Last Sunday 18 th March, Holy Eucharist Parish celebrated its annual Multicultural Day with some fun activities. It was a great day and was well supported by the parishioners and school families. Parents I have stated this before, so I will repeat that no parent is allowed to feed their children through school gates during lunch and recess times. I want to discuss a very serious matter around social media and children in our school. Safe and proper usage of technology has been taught through our ICT Lessons, classroom lessons, parent information sessions over numerous years and continues to happen again in 2018. Parents please note the following: It is ILLEGAL for any child to have a Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and any other Social Media site until a child is of the age of 13 years old. If parents have allowed this to happen in their own homes, then they need to ensure there are proper, safe family procedures around this. Parents need to be aware of what their children are doing at home on IPads, mobile phones, laptops and desktops. The school already has safe measures within our school hours of 9am- 3.15 pm. On a lighter note, our school along with many other schools represented around Victoria, came together as a faith community to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Palm Sunday – Year B

A reading from the holy Gospel according to

Mark (11:1-10)

When they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage

and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives,

Jesus sent two of his disciples, and said to them,

‘Go into the village opposite you,

and immediately as you enter it you will find a

colt tied, on which no one has ever sat;

untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you,

“Why are you doing this?” say,

“The Lord has need of itand will send it back here

immediately”’.

And they went away, and found a colt tied at the

door out in the open street; and they untied it.

And those who stood there said to them,

‘What are you doing, untying the colt?’

And they told them what Jesus had said;

and they let them go.

And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw

their garments on it; and he sat upon it.

And many spread their garments on the road,

and others spread leafy branches

which they had cut from the fields.

And those who went before and those who followed

cried out, ‘Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is

coming!

Hosanna in the highest!’

LEARNING AND TEACHING

ASSESSMENT PORTFOLIOS Today you will receive your child’s Assessment Portfolio containing samples of work completed during

Term 1.

We, the staff at Holy Eucharist recognise that in order for our students to be successful in school, they need the support and guidance from both the home and the school community. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education.

Therefore, we ask for your co-operation and support by looking carefully at the Assessment Portfolio

with your child.

Encourage them to talk about what they were required to do for each piece.

Discuss what they have achieved. If there are areas which need improvement, discuss with your child what they could do to improve.

As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities.

This Assessment Portfolio contains: ● Term 1 - Topic outline sheet. This provides the parent/guardian with a summary of what has been covered

during this term in all curriculum areas. The topic outline went home at the beginning of this term (inside the portfolio) and you were invited to sign it and return it to school inside the Portfolio.

● Work samples. These were collected by the teacher as evidence of what has been taught during term 1. These samples

support what has been documented in the topic outline. The work samples have been corrected by the teacher and have relevant comments to support what your child has achieved.

● The teachers have a put a lot of effort and have worked extremely hard to put these Assessment Portfolios together. You (the parent/guardian) are encouraged to make comments (on the yellow cover sheet provided) after looking at your child’s work. Please sign the yellow card inside the folder as an indication that you have seen your child’s work.

NAPLAN – My School Website: www.myschool.edu.au

Earlier this month the 2017 NAPLAN testing Data was available for everyone to view on the ‘My School’ website. In 2017, students at Holy Eucharist school achieved ‘high gains’ in literacy and numeracy. An article in ‘The Age’ newspaper stated that Holy Eucharist school had “made the list” of schools for achieving high gains. (The Age, March 7, 2018). We are very proud of our 2017 - Year 3 and Year 5 students and the results they have achieved.

The chart above displays average NAPLAN scores for each area (domain). The coloured bars indicate whether the school's scores are substantially above (in dark green), above (in light green) or close to

(in white). If the school was below the other school’s average scores these would have been indicated in pink/red. Holy Eucharist School achieved substantially above average

growth in comparison to schools with similar students is affirming of the learning and teaching practices that are in place in the school. Our school made above average growth in comparison to all Australian

students. The graphs on the right indicate gains in reading, writing and numeracy. Our school’s scores are shown in maroon. Average

achievement of students in schools with similar students (statistically similar schools) are indicated in blue and the average achievement of students in all Australian schools are in black.

As you can see from the graphs, students from Holy Eucharist reported gains in reading, writing and numeracy. By the time our students reach Grade 5 they make much higher gains than all schools.
