If the distribution ends first, the "Glory be to the Father": is sung atonce, followed by the Antiphon.

The Reading of the Gospel

When the distribution is finished, and the table removed, theCelebrant washes his hands in silence; he then goes up to the altar, kisses it in the middle, and puts incense in the thurible in the usualmanner. The Deacon takes the book of the Gospels and places it onthe Altar, and all is done as for the singing of the Gospel at HighMass.

[The Priest who celebrates alone, follows the customary rules forSung Mass.]

The Holy Gospel is written in the twenty-first chapterof the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, beginning

at the first verse.

People: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

T that time: When they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Béth-pha-gé, unto the Mount of

Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, saying untothem, Go into the village over against you, andstraightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt withher: loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any

man say aught unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hathneed of them; and straightway he will send them. Allthis was done, that it might be fulfilled which wasspoken by the Prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter ofSion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, andsitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. Andthe disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them;and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on themtheir clothes, and they set him thereon. And a verygreat multitude spread their garments in the way;

others cut down branches from the trees, and strawedthem in the way. And the multitudes that wentbefore, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna tothe Son of David; Blessed is he that cometh in theName of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

People: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

The Procession of Palms

The Celebrant then puts incense in the thurible in the customarymanner, and the Deacon turns to the people and sings:

Deacon: Let us go forth in peace.

People: In the Name of Christ. Amen.

The Procession then takes place. The Thurifer goes first, withsmoking thurible, and after him a second Subdeacon in tunicle, oran Acolyte, carrying the cross (unveiled), between two Servers, carrying lighted candles. The rest of the Clergy follow in order, and lastly the Celebrant and Ministers, followed by the people, bearing the blessed branches.

The procession goes, if possible, outside the church, following anextended route. If there should be another church in which theBlessing of Palms can take place, there is no reason why it should

not be done there, the procession then being made to the principalchurch for the Mass.

As the procession sets out, some or all of the following antiphonsmay be sung, according to opportunity.

I

Occurrunt turbae. The multitudes with flowers andbranches go forth to meet their Redeemer: and renderworthy homage to the triumphant conquerer: theGentiles with their lips proclaim the Son of God: and

in the praise of Christ their voices thunder through thesky: "Hosanna in the highest".II

Cum angelis. With the Angels and the children may webe found faithful, crying unto the vanquisher of death:"Hosanna in the highest".

III

Name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest".IV

abide his frost? He sendeth out his word and melteth them: he

bloweth with his wind and the waters flow.He showeth his word unto Jacob: his statutes and

At the end of the Epistle, a bare lectern is placed on the pavementof the choir on the Gospel side; and the singing of the Passionfollows in this fashion:

It is sung or read by Ministers at least in Deacon’s orders,

accompanied by two Acolytes without lights or incense. Theyapproach the Altar and kneel upon the lowest step. Deeply bowingthey recite Cleanse, O Lord in a low voice, and ask a blessing fromthe Celebrant, saying Bless, reverend father.  The Celebrant turnsto them and says in a moderate voice:

The Lord be in your hearts and on your lips, that youmay worthily and fitly proclaim his Gospel: In thename of the Father, and of the Son, and of the HolyGhost.

They reply Amen. Then they make a reverence and go with the Acolytes to thelectern. They do not sign the book nor themselves as they begin tosing or read.

(The Priest who celebrates alone, after the reading of the Gradualand Tract, says Cleanse, O Lord and asks a blessing in the usualfashion at the middle of the Altar. He then reads or sings the

This fashion of singing or reading is to be observed on thefollowing days when the Passion is appointed to be read

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRISTACCORDING TO ST MATTHEW

The parts read by the narrator are marked Narrator: the words of our Lord, read by another voice, are marked : the words of others, read by the whole congregation, are marked People: .

Narrator:  When the morning was come, all the chiefpriests and elders of the people took counsel against

Jesus, to put him to death. And when they hadbound him, they led him away, and delivered him toPontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas who hadbetrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty piecesof silver to the chief priests and elders, saying,

People:  I have sinned, in that I have betrayed theinnocent blood.

Narrator:  And they said,

People:  What is that to us? See thou to that.

Narrator:  And he cast down the pieces of silver in thetemple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said,

People:  It is not lawful for to put them into the

treasury, because it is the price of blood.

Narrator:   And they took counsel, and bought withthem the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Whereforethat field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.(Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah

the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces ofsilver, the price of him that was valued, whom they ofthe children of Israel did value, and gave them for thepotter's field, as the Lord appointed me.)

Narrator:  And Jesus stood before the governor; andthe governor asked him, saying,

People:  Art thou the King of the Jews?

Narrator:  And Jesus said unto him,

 THOU SAYEST.

Narrator:  And when he was accused by the chiefpriests and elders, he answered nothing. Then saithPilate unto him,

People:  Hearest thou not how many things theywitness against thee?

Narrator:  And he gave him no answer, not even to asingle charge, insomuch that the governor marvelled

greatly. Now at that feast the governor was wont torelease unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilatesaid unto them,

People:  Whom will ye that I release unto you?Barabbas, or Jesus which is called the Christ?

N a r r a t or :   For he knew that for envy they haddelivered him. And while he was sitting on thejudgement-seat, his wife sent unto him, saying,

People:  Have thou nothing to do with that just man:for I have suffered many things this day in a dreambecause of him.

Narrator:  But the chief priests and elders persuadedthe multitude that they should ask Barabbas, anddestroy Jesus. The governor answered and said untothem,

People:  Which of the two will ye that I release untoyou?

Narrator:  They said,

People:  Barabbas.

Narrator:  Pilate saith unto them,

People:  What shall I do then with Jesus which is calledthe Christ?

Narrator:  They all say unto him,

People:  Let him be crucified.

Narrator:  And the governor said,

People:  Why, what evil hath he done?

Narrator:  But they cried out the more, saying,

People:  Let him be crucified.

Narrator:   When Pilate saw that he could prevailnothing, but that the tumult increased, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying,

People:  I am innocent of the blood of this just person:see ye to it.

Narrator:  Then answered all the people, and said,

People:  His blood be on us, and on our children.

Narrator:  Then released he Barabbas unto them: andwhen he had scourged Jesus he delivered him to becrucified.

Narrator:  Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesusinto the common hall, and gathered unto him thewhole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, andput on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platteda crown of thorns they put it upon his head, and areed in his right hand: and they bowed the kneebefore him, and mocked him, saying,

People:  Hail, King of the Jews.

Narrator:  And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. And after that they hadmocked him they took the robe off from him, and puthis own raiment on him, and led him away to crucifyhim.

Narrator:  And as they came out they found a man ofCyrene, Simon by name; him they compelled to bearhis cross. And when they were come unto a placecalled Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, theygave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and whenhe had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And theycrucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots. And sitting down they watched him there; and set upover his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS

THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then were there twothieves crucified with him; one on the right hand, andanother on the left. And they that passed by reviledhim, wagging their heads, and saying,

People:  Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildestit in three days, save thyself: if thou be the Son ofGod, come down from the cross.

Narrator:  Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

People:  He saved others, himself he cannot save: if hebe the King of Israel, let him now come down from thecross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; lethim deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, Iam the Son of God.

Narrator:  The thieves also, which were crucified withhim, cast the same in his teeth.

Narrator:  Now from the sixth hour there was darknessover all the land unto the ninth hour. And about theninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying,

THE BEGINNING OF THE PASSION OF OURLORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO ST MARK

FTER two days was the feast of the passover, andof unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the

scribes sought how they might take him by craft, andput him to death. But they said, Not on the feast-day,

lest there be an uproar of the people. And being in Bethany, in the house of Simon theleper, as Jesus sat at meat, there came a woman havingan alabaster box of ointment of spikenard, veryprecious; and she brake the box, and poured it on hishead. And there were some that had indignationwithin themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the

ointment made? for it might have been sold for morethan three hundred pieces of silver, and have beengiven to the poor: and they murmured against her.And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? shehath wrought a good work on me: for ye have the poorwith you always, and whensoever ye will ye may dothem good; but me ye have not always. She hath donewhat she could; she is come aforehand to anoint mybody to the burying. Verily I say unto you,Wheresoever this Gospel shall be preached throughoutthe whole world, this also that she hath done shall bespoken of for a memorial of her.

And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto thechief priests to betray him unto them. And when they

heard it they were glad, and promised to give himmoney. And he sought how he might convenientlybetray him.

And the first day of unleavened bread, when theykilled the passover, his disciples said unto him, Wherewilt thou that we go and prepare, that thou mayest eatthe passover? And he sendeth forth two of hisdisciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, andthere shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water;follow him: and wheresoever he shall go in, say ye tothe good-man of the house, The Master saith, Where isthe guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover withmy disciples? And he will show you a large upper roomfurnished and prepared: there make ready for us. Andhis disciples went forth, and came into the city, andfound as he had said unto them: and they made readythe passover.

And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. And as they sat, and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say

unto you, One of you which eateth with me shallbetray me. And they began to be sorrowful, and to sayunto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?And he answered and said unto them, It is one of thetwelve that dippeth with me in the dish. The Son ofman indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe tothat man by whom the Son of man is betrayed: good

were it for that man if he had never been born. And asthey were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, andbrake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this ismy body. And he took the cup, and when he hadgiven thanks he gave it to them: and they all drank ofit. And he said unto them, This is my blood of thecovenant, which is shed for many. Verily I say untoyou, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, untilthat day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.And when they had sung an hymn they went out intothe mount of Olives.

And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offendedbecause of me this night: for it is written, I will smitethe shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. But,

after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. But Peter said unto him, Although all shall beoffended, yet will not I. And Jesus saith unto him,Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in thisnight, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny methrice. But he spake the more vehemently, If I shoulddie with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise.Likewise also said they all. And they came to a placewhich was named Gethsemane: and he saith to hisdisciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray. And he takethwith him Peter and James and John, and began to besore amazed, and to be very heavy, and saith untothem, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death; tarryye here, and watch. And he went forward a little, andfell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba,Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away thiscup from me; nevertheless, not what I will, but whatthou wilt. And he cometh and findeth them sleeping,

and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldestnot thou watch one hour? Watch ye and pray, lest yeenter into temptation: the spirit truly is ready, but theflesh is weak. And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words. And when he returned hefound them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,)neither wist they what to answer him. And he cometh

the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, andtake your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude withswords and staves, from the chief priests and thescribes and the elders. And he that betrayed him hadgiven them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. And as soon as he was come he goeth straightway tohim , and saith, Master, master; and kissed him. Andthey laid their hands on him, and took him. And oneof them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a

servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. AndJesus answered, and said unto them, Are ye come outas against a thief, with swords and with staves, to takeme? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, andye took me not: but the Scriptures must be fulfilled. And they all forsook him, and fled. And therefollowed him a certain young man, having a linen clothcast about his naked body; and the young men laidhold on him: and he left the linen cloth, and fled fromthem naked.

And they led Jesus away to the high priest: andwith him were assembled all the chief priests and theelders and the scribes. And Peter followed him afaroff, even into the palace of the high priest; and he satwith the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. Andthe chief priests and all the council sought for witnessagainst Jesus to put him to death; and found none. For many bare false witness against him, but theirwitness agreed not together. And there arose certain,

and bare false witness against him, saying, We heardhim say, I will destroy this temple that is made withhands, and within three days I will build anothermade without hands. But neither so did their witnessagree together. And the high priest stood up in themidst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thounothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Againthe high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thouthe Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, Iam; and ye shall see the Son of Man sitting on theright hand of power, and coming in the clouds ofheaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, andsaith, What need we any further witnesses? ye haveheard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they allcondemned him to be worthy of death. And somebegan to spit on him, and to cover his face, and tobuffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and theservants did strike him with the palms of their hands.[That which follows is sung in the tone of the Gospel.]

And as Peter was beneath in the palace there cometh

one of the maids of the high priest; and when she sawPeter warming himself she looked upon him, and said,And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. But hedenied, saying, I know not, neither understand I whatthou sayest. And he went out into the porch. And amaid saw him again, and began to say to them thatstood by, This is one of them. And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again toPeter, Surely thou art one of them; for thou art aGalilaean. But he began to curse and to swear, saying,

I know not this man of whom ye speak. Andimmediately the second time the cock crew. And Petercalled to mind the word that Jesus said unto him,Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

THE CONTINUATION OF THE PASSION OF OURLORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO ST MARK

the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried himaway, and delivered him to Pilate. And Pilate asked

him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answeringsaid unto him, Thou sayest it. And the chief priestsaccused him of many things. And Pilate asked himagain, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold howmany things they witness against thee. But Jesus yetanswered nothing: so that Pilate marvelled. Now atthat feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one namedBarabbas, which lay bound with them that had madeinsurrection with him, who had committed murder inthe insurrection. And the multitude, crying aloud, began to desire him to do as he had ever done untothem. But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that Irelease unto you the King of the Jews? For he knew

that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. Butthe chief priests moved the people, that he shouldrather release Barabbas unto them. And Pilateanswered, and said again unto them, What will ye thenthat I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of theJews? And they cried out again, Crucify him. ThenPilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.And so Pilate, willing to content the people, releasedBarabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he hadscourged him, to be crucified.

And the soldiers led him away into the hall, calledPraetorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and platted acrown of thorns, and put it about his head: and beganto salute him, Hail, King of the Jews. And they smotehim on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him,and bowing their knees worshipped him. And whenthey had mocked him, they took off the purple from

him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him outto crucify him.And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who

passed by, coming out of the country, the father ofAlexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. And theybring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, beinginterpreted, The place of a skull. And they gave him to

And it was the third hour, and theycrucified him. And the superscription of his accusationwas written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Andwith him they crucify two thieves, the one on his righthand, and the other on his left. And they that passedby railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah,thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it inthree days, save thyself, and come down from thecross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking saidamong themselves, with the scribes, He saved others;himself he cannot save. Let the Christ, the King of

Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may seeand believe. And they that were crucified with himreviled him.

And when the sixth hour was come, there wasdarkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? [É-lo-i, É-lo-i, lá-ma sa-bach’-tha-ni) which is, being interpreted, MyGod, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And someof them that stood by, when they heard it, said,Behold, he calleth Elijah. And one ran and filled asponge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gavehim to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whetherElijah will come to take him down. And Jesus criedwith a loud voice, and gave up the spirit. [Here genuflectand pause awhile. THE EPISTLE. Hebrews 9. 15.

RETHREN: Wherefore Christ is the Mediator of thenew covenant, that by means of death, for the

redemption of the transgressions which were under thefirst covenant, they which are called might receive thepromise of an eternal inheritance. For where acovenant or testament is, there must also, of necessity,be the death of the testator; for a testament is of force

after men are dead; it is of no strength at all while thetestator liveth. And therefore the first testament alsowas dedicated with blood; for when Moses hadspoken every commandment to all the people, according to the law, he took the blood of calves andof goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, andsprinkled both the book and all the people, saying,This is the blood of the covenant or testament, whichGod hath commanded you. Moreover, he sprinkledwith blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of

the ministry. And according to the law, almost allthings are purified with blood, and without sheddingof blood there is no forgiveness.

It was necessary therefore that these symbols ofheavenly things should be purified thus; but theheavenly things themselves with better sacrifices; forChrist hath not entered into holy places made withhands, which are only figures of the true, but intoheaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for

us. Nor need he offer himself many times like the highpriest who entereth into the holy place every year withblood that is not his own: for then must he often havesuffered since the foundation of the world; but now, once for all, at the end of time, he hath appeared to putaway sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it isappointed unto men once to die, but after this the

THE BEGINNING OF THE PASSION OF OURLORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO ST LUKE

OW the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. And the chief priests

and scribes sought how they might kill him; for theyfeared the people. Then entered Satan into Judassurnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chiefpriests and captains, how he might betray him untothem. And they were glad, and covenanted to givehim money. And he promised, and sought

opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence ofthe multitude.

Then came the day of unleavened bread, when thepassover must be killed. And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we mayeat. And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that weprepare? And he said unto them, Behold, when ye areentered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the housewhere he entereth in. And ye shall say unto the good-man of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where isthe guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover withmy disciples? And he shall show you a large upperroom furnished; there make ready. And they went,

and found as he had said unto them: and they madeready the passover.

And when the hour was come he sat down, and thetwelve Apostles with him. And he said unto them,With desire I have desired to eat this passover withyou before I suffer: for I say unto you, I will not anymore eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom ofGod. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said,Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I sayunto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, untilthe kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you: this doin remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup aftersupper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in myblood, which is shed for you. But behold, the hand ofhim that betrayeth me is with me on the table. Andtruly the Son of man goeth as it was determined; butwoe unto that man by whom he is betrayed. And they

began to inquire among themselves, which of them itwas that should do this thing. And there was also astrife among them, which of them should be accountedthe greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of theGentiles exercise lordship over them; and they thatexercise authority upon them are called Benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among

you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, ashe that doth serve. For which is the greater, he thatsitteth at the table, or he that serveth? is not he thatsitteth at the table? but I am among you as he thatserveth. Ye are they that have continued with me inmy temptations. And I make a covenant with you, asmy Father hath made a covenant with me, even akingdom; that ye may eat and drink at my table in mykingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribesof Israel.

And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satanhath desired to have you, that he may sift you aswheat: but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith failnot; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy

brethren. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready togo with thee both into prison and to death. And hesaid, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowestme. And he said unto them, When I sent you withoutpurse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? Andthey said, Nothing. Then said he unto them, But now,he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise hisscrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell hisgarment, and buy one. For I say unto you, That thisthat is written must yet be accomplished in me, And hewas reckoned among the transgressors: for the thingsconcerning me have an end. And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them,It is enough. And he came out, and went, as he waswont, to the mount of Olives, and his disciples alsofollowed him.

And when he was at the place, he said unto them,Pray, that ye enter not into temptation. And he was

withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, andkneeled down and prayed, saying, Father, if thou bewilling, remove this cup from me: nevertheless, not mywill, but thine be done. And there appeared an angelunto him from heaven, strengthening him. And beingin an agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweatwas as it were great drops of blood falling down to the

ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and wascome to his disciples, he found them sleeping forsorrow, and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise andpray, lest ye enter into temptation. And while he yetspake, behold, a multitude, and he that was calledJudas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drewnear unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him,Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? When they who were about him saw what wouldfollow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite withthe sword? And one of them smote the servant of thehigh priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesusanswered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touchedhis ear, and healed him. Then Jesus said unto the chief

priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders whowere come to him, Be ye come out as against a thief, with swords and staves? When I was daily with you inthe temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: butthis is your hour, and the power of darkness.

Then took they him, and led him, and brought himinto the high priest's house: and Peter followed afaroff. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst ofthe hall, and were set down together, Peter sat downamong them. But a certain maid beheld him, as he satby the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said,This man was also with him. And he denied it, saying,Woman, I know him not. And after a little whileanother saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. AndPeter said, Man, I am not. And about the space of onehour after, another confidently affirmed, saying, Of atruth this fellow also was with him; for he is aGalilaean. And Peter said, Man, I know not whatthou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the

cock crew. And the Lord turned, and looked uponPeter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thoushalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and weptbitterly. [That which follows is sung in the tone of the Gospel.]

And the men that held Jesus mocked him, andsmote him. And when they had blindfolded him, they

struck him on the face, and asked him, saying,Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? And many otherthings blasphemously spake they against him. And assoon as it was day, the elders of the people and thechief priests and the scribes came together, and led himinto their council, saying, Art thou the Christ? tell us.And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will notbelieve: and if I also ask you, ye will not answer me,nor let me go. Hereafter shall the Son of Man sit on theright hand of the power of God. Then said they all,Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them,Ye say that I am. And they said, What need we anyfurther witness? for we ourselves have heard of hisown mouth.

were instant with loud voices, requiring that he mightbe crucified; and their voices prevailed. And Pilategave sentence that it should be as they required. Andhe released unto them him that for sedition andmurder was cast into prison, whom they had desired;but he delivered Jesus to their will.

And as they led him away, they laid hold upon oneSimon a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and onhim they laid the cross, that he might bear it afterJesus. And there followed him a great company ofpeople, and of women, which also bewailed andlamented him. But Jesus, turning unto them, said,Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep foryourselves, and for your children. For behold, the days

are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are thebarren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breastswhich never gave suck. Then shall they begin to sayto the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.For if they do these things in a green tree, what shallbe done in the dry? And there were also two others, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

And when they were come to the place which iscalled Calvary, there they crucified him; and themalefactors, one on the right hand, and the other onthe left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for theyknow not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. And the people stood beholding; andthe rulers also with them derided him, saying, Hesaved others; let him save himself, if he be the Christ, the chosen one of God. And the soldiers also mockedhim, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, andsaying, If thou be the King of the Jews, save thyself. And a superscription also was written over him in

letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THEKING OF THE JEWS. And one of the malefactors, which were hanged, railed on him, saying, If thou bethe Christ, save thyself and us. But the otheranswering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fearGod, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? Andwe indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our

And itwas about the sixth hour: and there was a darknessover all the land until the ninth hour, the sun's lightfailing; and the veil of the temple was rent in themidst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, hesaid, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: andhaving said thus, he gave up the spirit. [Here genuflectand pause awhile. That which follows is sung in the tone of theGospel.]

Now when the centurion saw what was done, heglorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous

man. And all the people that came together to thatsight, beholding the things that were done, smote theirbreasts and returned. And all his acquaintance, andthe women that followed him from Galilee, stood afaroff, beholding these things.

LMIGHTY GOD, we beseech thee graciously tobehold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus

Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up intothe hands of wicked men, and to suffer death uponthe cross; who now liveth and reigneth with thee andthe Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end.

MERCIFUL God, who hast made all men, andhatest nothing that thou hast made, nor wouldest

flock under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord; wholiveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, oneGod, world without end.  Amen.

The Celebrant with the Sacred Ministers go to the sedilia. The

Epistle is read by the Subdeacon (or a lector, or the Celebranthimself).

THE EPISTLE. Hebrews 10. 1.

RETHREN: The law of Moses, having as it were ashadow of good things which were to come, but

not the very image of those things, can never withthose sacrifices which they offered continually, year byyear, make the comers thereunto perfect; for thenwould they not have ceased to be offered? since theworshippers, once they had been purified, should havehad no more consciousness of sins. But in thosesacrifices a remembrance of sins is made over againevery year. For it is not possible that the blood of bullsand of goats should take away sins.

Wherefore, when Christ cometh into the world, hesaith,

Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not,But a body hast thou prepared me:

In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sinthou hast had no pleasure:Then said I, Lo, I come(In the volume of the book it is written of me)To do thy will, O God.

Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt-offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein, (which are offeredaccording to the law;) then said he, Lo, I come to dothy will, O God: he taketh away the first, that he mayestablish the second. By the which will we aresanctified, through the offering of the body of JesusChrist once for all.

And every priest standeth daily in his ministryoffering many times those same sacrifices which cannever take away sins; but this man, after he hadoffered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down at the

right of hand of God, waiting from henceforth till hisenemies be made his footstool. For by one singleoffering he hath perfected for ever those who aresanctified; whereof the Holy Spirit also is a witness tous. For after saying,

This is the covenant that I will make with themAfter those days, saith the Lord,I will put my laws into their hearts,And in their minds will I write them;

then saith he,And their sins and iniquities will I remember nomore.

Now where remission of these is, there is no moreoffering for sin.

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter intothe holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and livingway, which he hath consecrated for us, through theveil, that is to say, his flesh; and having an High Priestover the house of God: let us draw near with a trueheart, in full assurance of faith, having our heartssprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodieswashed with pure water. Let us hold fast theprofession of our faith, without wavering; (for he isfaithful that promised;) and let us consider one anotherto provoke unto love, and to good works; notforsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as themanner of some is; but exhorting one another: and somuch the more, as ye see the Day approaching.

People: Behold the man!

Narrator: When Pilate therefore heard that saying, hebrought Jesus forth, and sat down in thejudgement-seat, in a place that is called thePavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith untothe Jews,

People: Behold your King!

Narrator: But they cried out,

People: Away with him, away with him, crucifyhim.

Narrator: Pilate saith unto them,

People: Shall I crucify your king?

Narrator: The chief priests answered,

People: We have no king but Caesar.

Narrator: Then delivered he him therefore unto themto be crucified: and they took Jesus, and ledhim away.

Narrator: And he, bearing his cross, went forth into aplace called the place of a skull, which iscalled in the Hebrew, Golgotha: where theycrucified him, and two other with him, oneither side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on thecross; and the writing was, JESUS OFNAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

This title then read many of the Jews: forthe place where Jesus was crucified wasnigh to the city: and it was written inHebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then saidthe chief priests of the Jews to Pilate,

People: Write not, The King of the Jews; but that hesaid, I am the King of the Jews.

Narrator: Pilate answered,

People: What I have written, I have written.

Narrator: Then the soldiers, when they had crucified

Jesus, took his garments, and made fourparts, to every soldier a part; and also hiscoat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They saidtherefore among themselves,

People: Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whoseit shall be:

Narrator: that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which

saith,They parted my raiment among them. And for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

Narrator: Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, hismother, and his mother's sister; Mary thewife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, andthe disciple standing by, whom he loved,he saith unto his mother,

  WOMAN, BEHOLD THY SON.

Narrator: Then saith he to the disciple,

  BEHOLD THY MOTHER.

Narrator: And from that hour that disciple took herunto his own home. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now

accomplished, that the Scripture might befulfilled, saith,

  IT IS FINISHED:

Narrator: and he bowed his head, and gave up hisspirit.

[All kneel and pause awhile. That which follows issung in the tone of the Gospel.]

Narrator: The Jews therefore, because it was thepreparation, that the bodies should notremain upon the cross on the sabbath day,(for that sabbath was an high day,)

besought Pilate that their legs might bebroken, and that they might be taken away. The soldiers, therefore, came and brake thelegs of the first, and of the other which wascrucified with him. But when they came toJesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs. But one of thesoldiers with a spear pierced his side, andforthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bore witness, and his

witness is true: and he knoweth that hesaith true, that ye might believe. For thesethings were done that the Scripture shouldbe fulfilled, A bone of him shall not bebroken. And again another Scripture saith,They shall look on him whom they pierced.

The singing or reading of the Passion of the Lord being ended, aSermon may be preached and a Hymn may be sung.

After the last collect, the Celebrant and his Ministers go by theshortest route to the sedilia, where cope, dalmatic and tunicle are

They return atonce with the Crucifix veiled in purple: the Acolytes precede theDeacon, (or arrange themselves on either side of him). TheCelebrant and Subdeacon (on the Celebrant’s left) go to the centreat the foot of the steps where the Deacon with the Crucificor meetsthem, and gives the Celebrant the Crucifix. They all go to theEpistle side of the Altar where the first unveiling takes place.

When the Veneration is finished, the Acolytes or Servers carry theCross with reverence back to the Altar.

PART IV THE HOLY COMMUNION

Towards the end of the Veneration, the Sacred Ministers removetheir black stoles and vest in purple mass vestments.

The Deacon takes the purple burse, goes by the long way up to theAltar, making the proper reverence, and spreads the corporal, andreturns to the sedilia the short way. An Acolyte places a smallvessel of water and the towel for the purification of the Celebrant’sfingers, and the MC arranges the Missal on its disk to the left of thecorporal.

Then a Procession is formed to the Altar of Repose. When thePriest and Sacred Ministers have come to the Altar of Repose, thePriest kneels before the Sacrament and prays awhile; andafterward, the Deacon opens the Tabernacle and, the Priest(wearing a white humeral veil) and Deacon carry the BlessedSacrament to the Altar. As the Blessed Sacrament is returned to theAltar, the hymn Vexilla Regis  is sung, and other Antiphons asneeded.

1. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee,

because by thy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.2. As by a tree we were brought into bondage, soby the cross we have been delivered; by the fruit of atree were we beguiled, by the Son of God have webeen redeemed.

2. O Saviour of the world, be our salvation: thouwho by the cross and precious Blood hast redeemed us,come to our aid, O our God, we entreat thee.

When the Priest and Deacon have come to the Altar, they place the

vessels containing the Blessed Sacrament upon the corporal. ThePriest places the Host upon the Paten; and the Deacon pours thePrecious Blood into the Chalice. When all is prepared, the Priestsays:

THE EPISTLE. 1 St Peter 3. 17.

RETHREN: It is better, if the will of God be so,that ye suffer for well-doing, than for evil-doing.

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for

the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being putto death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: bywhich also he went and preached unto the spirits inprison; which sometime were disobedient, when oncethe long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared; wherein few, that is,eight souls, were saved by water. The like figurewhereunto, even baptism, doth also now save us, (notthe putting away of the filth of the flesh, but theanswer of a good conscience towards God,) by theresurrection of Jesus Christ: who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God, angels and authoritiesand powers being made subject unto him.

TRACT

Ps. 42. 8-14.  MY soul is vexed within me; therefore willI remember thee / from the land of Jordan, fromHermon, and the Little Hill.

9 One deep calleth another, because of the noise

of thy torrents; / all thy waves and thy billows are goneover me.

10 The LORD  will grant his loving-kindness in theday-time; / and in the night-season will I sing of him,and make my prayer unto the God of my life.

11 I will say unto God my rock, 'Why hast thouforgotten me? / why go I thus heavily, while the enemyoppresseth me?'

12 My bones are smitten asunder, while mine

enemies reproach me, / while they say daily unto me,'Where is now thy God?'13 Why art thou so vexed, O my soul? / and why

art thou so disquieted within me?14 O put thy trust in God, for I will yet give him

thanks, / who is the help of my countenance, and myGod.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 27. 57.

HEN the even was come, there came a rich manof Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself

was Jesus' disciple. He went to Pilate, and begged the

body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to bedelivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, hewrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his ownnew tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and herolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, anddeparted. And there was Mary Magdalene, and theother Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. Nowthe next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together untoPilate, saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will riseagain. Command therefore that the sepulchre be madesure until the third day, lest his disciples come by nightand steal him away, and say unto the people, He isrisen from the dead: so the last error shall be worsethan the first. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch;go your way, make it as sure as you can. So they wentand made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, andsetting a watch.

The following may be read.

AN ANCIENT HOMILY

THE LORD’S DESCENT INTO HELL

Adam and his fellow-prisoner Eve from their pains, hewho is God, and Adam’s son.

The Lord goeth in unto them holding his victoriousweapon, his cross. When Adam, the first created man, seeth him, he striketh his breast in terror and crieth outto all, 'My Lord be with you all.' And Christ in replysaith to Adam: 'And with thy spirit.' And grasping hishand he raiseth him up, saying: 'Awake, O sleeper, and from the dead arise thee, and Christ shall give theelight.’

'I am thy God, who for thy sake became thy son,who for thee and thy descendants now speaketh andcommandeth with authority to those in prison, Comeforth. And to those in darkness, Receive ye light. And

to them that sleep, I say, Arise.'I command thee, Awake, O sleeper: I have not

made thee to be held prisoner in the underworld.Arise from the dead: I am the life of the dead. Arise, Oman, work of my hands; Arise, thou who wertfashioned in my image. Come, let us go hence: forthou in me and I in thee, together we are oneundivided person.

'For thee, I your God became thy son. For thee, Ithe Master took on thy form--that of a slave. For thee,I who am above the heavens came on earth and underearth. For thee, O man, I became as a man withouthelp, free among the dead. For thee, who left agarden, I was handed over to Jews from a garden andcrucified in a garden.

'Look at the spittle on my face, which I receivedbecause of thee, in order to restore thee to that firstdivine inbreathing at creation. See the blows on mycheeks, which I accepted in order to refashion your

distorted form to mine own image. See the scourgingof my back, which I accepted in order to disperse theload of thy sins which were laid upon thy back. Seemy hands nailed to the tree for a good purpose: forthee, who stretched out thine hand to the tree for anevil one.

'But arise, let us go hence. The enemy brought theeout of the land of paradise; but I will restore thee: nolonger to paradise, but to the throne of heaven. THE LITURGY FOR HOLY SATURDAY:

THE EASTER VIGIL

I.  The Lucenarium: The New Fireand The Light Of Christ

At a suitable hour the Altar is prepared as for High Mass, but thecandles on the Altar are not lighted until the beginning of the Mass;the Church remains in darkness. In a place outside the church, afire is struck from a flint (which may be from an automatic lighter),and coals are kindled from the fire.

The Celebrant, vested in amice, alb, girdle, violet stole, and violetcope, or without the chasuble, accompanied by the SacredMinisters, likewise vested with dalmatic and tunicle, and the

Servers with Cross, holy water, and incense, proceeds to the porchof the Church, and blesses the New Fire, in the Ferial tone:

Celebrant: The Lord be with you;People: And with thy spirit.Celebrant: Let us pray.

GOD, who, through thy Son, who is the trueCornerstone, hast bestowed upon thy faithful

people the fire of thy brightness: we beseech thee that

thou wouldest sanc

tify this new fire now struck fromthe flintstone, to be profitable to our service: and grantunto us, that by this Paschal Feast we may be soinflamed with heavenly desires, that we may with purehearts and minds attain unto the feast of thy eternalbrightness; through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The prayer ended, the Celebrant thrice sprinkles with holy waterthe new fire, saying nothing. The Acolyte takes some of the blessedcoals from the fire and places them in the censer; the Celebrantthen sets incense in the censer from the boat, and blesses it in the

customary manner, then thrice incenses the fire.

While the Deacon holds the Paschal Candle, the Priest marks theCandle with a cross, the letters Alpha and Omega, and the date, saying:

HRIST yesterday and today, / the Beginning andthe End, / Alpha / and Omega / his are all Times /

and all Ages; / to him be glory and dominion, / throughall the ages of eternity. Amen.

He fixes the five grains of incense in the Candle, saying:

When this is completed, the Celebrant takes one of the smallcandles from the table, lights it from the new fire. He lights theCandle, saying:

AY the light of Christ in glory rising scatter thedarkness of heart and mind.

Then he blesses the lighted Candle, saying in the Ferial tone;

Celebrant: The Lord be with you;People: And with thy spirit.

Celebrant: Let us pray.LMIGHTY GOD, who art thyself unseen and yetrenewest all things, shed forth upon this lighted

Candle the abundance of thy bles sing, and makemore splendid still the brightness of this night: mayour offering shine more radiantly through the presenceof thy hidden glory; and may this light shine in ourhearts, to drive out the hidden deeds of darkness andmake manifest the power of thy majesty; through

THE SOLEMN PROCESSION OF THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

The Deacon changes his purple dalmatic and stole for a whitedalmatic and stole. His purple dalmatic and stole are removed tothe seat he will occupy after the Procession and Exsultet.

The procession is then formed, and goes into the church in thefollowing order: First the Thurifer with incense burning; then theCrucifer bearing the Cross; then the Acolytes, carrying theunlighted torches; then the Deacon carrying the Paschal Candle in both hands; after him the Subdeacon and the Celebrant; if all has sofar been done outside, then follow the other clergy, the servers, and the people.

When the Deacon has entered the Church, the procession halts; theThurifer, Crucifer and Acolytes turn to face the Deacon. TheDeacon raises the Paschal Candle high, and sings on acomparatively low note:

THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

And all, except the Deacon and Crucifer, facing towards thePaschal Candle, genuflect and respond:

THANKS BE TO GOD

The Celebrant then lights his own hand-candle from the PaschalCandle. The procession is resumed, to halt again in the middle of the church. The Deacon again sings The Light of Christ,  but on ahigher note than before; all genuflect and respond as before; and

the hand-candles of the Clergy and the torches of the Acolytesare lighted. Again the procession resumes; it halts again in themidst of the Sanctuary before the Altar (i.e. between the PaschalCandlestick and the Altar Rail). The Deacon sings a third timeThe Light of Christ, in a still higher pitch; all is done as before, andthis time the hand-candles of the congregation, are lighted, and allthe lights of the church.

The Deacon then places the Paschal Candle in its stand. TheCelebrant and Subdeacon go their appointed places; the Serversgo to their respective places; and the clergy take their places inchoir.

THE EXSULTET OR PASCHAL PROCLAMATION

The Thurifer, still holding the censer, goes to stand by the lectern atwhich the Exsultet will be sung; the Deacon goes to the Celebrant, and incense is put on. The Deacon receives the book of theExsultet; he and the MC reverence the altar, and go before the

Celebrant.

Kneeling before the Celebrant, the Deacon says:

Deacon: Bid, sir, a blessing.

The Celebrant gives the blessing, saying:

HE Lord be in thy heart and on thy lips, thatthou mayest worthily and fitly proclaim his

paschal praise: In the Name of the Father, and of

the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Deacon rises, bows slightly to the Celebrant, and goes withthe MC to the lectern which is covered with a white hanging, andplaces the book of the Exsultet on it.

The Deacon takes the censer from the Thurifer, and incenses the book, as at the gospel, with three double swings; and then, goinground the Paschal Candle, incenses it with a series of swings, somewhat similar to the incensing of the Altar. He returns thecenser to the Thurifer, who takes it out and then returns, takinghis place with the Servers.

All now stand, holding their hand-candles lighted.

The Deacon now chants the Exsultet, facing the Paschal Candle, the Altar on his right, and the nave of the church on his left.

II. The Lessons

The blessing of the Paschal Candle ended, the Clergy, Servers andpeople extinguish their candles, and the Sacred Ministers go to theirappointed places, where the Deacon resumes his purple dalmaticand stole. The Lessons are now read from the lectern.

All are seated for the Lessons; but kneel for the Collects at the endof each Lesson. The Lessons are not introduced but beginimmediately with the opening verse.

FIRST LESSON.Genesis 1: 1-31 and 2: 1-2.

N THE BEGINNING GOD created the heaven andthe earth. And the earth was without form, and

void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of thewaters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was

light. And God saw the light, that it was good: andGod divided the light from the darkness. And Godcalled the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midstof the waters, and let it divide the waters from thewaters. And God made the firmament, and divided

the waters which were under the firmament from thewaters which were above the firmament: and it was so.And God called the firmament Heaven. And theevening and the morning were the second day.

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven begathered together unto one place, and let the dry landappear: and it was so. And God called the dry landEarth; and the gathering together of the waters calledhe Seas: and God saw that it was good. And God

said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yieldingseed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yieldingseed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whoseseed was in itself, after his kind; and God saw that it

was good. And the evening and the morning were thethird day.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmamentof the heaven to divide the day from the night; and letthem be for signs and for seasons, and for days, andyears: And let them be for lights in the firmament ofthe heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.And God made two great lights; the greater light torule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; hemade the stars also. And God set them in thefirmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and todivide the light from the darkness: and God saw that itwas good. And the evening and the morning were the

fourth day.And God said, Let the waters bring forth

abundantly the moving creature that hath life, andfowl that may fly above the earth in the openfirmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which thewaters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, andevery winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that itwas good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and letfowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and themorning were the fifth day.

And God said, Let the earth bring forth the livingcreature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, andbeast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. AndGod made the beast of the earth after his kind, andevery thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind:and God saw that it was good.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after

our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fishof the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over thecattle, and over all the earth, and over every creepingthing that creepeth upon the earth. So God createdman in his own image, in the image of God created hehim; male and female created he them. And Godblessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and

multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: andhave dominion over the fish of the sea, and over thefowl of the air, and over every living thing that movethupon the earth.

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herbbearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a treeyielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to everybeast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and toevery thing that creepeth upon the earth, whereinthere is life, I have given every green herb for meat:and it was so. And God saw everything that he hadmade, and, behold, it was very good. And the eveningand the morning were the sixth day.

THUS the heavens and the earth were finished, andall the host of them. And on the seventh day Godended his work which he had made; and he rested onthe seventh day from all his work which he had made.

ET us pray. Deacon: Let us bow the knee. R: Arise.

GOD, who in a wondrous manner didst createthe race of man, and still more wondrously hast

redeemed the same: grant us, we beseech thee; so

steadfastly to withstand all the crafts and devices ofsin; that we may be found worthy to attain everlastingfelicity; through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

SECOND LESSON.Exodus 14: 24-31 and 15: 1.

ND it came to pass, that in the morning watch theLO R D   looked unto the host of the Egyptians

through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, andtroubled the host of the Egyptians, and took off theirchariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so thatthe Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel;for the LORD  fighteth for them against the Egyptians. And the LORD   said unto Moses, Stretch out thinehand over the sea, that the waters may come againupon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upontheir horsemen. And Moses stretched forth his hand

over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength whenthe morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled againstit; and the LORD   overthrew the Egyptians in the midstof the sea. And the waters returned, and covered thechariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaohthat came into the sea after them; there remained not somuch as one of them. But the children of Israel walkedupon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waterswere a wall unto them on their right hand, and ontheir left. Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out ofthe hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw theEgyptians dead upon the sea shore. And Israel sawthat great work which the L O R D   did upon theEgyptians: and the people feared the L O R D , and

believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.THEN sang Moses and the children of Israel this

song unto the LORD, and spake, saying:

Canticle:  Cantemus Domino

E WILL sing unto the Lord; for He hathtriumphed gloriously: / the horse and his rider

hath he thrown into the sea.The Lord is my strength and my song: / and He is

become my salvation.

He is my God, and I will prepare Him an habitation; / my father's God, and I will exalt Him.

The Lord is a man of war; / the Lord is His Name.

ET us pray. Deacon: Let us bow the knee. R: Arise.

GOD, who hast ordained that thy mighty worksof old should enlighten even this our present

generation: who didst by the mighty defence of thy

right hand deliver one people from persecution in theland of Egypt to be a figure of the salvation of allnations by the washing of regeneration: grant, we praythee; that the fullness of all mankind, being deliveredfrom its present bondage, may be made sons ofAbraham and worthy members of thy true Israel;through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

THIRD LESSON.Isaiah 4: 2 - 6.

N that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautifuland glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be

excellent and comely for them that are escaped ofIsrael. And it shall come to pass, that he that is left inZion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall becalled holy, even every one that is written among theliving in Jerusalem: when the Lord shall have washedaway the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall havepurged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereofby the spirit of judgement, and by the spirit ofburning. And the LO R D  will create upon everydwelling place of Mount Zion, and upon her

assemblies, a cloud by day, and smoke and the shiningof a flaming fire by night: for over all the glory shall bea covering. And there shall be a tabernacle for ashadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place ofrefuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.

Canticle:  Vinea facta est dilecto

FOURTH LESSON.Deuteronomy 31: 22-30.

OSES therefore wrote this song the same day,and taught it to the children of Israel. And he

gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Bestrong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring thechildren of Israel into the land which I sware untothem: and I will be with thee.

And it came to pass, when Moses had made an endof writing the words of this law in a book, until theywere finished, that Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD,saying, Take this book of the law, and put it by theside of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God,that it may be there for a witness against thee. For Iknow thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while Iam yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebelliousagainst the LORD ; and how much more after my death?

Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, andyour officers, that I may speak these words in theirears, and call heaven and earth to record against them. For I know that after my death ye will utterly corruptyourselves and turn aside from the way which I have

commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latterdays; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD,to provoke him to anger through the work of yourhands.

And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregationof Israel the words of this song, until they were ended.

Canticle: Attende coelum

IVE EAR, O ye heavens, and I will speak: / andhear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

My doctrine shall drop as the rain: / my speech shalldistil as the dew,

As the small rain upon the tender herb; and as theshowers upon the grass: / because I will publish theName of the Lord.

GOD, who dost exalt them that are of low estate, and dost establish them that stand upright: who

didst likewise by thy holy servant Moses so vouchsafeto teach thy people to sing praises to thy honour thatthy law by them repeated might be profitable for ourguidance: raise up, we pray thee, thy power among thefullness of the nations whom thou hast justified; that

He breathes thrice upon the water in the form of a cross, saying:

LESS with thy word and power this element ofwater: that as by nature it hath power to cleanse

and wash the body, so also it may be effectual for the

purifying of the soul.

Here the Celebrant lowers the Paschal Candle into the water a littleway: and resuming the tone of the Preface, says:

Then withdrawing the Paschal Candle from the water, he againdips it more deeply, and repeats in a somewhat higher voice, Maythe power…. Then again he withdraws the candle from the water, and the third time dips it to the bottom, repeating in a still highervoice: May the power… , as above.

Then breathing three times on the water in the form ! , heproceeds:

Here the Paschal Candle is taken out of the water, and he proceeds:

He says that which follows in the reading voice:

Through Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord: who shallcome to judge the quick and the dead, and the worldby fire.  Amen.

Then a Server takes some of the water in a vessel, for sprinklingthe people at the end of the renewal of promises of baptism (andfor sprinkling in houses and other places).

Which done, the Celebrant who is blessing the Font, pours some of the Oil of Catechumens into the water in the form of a cross, sayingin an audible voice:

AY this font be sanctified and made fruitful bythe Oil of Salvation, for such as shall be born

again therefrom, unto life everlasting.  Amen.M

Then in the same manner, he pours in some of the Chrism, saying:

AY this inpouring of the Chrism of our LordJesus Christ, and of the Holy Ghost the Paraclete,

be wrought in the name of the Holy Trinity.  Amen.

Lastly he takes both phials of the said holy Oil and Chrism, andpouring in some of both together in the form of a cross, says:

AY this commingling of the Chrism ofSanctification, and of the Oil of Unction, and of

the Water of Baptism, likewise be wrought in the nameof the Fat!her, and of the ! Son, and of the Holy !

Ghost.  Amen.

Then he mingles the Oil itself with the water.

IV. The Administration of Baptism

If Baptism is to be administered, it is done after the usual manner, from the form for the Ministration of Holy Baptism set forth in theBook of Common Prayer.

[If the Blessing of Water has taken place in the Sanctuary, the baptismal water is now carried in procession to the Font, in thismanner: the Thurifer goes before, there follow the Crucifer withthe cross, the Clergy, the Subdeacon, the Deacon carrying thevessel of baptismal water, unless it be convenient for it to becarried by one or more servers, and the Celebrant: but the PaschalCandle remains in its place; and meanwhile is said or sung Psalm42, together with the Collect immediately following, as set outabove on page 443.]

V. The Renewal of Baptismal Vows

After the blessing of the baptismal water (or if this does not takeplace, after the first part of the Litany), the Priest proceeds to therenewal of baptismal vows.

The Celebrant, laying aside his purple vestments puts on a white

stole and cope: he then puts incense in the thurible, and censes thecandle. Then standing in front of it, in the middle of the choir, orelse from a pulpit or ambo, or while still at the Font, he begins asfollows, with all holding lighted candles, the Celebrant says:

rendereth unto Him love for love, and keepeth vigil;and awaiting his glorious resurrection, rejoiceth withgreat gladness.

UT since, as the Apostle teacheth us, we have been

buried with Christ by Baptism into his death, solike as Christ was raised up from the dead, we tooshould walk in newness of life: knowing this, that ourold nature is crucified with him, that henceforth weshould not serve sin. Let us reckon ourselves thereforeto be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto Godthrough Jesus Christ our Lord.

HEREFORE, dearly beloved brethren, now thatour Lenten exercises are over, let us renew the

promises made in Holy Baptism, whereby we oncerenounced Satan and all his works, and likewise theworld which is the enemy of God, and promised toserve God faithfully in his holy Catholic Church.

I demand therefore:

O you here, in the presence of God, and of thisCongregation, renounce the devil and all his

works, the pomps and vanity of this wicked world, and all the sinful lusts of the flesh, so that you will notfollow nor be led by then?

People: I do.

Celebrant: Let us recite the Articles of our Belief:

BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker ofheaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who

was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the VirginMary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The thirdday he rose again from the dead; He ascended intoheaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God theFather Almighty; From thence he shall come to judgethe quick and the dead.

Everlasting. Amen.

Celebrant: Will you endeavour to keep God's holy willand commandments and to walk in the same all thedays of your life?

People: I will, God being my helper. And I heartilythank our heavenly Father, that he has called me intothis state of salvation through Jesus Christ our Saviour. And I pray unto God to give me his grace, that I maycontinue in the same unto my life's end. Amen.

The Celebrant shall conclude with the following:

ND may Almighty God, the Father of our LordJesus Christ, who hath regenerated us by water

and the Holy Ghost, and hath given unto usforgiveness of all our sins, himself guard us by hisgrace unto everlasting life, in the same Jesus Christ ourLord.  Amen.

V. THE SOLEMN MASS OF THE EASTER VIGIL

And here the Cantor(s) solemnly intones the Kyrie eleison, andrepeats each invocation thrice. Meanwhile the Celebrant with theSacred Ministers, all in best white vestments, approach the Altar, and making the usual reverence, go up to the Altar. The Altar is

censed in the usual manner. After which the Celebrant and SacredMinisters go to their places at the sedilia for the Fore-Mass.

As soon as the Choir shall have finished the Kyrie eleison,  theCelebrant solemnly intones Gloria in excelsis, and the organ soundsand the bells are set ringing.

At the conclusion of the Gloria in excelsis, begins the Liturgy of theWord with the Collect, Epistle, and Gospel of Easter.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Celebrant: The Lord be with you;People: And with thy spirit.Celebrant: Let us pray.

THE EPISTLE. 2 Timothy 2. 8.

RETHREN: Remember Jesus Christ, risen from thedead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel:

wherein I suffer trouble as an evil doer, even unto

bonds: but the word of God is not bound. Therefore Iendure all things for the elect's sake, that they also mayobtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, witheternal glory. This is a faithful saying: For if we bedead with him, we shall also live with him. If weendure, we shall also reign with him. If we deny him,he also will deny us. If we believe not, yet he abidethfaithful; he cannot deny himself. Of these things putthem in remembrance.

The Epistle ended, the Celebrant (or Cantor) immediately begins:

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

And he sings the chant through thrice, in a pitch a little higher each

time: and the choir after each time repeats it in the same manner.Afterward the Choir proceeds with the Gradual and Tract.

GRADUAL

EG:  Confitemini Domino. O give thanks unto the Lord, forhe is gracious: and his mercy endureth for ever.

TRACT

Laudate Dominum.  O PRAISE the Lord, all ye nations:laud him, all ye peoples. For his merciful kindness isever more and more towards us: and the truth of theLord endureth for ever.

At the Gospel, lights are not carried, but incense only: a blessing isasked, and the rest is done as usual.

HEN the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome,

bought sweet spices, that they might come and anointhim. And very early in the morning the first day of theweek, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of thesun. And they said among themselves, Who will rollus away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was

rolled away: for it was very great. And entering intothe sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on theright side, clothed in a long white garment; and theywere affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be notaffrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which wascrucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the placewhere they laid him. But go your way, tell his disciplesand Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: therewill ye see him, as he said unto you.

THE EASTER HOMILY OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

f any man be devout and loveth God,Let him enjoy this fair and radiant triumphal feast!

If any man be a wise servant,

Let him rejoicing enter into the joy of his Lord.

f any have laboured long in fasting,Let him now receive his recompense.

If any have wrought from the first hour,Let him today receive his just reward.If any have come at the third hour,Let him with thankfulness keep the feast.If any have arrived at the sixth hour,Let him have no misgivings;

Because he shall in nowise be deprived therefore. If any have delayed until the ninth hour,Let him draw near, fearing nothing. And if any have tarried even until the eleventh hour,Let him, also, be not alarmed at his tardiness.

or the Lord, who is jealous of his honour,Will accept the last even as the first.

He giveth rest unto him who cometh at the eleventhhour,Even as unto him who hath wrought from the firsthour. And He showeth mercy upon the last,And careth for the first; And to the one He giveth,And upon the other He bestoweth gifts. And He both accepteth the deeds,And welcometh the intention,And honoureth the acts and praises the offering.

herefore, enter ye all into the joy of your Lord;Receive your reward,

Both the first, and likewise the second. You rich and poor together, hold high festival! You sober and you heedless, honour the day!
