ANNE OF GREEN GABLESWednesday 8th - Saturday 18th January 2020 (not 13/14th) at 8pm; Sat also 2.15pm; Sun 2.15pm only

A refreshing, contemporary telling of the classic story. Stern Marilla and her warm-hearted brother Matthew hoped to adopt a boy to work on their farm. But the orphanage sends a loquacious little girl by mistake. Anne, redheaded, befreckled and incurably romantic, causes chaos at Green Gables and in the village but her warmth and wit delight everyone around her — even eventually the cold Marilla. We follow Anne through her rebellious years, her transformation into a young woman, and her romantic pairing with Gilbert. This play has been charming audiences around the world. CHARLES DICKENS – A CHRISTMAS CAROL Saturday 14th December 2019 at 4 & 8pm in the Talawa Studio

Festive seasons past, present and future combine in this seasonal treat as Charles Dickens gives a dramatic re-telling of his classic tale: ‘A Christmas Carol’. In this brand-new adaptation, actor Tama Matheson breathes fresh life into Dickens who takes to the stage to tell his moving morality tale of Scrooge, Marley, Tiny Tim and all those Christmas ghosts, accompanied by an atmospheric soundscape of Christmas carols performed by the Trinity Boys Choir and a string quartet from the London Mozart Players. By turns gloriously funny, sad, joyous and heart-rending, this evocative blend of carols and drama captures the wonder, pathos and sheer spookiness of this Christmas classic.

A CHRISTMAS CAROLMondays 9th and 23rd December 2019 at 7.30pm and 2.30 on 23rd

Following a sold out run last year, European Arts Company returns with a heart-warming evening in the presence of the author himself! Actor John O’Connor delightfully recreates Dickens’s famous performance of his best-loved ghost story. A Christmas Carol was the first public reading Charles Dickens gave of his own work. He enacted it over 150 times and the effect on the public was phenomenal. ‘The success was most wonderful and prodigious – perfectly astounding altogether!’ he said after the first night. This Christmas, experience what it must have been like to be in the audience!

THE TRIAL OF EBENEZER SCROOGEWednesday 20th & Thursday 21st November 2019 at 7.45pm; Saturday 23rd at 2pm & 7pm

The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge picks up a year after the disagreeable Scrooge has changed his ways due to the visitation of the three spirits. He now contends that he was kidnapped and tricked into being a changed man for the year following Christmas and draws up a whole list of criminal charges: breaking and entering, kidnapping, attempted murder and theft and acts as the prosecuting attorney in the trial, opposite the compassionate defence attorney, Elizabeth Rothschild, who represents all of the accused. During the proceedings, several witnesses contribute their account of the story that is in some way contradicted by Scrooge. There are also characters that cause Scrooge’s confidence to temporarily disappear. After all the testimonies were given, Judge Pearson declares that the three ghosts and Jacob Marley (Scrooge’s deceased associate) are “guilty of all said charges”, after which he calls for a “termination of all their ghostly duties.” The ghosts’ careers are saved when Scrooge drops the charges based on the agreement that the ghosts carry out the Christmas spirit every day in addition to Christmas. This sparkling new adaptation of Peter Pan puts Wendy centre stage in a feisty take on Barrie’s much-loved tale, but which never loses the charm of the original, nor any of its iconic set pieces.
