A medieval poet once described rainfall as sweet showers that pierce the drought and bathe
every root in its liquor. Picture bathing a garden in this
nectar: Instead of letting it run into the street and sewer, you capture it in barrels to use. This practice, known as “rainwater harvesting,” is catching on.
“There are a number of reasons to partake in rainwater harvesting, al-
though the most significant benefit is saving water,” Arnie Thompson, Acterra Watershed Project program director, said.
Rainwater can be used for every-thing from watering the lawn to toi-let flushing and showering.
“In Palo Alto, we use high-qual-ity drinking water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir for purposes of irrigation. If you use the water from harvesting, then you’re saving water that would normally come from the
domestic water supply.”And, it reduces pollutants in the
storm-drain system.Rainwater falling on impervious
surfaces such as roofs, driveways and sidewalks slides off along with pollutants and goes into the storm-drain system, ending up in local creeks and ultimately in the San Francisco Bay.
Harvesting captures and cleanses the water running off the roof and into a leaf-eater and a flush diverter.
Water can then be used for home irrigation, although one shouldn’t drink it unless properly treated, Thompson advised.
Harvesting can also reduce the strain on the drain system, poten-tially reducing flood risk.
Strain usually occurs after a big storm, during which the drain sys-tem is under pressure because it is taking in the city’s vast amount of

rainwater and funneling it into local creeks.
“Harvesting reduces the strain by creating more closed-group sytems,” Hannah Rich, co-leader for the wa-ter sub-group of Students for a Sus-tainable Stanford, said.
Harvesting allows water to evenly and gently seep into the soil return-ing to nature rather than going rap-idly into the drain system, she said.
However, harvesting has to be implemented on a large scale to even marginally reduce flood risk, Thompson said.
To encourage harvesting, the city of Palo Alto gives residents a storm drain rebate of $50 per rain barrel. Details are available on the city of Palo Alto’s website, www.cityof-paloalto.org.
The process of catching rainwater is simple: Rain falls on the roof and is caught in the roof’s gutter, then goes through a hose to intercon-nected rain barrels.
The most essential materials needed to create the system are barrels (40-60 gallons), plumbing fittings, a first-flush diverter and a garden-hose fitting. Cutting and drilling will also be required so one
needs a hacksaw, wrench and a drill. A more comprehensive list of parts can be found online or by contacting the city of Palo Alto’s Public Works Division at 650-329-2151.
Parts can be purchased at Orchard Supply or Home Depot. Rain barrels can be found locally at Palo Alto Ace Hardware via special order or on Craigslist.
A household can have any num-ber of rain barrels depending on how big the backyard is, how much water one wants to collect and how one wants to use it.
“One barrel holds approximately 55 gallons, which can possibly be filled up after one good rain. For every 1,000 square feet of roof, for every 1 inch of rainfall, we get 600 gallons of water,” Thompson said. Most residents opt for up to seven barrels, Thompson said.
However, to meet all the domes-tic water-supply needs for a home, an annual water budget needs to be calculated and a system installed. Thompson suggested working with a consultant, such as a plumbing contractor, if interested in installa-tion.
Harvesting doesn’t require great expertise to undertake, but it does require a little research. There are self-guides online or experienced harvesters, such as Brad Daniel from RainSavers (Saratoga) or Thompson, can come in and do the project for you.
Another option would be to attend a rainwater-harvesting workshop, which Thompson offers at least twice a year. Workshops are help-ful in visualizing the process and learning some skills such as cutting gutters.
Thompson’s last workshop in January in the Palo Alto home of Richard Raffals, Acterra volunteer, drew adults and children alike.
“My volunteering is environmen-tally based, so I like when I find new ways to conserve power and water, and lower the carbon output,” Raf-fals said.
Linda F., Palo Alto resident, brought her son Jacob and friends to observe. Jacob was attending to learn about the environment, which was an educational requirement at his school.
“Rainwater harvesting seemed interesting, different and I thought my son could learn a good deal from it. At home we tell our children to pay attention to water usage and it’s good to have them start thinking about other ways to conserve at an early age,” Linda said.

“Give fools their gold, and knaves their power; let fortune’s bubbles rise and fall; who sows a field, or trains a flower, or plants a tree, is more than all.”
— John Greenleaf Whittier
One positive outcome of our manic economic situ-ation is that we are forced
to look for both simple pleasures and simple solutions in our lives. I personally feel that our ever-in-creasing green-lifestyle choices are a result of our need to simpli-fy. The zero-energy, low-carbon footprint, and money-saving re-sult of green lifestyles are sim-ply a wonderful and sometimes unexpected outcome.
It is this need for simplic-ity that I think has also renewed the trend of “green walls.” Our lifestyles are more urban-centric than ever before. Green walls can provide the need for beauti-ful vegetation that humans crave and help to camouflage the nois-ier and more polluted aspects of urban living. The new green wall is moving past the ivy-covered green facades of yesterday to find a plethora of options with living
walls. The options for living walls fall
into three types: loose mediums, mat mediums and structural me-diums. The loose mediums are set in a “shelf” system or “soil bag” where the soil is set into the shelf or bag and then stuffed into a hole on the building. These sys-tems will require regular pruning or even replacement as the roots will outgrow the system due to the smaller planting area of the “hole” and the greater possibil-ity of being blown away by high winds and rain.
Another option is the “mat” system that can be either coir fiber or felt pockets. There is a limited lifespan of about three to five years with this system as the roots can become too dense in the fiber to allow proper water pen-etration. This system does allow the most flexibility as you can hang small or large pockets and the entire planting can be framed to be shown off as the work of art it is. This medium is also good for both interior and exterior ap-plications.
Finally, there is a “structural” type of medium. This is where
the plant is set into a “block” and can be manu-fac t u re d into any s h a p e . This can be the most ex-
pensive option, but will also last the longest as it can allow for the most variation of water needs and can be handled more easily for maintenance and replacement.
Green walls also make good use of available vertical surface areas. Not only will this allow for a more beautiful building, but with proper preparation, you will save on the painting and mainte-nance of the building’s exterior. Green walls can also help to re-duce the overall temperature of buildings thereby decreasing the amount of energy required to cool them.
The walls can also be a way to reuse water. The plants can ab-sorb the dissolved nutrients and purify slightly polluted water if installed by way of a gray-water
system. This point is especially helpful in areas such as the Bay Area where the circulating water on a vertical wall is less likely to evaporate than in traditionally placed gardens.
It is all of these reasons com-bined that helped Vox Design Group Inc. (a green design/build firm) to decide on a living wall for its new exterior sign on Castro Street. Not only does the runoff from the installed drip system water the native plants at the front of the building, but the wall of succulent-stuffed felt pocket softens the street noise from Cas-tro Street.
It is such a hit with people walk-ing by that they have stopped into Vox’s office to simply say how much they enjoy the sign. Thank goodness for the simple pleasures in life.
