Yoga instructor, Adria Ray, wishes you a healthy, happy 2016, and shares these yogic tips for the new year:

• Take a deep breath. When you feel rushed or overwhelmed, take a minute or two to stop and notice your breath. Is it shallow (mostly moving in the upper chest) or rapid? If so, gradually slow down your breath cycle by deepening your inhale. You may notice that your exhale will gradually lengthen as well. Even a few minutes of deep breathing can promote relaxation in the body. Interesting tidbit: rapid breathing is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, often as a function of the "fight or flight" response when we're feeling stressed. In contrast, slow, deep breathing can actually stimulate the opposing parasympathetic reaction, allowing us to move out of "fight or flight" and into a more calm state-of-being.

• Resolve to be kind to yourself this year. We often resolve to make big changes in the New Year. This year, consider taking a gentler approach: resolve to practice non-judgment and kindness towards yourself. Find and acknowledge your own strength, beauty, and self-worth. The foundation of a yoga practice "isn't about trying to throw ourselves away and become something better. It's about befriending who we are already."

• Decompress. We are often overstimulated with screens, sounds, lights, and action all around. Find a quiet space and turn off your phone and limit other distractions. Gaze out of a window or at a candle flame or sit or walk outdoors. Take a series of deep breathes. Give yourself the gift of slowing down.
