The Chrism Mass is held during Holy Week in every Catholic diocese. During this mass, the priests, deacons and rep-resentatives of the entire diocesan com-munity gather around their Bishop, who blesses the Holy Oils for use in the coming year. These are: Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens, and Sacred Chrism. Whenever the Holy Oils are used in a diocese, the ministry of the Bishop who consecrated them is sym-bolically present. The Chrism Mass reminds us of our unity in Christ through Baptism and its holy anointing, made possible by the ministry of the Bishop

and his priests. The Chrism mass is also a key moment in which the unity of the Bishop with his priests is manifested and renewed. During the liturgy, the entire assembly is called to renew its baptismal promises; deacons and priests also renew their vow of obedience to the local Bishop and their commitment to serve God’s people. At the end of the Chrism Mass, the Holy Oils are brought back to parishes of the dio-cese for use in the coming year.

Holy Week begins each year with the celebration of Palm Sunday. We as a catholic com-munity consider the Lord’s triumphal entry in the city of Jerusalem and listen to the Passion narrative. It is the only Sunday of the year in which there are two gospels proclaimed. His Holi-ness Pope Francis delivered this homily in which he invites the world to consider the true meaning of Palm Sunday and its importance to all of the celebrations of the Paschal Mystery: the Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Lord. This week begins with the festive procession with olive branches: the entire populace welcomes Jesus. The children and young people sing , praising Jesus. But this week continues

in the mystery of Jesus’ death and his resurrection. We have just listened to the Passion of our Lord. We might well ask our-selves just one question: Who am I? Who am I, before my Lord? Who am I, before Jesus who enters Jerusalem amid the en-thusiasm of the crowd? Am I ready to express my joy, to praise him? Or do I stand back? Who am I, before the suffering Je-sus? We have just heard many, many names. The group of leaders, some priests, the Pharisees, the teachers of the law, who had decided to kill Jesus. They were waiting for the chance to arrest him. Am I like one of them? We have also heard another name: Judas. Thirty pieces of silver. Am I like Judas? We have heard other names too: the disciples who understand nothing, who fell asleep while the Lord was suffering. Has my life fallen asleep? Or am I like the disciples, who did not realize what it was to betray Jesus? Or like that other disciple, who wanted to settle everything with a sword? Am I like them? Am I like Judas, who feigns loved and then kisses the Master in order to hand him over, to betray him? Am I a traitor? Am I like those people in power who hastily summon a tribunal and seek false witnesses: am I like them? And when I do these things, if I do them, do I think that in this way I am saving the people? Am I like Pilate? When I see that the situation is difficult, do I wash my hands and dodge my responsibility, allowing people to be condemned – or condemning them myself? Am I like that crowd which was not sure whether they were at a reli-gious meeting, a trial or a circus, and then chose Barabbas? For them it was all the same: it was more entertaining to humiliate Jesus. Am I like the soldiers who strike the Lord, spit on him, insult him, who find entertainment in humiliating him? Am I like the Cyrenean, who was returning from work, weary, yet was good enough to help the Lord carry his cross? Am I like those who walked by the cross and mocked Jesus: “He was so courageous! Let him come down from the cross and then we will be-lieve in him!”. Mocking Jesus…. Am I like those fearless women, and like the mother of Jesus, who were there, and who suffered in silence? Am I like Joseph, the hidden disciple, who lovingly carries the body of Jesus to give it burial? Am I like the two Marys, who remained at the Tomb, weeping and praying? Am I like those leaders who went the next day to Pilate and said, “Look, this man said that he was going to rise again. We cannot let another fraud take place!”, and who block life, who block the tomb, in order to main-tain doctrine, lest life come forth? Where is my heart? Which of these persons am I like? May this question remain with us throughout the entire week.

While Holy Thursday emphasizes the institution of the Holy Eucharist and Holy Orders, another aspect of this Mass is the Washing of feet. In many parts of the world this day is referred to as Maundy Thursday, derived from the first Latin word of John 13:34: Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos: I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” Jesus explains His washing of the apostles' feet with the Mandatum. The Lord's admonition at the end of this passage cannot be missed: "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you." The important thing, of course, is the love that lies behind the symbolic washing of feet and the manifold expres-sion of this love in manifold service to the community. But the Church has never lost sight of the concrete biblical sign the Lord had used in expressing his love

Prayer Chalice for Vocations A Family Lenten Prayer Experience

We are bringing back the program of family prayer for vo-cations with the prayer chalice. The purpose of the Chal-ice Program is to encourage families to pray and promote

vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. The consecrated Chalice is a tangible reminder of this special intention for the Church. Each week at Mass, an assigned family is invited to take the gifts up at the Offertory Procession. At the end of Mass, the family is called by the priest to come forward to receive the chalice and a blessing. The family takes the chalice home and puts it in a place of honor. Each day for a week, during prayer time (morning, bed-time or at meals), the family prays for an in-crease and perseverance of vocations. If you are interested in hosting the vocation chalice for a week, please contact Fr. Joe or Donna Spoto.

Why do some small groups grow and multiply and others don't? Is there some activity or set of activi-ties a small-group leader can do to increase the probability of the group growing and multiplying? If so, are these activities beyond the reach of the av-erage leader? Will it take years of training to master them? Or is there a set of activities that are attain-able and realistic that any small-group leader who wants to grow and multiply can put into his or her weekly schedule? ARISE is a faith based, small group faith sharing experience that helps men and women encounter the living Christ. It also trains men and women who wish to be leaders in the Catholic community. Do you feel called to become a member of a small group? Is the Lord inviting you to use the gifts of the Holy sprit to become a part of parish leadership? If the answer is yes to any of these questions join us as ARISE begins here at Holy Trinitiy! Contact Fr. Joe for more information. Please plan to join us as we begin this program!
