What a privilege it is to visit our C2 Clubs! Helen and I are seeing so many good people doing so many good things for other Aussies, not because they have to but because they choose to – which I guess is what being a Lion is all about. We have been to exactly 20 Clubs so far and it will not surprise you to know that exactlyl 20 have a bucketful of good things going for them as they each do a bucketful of good things for their communities as they discharge our motto We Serve. Have you booked in for the Wirrina Convention? You’d better hurry as space is fast filling up with Aussie International President Barry Palmer in attendance as well as Australian National Council Chairman Gary Parker. Friday night begins with a FREE sausage sizzle before the formal opening by State Shadow Treasurer the Hon. Iain Evans and concludes after the Remembrance Ceremony with an informal reception. Learn about Barry Palmer’s theme “Follow Your Dream” from the horse’s mouth. Barry will not only be the Keynote Speaker once on Saturday but again on Sunday. He and Anne have come a long way to our Convention, so we intend to make them both work whilst they are here. So, on Saturday there will be a number of ‘round table’ (or small ‘group’) forums on a wide range of topics, from Leos to Skin Cancer, from Lionesses to Service ideas, from Follow Your Dream to Finding New Members, each chaired by one or more knowledgeable Lions, Leos or Lionesses- starting with Barry and Anne Palmer and Council Chairman Gary Parker. YOU select which one to sit in on, YOU ask whatever questions you want. Every fifteen minutes, the presenters will move to another table, taking their topic with them. The Gala Banquet on Saturday night will feature Bush Band Hard Yakka (strictly volume controlled!) and renowned - and very funny - Bush Poet Bob Magor. Remember the homosexual bull, or the spider caught on the velcro? Well, his latest book of poems is called Cops Crocs and Leopard Skin Jocks. Don’t miss it – see you there!

Around the Clubs Gambier City The past few months have seen Gambier City Lions continue their catering within the community, their activities and their donations. Catering has been held at Bunnings (BBQ and cakes), firewood has been cut and delivered to under privileged people and donations made to Gordon Education Centre and Australian Red Cross. Gordon Education Centre benefitted from $300 towards a camp for eight students with disabilities to support their history knowledge and life skills. The camp to Ballarat is the first such excursion for some of the students and they are very excited! Gambier City Lions has supported the school in the past with a breakfast program and donations towards other camps and excursions for disadvantaged students. The Australian Red Cross SE Transport benefitted from $500 towards excursions for elderly and disadvantaged clients in the community who are isolated and socially excluded. The Red Cross initiative came from a very successful Lions and Lioness Seniors Day that was conducted in the South East at the end of last year. Pictured are Treasurer Peter Mitchell presenting a cheque to Gordon Education Centre student and teacher and Fundraising Chair Trevor Bowden presenting a donation to Australian Red Cross representative Raelene Monger.

Mount Gambier Year 5 Mad Minute Public Speaking Competition

(Media release – The Border Watch)

On Tuesday afternoon the Grand Challenge of the Year 5 Lions Mad Minute competition was conducted at the Garry Costello Performing Arts Centre – Mount Gambier High School. 24 student finalists from the eight participating Primary Schools & Colleges presented their impromptu 1 minute speech in front of an appreciative audience numbering

around 100. Students were required to select a challenge or super challenge topic and speak for one minute. Schools and Colleges represented were, Allendale East Area School, Compton Primary, Glenburnie Primary, Mount Gambier North Primary, Reidy Park Primary, St. Martin’s Lutheran College, Tenison Woods College and Yahl Primary. Lions Mad Minute is an impromptu speaking competition aimed at year five students. It was designed by the Lions Club of Mt Gambier after extensive consultation with Teachers and other Educational Leaders. Year five was chosen as this helps prepare students for Public Speaking at school level and in competitions between schools in year six and then junior debating in year seven. Year five students participating in Lions Mad Minute draw a Challenge or a Super Challenge topic from a pre prepared list designed for their age group' after having the topic read aloud immediately commence to talk for one minute. Judges provided by Lions use a pro-forma to rate students in categories including appearance, content, language and gestures. The original concept was trailed in three schools in 2012, then after debriefing modified and expanded in 2013 to include nearly three hundred students in twelve classes across eight schools. At the school level each participating student receives a participation certificate, the class Teacher chooses students for five merit categories, presenting certificates for best opening, best close, most expressive, most humorous and most entertaining. The Lions judges choose the three best overall performers presenting them with medals and a modest cash prize. The school winners then face off against each other in a Grand Challenge. The format is the same; there is a perpetual shield and more substantial prizes for the three winners. Finally the three Grand Challenge winners are invited to a Lions Club Dinner Meeting so all members can hear of their experience and celebrate their success. The intention is to slowly expand Lions Mad Minute to make the opportunity available to all schools in the region and recruit other Lions Clubs and Lioness Clubs to assist in the running of the event. There are limited opportunities for schools to participate in a competition of this nature and develop such a fundamental skill. Lions proudly invest in this opportunity for our future Leaders. Judges on the day were Lions Rory McEwen, Project Chairman and Club President Trevor Fulton. A very high standard of competition ensued, with very few points separating the participants. The final adjudication awarded first prize to Jamison Sneath of the Allendale East Area School for his speech, ‘Dogs are better than Cats’.

The third prize was awarded to Keryl Ousey of the Glenburnie Primary School for her ‘Delicious Meals’ address. Mr David Chadwick – Limestone Coast Regional Director of the Department of Education and Child Development, congratulated all participants for their excellent speeches. Furthermore, he outlined the importance of public speaking skills for the future development of the students. He went on to recognise the Lions Club of Mount Gambier for their initiative in convening the competition. Mr Chadwick presented the Lions Mad Minute participation certificates to the twenty four finalists. Mr Chadwick then presented the first, second and third placed students with their awards. In addition, the Allendale East Area School finalist received the perpetual trophy for the competition. In conclusion, Project Chairman Rory McEwen thanked Mr Chadwick, teachers and students for making the competition possible and advised that the plan is to enlarge the event next year involving more schools and give additional school students the opportunity to be involved. Rory thanked Mrs Merry Dickens for her major contribution to convening the competition.

Edwardstown A Small Machine to save Small Lives The members of the Edwardstown Lions Club were challenged recently following the sudden death of the infant daughter of a Club Member at the Adelaide Women and Children’s Hospital. It was determined that oxygen levels in the new-born were not at the levels expected which led to heart issues and eventual death. Although this is not a common problem, screening can also identify other issues that may respond well to timely medical intervention. Until recently, regular testing of all new- born babies has not been a practice in Australian maternity units. In conjunction with the Neonatal Medicine Team at the W & CH, four Nellcor Handheld pulse oximeter machines (OxiMax N-65) were purchased and donated by the Club to the Hospital at a ceremony on

Monday 1st

July. The portability of the machines enables them to be taken to the birth, not the babies to the machines. Dr Chad Andersen, Medical Unit Head, thanked the Club for the donation and says that the medical team “are in the process of rolling out the Oximetry Screening Program for babies delivered in our Centre.” He hopes that the template for the program will be used to test all babies born in the State. The challenge to Lions is to provide the machines to all hospitals with maternity units in their Club’s district. Expensive? - around $1100 for each machine. – a greedy dessert

90g/3.18 ozs butter

180g/6.36 ozs white chocolate

45g/1.59 ozs dark chocolate

2 eggs

40g/ 1/4 cup plain all purpose flour (or you can use chestnut flour to make it gluten free) 1-

2 tablespoons red colouring essence

1/2 cup chopped, toasted macadamia nuts (be sure to toast these first)

1/4 cup white chocolate chips

For cream cheese icing – DIDN’T use this

125g/4ozs cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup icing or powdered sugar

1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of the lemon zest

The colour if you choose not to add the red food colouring

1. Preheat oven to 175C/347F. Line a loaf tin with parchment. In a saucepan, melt the butter and first lot of

white and dark chocolate. Remove from heat and allow to cool for about 5 minutes. Beat in eggs one at a

time incorporating well and then flour, red colouring essence and vanilla.

2. Then gently stir in the toasted macadamia nuts and white chocolate chips and pour into the prepared tin.

Bake for 25 minutes and then allow to rest in the tin as it is very gooey and needs time to set.

The colour if you do add the red food colouring 3. Highly optional I believe - Meanwhile, make the cream cheese icing. In a bowl, beat the cream cheese

and butter and add sifted icing sugar gradually. Add lemon juice and mix well. Spread the frosting on top

of brownies once cooled.

Letters to Father Christmas “Father Christmas has appointed all Australian Lions Clubs as his helpers” Children or their parents are invited to write a letter addressed to Father Christmas care of the local Lions Club. This can be done

through the local primary schools with the assistance of teachers. The letters are collected and utilising one of the ten non-

committal letters, the club addresses the reply and returns to the school. Promote this using the voucher style booklet, where a

small donation is requested, in the workplace, on club projects or where members of the public are involved.

Forward planning – start thinking about this now and appoint a project chairperson. The letters are designed to meet the needs

of whether the letter is written by a child, parent or grandparent. This project has Minimum Costs & Maximum Rewards.

A Word from Barry

The goals you set must be challenging. At the same time, it should be realistic and attainable. It should be

challenging enough to make you stretch, but not so far that you

break.

LCI is making plans for an exciting 97th Lions Clubs Annual International

Convention from July 4– 8, 2014 in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and we

enthusiastically invite you to join the celebration. Toronto, Canada’s most cosmopolitan city, is situated on beautiful Lake

Ontario and is one of the most dynamic, culturally diverse and vibrant places on earth. Lions will find an abundance of vibrant

nightlife, stunning architecture, great museums, wonderful vintage stores, luxury shops and everything in between. Discover and

experience a world of arts, culture, and energy around every corner in a friendly atmosphere that welcomes everyone. Toronto

is expecting you!

Multiple District

The recent MDGMT workshop held in Melbourne was a great success with coordinators attending from

all over Australia. Key note speakers included PDG Bob Radford GMT National Coordinator, PDG Tim

Irvine GLT National Coordinator, PDG John Muller and PDG Robert Kann GMT New Club Development

Consultants, Ann Eldridge 50/50 Pathway Coordinator and Lou Sedivy Youth Membership Conversion

Officer. All aspects of membership recruitment and development were discussed with a concentrated

emphasis on more women and families in Lions. I also had the opportunity to address the MD Leos Outreach committee

meeting and further develop relations in that area.

District 50/50 Pathway Workshop

The first MD GMT 50/50 Pathway workshop for District 201 C2 was hosted by the Lions club of Hahndorf on Sunday 18th

August.

The course was delivered by facilitator Ann Eldridge and focussed on the importance of a greater inclusion of women and

families within Lions. 52% of the Australian population are women yet they comprise only 26% of our total membership, so

there is much work to be done. The workshop also explored the importance of accurately assessing community needs and what

qualities make for the ideal club. A healthy turnout of 30 Lions from clubs across the district contributed to a spirited debate

which I’m sure will result in a renewed vigour for all clubs involved. A Further series of workshops will be run around the district

throughout the coming year.

Lions Club of Millicent

The Lions Club of Millicent acknowledges with deep sadness the death of our last surviving Charter Member Lion Ron Lane.

Members offer our sincerest condolences to Lions Lady Ellie and his son Lion Peter. The Lions club of Naracoorte also offer their

deepest sympathy to Lions Lady Ellie, Lion Peter, Tony and Vicki for the loss of your husband and father...love to you all.

Publicity Hints Spread the News: Lions Press Releases

The more your community knows about your club’s local volunteer opportunities, activities and

achievements, the more of an impact you can make on people’s lives. Increase awareness and

recruit new members to your club by submitting press releases to your local newspapers.

Not sure how to write a press release that will garner the attention your club deserves? Lions

Clubs International provides sample news releases on the LCI website. Formatted in Microsoft

Generous Commitment to LCIF during Convention

In a surprise announcement, Board Appointee and Past District Governor Aruna Oswal and her husband, Lion Abhey Oswal, committed US$5 million to Lions Clubs International Foundation on stage during the annual Lions Clubs International Convention. "My husband has always supported me...he wanted to pledge something for society, for humanitarian causes. So he pledged US$5 million to be spread globally," said PDG Oswal of India. "I feel this is the best Foundation. I have seen it working...I have felt it with my heart and soul. That is why I am so passionate about LCIF, because I have seen the success stories. Today, it was a very big deal for all of us. Let us try to make this world a beautiful world and let us create a difference in society." In addition to this incredible commitment, Lions in attendance generously made donations at the Foundation booth. LCIF relies on the generosity of individuals to carry out worldwide efforts to restore sight, provide disaster relief, support youth and address humanitarian needs. Thank you for your support.

Lions and Special Olympics: Partners in Unity

LCIF announced a five-year expansion of the partnership with Special Olympics during the 96th Lions Clubs International Convention in Germany. Through Opening Eyes, Lions already help provide vision screenings and eyeglasses to Special Olympic athletes. Now, Lions and LCIF will help create leadership opportunities for Special Olympics athletes, increase the health work of Special Olympics, conduct outreach to families for additional support and reach more young people through inclusive sports and advocacy programs.

"Engaging Our Youth" in August This month's Global Service Action campaign encourages Lions to involve the community's youth in service activities. By working

with young people to develop and lead projects, they can gain valuable skills that help them achieve their dreams. Projects that

engage our youth include environmental cleanups, book drives, assembling care packages for homeless shelters, assisting at

special needs camps, after-school tutoring and more. Visit the Engaging Our Youth page for more ideas and resources.

What's New in the Leadership Resource Center

If you haven't visited the Leadership Resource Center (LRC) lately, now is the time to do so. In addition to the many existing resources, the new 2013 Club Secretary and Club Treasurer Webinar materials are now posted! You can view the actual recordings, as well as download the slide presentations, participant workbooks and answers to questions asked during the webinars. You can also download the newly revised Nurturing New Clubs presentation that can be adapted for your needs. Visit the LRC today for these valuable new materials.

Make Tree Planting and the Environment Your Responsibility

As a part of the 2013-14 Presidential Theme "Follow Your Dream," International President Barry Palmer is encouraging all Lions to focus on the three R's: Responsibility, Reach and Recognition. Take responsibility for your environment by planting trees in your area. Tree planting projects are a great way to get the entire community involved in service that makes a real impact. Visit the Tree Planting Projects page for more resources, and see our Flickr set for the 2011-12 Tree Planting Campaign, during which Lions reported planting over 15 million trees.
