Dear Readers,

Datwyler’s market environment is changing rapidly. The Asian high-rise building boom is prompting the major lift companies to follow the trend and locate their main areas of activity in this region. European suppliers have to follow suit, and at the same time hold their own against Asian competitors. Even inside Europe wage-intensive jobs like cable assembly are increasingly being relocated to countries with lower wage costs, mainly in the east. The weak euro is giving additional impetus to both trends. The cost pressure on production activities remaining in Switzerland has increased massively.

Datwyler Cabling Solutions has reacted quickly and proactively to the changing underlying conditions: lift cable production has been relocated to China, cable assembly to Eastern Europe, the Swiss parent company has been completely redesigned and the whole orga-nisation has been streamlined. At the Altdorf site these measures have unfortunately been accompanied by significant staff reductions. On the other hand, over the next three years Datwyler will be investing around 40 million Swiss francs in buildings, plant and machinery here. Among other things Altdorf is developing into a top plant designed and equipped for state-of-the art production of copper and fibre optic data cables and safety cables.

In recent months we have been gearing our sales orga-nisation to the expanding worldwide (turnkey) project business. Back in February 2011 it was reinforced by a new affiliate in Dubai, designed as a sales/engineering and logistics hub for the Middle Eastern and North African region.

Expanding our international presence, investment in Altdorf cable production

As you can see from this edition of our “Panorama Cabling Solutions” magazine, we are now chalking up more and more successful international projects. This is a clear sign that we are going in the right strategic direction.

To round off our modernisation the Datwyler Group has updated and standardised its worldwide image in time for spring. The powerful new logo – just Datwyler without the rest of the name – and the red, petrol, grey and white colour combinations are definitely the most striking. We have adopted the logo as well, but for the meantime the company names and addresses remain unchanged.

I hope, dear Readers, that you will get a positive sense of the zest and innovation with which we are driving our business forward. With this in mind I wish you an enjoyable read.

Yours sincerely

New network for 100 embassies

In 2009 Datwyler was commissioned to plan and im-plement the passive IT networks in over 100 embassies, consulates and UN missions of an Arabian Gulf state. Thanks to professional project management and its international partner network, Datwyler was able to hand the new networks over in December 2010.

As a turnkey supplier of electrical and communications technology infrastructures, Datwyler Cabling Solutions carries out worldwide on-site analysis, draws up pro-posals for infrastructure design, delivers the requisite system solutions and – in close collaboration with local partners – takes on the installation, documentation and maintenance of the new systems. The company also provides these services for multisite projects.

It is two years since Datwyler was awarded the contract for a mammoth multisite project, that of equipping over 100 of a Gulf state´s embassies, consulates and UN missions with new passive IT networks. The client was the state´s Foreign Ministry. The Foreign Minister appointed an overall project manager of the active and passive IT network including new software, and he in turn awarded the contract to a local subcontractor who brought in Datwyler for the passive IT network.

New network for 100 embassies

Professional project management Datwyler first had to draw up exact targets and specifi-cations in collaboration with the clients – the Ministry, the overall project manager and the subcontractors – and agree a practical course of action with them. The wishes and requirements of the ambassador and the embassy staff at all the individual sites then had to be taken into consideration and implemented – in each case after obtaining the Foreign Ministry’s consent – with the aid of around 50 local installation firms. At a later stage of the work some adjustments were also made by the Ministry and the subcontractor. The in-stallation involved complying with the strictly limited access times and working hours stipulated partly by the Ministry, partly by the embassies themselves.

Installation encompassed the passive IT networks including the requisite racks and connections as well as raised floors in the server rooms. The embassies are frequent-ly housed in luxurious buildings or buildings of historical importance, so the installation had to be careful-ly coordinated with the interior. For example, in many places the cables had to be run behind wall panel-ling and connected to matching flat flush-mounted sockets. Local conditions sometimes required the Datwyler teams to carry out other building and installation work such as running power lines from the transformers beside the street to the racks, retrofitting the earth system and occasional interior finishing.

Thanks to professional project management, a struc-tured approach and the delivery of standardised products by Datwyler, one after another over 100 sites were cabled with increasing rapidity from December 2009 onwards. A year later the new networks were tested, commissioned and connected to the Foreign Ministry’s worldwide network.

Redundant Class E networkThe unilan® network supplied by Datwyler and made up of Class EA cables and components extends over the full embassy range, on some sites in up to three buildings, allowing all staff members fast access to

the Internet and the Embassy LAN or satellite network (VSAT) from their work stations. At the Ministry’s request the two networks are strictly separate from each other in terms of the hardware and software used, and each is of redundant design.

Today the Foreign Minister of the Gulf state has a standardised IT network with very secure and highly available connections which can be used to access any PC in any embassy. Operation of the passive network has been absolutely stable since start-up. The products and solutions installed use cutting edge technology and give the Ministry a high degree of future security. Even in the short term the stability and reliability of the Datwyler solution should lead to a considerable reduc-tion in maintenance costs. The cabling was set up to be scalable from the outset, moreover, so all subsequent orders and extensions have been carried out quickly and easily to date.

Future-proof infrastructure for new Diesel head office

One motto of Diesel, the world-famous lifestyle brand, is ‘be stupid’. Behind this lies a company which pursues its objectives with great foresight, using the latest technology. An example of this is the new Diesel head office building in the Italian town of Breganze where future-proof, structured cabling from Datwyler has been installed.

Diesel is one of the best-known designers and manu-facturers of jeans, apparel, accessories and perfumes. The company employs around 6000 staff in Europe, Asia and America and achieves a turnover of approxi-mately 1.3 billion Euros. The worldwide Diesel distri-bution network includes 5000 points of sale in over 80 countries, including 400 monobrand stores which are owned by the company.

Market trends are forcing Diesel to invest in advanced technologies all the time. When building the new com-pany headquarters in Breganze, the company therefore decided to install a modern high performance cabling infrastructure which will enable Diesel to cope with the technical challenges of the next 15 to 20 years.

In collaboration with Jacobs Engineering Italy, Diesel‘s IT staff were able to define the technical specifica-tions for the new communication cabling during the planning phase for the new building. They decided

on a structured building cabling system with central distribution and a maximum of five sub-distributors from which all the workplaces could be reached. Diesel wanted there to be at least twice as much connection capability as it currently needs. Each individual line was to be certified for 10 Gigabit per second (10 Gbit/s). The entire infrastructure should offer a high degree of flexibility to allow for possible changes of use and expansion, and at the same time present an elegant design. High requirements were also placed on loa-ding, ventilation and the functional capability of the required racks.

Professional system supplier and integrator Jacobs brought Datwyler on board for project plan-ning. The international Datwyler team provided all the information required about the different technologies available on the market and also suggested a unilan® system solution which would enable Jacobs to meet all Diesel’s expectations, from performance, flexibility and reliability through method of installation to an attractive price.

In this project Datwyler also acted as the system integrator. This was made possible through close cooperation with SAIV, an integration partner which managed coordinated and supervised activities at the construction site.

Future-proof infrastructure for new Diesel head office

Pre-assembled cables – rapid installation Installation itself took place between July 2009 and September 2010 within several narrow time slots. Over ninety racks which had been specially designed for Diesel were installed and cabled in the new Diesel data centre. The 220 fibre optic links used multiple (trunk) cabling which had been cut to length, pre-assembled with LC connectors and measured at the factory, allow-ing plug-and-play installation. For the 640 copper links in the data centre the installers also used pre-assembled multiple cable, each of which consists of six Category 7 S/FTP cables with Category 6A RJ45 connectors at each end. Thanks to the pre-assembled products, installation was comparatively quick. The result is a tailor-made, very tidy and extremely flexible cabling solution.

Around thirty distribution cabinets were constructed for the horizontal cabling. They are connected to the data centre by fibre optic cables. For the infrastructure in the offices around 7000 copper links were used from the sub-distributors to 300 consolidation points, again with Category 7 cables and Cat. 6A RJ45 connectors.

From the outset, Datwyler Cables not only acted as an adviser to Diesel but also provided practical support. For example, during the planning phase, a rack proto-type was tested ‘under extreme conditions’ which led to a number of adaptations and the development of a

tailor-made model. At very short notice, Datwyler also developed a solution for links with high bending radius to enable them to achieve the correct attenuation value for 10 Gbit/s transmission.

Tested quality Diesel’s company headquarters now has a high-end, future-proof infrastructure with a guarantee of quality. Every single piece of multiple cables was supplied with its own acceptance certificate and a manufacturer‘s warranty. After installation, Datwyler and SAIV perfor-med a complete certification so that they could gua-rantee correct installation and expected performance, enabling them to hand over the 20-year unilan® system warranty.

“We would like to thank Datwyler and SAIV for meeting our specifications down to the smallest detail and creating a cabling infrastructure which is tailor-made for Diesel, state-of-the art, will be able to cope with all future challenges and doubtless also looks good. A real masterpiece!”, says Mauro Vettore, Head of Tech-nology & Communication in Diesel‘s IT department.

Clinical Research in Berne:800 links in a minimum of space

Since the end of last year scientists in Berne’s Clinical Research Centre have had a high speed communica-tions network at their disposal. The system solution, which provides a large number of connections in a minimum of space, is from a single source: Datwyler.

The Department for Clinical Research (DCR), an institute of the Medical Faculty at the University of Berne, was commissioned to supply researchers at the Inselspital with the best possible infrastructure. Over 45 independent research groups in almost every field of biomedical research benefit from the products and services provided by the DCR.

This meant that when the Inselspital Foundation deci-ded to replace the existing building on Murtenstrasse with a new building a few years ago, the general contractor appointed, Berner Baumag Generalbau AG, had exacting standards to meet. In addition to maximum possible flexibility in the allocation of space and ecologically sound construction, this in-cluded universal communications cabling designed not only to current technical standards but also for future applications.

Between August 2009 and December 2010 there emerged a compact, aesthetically pleasing building with a flexible space-utilising concept and modern la-boratories. Despite its glass façade the Clinical Research Centre was constructed as a low energy building and is heated by remote heating. A stable, high-performance cabling system from Datwyler was used for data and voice communication (voice over IP). It was installed by the Berne company Elektro Burkhalter AG with electrical engineering consultants CSP Meier AG acting as site manager.

Future-proof solution “The customer wanted universal communications cabling with category 6A cables and correspondingly high-performance RJ45 connection technology which could transmit future 10 gigabit Ethernet applications”,

The new Clinical Research building in Berne.

says Markus Gautschi, Elektro Burkhalter’s Telematics Project Manager. The structured network also had to be easily expandable and come as a complete system solution from one company.

The decision was made to go for unilan® cabling with symmetrical data cables of type uninet® 7702 4P and screened Keystone connection technology from Dat-wyler. The latter is based on RJ45 modules which can be connected without a specialised tool (toolless) and are attached to patch panels and data sockets on the Snap-in principle. The connecting sockets and patch panels are part of the unilan® portfolio as well. “This is a good open system which in our experience is easy to work on and also has a very favourable price-performance

ratio”, stresses the Telematics Project Manager.

800 links in four monthsBetween August and Novem-ber 2010 Elektro Burkhalter’s teams cabled nine floors in the new building, including three basements. Using appro-ximately 30 kilometres of data cable they created around 800 links and lined them up with 500 connecting sockets and around 45 patch panels. All the material was supplied by Heiniger Kabel AG, EDP Net-works Division, in Köniz.

Optoversal® fibre optic cables now run from the server room in the first basement, which at the same time connects to the Inselspital network, into

two floor distributors on the building’s first and fourth floor. From there the copper cabling is routed to the workrooms and laboratories vertically and along the ceilings in a star-shaped configuration. Consolidation points were also created in the labs to access the lab benches. In special laboratory areas the data lines were connected to waterproof sockets with covers.

“We were very pressed for time, and the building has a lot of technology in an extremely small space”, says Markus Gautschi, but thanks to the rapid installation of the Datwyler system solution – sometimes with 30 skilled personnel at the same time –, good coordi- nation with the other domestic and building techno-logy teams, and Heiniger Kabel’s exceptionally high delivery performance, the structured Ethernet network was handed over on time. The system has come into operation gradually since November as equipment has been brought in and installed in the new building.

Since 1991 TWK has been active as a regional ser-vice provider for energy, a water supplier and a bus operator and, from 2000, as an IT and TC outsourcing partner for utilities and waste management firms. Since September 2010 TWK has also been providing companies outside the sector with a broad spectrum of ITC services, among them server hosting and admi-nistration, web and application hosting as well as in-frastructure concepts for networks, Internet and data safety. This was made possible by the construction of “Datacenter4you”, one of Europe’s most modern and secure data centres.

Within six months two autonomous server rooms with around 420 square metres of floor space and a design capacity of 1.6 megawatts were erected on a 1500 square metre building site. These were modular ECB.S-certified Lampertz high security rooms from Rittal. They currently accommodate 14 enclosed rows of racks with a total of 160 server cabinets which are supplied with cooling air – over the year around 80% of it free cooling – by way of a raised floor and cold aisles.

“Throughout the year for around 80 percent of the time the outside air is enough to cool the data centre to a constant 20 degrees Celsius – only then do the compressors come into operation. This way we save so much electricity that we reckon on a Power Usage Effectiveness of under 1.3 at full load”, says Berthold Willig, TWK’s IT Director. Compared with the previous data centre, retained as a backup-site, the IT Director estimates that savings made by the existing systems already amount to around 40 000 euros annually. The waste heat is currently being used to heat the surrounding premises. As capacity increases the heat recovery will benefit a nearby open air heated swimming pool.

48 fibres on one rack unitThe servers are accessed from two separate WAN rooms by redundant fibre optic and copper con-nections (1 gigabit) via the raised floor. In close collaboration with Markus Ryll, responsible for the new network at TWK-IT, on the data centre premises Avalan installed around 14 kilometres of Category 7 uninet® 7080 data cable with RJ45 connectors and 4500 fibre optic connections with the Datwyler BreakOut System (BO System). This fibre optic system is based on compact multiple cables (trunks) with 48 FO mini cables which are prefabricated with LC connectors at both ends. As the external diameter of the trunks is only 1.84 centimetres, in the rack rows each multiple cable in a 1 U distribution panel can be connected to pre-assembled LCD couplings.

Economic solution, rapid installation According to Thomas Freis, Avalan’s Sales Director, the BO System is far more economical and faster to install than other FO systems, particularly compared with in situ splicing. Without the prefabricated BreakOut ca-ble it would have been impossible to fit into the spe-

Security, high availability and energy efficiency: these are the key requirements of TWK Technische Werke Kaiserslautern for its new datacenter. High-speed con-nections are guaranteed by an economical Datwyler ca-bling system, which was installed in only three weeks.

cified time slot of just under three weeks. If nothing else, the fire protection requirements militated in favour of a very thin, light fibre optic solution.

TWK-specific labelling on individual minicables and the common cable sheath allows for simple docu-mentation and clear assignment of the connections in the distribution panels. Cable entries and strain relief in the distribution panel are realised by M25 cable glands. Cable dividers are totally redundant in the BO system. Excess lengths of around 1.5 metres of single fibre cable in the boxes make it easy to replace the FO plug-in connectors during servicing.

At the end of 2010 TWK-IT was still busy moving the servers. This took place online, during routine operation. “This meant that our customers’ applica-tions, including SAP, real-time video, archive systems and online shops, remained available at all times”, explained Berthold Willig. The inventory systems, which are fully mirrored and redundantly operated, now fill six rack rows or around 40 percent of the storage space.

Bertold Willig, IT Director, says that the high capacities of the Datacenter4you form a sound basis for future offerings and functions, including Smart Metering and Fibre to the Home. In view of business trends in the colocation and outsourcing fields, TWK reckons on a ROI of maximum eight years.

Excel I.T. installed a reliable, flexible and robust unilan® cabling solution by Datwyler at the Australian Bank´s new London headquarters.

Westpac Banking Corporation was established in 1817 as Bank of New South Wales and has its headquarters in Sydney. Westpac is Australia‘s leading financial insti-tution with more than 37 000 employees and branches around the globe.

In London the Bank of New South Wales representative office first opened in 1853. Thus, Westpac is the oldest surviving foreign financial institute in the UK. Today the London HQ is situated in Camomile Street near Bishopsgate in the heart of London City. It occupies the first, ground and part of the lower ground floors of the building comprising 1716 square meters.

High-quality network for improved servicesIn summer last year, Westpac looked for a comprehen-sive, modern copper and fibre optic cabling solution for the new headquarters. Following a competitive tender process, Datwyler was successful in securing the opportunity to provide a unilan® cabling system. Westpac‘s strategic priorities are particularly centred

on improving distribution and customer offerings. Therefore it was of paramount importance that the communication network within the London HQ is reliable, flexible and robust.

Westpac Bank counts on Datwyler

The bank appointed Coleman Bennett International (CBI), an experienced full I.T. design and implemen-tation project management consultancy. ”We were impressed by the delivery of product and service offered by Datwyler. Their ability to react to the ever changing demands of the project, helped ensure the project was completed within budget and timescale“, says Dean Moore, CBI.

Easy to work with The unilan® solution consists of 3000 RJ45 ports over three floors, fed from three communications rooms via 100 kilometres of Category 6 copper data cable. For the comms rooms – one of these a small data centre – Datwyler also delivered OM3 multimode fibre optic cables with LC connectors and pigtails and all necessary panels, shelves and shutters.

The installation work was carried out by Excel I.T., a premier London based IT managed service provider for voice/data infrastructure. ”We found the Datwyler ca-bling solution to be of great quality and very easy to work with. The Datwyler team was always on hand throughout the project, and the service could not have been better“, says Nick Smith, Project Manager at Excel I.T.

Switzerland: Data centre solution for Vetropack Group

In late 2010 Datwyler drew up a concept for the Vetro-pack Group, the leading packaging glass manufacturer for the European beverage and food industry. This was for the standardisation of the company’s data centres at the Swiss head office in Bülach as well as at sites in Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia and Uk-raine. In Datwyler Vetropack chose an expert turnkey partner, a one-stop provider for all the services from concept to installation. A workshop and site audits at all eight sites produced a detailed proposed solution for a safe, highly available IT infrastructure. This con-cept met with a positive response. A cost estimate for practical implementation, planned for this year, has also been submitted.

Austria: Safety cable system for International Anti-Corruption Academy

The International Anti-Corruption Academy in the Palais Kaunitz in Laxenburg was set up for the training and further education of executive officers active in the fight against corruption. All 186 Interpol member coun-tries will benefit from training. Following the conversion of the former country house, the academy opened on 2nd September 2010 with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon among those attending. The safety cable system installed in the Palais Kaunitz is from Datwyler. Datwyler’s contribution included around 16 kilometres of pyrofil® cable of E30/E60 and E90 functional integrity together with the appropriate pyrosys® fixing accessories.

Current projects – in brief

At the end of last year Datwyler was singled out by three respected Chinese industry media as “top brand” and innovation leader in the field of application-neutral structured building cabling.

In November 2010 the award ceremony for the Chinese “2010 Intelligent Building Brand Awards” was again held in Peking in the presence of numerous guests and me-dia representatives. Industry experts, planners, system integrators and users had identified the prizewinners based on a rigorous and comprehensive assessment

of criteria, i.e. level of awareness, quality assurance, services and support. Under the heading of “Structured Building Cabling” Datwyler again received an award as a “Top Ten Brand” (right), presented jointly by the journal “Intelligent Building & City Information”, the magazine of the China Exploration & Design Association, and representatives of the Professional Association for Infor-mation and Communication of the “China Engineering Construction Standardization Association”.

Qianjia.com once again also rated Datwyler among the top ten brands, ranked as 4, one place higher than last year. The Chinese “Oscar” for intelligent building (centre) is awarded on the basis of “Qianjia Brand Index”

data, an online ballot, professional system tests and user feedback. Datwyler won the prize in the cabling solutions segment, owing mainly to market-leading technologies and outstanding product quality.

On 30 December Datwyler was honoured for the first time by the renowned IB-blog website – and with a triple: the “Application Leader Award”, the “Standard Criterion Contribution Award” and the “Technical Innovation Award” (left). The website is an important communications platform for innovative ideas and

experience relating to energy saving, “green” techno-logies, safety, intelligent building and related subjects. The prizes are awarded following intensive discussion by 21 industry experts based on an online survey by the IB-blog website on the topic of “China Market Intelligent Architecture Development“.

Voice and image transmission in the form of digital signals and via the IP network is increasingly superse-ding other door communication technologies, made possible by the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The IP intercom stations supplied by Datwyler as part of the ecobus® ECO-T product portfolio support this future-proof protocol, which makes adapters, converters and other devices totally redundant. Companies which already have a structured cabling system will benefit particularly from SIP door communication, as it can easily be integrated into the IP network, by wireless as well (WLAN).

The new IP intercom stations open up many ways of relaying conversations: direct communication via a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch to IP telephones lends itself to residential blocks. Of course the inter-com stations can be connected to most IP telephone systems, but communication can also take place via local SIP servers (software telephone systems). Public SIP providers on the Internet allow communication on mobile phones. If SIP door communication is linked to building automation, switching functions such as exterior or path lighting can be integrated and even implemented on the move.

Modular construction Datwyler’s IP door communication is based on the SIP door module. This combines a door intercom station with a loudspeaker, hands-free microphone and inputs

for external call buttons. A camera module can be connected to a high-performance IP video camera via an integrated switch. This provides automatic daytime/night time switching, with eight IR lights ensuring good illumination at night. The modules are supplied with power either via PoE or a 24-V power pack.

The parameterisation of door module and camera is effected by way of an integrated web server. The SIP door module has two RJ45 ports and two relays for door opener and light, connections for various call buttons, and flat cable connectors for matrix and key-board modules.

The modular IP intercom stations are available as flush-mounted variants with mounting brackets and in vari-ous surface-mounted versions, the latter for example with a weatherproof casing or an impact-resistant IP65 housing. Datwyler also supplies a solid column solution for door communication separate from buildings.

Datwyler Cabling Solutions has an international presence as a supplier of high quality total solutions, including Fibre to the Home networks. In this market segment Datwyler also covers the whole value chain from conception and system engineering through installation and logistics to documentation and system maintenance. Successfully implemented FTTH projects for which Datwyler has acted as partial or general contractor attest to the good solution-finding skills of the in-house FTTH team and the installation and building partners involved.

High-density distribution frames for FTTH

Innovative need-based products are an essential component of successful projects – in the Fibre to the Home segment as well. One example is the new range of optical distributors recently introduced by Datwyler.

Up to 6624 portsAlso contributing to market success is the recent col-lection of innovative products – tailor-made for a wide variety of applications and featured in the new FTTH Catalogue. For example, the 19-inch high-density ODFs (Optical Distribution Frames) first presented by Datwyler at the FTTH Conference in Milan in February: The optical distribution boxes – with up to 6624 LC ports on 47 height units (U), developed for use in FTTH backbone and distribution networks – represent the maximum port density on the market to date.

Despite the high packing densities they provide a logically planned patch cable management system and ample space for comfortable assembly, splicing and patching work. Vertical and horizontal patching can easily be carried out in the ODFs, for example, and there is enough space for routing and storing surplus lengths. In addition to storage space for spare conductors, they have an integrated cable splitter box which can be mounted in the floor cavity, on the roof or on the side wall. On all guideways there are semi-circular and circular bend radius control devices to prevent excessively tight bend radii. The splice panels are preloaded with pigtails. The basic equipment also includes top and bottom cable entries, an earth rail on the front, pre-assem-bled levelling feet and variably mountable depth profiles.

The standard version ODFs are supplied as 42 U and 47 U, in various widths and depths, and in individual special dimensions on request.

As biopharmaceuticals become increasingly widespread, so the regulatory requirements governing them are becoming more stringent. Particular attention is being paid to the filling and sealing process for liquid and freeze-dried drugs. The latest requirement stipulates that the closure‘s alu-minium caps and plastic flipcaps have to be crimped under Grade A clean room conditions.

These new requirements have presented the Datwyler Group company Helvoet Pharma with an opportunity to increase added value and strengthen customer ties. The company has recently started supplying sterile aluminium caps and plastic flipcaps in addition to sterile rubber stoppers. In supplying these ready-to-use components, Helvoet Pharma is assuming responsibility for the sterilisation process and offering customers an attractive total solution. Standardised documentation, validation and traceability provide the basis for doing so. Specially developed packing techniques enable biopharma companies to verify the integrity of the closures’ packaging without compromising it.

By using Helvoet Pharma‘s new total solution, customers will no longer have to sterilise closure components themselves. This not only increases their efficiency, it also enhances the safety and flexibility of their filling and sealing processes. Furthermore, it enables customers to reduce their risks and production costs.

The Datwyler Group further expands its global presence. In the first half of 2011 the Sealing Technologies Division, operating as Datwyler Rubber, will be putting on stream its own facility in China for high preci-sion sealing and vibration-control solutions for the Chinese automotive industry. The Chinese Certificate of Approval for operative activities was recently obtained, the management team has been recruited and the rental agreement for the new site signed.

The newly constructed facility is located in an up-and-coming industrial part of Wuxi, a town around 150 kilometres north-west of Shanghai. Short distances to the main global customers, attractive energy and transport infrastructure as well as access to well qualified personnel are arguments in favour of this site.

Capital expenditure requirements amount to approximately four milli-on euros; with the capacities built up through this investment annual sales of around eight million are envisaged. Delivery of first prototypes is scheduled for the second quarter of 2011, the launch of industrial production for the second half of 2011.

The automotive industry continues to be the major growth driver of the Chinese economy. China is the fastest growing automotive market worldwide, with Europe and NAFTA increasing only marginally in terms of quantity. Tightened emission and fuel consumption regulations in China also mean increasing demand for state-of-the-art technology.

With the Wuxi site, Datwyler is one of the first suppliers of high precision elastomer components present with its own facilities in the three most significant automo-tive markets NAFTA, Asia and Europe. This strategically unique feature strengthens Datwyler‘s position as development partner and supplier to automotive and systems manufacturers. These will in the future put even greater emphasis on their global platform stra-tegies and will therefore give preference to suppliers with a worldwide manufacturing presence.

telecoms and industrial companies. In addition to offering attractive terms, the Datwyler Group companies also guarantee faultless quality. Thanks to their permanent presence in Asia and personal contact with manufacturers, Distrelec and ELFA are able to satisfy customers‘ specific needs in terms of functions, instructions or packaging.
