

The pastor found a letter in his mailbox. Theletter said, We are watching you. It went onto say that the pastor must stop leadingMuslims to Christ. If he did not, the radicalspromised that they would hurt all your family

members, smallest and eldest. Pastor Robert and his wife have five children.

One day the radicals put a bag full of torn-up Quran pages near Pastor Robertshouse. They hoped he would be blamed for tearing up a Quran and would bepunished. (See Persecution in the Religion and Persecution Facts section.)

Please pray for the pastor and his family. He continues to lead Muslims to Christ.

The church in Pakistan is continuing to grow.

ReligionThe population of Pakistan is mostly Muslim. By law, the president of the country mustbe a Muslim.

PersecutionMany Muslims in Pakistan get along with Christians. But Christians are harshlypersecuted by other Muslims who are radical about their faith. Christian children aresometimes treated unfairly in school, and Christian adults often have a hard time gettingood jobs. Many Christian children and youth have to work at difficult jobs to helpsupport their families.

Muslims who decide to follow Jesus often face the worst persecution. Even their familietreat them badly.

Pakistans laws say that no one may say anythingagainst Islam or the founder of Islam, Muhammad. It is against the law to damage the Muslim holybook, the Quran. Even Christians who do not dothese things are sometimes falsely blamed forthem. If they are found guilty, they are severelypunished. If the courts find them innocent, angry

    Muslims may hurt them anyway.

Blasphemy LawsBlasphemy means a word or deedused to dishonor something holy.Muslims believe that the Quran,Muhammad, and Islam are holy.

Law 295c is the most well-knownof Pakistans blasphemy laws. Itsays that anyone who blasphemesMuhammad can be put to death. If Christians say that Muhammadhad faults, they could be charged

    M a s i hMasih is a common last

name for PakistaniChristians. New Christianssometimes change their

names to Masih. Masihmeans Messiah. It isused to honor Jesus.

P uni s h ed f o r N o t hi ngYousuf Masih, like many Pakistanis, couldnot read. He worked as a janitor. One day,

he burned some trash for his employer.Yousuf did not know that the trash included

    some verses of the Quran.

Yousuf was arrested for blasphemy. Laterthe police dropped the charges and let himgo. In anger, Muslim mobs burned threechurches and other Christian buildings.

with blasphemy. If someone said, It is not good for a man to have more than one wife,he or she could be arrested. Muhammad had several wives and he taught that Muslimscan have up to four wives. So saying that it is wrong to have many wives could beconsidered as saying something bad about Muhammad.

Other parts of the blasphemy laws make it against the law to trespass in cemeteries ordisturb a religious meeting.

Struggles in the North-West Frontier ProvinceRadical Muslims warned girls at some schools in Pakistans North-West Frontier Province(NWFP) to wear burqas. Burqas are hot, tent-like, head-to-toe coverings worn by strictMuslim women and girls. The Muslims said the schools would be bombed if the girls

    did not obey.

Even Christian girls were told to wear theburqas. Many just quit school instead. Some of the schools closed to avoidgetting bombed.

The radical Muslims in the NWFP wouldreally rather girls not even go to school.

They think women and girls should staynside their houses whenever possible.

KidnappingSaba and Aneela Masihs parents were sad. Saba, 13, and Aneela, 10, had beenkidnapped. The Muslims kidnappers claimed that the girls ran away to become Muslims. The girls Christian parents did not believe the kidnappers.

But officials would not give the girls back to their parents. Judges and other officials inPakistan are often scared that radical Muslims might hurt them if the Muslims do not gettheir way. So sometimes they do not punish Muslims for their crimes.

No fear of punishment makes Christians in Pakistan easy targets for Muslim kidnappers. Some Christian girls are kidnapped and forced to marry Muslim men. Christian boys arekidnapped and used as slaves.

One kind of burqa wornin Pakistan is sometimes

called the shuttlecock burqa. The burqa looks somewhat

like the shuttlecock, or birdie, used in badminton games.Badminton is a popular

    sport in Pakistan.

SchoolMuslim students in Pakistan must take classes that teach them about Islam. By law,Christian students do not have to learn about Islam. But teachers in public schools mak

many non-Muslims take the classes anyway.

In many public schools, most of thestudents are Muslim. Christians inthese schools are often forced toeat at separate tables. At oneschool, a Muslim teacher forced aChristian girl to stand in the hotsun until she fainted. The girl was

being punished for wearing a crossnecklace to school.

Christian parents can sendtheir children to privateChristian schools if theywant to. But Christianswho are poor are not ableto pay for private schools.

Thousands of Muslimschools called madrassasteach even more aboutIslam. The governmenthas encouraged the schoolsto also teach math, science, and other subjects, and to quitteaching strict, radical Islam.

But not all the madrassas are cooperating.

houses similar to many homes in the U.S. Butmany Pakistani homes, especially those invillages or on farms, are small rectangles madeof mud and stone.

Small village homes have flat roofs. They mayhave wooden doors. To keep the house coolern the hot summer, the houses may havewooden shutters or no windows at all. Insidethe house, there is little furniture. Families maysleep on the floor.

Bonded LaborMany Christians in Pakistan find it hard to goto school and get good jobs. Bonded labor isone reason some find it hard.

Poor Christian families have only enoughmoney to live from day to day. If someonegets sick, the family does not have themoney for doctors and medicine. If a youngman or woman wants to get married, theremay not be enough money for clothes or awedding ceremony.

So the family borrows money. To pay backtheir debt, they go to work for a factory, brickkiln, or other business. But they are often notpaid enough to feed their families and pay offthe debt, too. Sometimes the bosses find newways to add to their debt, likecharging them for tools. Theybecome slaves to their bosses.

Such workers are called bondedlaborers. Even children of thedebtor often have to work to helppay back the never-ending debt.

    Ethnic Groups in Pakistan

Ethnic GroupAn ethnic group, people group, or tribe is a large group of people who have thingsimportant to them in common. The important things might include a common history, ancestors, traditions, customs, language, and area where they live or came from.

J os hua : A Bonded Labo r e rJoshua Masih, a Christian boy in Pakistan, was a good student. He was learning to

be a tailor. He had hopes for a future with

    a good job.

Joshuas father worked at a brick kiln. The job was hot, hard work. He was glad

his son would grow up to have a better life

Joshuas father borrowed $350 from thebrick kiln owner for Joshuas sisters wedding

Then he got hurt. He was crippled andcould not work.

The brick kiln owner ordered Joshua topay the debt. Joshua, his mother, and his

sister all had to go to work at the kiln. If noone helps them, they will probably work ther

for the rest of their lives and never pay offthe debt.

Small Eid and Big EidTwo of the Muslim holidays celebrated inPakistan are called Big Eid and Small Eid.

Big EidGenesis 22 shows that God told Abraham tosacrifice his son Isaac. Yet Muslims believe thatAllah told Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael, but spared him when Abraham started to obey.

During Big Eid, Muslims remember the story of Abrahams willingness to sacrifice his soPakistanis may sacrifice a goat for the occasion. Children sometimes name anddecorate the goat before it is killed and treat it as a pet. Emotional outbursts wereseen on the day of their sacrifice, said one reporter telling how children reacted tothe sacrifice of their pets.

Muslims can now go on the Internet to place an order for an animal to sacrifice. But many poor Pakistanis can no longer afford a goat. The price is too high.

Ask God to help Muslims know that Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for their sins.

Other parts of the Big Eid celebration include giving to the needy and buying newclothes. Pakistani Muslims also like to spend time with family members on the holiday.

Small EidSmall Eid celebrates the end of the Muslim month of Ramadan. Friends and familiesexchange gifts, decorate their houses, wear new clothes, and eat special food.

    Entertainment and Games

TVPakistanis enjoy watching TV just as families in other countries do. However, manyhomes do not have TVs, and many do not even have electricity. There are 105 TVs inPakistan for every 1,000 people. The U.S. has 844 TVs for every 1,000 people.(Source: The World Almanac and Book of Facts)

RamadanRamadan is a month on the Muslim

calendar. During Ramadan, Muslims do noeat or drink from sunrise to sunset. They

say special memorized prayers and mayread the Quran from start to finish.

After sunset, Muslims break their fast witha feast. They may eat a large meal duringthe night and get up before sunrise to eatagain. TV networks often broadcast new

    shows during Ramadan.

CricketCricket is a little like baseball. The bat looks somewhat like a boat oar. The ball is ashard as a baseball, but the fielders do not wear gloves to catch it. Players usually wear

    all-white clothing.

The wicket, which is like baseballs home plate, is made of three tall, vertical sticks(stumps) and two sticks called bails on top of the stumps. The bowler (pitcher)tries to throw the ball so that it will hit the stumps and knockthe bails off before the batsman (batter) hits it.

Wickets are at both ends of the field. Abatsman stands in front of each one. Runs

are scored when a batsman hits a ballthrown by the bowler, and the two batsmenrun and change places. Unlike in baseball, after the bowler throws the ball, it may hitthe ground and bounce up to the batsmanbefore it is hit.

SquashJahangir Khan and Jansher Khan are past

world champions from Pakistan. They wereboth number one in squash.

Squash is a sport played with racquets on acourt surrounded by walls. Players take turnshitting the ball against the front wall. Theball may hit the other walls before hittingthe front wall.

Squash is like racquetball, but the court issmaller and the rules are a bit different.

Gulli-DundaKids in Pakistan enjoy kite flying and soccer. Marbles and field hockey are also popular.A traditional way to have fun is a game called gulli-dunda.

Using a long stick, a player hits the end of a small stick placed on the ground, flipping into the air. When the smaller stick flies up, the player tries to hit it as far away as he cwith the long stick.

Oonch Neech, a Traditional Pakistan i GameOonch neech is a kind of tag. One person is It. The other players try to keep frombeing tagged by It.

Anything above ground level is a safe area. Players cannot be tagged if they arestanding on a porch, big rock, or other safe place. Anything at ground level or below isnot safe.

If a player is tagged in an unsafe area, he or she is then It. If you want to try oonchneech, you may want to make a rule that says no player can stay in a safe area for mothan ten seconds. Or you can make the playing area smaller if it is taking a long time fanyone to get tagged. You might also want to designate some places above ground thaare off limits because they are really not safe!

Try it yourselfInstead of two sticks, you can use a balloon and a yardstick. Place the balloonon the floor, and tap it with a yardstick. Experiment with different ways oftapping it to get it to fly off the ground. When it rises, see how far you can hit

    it with the yardstick.

Variation: Use a ping pong paddle and aballoon, ping pong ball, or plastic golf ball.Start with the balloon or ball resting on the

paddle instead of on the ground.

Baraf PaniBaraf Pani is like freeze tag, a traditional game played in manycountries. Play in an open space inside or outside. Start withtwo teams with the same number of players on each team.

One team is the chasers, and the other team is chased.

When a chaser tags someone on the other team, the taggedperson turns into baraf (ice) and must stand in a designatedarea at one edge of the playing space. If another member ofthe chased team can touch someone in the baraf area withoutgetting tagged himself, the baraf person becomespani (water) and can leave the baraf area to play again.

When everyone on the chased team is frozen into ice, theteams switch. The chasers become the chased. If thechasers have difficulty tagging everyone, make the playingarea smaller.

    (Ephesians 6:13, NIV).

The AssemblyThe teachers at a public school in Pakistan called all the students to a special assembly. At the assembly, a teacher announced to the entire school that the Injil has beenchanged and is now false. Injil is the name that Muslims call the New Testament of theChristian Bible.

    The Muslims Problem

The teachings in the Quran do not agree with the teachings in the Bible. However, theQuran speaks highly of the Injil (New Testament), which was written hundreds of yearsbefore the Quran.

So Muslims have a problem. The Quran says the Bible is good, but the Bible does notagree with the Quran. For example, the Bible says Jesus is the Son of God who offerssalvation from sin to those who believe in Him and follow Him. The Quran says Jesus isnot the Son of God and that people are saved by doing good deeds.

Muslims solve the problem by saying that the first Bibles were true. But they say theBible has been changed and is now not true. They do not know, or do not understand, that early copies of the Bible have been found. The early books prove that there havebeen few changes in the Bible over the years. The message is the same in the earlybooks and in the Bible today.

    Standing Alone

A Christian boy at the school assembly heard what the teacher

said about the Bible. He stood up among all the Muslimstudents and Muslim teachers. He said boldly, The Bible hasnot changed. But whoever reads it is changed.

Radical Muslim students screamed at the Christian boy. He willnot have an easy time at school in the future. But he continuesto stand firm in his faith in Christ.

Comparing Basic Beliefs in Christianity and Islam

    Islam Christianity

    One God

Muslims worship Allah, who theybelieve created the world. Theybelieve there are no gods otherthan Allah.

Jesus taught, The Lord our God is oneLord. God the Father, Jesus, and theHoly Spirit are One. (See Mark 12:29,John 10:30, and John 14:16, 17.)

    Holy Book

Muslims believe their holy book, theQuran, was dictated to the Muslimprophet Muhammad by an angelfrom Allah.

Christians believe the Bible is the Wordof God. It is the unfolding story of Godrelationship to man and His plan to savmen from sin.

    What is Godlike?

Muslims believe that Allah is notknowable. He is not a father tohumans. The Quran does not say

Allah seeks to redeem those lost insin or that he loves those who donot love him first.

God is a loving heavenly Father. Humancan have a relationship with Him. Welove Him because He first loved us, evewhile we were sinners. He sent Jesus tosave us. (See Luke 19:10, Romans 5:8,2 Corinthians 6:18, and 1 John 4:19.)

    Who is Jesus?

Muslims believe Jesus was aprophet, but no more than a man. They believe that He did not dieon the cross and did not rise fromthe dead.

God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are OneJesus is called the Son of God. He dieand rose again. He is the way, the trutand the life, and no one comes to Godthe Father except through Him. God seHim to save the world from sin. (SeeJohn 14:6 and John 3:16.)

    Salvation

Muslims believe Allah will judgeeveryone on Judgment Day. If theyhave enough good deeds, they willgo to paradise.

Christians believe that humans are notrighteous enough to save themselvesthrough good works. All fall short ofGods glory. God sent Jesus to redeemthe lost from sin, so that those whobelieve in Him may have eternal life.(See Romans 3:22-25.)

Pa r veenI am 13 years old and I live in Pakistan. My nameis Parveen.

My father believes in Jesus. But when I was a year old, mymother left my father, became a Muslim, and married a Muslimman. My father is remarried, and now I have a stepmother.

I go to a Christian boarding school in another city. In theevenings, a pastors wife prays with us. She told us that Jesussacrificed for us because He loves us. I started studying theBible every day. After I decided to follow Christ and got

    baptized, I was very happy.

TrickedLast summer, I went home for a visit. One day, I was walking along the road to go to grandmothers house. A car stopped near me. Some girls in the car asked, Can youhelp us find our cousins house?

I helped them and they gave me two apples. I ate the apples. The girls said they woudrop me off on the road to my house. I got in the car, but I was feeling sick. Then I

    passed out.

[The girls must have put drugs in the apples. When Parveen became conscious again, she was in a strange house. She was wearing different clothes and her hair hadbeen cut.]

Praying for FreedomAfter a while, one of the girls who gave me the apples came in. Its good that you arenow a Muslim, she said. We are very happy!

What are you saying? I asked. I am not a Muslim!

The girls mother came in and said, Now that you are a Muslim, you can have a new and marry my son! She brought her son to me. He was 35 years old. I could see hewas not a good man. I prayed that God would release me from these people.

The Muslims invited people to their house for a marriage party for the womans son andme. My uncle came through their open gate and called, Parveen, where are you? Hefound me and took me with him. I was free!

I went back to my fathers home. I am very thankful to God who saved me from theMuslims hands. I remember this verse from Psalm 34, I sought the Lord, and He heardme and delivered me from all my fears.

S o b i aWhen I was 6 years old, my father put me in the publicschool. Many Muslim students went to school there.

Some girls invited me to become a Muslim when I was in

the sixth grade. They told me what Muslims believe, but Ididnt think any of it was true. You must accept Islam, they said.

Then they told the teacher about me. He called me to the front of the class and beat myhands with a stick. It didnt hurt, and I was smiling. The teacher said, Dont you feelany pain? I said, No. Then he beat me again. It hurt and I cried.

When the teacher was not around, one of the Muslim girls again came to talk to me.

Once again she tried to convince me to become a Muslim. But I would not.

My eighth grade class had two Christian students and 41 Muslims. My teacher asked me,Why dont you read the Quran? I said, I am a Christian.

He asked, You dont believe in the Prophet Muhammad?

I answered, No. Please dont talk to me about Islam anymore. After that he nevertalked to me again about his religion.

I love Jesus with all my heart.

AneesaMuslims forced my brother and sister to follow Islam. They tried to force me, but Irefused. The Muslims kill people. Christians love each other. Thats why I accepted JesusChrist as my Savior.

Family members tried to convince me to change my mind about

my faith. They locked me in my room without food for one day.But I would not deny Jesus. My family wanted to protect me.They sent me to another town where Christians are now takingcare of me.

I want to encourage people to give their life to Christ. If they are still away from Himand living a sinful life, I encourage them to follow Jesus Christ and His teachings.

I am not afraid of death. I have no fear of being killed by fanatic Muslims. We all haveto die anyway. So why not die in the way of Christ?

Yasmeen prayed for Aslam. She encouraged him tofollow Christ. After Pamila, Basharat, and Nabila wereborn, Yasmeen taught them about Jesus, too.

Poor ChoicesWithout Jesus in his life to guide him, Aslam chosefriends who were not good examples. Some of hisfriends were Muslims who did not like Christians. Hedid not allow Yasmeen to go to church or to have

devotions at home. After a while, Aslam decided tobecome a Muslim.

Muslims are allowed to have more than one wife. Usually, the wives do not want theirhusbands to marry other wives. Muhammad was the person who started Islam, andeven his many wives did not get along with each other. But Muslims in some countriescontinue the custom, even though it does not work well.

Aslam married a second wife named Hameeda. Aslam and Hameeda tried to force

Yasmeen to become a Muslim. They even hit her with sticks.

Esther Bibi, a Pakistani Christian, told the followingstory about her life.

My family and I work at a brick kiln making bricks. Welive in a colony of brick kiln workers. All the familieslive in small brick huts near the kiln. We cook outsidein the courtyard.

About two-thirds of the families are Muslim and therest are Christian. Brick kiln workers have a hard life.

I am the oldest of six children. My parents are verypoor. For many years they worked 14 hours a day sowe could go to school. When I was in the sixth grade,I got sick. My fathers daily routine while I was sick was to pray for me the whole night. He encouraged me with his prayers. Praise the Lord, I was healed! This taught me topray for sick people.

After I finished 10th grade, I started a house church for 10 Christian families from thebrick kiln colony. A pastor came to teach from the Bible, and I taught Sunday school.

Muslims began to attend. They were interested in learning about the miracles of Jesusand the stories of people from the Bible.

The brick kiln owner warned me four times to stop holding meetings and to stopteaching Muslims. I told him I did not force the Muslims at attend. Their parents knewthat the children were Sunday school students. They take interest because I teachabout the God who was, and is, and will live forever.

One day the brick kiln owner came to my class and ordered the Muslim students to get

out of my house. He slapped my face, then grabbed my Bible out of my hand and threwit on a couch. He said, I have told you many times to stop the prayer meetings! TheMuslim students stopped him from beating me.

I did not stop teaching. The owner continued to persecute me. He attacked me violentlyanother time.

I have forgiven the brick kiln owner because I follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Myfavorite verse is Luke 22:34, which says, Father, forgive them, for they do not knowwhat they are doing.

I have not lost hope after the persecution. I am stronger than I was before it. Thestories in the Book of Acts strengthen my faith. Persecution is part of Christian life. Imust set a good example for other believers.

A c t i v i t y : M a k e a B r i c kMany Christians in Pakistan have to work at brick kilns because better jobs often go toMuslim workers. A Christian woman who worked in a brick kiln explained more aboutwhat life is like for brick kiln workers.

My family is uneducated and poor. I never went to school. I have been working at thebrick kiln my whole life. I never played with toys because I was busy making bricks thewhole day. In my free time, I took care of my younger brothers and sisters.

I made the first brick that I made by myself when I was 10. I was very happy that Ilearned the art of making bricks to earn some money. I knew that my little income counot feed my family. But I could support them a little bit with what I made.

At that time a brick kiln worker earned 40 cents for making 1,000 bricks. Today theyearn $5 for 1,000 bricks.

You can make a brick by m ixing 2 cups ofstraw (or dried grass), 4 quarts of dirt, and6 cups of water. Line a shoebox w ith plastic, such as a trash bag. Tape the plastic to theoutside of the box to secure it. Pour some

of the dirt mix ture into the box. Let it dry inthe sun for about tw o days. Take it out

of the box and turn it over so thebottom can dry.

Muslims in Pakistan have a hard time learning the truthabout Jesus. Their Muslim friends and family cannot tell

them about Jesus because they do not know the truth either.

So Christians in Pakistan put ads in the newspaper. The adsoffer free Bible classes by mail. Anyone who wants to take aclass clips a coupon out of the newspaper and sends it in.Soon a Bible lesson arrives in the mail. The student readsthe lessons, takes a test, sends his test answers back, andreceives another lesson. Students can keep their lessons asecret.

Good and Bad LessonsRafiq, a Muslim youth in Pakistan, took a Bible class by mailto learn more about Jesus. The stories of Jesus were in his head, but not yet inhis heart.

Rafiq showed his Bible lessons to a Muslim scholar. (A scholar is someone who haslearned a great deal.) The scholar told Rafiq, Dont read those things. They are notgood.

Rafiq quit taking the Bible class. He continued to followthe teachings of Islam. Later he joined Muslim trainingcamps to learn how to be a Muslim terrorist.

Rafiq talked about life in one camp. Early in the morning there were physical exercises. After breakfast, we had classes. They taught us about Muslim leaders.

Then we learned how to make bombs and other weapons. They taught us how to

destroy trains and hijack airplanes. We learned bank robbery and how to disrupt traffic.I learned everything, but I was against killing people. This was always on my mind.

ChangedOther men in my terrorist gang killed a Christian man, Rafiq continued. This was theturning point of my life.

Rafiq wondered about the Christian man who was now in heaven with Jesus. He begalooking for Christians who could teach him about their faith.

A Christian helped Rafiq find the truth, and he decided to follow Christ! Now the storieof Jesus were in his heart. He wanted everyone to hear the Good News that he hadfound. He began to take Bibles to Muslim schools, mosques, and villages. I waschanged, said Rafiq. So other people can be changed, too.

Not AfraidRafiq paid a price for his boldness. Terrorists and Muslim leaders called him on thephone. They threatened to harm him if he did not stop handing out Bibles.

Now I have come to know what faith is, said Rafiq. I am not afraid of death.

Rebekha was angry. Her teacher expected her to sit by anew girl in her ninth grade class in Pakistan. The new girlwas a Christian. Rebekha hated Christians! She chose tosit on the floor rather than sit by Mary, the new girl.

Rebekha then had to miss school because she was sick. She needed help studying for a test. None of the otherMuslim girls would help her study. Mary offered to help, and Rebekha began to like Christians a little more.

A Bad AttitudeSome Christians started a sewing class in Rebekhas

village, and Mary invited Rebekha to attend. Rebekhawent to the class. But she sat separately from theChristian girls. She still did not like Christians very well.

The Christian girls were sad about Rebekhas bad attitude. They spent much time inprayer for her.

Rebekha realized that she could find nothing wrong with the Christian girls. After twomonths, she asked Mary for a Bible. Mary happily gave her one. Mary asked God to heRebekha understand the Bible and follow Christ.

Turning the Other CheekMarys prayers were answered! Rebekha not only quit hating Christians, she becameone!

Rebekha was happy, but her family was miserable. They tried to get her to return toIslam. Her uncle even slapped her face. Rebekha turned her face so he could slap theother side, too. She explained that the Bible says if someone slaps your face, you shou

turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39).

HonorHonor is very important in many Muslim countries. A man receives honor if others in hculture respect him. He loses honor if members of his family do not follow the customsof those around him.

Some Muslims in Pakistan believe they will lose honor if someone in their familybecomes a Christian. That is what Rebekhas uncles believed.

The Evil P lanRebekhas uncles took her to a canal near their farmland. They took a gun with them. They planned to shoot Rebekha and throw her in the canal.

Rebekha prayed to God for help. Then, as they reached the canalbank, they saw a big, black poisonous cobra in the canal.

The men decided to throw Rebekha into the canal instead ofshooting her. The snake would bite her, and they would not bearrested for shooting her.

SparedRebekhas uncles pushed her into the canal and rushed away. Rebekha did not know

how to swim. She continued to pray for help and soon found herself safely on the bank. The snake had disappeared.

Rebekha returned home soaking wet. Her family was astonished. Her father said shecould no longer live there since she had become a Christian. She left home, and Maryhelped her find Christians who would take care of her. Rebekha was grateful to God forsparing her life.

Of course, she answered. But she did not believe he could tell her.

The man invited Tara to church.

The Christian God is RealTara told her family she needed to visit the church for her class. They insisted that shemake an official request from the local police to visit the church. When she finally got

permission to go to the church, 12 security guards and her older brother went alongwith her. Tara wondered if the Christians were dangerous.

During the church service, the Christians prayed for a sick girl. The girl was healed! The Christian God must be real, thought Tara. How else would He hear them whenthey prayed?

In TroubleWhen Tara and her family returned to Pakistan, she secretly began studying the Bibleagain. This time she searched Gods word to find the truth, not to complete a class.

Tara needed someone to guide her. She found a church and began asking the pastorquestions.

The pastor was scared. He knew radical Muslims would hurt him if they caught himteaching a Muslim about Jesus. So he told Taras father that she had been visiting thechurch and asking questions.

Taras father was very upset. He yelled and screamed at her. Tara was shocked. Her

father had never treated her so harshly. She ran to her room and sought comfort in thwords of her Bible.

Soon her father came to her room to apologize for his behavior. When he found herreading the Bible, he grew even angrier than before. For the first time in Taras life, heslapped her.

A New LifeTaras family continued to persecute her for seeking the truth. Finally she knew she hato leave home for her own safety. For the next few years, she moved from place to

place while her relatives pursued her. During that time, she became a follower of Chris

After a while, Tara escaped Pakistan to live in another country. She married a Christianand they started a family. But she is not out of danger, as Muslims still want to harm he

A c t i vi t y: Tr ansp o r ta t i on i n Paki s tanTara used many forms of transportation when she traveledfrom place to place. Sometimes she traveled by airplane.

But many Pakistanis are too poor to fly in planes. Theyoften travel from city to city by bus. On shorter trips, theygo by car, van, or motorcycle. Some Pakistanis travel on

bicycles, in donkey or horse carts, or in three-wheeled taxis.

Some buses and trucks in Pakistan are painted in bright colors. They are covered fromtop to bottom with flowers, designs, lights, tinsel, and beads. Artists in the marketmake a living decorating the vehicles. The owners of buses believe more people willwant to ride their bus if it is pretty. Some people even ride on the roofs of buses in bigluggage racks.

Make a BusYou can make a Pakistani bus or truck out of a tissue box or shoe box.

    1. Remove the cover of the box and turn it upside down.

    2. Cut off the end of the box that will be the front of the bus. Save the piece that youcut off.

    3. Cut back about one-third the length of the top of the box along both edges of thetop. Fold the flap that you cut into a windshield and hood.

    4. Cut away the sides until they are the same height and width as the hood.

    5. Secure the hood to the sides with tape. Use a piece of the front that you cut off tomake the part where the headlights go. Tape it to the bus.

    6. Cover the bus with colorful paper, or decorateit with paint, crayons, or markers.

    7. Glue or tape white paper to the bus tomake a windshield, windows, and doors.

    8. Cut out cardboard wheels, and glue ortape them on.

    9. Glue on bells, beads, or other decorations.
