Os castros eran as primitivas aldeas nas que habitaban os nosos antepasados entre os séculos IX a.C. e III d.C. Durante este longo período tivo lugar unha certa evolución pero, a grandes rasgos, tratábase de construcións situadas en lugares elevados, constituídas por unha serie variable de muros defensivos que protexían no seu interior ás vivendas, normalmente de estrutura circular.
Neste caso, pola ladeira oeste corre o río coñecido como “Rego de Lago”. O castro ten un perfil trapezoidal, e tres aneis de defensa, perfilados, sobre todo, nas fachadas leste e oeste que deixan entre sí espazos aterrazados, de anchura variable. A entrada, orientada cara o norte atravesa os tres recintos, o segundo dos cais se ve reforzado na súa muralla, na parte dereita, por un novo lenzo de muralla.Na actualidade, a parte leste do recinto central está cuberta de toxos e o resto do castro está a prado, percibindose claramente as fortificacións.O castro atópase no monte máis alto de Mazaricos. Desde este punto podese divisar unha boa parte do territorio: A Picota, capital do Concello, o monte Ruña, o encoro da Fervenza, …

The fortified settlements were small primitive villages that our ancestors lived in between the 9th century BC and the 3rd century AD. Throughout this long period, these constructions continued to evolve, but they were principally located in high places and were made up of a varying number of defensive walls that protected their homes, which normally had a circular structure, inside the walls.
The Fortified Settlement of Monte Aro is located inside the highest mountain in this municipality. From the settlement, it is possible to see a large part of the Mazaricos territory: from here, we can see A Picota, the capital of the region; Mount Ruña, the second largest mountain in the municipality; Encoro da Fervenza and the adventure sport complex Naturmaz.
The river known as "Rego de Lago" runs on the settlement´s east side. It has a trapezoidal shape and has three defence rings that are outlined, above all, in the east and west facades that leave variable width, terraced space between them.
