arts and first hand involvement with music making.
Were it not for funds supplied from the private sector, many public school music programs would cease to
exist at all. Through your great efforts in selling tickets, because of businesses and individuals that purchase
ads in our programs and those who donate services and gifts for our silent auctions, and the generous
donations of our friends and supporters, we are able to accommodate grant requests from South Bay public
schools, offer grants to our three local colleges to help supply their needs, give school children the
opportunity to hear live concerts by professional artists and through the generous donations of our Patrons,
award scholarships to outstanding college music students. All our recipients are extremely grateful for the
help we are providing. Let’s keep it up as we celebrate the success of February’s Musical Mosaic and rev up
for Musica Primavera coming on May 12.

President’s Message
Another marvelous Musical Mosaic is
now behind us and we are looking forward
to our next exciting fund raiser: Musica
Primavera. These outstanding events are
great sources of revenue for our chapter by
presenting high quality music to the
community which showcase accomplished
artists. The funds that come in are so
dearly needed by the projects we support.
Music programs continue to be eliminated
through the ever increasing cuts to public
education; college students are struggling
in their efforts to pursue their education
amid higher tuition and other cost of living
increases; schools at all levels suffer from
deficiencies in equipment, insufficient
staffing, overburdened teachers; students
are deprived of adequate exposure to the

President’s message cont.
Before we look entirely to our future events,
we must once again express our deep and
sincere appreciation to Jan Bunker for the
excellent work she has done as chair of
Musical Mosaic. A virtual bouquet of red
roses we gratefully extend to you, Jan! Jan’s
husband, Gordon, also deserves huge praise
and thanks for his assistance particularly with
the flyers, mailing and programs. Jan will be
stepping down as chair and therefore we will
be searching for someone who is willing to
take on this very important position.
However, true to her style, Jan is busily
preparing descriptions and directions for
accomplishing each of the tasks and is
suggesting additional sub-chairs for some of
them, so the overall job will not be as large.
Please contact me if you would like to be on
the team, continuing the tradition of great
Musical Mosaics.
Our Nominating Committee is at work to
prepare a slate of officers for next year.
Please try to say “Yes!” when you are invited
to assume a role of leadership. I can assure
you that it is a pleasure to serve on the board
and to work with some of the most dedicated,
dear people to be found anywhere!
Thanks to all of you for your prayers and
thoughts in support of Maurice. His wife,
Rosemary, is grateful to report that he has
been released from the hospital and is home
resting and recovering amazingly well. He is
not ready to receive visitors yet, but evidently
has re-gained his humor and spunk. We’ll be
so happy when he is able to resume his
normal activities.
My deep appreciation to each of you for your
efforts in living and promoting music,
friendship and harmony!
Darlene
Ole! Musica Primavera is just around
the corner. Our theme this year is centered
on Spanish food, decor and wines. We
will be featuring a Flamenco guitarist and
dancer. First of all, make sure the date (May
12th
) is on your calendar. Then be thinking
about how you could help out. Here are
some suggestions.
For decor we are looking for
a) wrought iron candle holders or other
items,
b) fringed shawls and scarves
c) Brightly colored tiles or table cloths and
d) items that could be used to give a
Spanish Flair.
We will need help with food preparation,
serving and set up and clean up. Contact
Pat Maki for more information on how you
might help out.
We need good items for the Silent Auction.
Consumables seem to be more in favor than
items to take home (excepting wine,
maybe). Contact Lenita if you have
anything like a condo for a weekend, tickets
for some event, gift baskets or items that
you know have sold well in the past. We
will take most items but those mentioned
above seem to be more favored. Consider
offering a service of some kind.
We hope to continue our success from past
years and with your help we will do it.
Lenita McCallum and Pat Maki,
co-chairs
