zorgen over.
sowieso gezien!
'Oost West Thuis Best' / Nina Aalbers
zogenaamde Limbo-pad, is Vertigo genaamd.
brabantse bier rijkelijk vloeide.
In

Jaimy Siebel
“One afternoon I went to the Gamma, the one here in Delft, and I
looked at this yellow (cheese colored) electro-tube”.
noodgevallen zoals opkomend vloed. Klinkt indrukwekkend, zeker
“I dream about my animals, ocourse, but I do
not fall in love with them”.
“Every designers choice I make is purely an
engineering decision”.

Maastoren RotterdamRoderick Trompert
vier verschillende partijen uitgenodigd: Diederik Dam namens
Dam & Partners (architectenbureau), Dick Westerduin namens Stevens
verschillende verhalen over hetzelfde project ter gehoren kregen.

Jurylig René was
www.myspace.com/theartifactband
door de volgende band, Stuck on the Bottom bracht keiharde rock
www.myspace.com/stuckonthebottommusic
HIDO was

The facts: Hurricane Katrina was the cause of an Urban and Humanitarian emergency. The speculation: Corruption, bias, irresponsibility.
Can we view Katrina in a new light?
A common known Emergency is the aftermath left by hurricane Katrina
on New Orleans. The past two and half years have proven to be a hard
time indeed for the entire region, humanitarian and politics together.
The culture of the situation has been one of bashing and blaming
– Charity Organizations and the Government alike. On a positive note
however, the disaster has made way for new urban developments that
may lead tolong-needed safer,, brighter future of New Orleans
While many of us today wonder why the devastation was so great and
long-lasting, and why the city seemed to be doing so little to rebuild
its abandoned neighborhoods during 2005, it is important to realize
that New Orleans has an unfortunate geographic location, and has
been experiencing heavy ooding for about two hundred years. The
city has reportedly ooded in 1884, 1890, 1891, 1897, 1898 and 1903,
1912, 1913, 1922 and again in 19271.
A History of Flooding
Like the Netherlands, New Orleans is located below see level (an
average of 1.8m), and has been, since the very beginnings of its
8th century less-than 1 meter high dike infrastructure, caught up
in a vicious cycle of rising water levels, additions of levees causing
Mississippi water levels to rise, and so forth. The original French
settlement in New Orleans was, after all, in the center of town, the
present ‘French’ quarter. During that time, the area currently known
as the 9th ward, which experienced the worst damages was still in its
natural state: a swamp.
The last was the worst of all, killing 1,000 people, and leaving 1 million
people homeless. Interestingly, there were class clashes present in
New Orleans at the time that were possibly more fervent than today.
The elite reportedly persuaded the Corps to dynamite a levee which
virtually destroyed two relatively large poorer parishes[1]
During the 20th century, levees were constructed to protect the city
from the Mississippi river, however poor infrastructure (and perhaps
a lack geological intelligence) led to destruction of the river’s natural
land building process, and also the removal of silt which helped formed
the city’s natural foundation. The result? New Orleans was protected
from the Mississippi River, but more than ever exposed to the sea.
Studies indicated the tremendous danger present to the city by cause
of hurricanes, after a series of serious storms occurred on the Atlantic
during the 1950’s. However, postwar Politics and the assumption that
a deadly-enough storm was likely to occur once every 200 years led to
the recurrent postponement of hurricane protection.
In 1965, Hurricane Betsy swept over the city while 30,000 residents
were in their homes[2]. The damage that occurred in the 9th ward was
devastating (see pic. below)
Six weeks later, Congress passed the Flood Control Act of 1965,
authorizing the rst federal hurricane protection for the New Orleans
area[3]. Again, split politics mixed with lack of future storm anticipation,
the city sadly suered poor dike management and ood protection,
leading to the inevitable. When Katrina hit, not only did the dikes along
the Mississippi break in many places, two major oodwalls which had
been constructed shortly the control Act in1965, collapsed. These
openings were the rst to push Katrina’s ooding levels to a record
high. They were also the last in a sequence of events that caused the
local government to reprioritize policy agenda – and for once and for
all take responsibility for the vulnerable position of New Orleans.
Split City Development
International press coverage has been keen on following controversial
issues regarding the Split city development of New Orleans, suggesting
that the Splitness is a result of the racial bias. Local government has
been accused of taking measures to hinder the rebuilding in the
devastated, Black neighborhoods. From stories describing ‘confusing’
paperwork for those in needs of government funds to police blockades
around the poorest areas, residents appear to have been denied access
to their own ruined homes.
What has been less of an issue in the press have been the concerns of
redevelopment agencies and the local government. Interestingly, these
developed into central questions and later heated debate between
experts regarding the approach that the city needed to take in order
to clean up its devastated slum areas.
In short, the problem is the devastated areas have suffered a
downwards spiral eect over the past 100 years, between natural
devastation, poor infrastructure, and lack of means for proper
reconstruction. In fact, the issue that concerned climate experts and
engineers after Katrina happened was whether the 9th Ward should be
rebuilt at all. Many proclaimed the area to be insuciently protected
and the poor quality of its infrastructure unt to be inhabited. Shortly
after Katrina, the American Urban Land Institute gave out a warning for
future ooding risks the 9th ward – the most heavily devastated – and
poorest – in New Orleans. It also declared in a report that the city would
be better o clearing major areas within the 9th ward for more suitable
purposes such urban park or wetland buer (4). A geography professor
New OrleansLaura Maasry
9s t y l o s / / e m e r g e n c y / / a l g e m e e n
proclaimed that it be an insult to the residents of the Ward to put them
back in harm’s way. Meanwhile, other areas such as the touristy, bar-
hopping, French Quarter were practically fully replenished after one
year’s time, contributing the widespread belief that the contrasting in
the poorer parts of the city reected political bias.
During all this, politicians were occupied with the laying out a
new approach to planning the city – a plan to put and end to the
recurrent emergency situations. Practically, the quick revival of the
French Quarter allowed for the quick rebooting of business and has
provided for the crucial revival of the city’s economic base. This base
includes a large tourist sector and is of importance for long-term,
gradual re-growth.
In the meantime, the New Orleans’ local government has gone
to financial ends to boost the city’s long-needed transportation
infrastructure. The city’s system of Intercity rail and rail cars (trams)
have been rebuilt and improved upon, with a greater number of
interconnected stations and speed capacity.
But Government supported redevelopment in New Orleans is not
only a short term concept. Slowly but surely, under the critical eye of
specialists development projects are popping up in various areas. A
month ago, the City of New Orleans announced thirty-three projects
that will be undertaken by the City’s new Development Project Unit.
A number of these projects will occur in the mostly devastated areas
within the 9th ward. Such projects are based on a 2006 plan to analyze
the city’s demographic and technical state carried out by ACORN
Housing Collaborative. The research was unprecedented in its detail,
taking place throughout the whole of 2006 and involving thirty-
nine leading rms in Architecture, urban planning, and engineering
from dierent countries, the Netherlands included. Its results were
integrated into the city’s above named redevelopment plan The
People’s Plan, presented in January 2006.
The Good Part about the Media
In 2006 Brad Pit started a large-scale cooperation with the sustainable
design promoter, Global Green.. The initiative was a call for more
affordable, long-term, housing. Global Green made powerful
statements regarding long-term benefits with their new design
initiatives.
Environmental sources have responded positively to new design
techniques, suggesting economic value in addition to humanitarian
needs. In fact, a recent study estimated that if the 50,000 of the homes
destroyed by Hurricane Katrina were rebuilt according to the Global
Green standards, residents of New Orleans would save $38 million to
$56 million in energy bills every year.
Interesting here is the link between the popular Global Green campaign
and Katrina’s media exposure. The disaster and controversy has created
an opportunity for Celebrities such as Brad Pitt to turn the attention
of commoners towards certain Markets. Where there is a good cause,
there is healthy exploitation. In this, the advancements in Green
Architecture in the region of New Orleans would not have received
the broad support and funding as it has in the recent past. Perhaps the
humanitarian catastrophy caused a sensed of responsibility to among
those of social auence.
Practically, the cooperation between Mr. Brad Pitt and Global Green
has allowed for a laboratory setting in the broken parts of New Orleans,
whereby new, innovative, perhaps idealistic architecture is being tested
out. While the current speculation is positive, the long-term positive
eects is true will reveal itself in the generations to come.
In August 2007, the rst Global Green houses were laid down for
construction – in the 9th ward. There are also plans announced for a
new community center. There seems to recently be a good amount
of initiative in ‘cleaning up’ this neighborhood.
The Trickiest Question
Plans for the rebuilding of New Orleans’ dike infrastructure has >>
Devastation to 9th Ward, Hurricane Betsy, 1965. The devastation caused to the lower 9th ward during the aftermath of Katrina was nothing new the neighborhood’s harsh history of ooding
been of a slow nature. The best and truest explanation for this is the
amount of precautions and ‘proper’ research taking place. However,
such caution jeopardizes the city’s short term re-growth. The key has
been to keep this in balance.
This balance put aside – for the sake of analysis - Katrina caused the
right comparisons to be drawn. Experts in America have nally come
to the realization that having 200 year level protection – that is to
say protection against ooding anticipated once every 200 years – is
not acceptable. Professional advice the leading Dutch experts in the
industry been taken. Many of these experts have criticized New Orleans’
low-class ood protection. The frequency rate of ooding in Holland
has been reduced to once every 1,000 years.
In 2007 the Dutch rm Arcadis was hired by the US Army Corps of
Engineers to design protective infrastructure along two canals in New
Orleans that lie in vital position to the city’s water system. Post-Katrina
research indicated that such canals can be prevented from ooding
in future storms. The American government has recently acquired a
budget for 350 million for this project.
Among all this, there is one everlasting, unfortunate reality: A lack
of funding – for everything. The American congress has repeatedly
had diculty laying out nancial plans to a number of the long-term
projects needed for New Orleans to prevent future disasters. While this
is a day-to-day struggle for the local government, Katrina has been the
driving force to get these projects underway. Solutions have nally
been sought out, consisting of gradual, consistent nancial inows.
The future will tell us if the plans will be successfully realized. But what
we do know is that this is time, the mentality is dierent. //

East Berlin - necrologyRosemarie Krautheim
East Berlin 20th century - radical transforming processes are shaping the city fabric. Famous for “Plattenbau”, the GDR has to offer more than slab construction. This article is dedicated to the “maple leaf” a non-conformist structure disliked from its beginning. Now it exists merely as a virtual 'simulacrum' in the TU Wismar archive.
After the Reunion, German Democratic Republic (GDR) post-war
modern buildings have been exposed to decline and demolition.
Especially the 50 double curved concrete shell structures of Ulrich
Muether are endangered due to wiping out the disagreeable socialist
past. The ‘maple leaf’ is one of them.
Short site history
Zoom in to East-Berlin, in the 12th century, the sher island was part
of a city called “Coelln”. Later in 17th Century Coelln and Berlin became
sister towns, when in the 18th century, they were merged to Berlin
- Capital of Germany and seat of royal power.
During the last years of World War II, most of the buildings on the sher
island had been destroyed. Although there were plans to restore some,
in 1965 a new plan was developed, where the remaining buildings had
to give way to new. Between 1971 and 1973 the city plan of the ideal
town was conceived for the “sher island”.
The ‘Ahornblatt’ has been built as a “freie Form” inside a block
development. It looks like
"The curved hypar shell spits out a block"
This block shape served as the kitchen, whereas the hypar shell housed
the restaurant with 800 seats, where up to 3000 meals were served a
day to people of the surrounding oces and dwelling blocks.
Socialist Utopia and its eects
The socialist planning of the GDR was based in the principles of
functionalism, the charta of Athens from 1933. This contained a
radical rupture with planning traditions and the negation of the dense
start-up period.
“Architecture with great uniformity…Clear shapes of the structure,
rational construction and modern materials conveys an urbanistic
sense of space, which mirrors the stronger emerging relationships of
people in the socialist society and city.”
Ideological substructure of city planning:
- Eliminiation of private possesion
- Overcoming of spatial segregation (existence of poor and rich city
districts)
Eect on city planning:
- rationalizing into block building
- high productivity
- some old aristocratic or religious structures like churches and palaces
were demolished
Eect on housing:
In 1972 and 1990 there were Stylos excursions to the GDR, where they
mapped especially the dwelling developments in the GDR:
“Centralised state control over housing has resulted in a uniform >>

and standardized solution to housing problems.
Advantages
- the general subsidy to consumer costs
- an absence of exploited homelessness (as in bed and Breakfast
accommodation)
Disadvantages:
- For many however this is achieved at the cost of individual choice
and standards
- Lack of environmental quality
- Monotony
An engineer escaping slab construction -Ulrich Muether
(*1934 † 21. 8. 2007)
At the age of 24 years Ulrich Müther took over his father’s construction
company. He wanted to become an architect, but as the son of an
entrepreneur he couldn’t get a college place at rst. In the socialist
regime of worker and peasant state, he needed to earn himself as
a craftsman, before he was allowed to study part-time at the TU
Dresden. Finally he managed to gain his diploma with 9 other students
out of 180. In 1963 he nished his thesis on Hyperbolic Paraboloid
shells. At this time his work consisted of curved surfaces that can be
constructed from straight shuttering. Hard to imagine that there were
no Computers.: It took him 14 months to fully workout the calculations.
Later on, when his calculations were reassured by Computer, the
precision was the same, only the pace was dierent.
In the 70ies, GDR companies were expropriated. So during the building
process of the ‘maple leaf’ in 1972 Ulrich Müther’s enterprise was
formed into a VOB state-owned business.
Müther was no party member of the SED. “Here comes the young
rationalizer” he was greeted by the Communist party functionaries,
when one of his structures was opened.
With his gunned concrete method he had won a monopoly position – an unpopular position in the GDR.
But his buildings earned world wide recognition, therefore he was
accepted. Although travelling wasn’t allowed for the normal GDR
citizen, Müther had special permission to travel, to be able to build
world wide. His buildings became a GDR export hit. After the reunion
Müther’s enterprise went bankrupt. Although at the same time he
was gaining new recongnition and became a cultgure for a young
architect scene. In the same year, founded an Archive with his work
on the island ‘Rügen’ where he was born. After he died in 2007, his
Archive moved to the TU Wismar. Müther is considered as one of the
world wide pioneers of lightweight architecture, in the 2003 published
book ‘featherweights by Oliver Herwig’.
Building process and transformation of the “Maple leaf”
Hyperbolic Paraboloid Shells are the most economical use of forms
allowing the use of light-gage steel, oering simplicity of its structural
action and its inherent beauty, taking so many dierent forms.
As a reinforced membrane, the thin-walled shell can take pressure and
ue at the same time, because of its constructional shape and stability.
In the GDR regime, material was really expensive. On the other hand
labour was cheap. To save material for construction Muether’s company
invented a Patent of gunned concrete. The concrete was sprayed layer
after layer onto the construction- a process of skilled craftsmanship.

Maple leaf - demolition in 2000

Its total thickness measured only 10 centimetres.
Müther tied in with the former work of other “shell construction
masters” like Bernard Lafaille (FR), Antoni Gaudi (ES), Felix Candela
(MEX) and Dischinger (GE).
The inspiration for the ‘maple leaf’ was the restaurant in Xochimilco by
the Spanish-Mexican Architect Felix Candela, who worked with shell
structures, too. Müther built dome shells with an enhanced gunned
concrete method, where no sheathing was needed.
After the Reunion from the East and West in 1990, the building was
reused as discotheque. The disco was a misuse, because the extensive
glass surfaces had to be covered. The structures use of daylight couldn’t
be explored and the interior wasn’t perceived as a Whole anymore.
There’s a certain irony to the fact that the discos name was ‘Exit’.
Decline and demolition
After the reunion new hulls were wanted, hulls without past.
When the ‘Exit’ was closed in 1994 the ‘maple leaf’ had been empty,
exposed to decline and vandalism. In 1999 there were new city plans
for the redevelopment of the sher island. The site was sold for 10
Million Euro to a private investor. In 2000 despite vigorous protest by
architects and engineers from all over Germany this listed building was
demolished. Another irony emerging from the fate of demolition was
that Müther himself just then gained fame. “That got me back on the
scene” is how has seen it.
Now the other 50 shell structures of Muether are jeopardized to decline.
Some are empty, exposed to vandalism, waiting for demolition or
reconstruction. There is a redeveloping process for few structures like
the ‘Teepott’ in Travemuende, or the hypar shell in Magdeburg.
East London - a reincarnation
Buildings all over the world share the ‘maple leaf’s' fate. Especially
post-war modernist buildings are endangered.
Recently plans were coming up to demolish the ‘Robin Hood gardens’
in East London. A post-war structure of the 70ies, by Alison and Peter
Smithson (Team 10).
The UK Culture minister proposed to eternaliize the “concrete
monstrosity- sorry modernist master piece” - in virtual space.
Denitely there are voices against that: “In no way can a digital model
approach the experience of a building. Few models can deal with
the peripheral, never mind the multi-sensory experience of being
there, and never mind the multi-layered historical weight of a place
or space.”
“Aesthetics of change for the sake of the change” is no solution of
dealing with the ‘old’ but neither should there be “preservation for
the sake of it”. //
Some day there might be a virtual exile for architecture and than we can visit the simulacrum of the ‘maple leaf’.

"As a result of economic crisis, natural disaster and human conflict, many people are facing emergencies and crisis without adequate resources for long-range recovery." This first sentence of the web-manifesto of AWB is not just another vague warning: it's definitively a call for action addressed to desingers, developers and volunteers.

AWB (Architects without Borders), AWF (Architects without Frontiers),
Emergency Architects, Architecture for Humanity, Shelter for Life:
what do all these names represent for the current architectural arena?
Are they just defining something like a new wave of architects?
Are they just a trend inuenced by the pressing that mass-media
operated during the last years on evil-featured shows, such as natural
catastrophes and wars? What’s beyond these globally engaged designs
and designers? A matter of development?// The world we are living in
is now getting old and dicult to manage. Dimensions such as “local”
and “global” are inuencing each other through big deals, but most
of the times through hidden and bizarre ways which are not reported
so often by the medias. We all know the story. The end of the second
world war was the rst step towards globalization: the allies created the
UN, till now the most important international network of institutions
able to support crisis and urgent situations. The end of cold war then
brought globalization to a second stage, where capitalism sprawled all
over the world because of the absence of any relevant contender and
translated the dierence between political ideologies and economical
system prevalently into a matter of “development”. Nowadays we talk
about "developed", "not developed", "developing" countries. I don’t
want to go here through an analisis of what “development” is, but
I think that’s important to point out what some consequences are.
First: the level of development is commonly related with a certain
economical wellness of governements, therefore it is used to dene
the border between countries who can and other countries who can
not. Second : the relationship between countries is hierarchically
ruled by their level of development; think, for instance, about the
international debt which is pending on the future of under-developed
countries. Third: speaking about development we tend to link to it the
acomplishment of personal needs and rights in a strictly "western" way.
What is the breaking news then? The news is that today if we want
to accept globalization we don't have to necessarly get through its
most straight expression, i.e. “development”. The architectural practice
which tries to rescue suering populations is already a rst step in this
direction. Globalizing the crisis// 2 August 1998: the second Congo
war begins in the town of Goma, and in a period of 10 years it will kill
more then 4 million people. 26 december 2004: after an earthquake
in the middle of the Indian Ocean, a tremendous tsunami kills almost
300’000 people among Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh. 28
August 2005: Hurricane Katrina destroys the city of New Orleans killing
almost 2’000 people among USA, Cuba and other central american
countries. During the last two decades there have been more than
8 million deaths Because of big emergencies such as earthquakes,
hurricanes and wars. The jewish holocaust of the 40’s was a smaller
devastation, if we consider just the number of its victims. Are we then
in a real state of crisis? The current situation presents a global and
constant state of alarm. Globalization of markets brought in fact also
to the broader globalization of emergencies. Nowadays we became
aware of the fact that catastrophes are a worldwide question, and
symptomatic of this awareness is the simple presence of tsunamis
and earthquakes in our medias. Up to this, designers can not anymore
ignore the situation and decline to take an eective position. Consider
for instance that if we state that a shelter is commonly occupied by an
amount of 5 people, we can then say that more than at least 1.5 million
of shelters have been destroyed during the recent history all around
the world. The state of emergency isn’t necesseraly linked to the issue
of development, and at the same time facts and situations showed that
the reaction of governments to emergencies doesn’t depend by their
wellness or their GDP. Katrina docet. People like us// Up to now UN
is the most important international humanitarian organization that
supports populations aicted by catastrophies. Temporary shelters
such as prefabricated tents are the only answer of the UN to these
situations. At the end of the 90’s a new attitude developed. It’s the
year 1999. A 24 years old student of architecture at Bartlett, Cameron
Sinclair, together with his friend Kate Stohr rst developed the idea of
Architecture for Humanity: 700 US dollars, a website and a project of
dwelling for refugees of theKosovo war. Structured as an open-source
network, the community grew up quickly in just few years. Already in
2006 there were something like 2653 volunteers designers sprawled
over 104 countries. Sinclair stated that “this is not just about non-prot:
what it showed me is that there is a grassroots’ movement going on
here”. Think globally, act locally. Up to now Architecture for Humanity
has realized an interesting number of projects around the world,
rescuing population from gaps in the infrastructure of healthcare
and education or simply providing a new shelter. The applied design
strategy is based on local resources. It is about empowering people
of local communities with the tools and founds needed to develop a
low-cost sustainable project: something more than a simple prefab
UN tent. After that, more humanitarian networks rose up around
Sinclair’s ideas. In 2001 a group of social engaged architects established
the Emergency Architects Foundation after that dangerous oods
stroke the region of Amiens in France; their projects for Sri Lanka
after the tsunami’s devastation are important achievements for local
communities. Shelter for life, Architects without Borders, Architects
without frontiers. More and more design networks are acting today
in the international arena, bypassing divisions, cathegorizations and
hierarchies of countries such as that one based on “development”,
and facing extreme situations where architecture isn’t just there as an
optional. Beyond Functionalism// It’s time to start to talk about our
world with new words. These networks of designers and volunteers
are already questioning current problems with new strategies: the
combination of internet to the local action brought these associations
to important achievements. Although that their eective inuence in
the international arena is nowadays very small, these people have done
17s t y l o s / / e m e r g e n c y / / a l g e m e e n
already a signicant step towards an ethical renewal of the architectural
practice. The basic needs of human being are taken in consideration
here, and in this perspective there isn’t any preminent model to apply:
no more “the western”, no more “the global”. It’s not a question of
architectural functionalism, of "Existenz-minimum", because in these
cases there’s no other choice then to be sustainable and low-cost,
and style isn’t an issue here. Local. Local. Local. Is this nally the true
solution to the impasse of the actual architectural panorama? Every
year the faculty of architecture at Berkeley organizes a competition for
essays on the issue of architecture and emergency, open to students
worldwide. Then, what’s your position about emergency? //

oh my God!Peter Rosmulder
te schreeuwen: Good morning, Janssens family!
Oh my god...
ontzettend mooie Sears© dingen halen. Oh, kijk daar eens, de bank van
pagina 2231 naast die leren stoel van pagina 1638. Dat kan natuurlijk
alleen een échte designer verzinnen! De kinderen hebben ieder een
eigen kamer.

The architect - an endangered species ?
‘What is architecture’ and ‘who are we’? Our profession between 'archisaurex', ‘borderlining’, ‘archineering’, networking, walking cities, disappearing architecture and projectism.
Rosemarie Krautheim
Recently a law consultant not realising, that I study Architecture ,
mentioned to me ‘Architects earn a lot of money and are kinda…I don’t
know…criminal!?’ ‘Oh, nice’, I think by myself - something goes wrong:
How can the notion of our profession be so dierent from reality? How
can one think that we all wear Prada to work? Watching this shallow
Hollywood romance movie 'Because I said so', I could sense what he
meant. There he is, the architect: the unsocial, romantic, arrogant, rich
workaholic, sitting in his dust-free glass- steel ‘ivory tower’. Even in the
documentary ‘My architect’, where Nathaniel Khan tries to nd out
more about his famous father he ‘hardly knew’, Louis Kahn is portrayed
as a great architect, a ‘mysterious’ person. These two dierent movies
actually present an interesting perspective: The architect as a dramatic
mystery gure.
Dirk Baecker a German sociologist and economist, describes the
architect: “as the last embodiment of the renaissance person, because it
is only him, who is able to bring together faith in mankind, imagination
with bulky materials, and eectiveness on the free market. Nobody
knows like him so much about human life.”
Is that the architect’s mystery: Being the last renaissance guy?
Is the architect one of a long ago extinct kind? An Archi-saurus?
So is this mystery at the same time the reason for our extinction,
because mysteries are to fall some day?
Let’s demystify the mystery: What could be meant by the term ‘the
architect embodiment of renaissance’?The Architect is ‘not only an
artist, but a master, not only a carpenter but a planer, not only a
designer but a ‘fullller’. The architect is a generalist. But not only
that…’
‘Master of the Unknown’
He is a generalist, a director. Each building is a Prototype, with the
architect constantly facing unknown diculties. Slightly manoevering
the crew to an end product by communicating and planning. ‘Not
knowing in the beginning what and how the project will nally end
up', the architect can be seen as a ‘Master of the Unknown’.
“ Architecture is not just a building, not just what architects do, not
just what people experience or write; it is that which asserts that
architecture as we presently know and conceive is dead. That’s how
Ian Borden, the Director of Architectural Theory and History of the
21s t y l o s / / e m e r g e n c y / / a l g e m e e n
Bartlett Faculty in London puts it.
“The death of architecture – as with the death of all institutional forms,
be they philosophy, the state, nations, art, labour, family, politics,
history, the everyday and so forth.
The most radical architecture is that which dares to ask, ‘what is architecture?’ and ‘who are we?’ in the same breath.
“The all-knowing architect, who could embrace everything with
reassuring ‘building rules’, is a gure of the past,”says Mario Botta,
”The heroic architect of the Modern movement has modied his
goals, erasing the illusions of the political and idelogical culture of
the 70ies.”
On his way back from a Bangladesh journey - where he was building
the National Assembly - one of the most famous US architects died
of a heart attack, anonymously in the bathroom facilities of the
Pennsylvania train station in New York. He hadn't been identied as
Louis Khan, for days, because for some unknown reasons, the address
on his passport was crossed o. Louis Kahn kept his business 'ercely
secretive’, his former secretary explained. “Most of the time, I was
informed but often I didn’t even know where he was. When Kahn died
he left “massive debts beside his professional success.”
Hunch architect
Architects who worry too much about the future of their profession
are called ‘hunch architects’. Mark Pimlott used this term in the ‘Hunch’
magazine of the Berlage institute for architects who are worried about
the future of their profession. When exactly in history did this worrying
about the profession start? Until the 1890ies our profession was quite
protable... But in 1912 - the year of the Titanic and political conict in
Europe - rst worries about the economic situation, made architects
of the “deutsche Werkbund” in Germany reect about competitors,
economy, and about the future of their profession. ‘During the 30ies
and 40ies, when Louis Kahn struggled to get commissions, his wife
Esther, who worked in a medical Lab supported the family. With her
help Louis started his own oce in 1947. He was almost 50 and still
hadn’t found himself.’ Esther Kahn said about her husband, that he was
never interested in money, for him it was just there.’
Corporate architects
The architect is competing with engineers and ‘prefabricated systems’.
It could be an option to ll a niche, specializing in a certain building
type, like hospital, or Oce building. Does the architect become
the mere “facilitator of facades consumable Interiors” for systemized
constructions, like Koohlhaas claimed? “Value-engineering, lowbidder
contracting, fast-track construction schedules, and optimized oor-
area ratios, along with the blunt privatization of urban life, all combine
to slowly erase architecture’s social contract with the public, and
place it solely in the service of the bottom line and the brand.” When
functional architecture is sanitized to a symbol it becomes corporate
architecture”. Iconic Architecture functions as a brand for the brand,
where the building represents a company’s image. It creates this image
both, for employees and clients, to evoke a relationship or experience
for the enterprise. But what role does the architect play in this?
A Corporate architect is also the expression for architects who are
working within a corporation.
Instructions (from a serious webpage) on how to become a corporate
architect in 6 steps: 1. Graduate at a major university 2. Show your
potential already in your degree projects: Develop malls, corporate
centers and public facilities that span entire blocks instead of a single
lot. 3. Learn foreign language skills to expand career possibilities
beyond the USA. 4. Register for night, weekend and single-day courses
in online design programs. Because Corporate architects focus on clear
computer designs instead of pencil sketches. 5. Establish an expertise
in corporate building standards before you enter an interview:
Architectural corporations create colour schemes and signage
branding tools to maintain uniformity in every location around the
world. 6. Remain exibility in your schedule.
How to get out of the dead-architecture-dilemma?
“Architecture has a long tradition of giving birth to the future. For
many it was the Herald of the next world. The faith in architecture’s
redemptive power has disappeared, and idealism is a suspect mode of
mental activity. But there is always a next,” says Ole Bouman.
Ben Van Berkel and Caroline Bos answer the question of how to practise
architecture today:
“Forget that you are an architect. Please forget all about it.”
Boarderliner
...What happens if we forget to be architects?
On the German Internetportal www.Baunetz.de there is a section called
‘Grenzgaenger’ (in the following translated as: boarderliner).
Here you will find architects, who work on the border between
architecture and other disciplines.
„With a Master in Architecture you can do everything. It’s a great
foundation for life. But afterwards real life starts” says Corien Schaap.
“While classical consultancy is content-orientated, the system-oriented
consultancy is focused on process (Process consulting). Corien Schaap’
s work as a consultant is based on directing functional processes,
concerning communication processes and - structure.
She lived in Galles, Sri Lanka, where she worked as a „City Rehabilitation

Dollar, of which 99, 9 % are directly invested to people who were
traumatized by the Tsunami. Having nished this project, Corien
moved on to the next emergency area. As a ‘boarderliner’, and studied
architect, she can transfer her knowledge, which she has drawn from
years of studies, 3 years of professional oce work and 2 years of
teaching at dierent Architecture Institutions in London. Now she
advises conict areas on economical questions about construction.
As Lucas Verwij from Schie 2.0 puts it: ‘An architect is always welcome,
as much on the boarder between Burkina Faso and Mali as on the line
between Art and Industrial Design.’
Archineering
The neologism archineering is used for architects who closely
collaborate with engineers. Looking at a paradox in Modern
architecture: “architects and engineers represent two disciplines that
are mutually dependent, but speak dierent languages,” Archi-neering
wants to exploit this division, to create mutual benet for both sides.
The TU Weimar made archineering to a Master study program “with an
interdisciplinary education approach for architects and engineers.”
Interdisciplinary research and collaboration in teams of architects and
artists or architects and graphic designers can open new synergies.
the creme de la creme of Dutch Architects were discussing the future
of our profession. The individual speeches united only in dierence:
"It is hard, that all is focused on the spectacular, on the exclusive.”
Willem Jan Neutelings emphasized that “Kennis, kunde and evocatie’
will always be important for the Architect as traditional instruments.
He says, that in the end, "quality of bulk & form is still about 95%".
Ben Van Berkel in contrary emphasizes that ‘Organising a Building’
and a city is important, and there is potential for renement. Wiel
Arets speaks of premises and admission standards as the decisive
elements for architecture. But assumes that “Ideology, Luxury, and
luck are important values for our work.” ‘Bondgenots’ to collaborate
with are important on Rem Koohlhaas’ agenda. OMA participates in
gentrication processes now in Lagos Nigeria and other city planning
in developing countries. “A peak of our profession is to be able to
participate in shaping the world.” Now they also participate in the
‘European council on foreign relations'Organisation. In the end some
spectators were disappointed about the Symposium, assuming that
it was a ‘speculeersessie’. And indeed, that is, what it was: ‘Spekuleeren
over de routen’. But what else could it have been?
‘One destiny of architecture doesn’t exist’ remarks Ole Bowman. “It
depends on your character if you see the destiny of architecture as a
sort of tragic, almost apocalyptic path or if you face it pragmatically
and ‘go for it’.”
13/3 2008 Walking cities - man machine
12.45 Saal A, the crowdiest lecture I‘ve ever seen.We were amazed
by Theo Jansen’s walking structures, which he calls the ‘Artifauna’.
He wanted to create new forms of life, as he said. His ‘strandbeests’
between 1 and 4 meter height are made from electrical conduits. With
a number of feet and wings, they get pushed and pulled by the wind,
along the beach. The bigger ones are able to even house people.
With this principle ‘you could build walking cities’, Jansen said. Is
that nally the materialisation of Archigram? More amazing than his
structures, is the way Theo Jansen interprets his role in the creation
process: He doesn’t see himself as the creator. He says, that the most
ecient shape creates the aesthetic of the ’strandbeest’. Is creating as
an activity itself endangered? What does that mean for the architect?
In ‘BANG-design’ ‘The concergence of advanced technology makes
the human to an almighty creator’ - Norbert Bolz claims that we live
in an era of total design, where mankind can redene the term nature.
Technology becomes biological and biology technological. We live
in an era of man-maschine- interaction. McLuhan stated already in
1962, that media are “extensions” of our human senses, bodies and
minds. “The merging of the medium and the message (McLuhan) is
the rst great formula of this new Age. There is no longer any medium
in the literal sense: it is now intangible, diuse and diracted in the
real” (Baudrillard). So assuming that the way of creating changes in
a way that nature and technology are fusioning and a medium is
diuse …
The architect himself becomes a 'medium’,
...A mediator to merge technology and art, tradition and innovation,
and to ‘projection’ his own ideas with these of others.
Since the Situationists and Archigram in the 60ies there has not been
strategy it oers an abstraction to enable, resuscitation of public life
in the city.' Sure the Internet is a tool which brings ease of handling
and freedom to the communication inside a network. On the other
hand an indivudial looses inuence. There is an “ambiguity about the
emergence of authorship” in architecture, says Ben Van Berkel. And
maybe it is even inevitable, as signicant...
...innovation occurs when several people simultaneously have the same idea and mysteriously move in the same direction...
following subliminally emitted and received signals.” In this kind of
network everybody is a “deliverer” of a product which systematically
leads to an end-product. Un Studios call this working process “The
delivery-model-of-contemporary-architecture. “Architects are still
thinking - and educated to think - that they can control the whole
building process from the beginning to the end. They have to learn
to let go.”
9/11 2007 / The destiny of architecture

transferability of knowledge with the help of

'the' big ‘Utopian’ stream anymore. Utopia (sites with no real place)
instead, can be found in ‘gated communities’, ‘subcultural ideas’ or
‘Heteroptopias’ (counter-sites, other places)
Utopias and Heterotopias
Here are some examples of contemporary utopian notions: Ole
Bouwman suggested buildings will come to be “published” rather
than developed "Who will be the rst architect to win the Oscar for
best director?” he asked. 2007 ‘Second Life’ has set a competition for
architects to call for entries to their virtual world, where companies like
Nike or Mercedes already use the Platform to test their products- the
future for architecture: testing a building in the virtual space? Second
life, sim city, disappearing architecture,
Is our profession dissapearing into the virtual space?
The idea of responsive architecture ‘A living city’, where buildings could
communicate with each other “to optimize electric use” was partly
tested by Benjamin and Yangsupported fby the Van Alen Institute
New York. It comes close to the idea of “KINET - towards animated
architecture through responsive environments”, where animated walls
and fassades are already tested. On the contrary the Amsterdam based
oce 'One Archietcure' -seen as 'Corporate avantgardist' - is aiming
to engage the full complexity of today’s society." One Architecture’s
work integrates design and process. Through an understanding and
engagement of the deep structure of planning . Its director Matthijs
Bouw moderates “Dancing with Utopia” Forum on the 4th of April in
Berlin, which is about the day-to-day business of Creative Industries.
"What future and potential will Creative Industries have – and above
all: What Utopia are we talking about?" Recently the term Utopia is
recycled to represent 'indivdual lifestyle'. Dierent companies and
platforms use and abuse 'Utopia' for their purpose to brand consumer's
culture. Utopia became the name for a Sustainable Platform, the Utah
Telecommunication company, an Obeat Dining Establisment, a Gay
Asian Scene Guide - the list is endless. The original term 'Utopia' as
'the ideal place for 'the' society as a whole has vanished long ago.
Instead Utopia like socieyy has subdivided into subcultures seems
to be 'present' at dierent places at the same time to represent even
contradictory lifestyle. Michel Foucault invented the term Heteropias
- real places that do exist and that are formed in the very founding of
society - which are a kind of eectively enacted Utopias in which the
real sites, all the other real sites that can be found within the culture,
are simultaneously represented, contested, and inverted. Heterotopia
incorporates the no place and the everything in an 'all in one'. The Entry
2006 exhibition, in the ‘Zeche Zollverein Essen’ Germany can be seen as
temporary Heteroptopia, an institution asking for “How are we going to
live in the future? ” The three oors of the building had dierent topics,
where architects, designersand scientists, discussed urban boarders
‘Talking Cities’, innovations in design ‘Second Skin’, problems in
landscape architecture ‘Groundswell’, and tendencies in computerized
architecture ‘open house’. Some projects show the development of
‘buildings into organisms’. “The evolution towards articial nature",
how Norbert Bolz the Technic-philosohper describes it.
Disappearing Architecture - Heterarchitecture
Is there a chance for ‘A new kind of architecture – heterarchitecture-,
conceived as a hybrid, mixed-reality environment, to help accelerate
the process of our automating liquid logic’?
Liquid logic, a place which ‘is nowhere in particular, everywhere at once’...
a space which ‘is fundamentally and profoundly antispatial.
’Heterarchitecture will be largely self-managing, self diagnostic
and transparent to the user.’ Networking, Boarderlining, walking
architecture, does it mean that the architect as such disappears? “You
have to know how to disappear. Dying comes down to a biological
chance and that is of no consequence. Disappearing is of a far higher
order of necessity…To disappear is to pass into an enigmatic state
which is neither life nor death. Some animals know how to do this.”
Architects know, too. Although Nathaniel Kahn tried to portray his
father with the movie my architect , “Louis a nomadic eccentric still
remains an intriguing, enigmatic gure. He died but his spisit is in his
buildings."
The architect as immersive artist
(immersive = a term used for arts in the 80ies and 90ies, when it was
possible for the rst time to dive into articial environments)
For Peter Sloterdijk, a german philosopher,
Architecture is immersive as such.
The architect creates spaces, where people are living. Architecture, so
to say, 'swallows' people up.
In 1983, 9 years after Khans Death, the Bangladesh Capital was nished.
Altogether the building process took 23 years. Overall it was hand work:
Thousands of workers carrying baskets of concrete on their heads.
Nathaniel Kahn promotes his movie with the following phrase:
“Everyone knew Louis Kahn, except from one, his son.” Louis was a
workaholic. He almost lived in his oce, where he had extramarital
aairs with employees. It was just after his death that his wife and his
two aairs, with his three kids found out about each other. Nathaniel
was 11, when Louis died.During the movie he’s searching for the father
he hardly knew. He spoke to Louis rivals, mistresses and colleagues to
“make sense of his fathers' life and work.” In Louis Kahn’s architecture
Nathaniel tried to nd his father. “Monumental and full of mystery his
buildings are intensely powerful spiritual. For Kahn buildings were
living things.” The movie is a personal journey that becomes a universal
investigation. In the movie there are two aspects of immersion. The
rst is the actual notion to sense an architect in his architecture; >>
24 s t y l o s / / e m e r g e n c y / / a l g e m e e n
or better try to understand the personality behind it. And the second
is the insight into Nathaniel Kahns own personal fate and his view on
his father. Critics complain that the movie doesn’t do justice to Kahn’s
architecture. Though the movie was not intended as such. It portrays
Kahn’s life as ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ which intertwines his professional and
personal life.Shamsul Wares an architect from Bangladesh says about
Khan: ‘He has given us the institution for democracy…He didn’t care
for how much money this country has…He paid with his life…but
he has given us this building and we feel all the time for him.’ Kahn
died and his building lives for him? His son Nathaniel is saying, that ”it
seems that he is in these buildings somehow”. A monument like the
Bangladesh capital of Louis Kahn became even more than immersion.
It became a 'symbol for democracy' to the public of Bangladesh. And
a private symbol to Kahns son. “Architecture itself is a totalitarianism
- a totalitarianism of love, a love for space, enrapted to what encloses
us as a hull.”
Self full-lling prophecy
So how does this all come together at this point? It doesn't. Like there is
not 'the' destiny, there is not 'the' architect of course. But to be honest,
do we not all incorporate a bit of ‘hunch’? Just watch out for the ‘self-
fullling prophecies’ …They could hit you, before you have the faintest
idea and than you are workless, forgotten, banned… But this could be
the luck of your life, because ‘creative species’ do survive.
The contradiction in terms
So now, following the claim of Ian Borden: ‘who are we’ cannot be
answered as such. We create monuments. Nature invented stones.
Man invented “liquid rock”- also known as concrete.
Louis Kahn wanted to create something with the beauty and
sturdyness of the ancient pyramids or palaces. He translated his
thoughts into modern monuments. The most buildings only last
between 20-50 years, which is not even a human life. “Under the surface
of monumental modernism lurks another kind of architecture. Such
architecture is ephemeral. Minimalist architecture knows how to give
things up: ’the disappearance of joints…highlights the disappearance
of the material itself.” Sustainability is postulating for economical
dealing with materials - ‘demountable materials’. “The Architecture
of the future will resemble dynamic organisms rather than static
monuments.” Modern Monuments can be immortalized into virtual
space, how the UK culture Ministers proposed to do with the 'Robin
Hood garden buildings' in East London. Virtuvius developed three
essential qualities for architecture: utilitas, rmitas, and venustas
—commodity, rmness, and delight. The time has come to rethink
these.
Architecture is not dead; the monument is dead! Long live the monument.
The Stylos commission for lectures set the goal to inspire students
with kinetic arts and food design this year. And certainly inspiration
can be found in the construction of a walking structure. “The architect’s
practice will be organized as a limitless studio, a network of super stars.
The new studio will be a hybrid mixture of club, atelier, laboratory, and
automobile plant, encouraging plug-in professionalism. Time is on the
architect’s side.“Our profession is not exposed to extinction, rather is
it constantly changing:
The architect is not endangered; the lines between the disciplines are blurring;
Are the borderlines of the disciplines fading away so much, that in the
future jobs would be dened by projects? The architect as a creator of
'liquid logic'? So there will be professions without names? Some people
might then, on the question of their nameless profession answer: “I
am a projectist, projecting projections and projects.
“Today I write, tomorrow I build. The day after tomorrow I’ll go and 'project'. Oh, how good that everybody knows, that I'm a projectist.” 5

draaiboeken was gepland.
automatische veiligheidsrem uitgevonden.
met de tekst ‘do not use elevator in case of re’.
in Engeland in 1980.
In 2005 is in Nederland
Regels over noodliften
Daar houdt
(brand)lift. De totale ontruimingstijd is dankzij de nieuwe maatregelen
nu gehalveerd tot 20 minuten. Speciale brandliften komen veel voor
in Aziatische hoogbouw.
via trap (of lift dus).
vuurbestendige ‘vluchtverdiepingen’. In geval van nood kunnen de
Stratosphere Tower, Las Vegas
27s t y l o s / / e m e r g e n c y / / a l g e m e e n
In

beschadigd; 1250 mensen raakten dakloos.
grote hoeveelheden vuurwerk opgeslagen.
Volgens onderzoekers was
open: hoe gaan we onze buurt weer opbouwen?
was.

Concrete Design Week
// advertorial
Concrete Design Competition & SADD
ontwerpers. De internationale Concrete Design Competition speelt
daarop in.
leerstoel ‘Materialisation – relation to practice’ die sinds januari 2007
‘Strategic Architectural Design Development (SADD).
disciplines. Kennis van materialen, detaillering en toepassing, en
daarmee hun architectonische expressie, is hierbij essentieel.
bouwkundige eigenschappen .Om geïnteresseerde studenten in snel
fantastische resultaten mogelijk.
Materialen
Concrete Design Competition. Deadline is 20 mei 2008. Deelnemers

Bovendien wil men het verdwenen
Niet alle doelstellingen blijken achteraf even succesvol. Het voormalige
tuindorp het Roomveldje was een echte arbeidersbuurt. Men kon er
is.

bouwen vanuit particulier opdrachtgeverschap (PO).
‘wijk in eigen hand’.
dergelijke schaal mensen hun woning in eigen beheer bouwen.
aantal rijtjeswoningen of twee-onder-een-kap woningen.
Want hoe
gaat men nu te werk?
Hierdoor is elk huis anders.
gecontroleerd, in andere heerst volledige vrijheid.

In
Waar vroeger
een rommelig gebied lag is nu een prachtwijk ontstaan waar iedereen

let's cradleStefan Bogaard
Methodiek
Eco-effectiviteit is
afgevraagd of men goed bezig is.
Architecturale vertaling
Hoe krijgt de c2c (cradle to cradle) architectuur vorm?
(geïnspireerd op de Shintô tempel van Ise, Japan)? Of gaat het verder;
Hiertegenover staat upcycling.
Kortom afval is
bedreigde zonnebloem (Museum of Life and the Environment, York
County, South Carolina, VS).
to cradle-certicaat.
had. //

a question of ethics ?Laura Maasry
Does Ethics play a role in your design? Is your building Ethically just? These are difficult questions. Such questions may give an apprehensve feeling at the thought of the incorporation of Ethics into the Bachelor Curriculum at Bouwkunde. We must not forget that the importance of Ethics lies in the quest; the asking that needs to take place, in the first place.
case studies demonstrate ethical dilemmas concerning shared
responsibilities and conflicting obligations to clients and the
greater community.
Such courses concern Ethics and Practice, where the goal is to
teach the future architect to make well-reasoned ethical decisions
concerning both the design process and his career.
Other ethics-based courses include the University of Arizona’s
Land Ethics, which teaches a profound approach to the issues
concerning the environment, not merely through the ‘sustainable
= good’ model, but by analyzing and playing with concepts in
specic elds, for example looking separately at geology and
hydrology.
As a matter of fact, there is nothing particular to the presence of
Ethics in the practise of Architecture. Ethics courses are oered in
a range of disciplines, creating a spectrum of professionals. This is
simply most professional careers are subject to Ethical dilemmas.
One might even argue that the existence of such dilemmas is
nothing unique and is to be expected in the professional life of an
Architect, where multiple parties’ interests are at stake.
Ask Yourself, Why?
The real interesting ethical questions lie in the bigger context,
those questions concerning the movements and ideologies that
develope and change throughout history. These questions put
the Architect’s role in society is a point of criticism, rather than
accepting it as a given fact. This way one can achieve a broader
understanding of our discipline and gain a truly critical design
approach.
To appear in the four upcoming editions of the Pantheon, this
column brings a few contextual, sometimes historical, aspects
Let’s talk about Ethics
On Friday March 10, a heated debate took place at Bouwkunde
concerning the incorporation of Ethics courses into the Architecture
Bachelor program. Visiting professors and Architects from Europe
and the United States were present, each contributing personal
views regarding content and approach to Ethics in Architectural
Education.
The debate revealed dierent interpretations and possible ways
relating Ethics to Architecture . Ten minutes into the discussion, it
was clear that it is not a simple matter, especially when it comes to
how this can best be applied into university education. How, where
and why at Bouwkunde?, one asked.
One point where all participants decidedly agree upon was that
the teaching of Ethics allows for students to develop important
critical thinking skills as well as the ability to verbalize this thought.
The conclusion that a course in Ethics would be an appropriate
and fullling addition the curriculum at our faculty was concretely
drawn.
You might think to yourself, Ethics and Architecture? A strange combination. Superuous, unneccesary, unrelated, or self-evident? I am completely in support for required course(s ) in Ethics at Bouwkunde because I think this will help students gain the ability
to put their education and the eld of Architecture, in perspective.
Rhetoric vs Argumentation
Anybody who has spent a number of intensive weeks on a design
project has a story to tell,. This is generally referred to as our ‘concept’.
But what the concept often lacks is an analysis of the deeper
consequences, societal implications for example, of the project.
This is not to say that every building should and will possess such
implications, but reection upon such matters is necessary to create
a good design.
The ability to defend, with good reason, the decisions one has taken
during the design process helps one critically pose the most imporant
- and also the most dicult question of all: should it be built?
Unique, or the Norm?
The Faculty of Architecture at Harvard University recently added
Ethics courses into its curriculum. The institute has proposed a
proclaimed unique curriculum involving case studies based an actual
episodes involving dilemmas faced by practicing architects. The
39s t y l o s / / e m e r g e n c y / / a l g e m e e n
in Architecture to light and discusses the Ethical questions and
dilemmas invovled.
My goal is to contribute to our faculty a deeper understanding of
the importance of Ethical reasoning in the eld of Architecture. I
wish to provoke you, the reader, to ask yourself some fresh, critical
questions about either past and present themes and/or events in
Architecture while relating them to their larger contexts of history,
politics, and moral culture.
Who’s the Control Freak?
Architecture has always been subject to artistic and ideological
movements, commonly based on a set of Ethical rules. In the age
of Functionalism, Architecture was idealized into the the epitomy
of rational and ecient human activity. At the peak of his years, the
leading Bauhaus professor and Architect Hannes Meyer proclaimed
Architecture to be the product of the formula, function times
economics. Functionalistic Architecture strived to organize on the
basis of social, technical, economic, and psychological studies.
The precision of these studies allowed for the design process to
obtain powerful cultural role in society. As the interior of his home
was designed to rigidly suit to his core needs, the logical consequence
was that the habits of men became ingrained in the inhabited space,
‘tting’ eachother as to achieve an ecient daily lifestyle as well as
design.
But did such processes hinder the ‘natural’ evolution of daily activity?
While this question can not be answered with certainty, it is useful
to consider it.
Here we touch upon the relationship between human activity and
functional Architecture. Who is subordinate to what force? Who
should be subordinate? Ironically perhaps, Meyer proclaimed himself
subordinate to the societal endeavor of creating a utopian future. He
designed each of his buildings with the purpose of moving towards a
higher stage of communal organization. In this sense, societal change
was encouraged through a design process – a process at the same
time subject to a greater cause.
Can one make a moral or ethical judgment about this? Should an
Architect be able to inuence human activity – or should be the other
way around? Who gave the Architect the right to speculate about
the ideals of utopia, anyway?
Incidentally, Meyer proclaimed the Architect to be a servant to the
community, building for the community. He also recognized that
communities are made up of individuals to whome he gave the
social responsibility of ‘insightful thinking’ and ‘inventive genius’,
as he referred to it.
Perhaps the servant Architect claim was partially true. Perhaps the
Bauhaus Architect played a role in the great er educational process
of shaping a better life. Or perhaps Meyer was tactful as to form
his manifestos in such a way which Ethically justied the ideals of
Functionalism.
Free-Market, Rigid Evolution
So why it is important to understand the Ethics concerned with
Functionalism, whose auence during the 1920’s and 30’s has long
since faded? There are many answers to this question. One may begin
by considering that Ethical dilemmas repeat themselves, taking a new
form with each new context, throughout history.
Recently, Rem Koolhaas brought forward a set of Ethical questions
concerning the evolution of cities, helping spark a central debate in
the international Architecture community. He asks, with referance
to leisure-based cities such as Dubai and Singapore, whether public
spaces are being too rigidly planned-out, manipulating urban activity
to its present needs, hindering the ‘natural’ evolution process.
The current free-market context of cities drives this evolution debate
further. Private entities are steadily gaining economic control of
the Global economy, changing the dynamic and weight of parties
involved in growth, Urbanization – and therefore urban planning.
Rem Koolhaas has described this as a new, “non-thinking” trend in
city growth during the past 15 years2. So who’s in control now?
Interestingly, free-market based interests are in their economic sense
opposite to the collaborative principles of Meyer’s functionalism.
However, the resulting societal consequences can bring about
comparable and signicant Ethical dilemmas.
These dilemmas provide interesting discussion for students of
Architecture. Incidentally, they are toolbox needed for critical
thought. The development of these critical skills is vital for the future
designer to make the right decisions about the how, what, and whys
in Architecture. Realizing a design is one achievement, but creating
something that embodies soundness - both functional and Ethical
- could become a masterpiece. //
