This is Northern Iowa Located in Cedar Falls, UNI was founded in 1876 as

the Iowa State Normal School. From a single building on a 40-acre campus, the University has grown to include more than 40 major buildings and 12,600 students.

UNI emphasizes outstanding undergraduate education with complementary graduate programs at the master's, specialists and doctoral levels. Building on its historic strength in teacher education, Northern Iowa has developed other fine programs in its School of Business, College of Humanities and Fine Arts, College of Natural Sciences and College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The City of Cedar Falls is a pleasant and historic college town adjacent to Waterloo. Together, they are part of a metropolitan area with a population of more than 100,000. It is a center for manufacturing, finance, commerce and cultural activities in northeast Iowa.

The UNI-Dome

Northern Iowa's fans demand the best from the Panthers on the court and the school provides some of the best facilities in the Midwest.

The UNI-Dome is one of the nation's finest basketball facilities, no matter at what level the game is played. The building actually combines the features of three different buildings - a football stadium, fieldhouse and large auditorium. It contains facilities to hold a variety of events, such as concerts, exhibitions, trade shows, pageants, rallies and convocations, as well as football, basketball and softball games and wrestling and track meets.

The UNI-Dome has hosted such events as the NCAA gymnastic and wrestling championships, the Iowa High School football playoffs, concerts by Dolly Parton, the Eagles, REO Speedwagon, Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones; antique car shows, tractor pulls and many other non-athletic events.

The UNI-Dome's air-supported Fiberglass fabric roof allows for ample natural light during daylight hours. Its artificial turf for football games can be rolled up in a minimum of 36 hours. Underneath, on a synthetic floor

area, are basketball and tennis courts and an eight lane, 220-yard oval running track.

Approximately 16,400 spectators can be seated for football and 1 0,000-20,000 for courtside activities. For stage events, such as commencements, concerts and speaker's series, total capacity, using movable bleachers and chairs, can reach 25,000.

A spacious press box atop the east stands has facilities for 20 radio stations, television capacities and seating for up to 125 people. A photography darkroom, photo bay, concession area and scouting booths are other features. Two huge scoreboards flash messages and information to spectators throughout events. The west press box provides a meeting room for the UNI Athletic Club and space for special events.

1990 Season Preview The University of Northern Iowa

women's basketball team, under the direction of second-year coach Terri Lasswell, will look to build on last year's 5-22 mark with a seasoned squad and six newcomers.

"Last year was a learning season for us," said Lasswell. "We played hard in every game and we were competitive. Depth was a problem, but our younger players gained a great deal of experience, which they can build on this season."

Lasswell, who previously served as an assistant coach at Kansas State, said the players weren't the only ones who gained from last year's season.

"I learned a lot about the conference," Lasswell said. "Road wins are extremely tough in the Gateway and you must be able to win at home. The top teams are the teams able to win at home and pick up some of those tough road wiris."

Although Lasswell's inception into the Gateway saw her squad post a 2-16 league mark, she said the team gained valuable fundamental knowledge.

"We will use the same fundamentals we stressed last year, but we will have increased flexibility this season with more diverse players. We will try several different offenses and defenses, according to the type of team we are facing."

Among the top returning players this year are five of the top seven scorers and five of the top six rebounders from a year ago.

"Jill jameson's going to be a key for us this year," said Lasswell. "She gained a lot of experience, as did Katie McFadden, who is capable of being an impact player. Karen Amrhein showed that she is a very capable floor leader."

In addition, forward Loretha Mosley, last year's top scorer and rebounder, will be one of the two seasoned seniors leading the Panther attack. Mosley became the all-time assist leader at UNI during the 1989-90 campaign.

"Experience will be a strength for us this year as the players have grown confident in our system. We also have a new work ethic, of which

2

the players are very proud," noted Lasswell. II A weakness will be the fact that transfer Ann LaFrentz will have to learn our system. We also need to greatly improve on our rebounding. We had teams shoot 50 percent against us and win because of our incapability to rebound the basketball."

The Panthers will have a wealth of talent incoming this year due to an exceptional recruiting season and the addition of LaFrentz, who redshirted last year.

"In assessing the incoming players, Chris Robbins will give us flexibility at the post position, while LaFrentz is a half-court threat. Lisa Gronoski's

height, speed and passing ability will give us flexibility at the off-guard position. She also has a great threepoint shot. Traci Amos and Angie Mohr are both tenacious, defensively, at guard," Lasswell added.

In evaluating the team by position, Lasswell believes versatility will be a key for the 1990-91 Panthers.

"McFadden is best in a half-court offense, while Stephanie Davis will play more of a running game. Both will see action at post. Kathy Kolstedt will play both post and forward, but will take her shot away from the basket," Lasswell continued. "Mosley is a threat with her penetrate-andpass game, and she has worked very hard to improve her outside shot.

"At guard, Amrhein's size hurts us somewhat, but her calmness, and heads-up play, will allow her to see a lot of action. jameson may also play some guard, along with Amos. I think Amos will see a lot of playing time early due to her ability to see the court very well."

When asked about the league title hunt, Lasswell looks to the traditional powers to be in contention, but doesn't count anyone completely out of the race.

"I believe the Gateway will start the year the way it finished last season - with a very tight race," said Lasswell. "Southern Illinois won the conference with what it termed an 'inexperienced team' and will again be among the leaders. Southwest Missouri has great athleticism and Illinois State has great tradition. I also consider Bradley a team on the move."

In sum, Lasswell said she hopes to see more consistency from game-togame and a higher degree of confidence in her players.

"We were in a lot of games last year until the final 1 0 minues of play. We want to be able to finish off our efforts," she said. 'We'll take things one game at a time and concentrate on our home games. We will be playing a lot more home games in the first semester this year and we need to take advantage of it. It could give us the edge we need to make a run in the Gateway."

1989-90: A Record-Breaking Year The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team

may have finished the season in the _cellar of the Gatewa~ Collegiate Athletic Conference (GCAC) w1th a 2-16 mark, but 1t proved it meant business, setting a barrage of Panther records.

UNI, which posted a 5-22 overall record, set a total of_15 individual and team records, while two more marks were t1ed during the 1989-90 campaign.

Included among the team records set were single-game marks of most points, 1 07; most assists, 28; and best field goal percentage, .678; all against nonconference foe Creighton. Two records, three-point field goals made, seven; and attempted, 15; were tied in play versus Wichita State.

Team season records for three-point field goals made, 83; and attempted, 192; three-point field goal percentage, .432; and most assists, 432; also fell.

Individual single-game records set during the year were for best field goal percentage, 1.000, by sophomore post Stephanie Davis, who hit nine-of-nine from the field against Creighton; three-point field goals made, seven; and attempted, 15, both versus Wichita State, and three-point field goal percentage, 1.000, three-of-three, versus Creighton; all by senior guard Molly Kelly. ·

Individual season marks broken included most assists, 126; and best assist average, 5.0, by junior guard-forward Loretha Mosley; and three-point field goals made, 73; and attempted, 159; by Kelly.

UNI opened the season with a set-back to Division II Central Missouri State, 88-66, in the UNI-Dome. Then, the Panthers got on track, posting a 59-55 nonconference win over Northern Arizona in the Jowers Jamboree in San Marcos, TX. UNI fell to Southwest Texas State, 56-38, in the tournament championship game.

After a road loss to rival Iowa State, UNI dropped two more contests at the Phoenix Classic, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, to UWGB and Oklahoma. In a non-league tilt, the Panthers ran into a tough Nebraska squad in Lincoln.

Eager to open its conference slate, UNI went 1-2 in the UNI-Dome, beating Western Illinois, 84-66, in between losses to Bradley and Drake.

However, six more defeats in league play saw the Panthers pummel in the conference standings with road defeats at Southern Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Illinois State and Indiana State sandwiched around home losses to Southwest Missouri State and Wichita State.

Upon returning from their second road trip in the GCAC, the Panthers broke their seven-game losing skid with a 77-58 win over nonconference foe Chicago State in the West Gymnasium. UNI then dropped a heart-breaker in overtime, 60-54, at Drake in league play, which seemed to take the wind out of the Panthers' sails.

Four more league losses, two at home, versus Eastern Illinois and Southern Illinois, and two on the road, at Wichita State and Southwest Missouri State, frustrated UNI. WSU's one-point victory, 68-67, was especially hard to swallow.

But the Panthers were able to let all of their frustrations out against nonconference opponent Creighton in a 1 07-80 win in the UNI-Dome, a win that would re-write the record books.

UNI recorded its final victory of the season at home against Indiana State, 69-67, before bowing to Illinois State at home on Senior Night. The last road trip saw UNI drop games to Western Illinois and Bradley.

Seniors Kelly, Nicki Rohde and Rhonda Wiebold were saluted for their achievements while wearing the Purple and Old Gold in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Night.

Kelly, a tri<aptain from Oshkosh, WI (Lourdes Academy HS), finished the campaign as the team's third-leading scorer, averaging 10.3 points and 2.5 rebounds. She also had 26 steals and was second in assists with 93. She maintained a top 15 national ranking during much of the season for her three-point field goal shooting capabilities.

Rohde, a small forward and tri<aptain who hailed from Des Moines, lA (Hoover HS), was the team's fifth-leading scorer, averaging 7.0 points, while collecting a team-high average of 5.1 caroms. She also had 74 assists.

Wiebold, a forward from Amana, lA, played in only two contests last season due to a knee injury suffered in her junior campaign. However, she fought hard during rehabilitation and was able to fulfill her quest to return to the lineup, scoring two free throws against Creighton in the waning weeks of the year.

Mosley, a tri<aptain, continued her dominance in the GCAC, finishing as the Panthers' top scorer, averaging 13.0 points. The Fort Dodge, lA (Fort Dodge HS), native finished second in rebounds, averaging 5.1 , while leading the team in assists (126) and shot blocking (12). She also placed second in steals (33).

Another cornerstone in the UN I lineup was sophomore guard Jill Jameson, a North Vernon, IN (Jennings Co. HS), product who started in 25-of-27 games. She was the squad's second-leading scorer, averaging 12.0 points, while she grabbed 2.5 rebounds per game. She also had 56 assists and a teamhigh 41 steals.

A surprise at the post position was Davis, a transfer track athlete from the University of Iowa, who worked her way into a starting role with UNI after beginning the season as a walk-on player. The Dubuque, lA (Senior HS), native averaged 9.0 points and 4.6 rebounds during the season.

Also contributing to UNI's successes were junior forward Kathy Kolstedt, of Racine, WI (Horlick HS); sophomore guard Karen Amrhein, of Milwaukee, WI (Pius XI HS); sophomore forward Deanna Samuelson, of Pocahontas, lA (Davenport West HS); and freshman post Katie McFadden, of Marshalltown, lA. Most likely, the experience they gained will be a key asset when this year's version of the Purple and Old Gold take to the court.
