The Break

2014

Silk velvet which has been painted, dyed, and

burnt-out (devor) by the artist, bamboo

backscratcher, crack pipes, iron hooks,

parquet flooring, brass lamp, shine-thru

90 x 80 x 36 in.

Dyed silk velvet with burned out fauna patterns

are stabbed to the wall with crack pipes and

hung from iron hooks. Velvets attach to a

parquet floored platform with bamboo

backscratchers. The composition is lit from

below with a built-in brass lamp.

Sag Harbor shells in dime bags stapled onto

silk velvet which has been painted, dyed, and

burnt-out (devor) by the artist, sole rubber on

foam, iron hooks, backscratcher, brass lamp,

earring hooks, patchouli perfume, one-hitter

pipe, shine-thru & glow & burns

84 x 60 x 30 in.

Dyed silk velvet with burned out patterns hung

from iron hooks and drape down to a rubber

platform which has black candle wax residue

on it. Seashells from Sag Harbor in dimebags

are stapled to the back side of the material.

The composition is lit from below with a built-in

porcelain lamp.

The Cape Act

2013

Silk velvet, dye, marble, string

The Cape Act uses the gesture of a cape.An abstract geometric drawing of James

Brown / Al Sharpton's hair is acid burned

into velvet and suspended from the ceiling

weighted down by marble. The shine-thru

is of the pompadour drawing.

drumsticks, earring hooks, wood

A set of broken drumsticks shows evidence

of wear and is retired to a trophy in a wood

base, draped in velvet that has been

burned out, dyed, and painted. and held up

by earring hooks.

Kemet Camp, Sag Harbor

2013

Silk velvet, dye, pigment, metal plate,

upholstery tacks, seashells from Sag Harbor in

dime bags

50 in x 25 in x 1 in

Two layers of silk velvet are burned out with a

pattern, dyed, painted, and are hung on thewall with upholstery tacks. In between the two

layers are seashells and a reflective metal

plate which is hung at viewers approximate

face height. Burn marks and layers of color are

apparent on the iridescent velvet surface.

Righteous

2013

Silk velvet, brass, wood, ceramic prayer hands

100 in x 48 in x 60 in

A white silk velvet panel hung from the wall

falls onto a parquet wood floor, resting on the

floor in front of two brass sheets. White solid

velvet is burned out in a tribal tattoo patternwhich, when repeated, creates a strange floral.

The parquet flooring grounds this sculpture in

reference to a space, and the velvet is

anchored at one corner by a set of ceramic

prayer hands.

Sweet Grace church fan

Custom church fans used as part of "Sweet

Grace" performance, 2nd edition as used

during VOLTA NY 2014 performance

Bishop Charles Manuel "Sweet Daddy" Grace

was James Brown's childhood idol and the

original charismatic prosperity preacher. This

performance is a silent slow strut dedicated to

Daddy Grace's spirit- his fortitude, focus, and

ingenuity in the name of a religious body that

welcomed all people. This performance was anapparition of Grace, an homage and a small

contribution to a new way of seeing this

historical figure and his emulators.

Before and during the performance, ushers

handed out custom church fan programs.

Bishop Charles Manuel "Sweet Daddy" Grace

Flo Jo World Record Nails

2012

2000 acrylic fake fingernails, nail polish,

rhinestones, metal, wood

22 in x 60 in x 40 in

Sculpture made from 2000 artist-made replica

acrylic fingernails in the shape of an ascending

200m running course. Fingernails wereindividually hand painted after the manicure

that Florence Griffith-Joyner wore during the

1988 Olympics, when she set the 200 m world

record. Sculpture is 200m track at 1:100 scale.

Flo Jo World Record Nails Manicure Boxed

Set

2012

acrylic fake fingernails, paper - edition of 10

Own a replica set of the manicure that

Florence Griffith-Joyner wore during the 1988

Olympics, when she set the 200 m world

record. Fingernails are hand-painted in artist-

designed package.

tumbleweaves that form from lost hairextensions and clippings. In the series,
