2015 PAOS

NEWS

From the President Dear PAOS Members and Friends, We wish to thank all of our members, vendors, and friends for the great turn out and support we received during our Annual Auction. Pan American could not have done it without you.

Members brought divisions and refreshments. Vendors donated plants and/or extended courtesy prices for our society. (I am still in the process of sending thank you letters to them all). We grossed over $3500.00, held our expenses down, and netted a nice profit for the club. This will allow us to continue to secure monthly speakers, raffle tables, and plan a nice Holiday Party with beautiful plants for members. This was our big fundraiser for the year.

We will not be selling sodas at the Redland Festival this year since the food vendors have lobbied to sell drinks along with their food. We are manning some entrance posts and festival tents, however most of those positions are filled. See me if you were counting on working Redlands.

Please make sure you introduce yourselves to our new members that joined during our Auction and explain to them the raffle, monthly silent auction, etc.

All members are requested to bring a refreshment for the April meeting. During the auction I did not get a chance to get volunteers for April.

This month our speaker will be Axel Cahiz from Amazonia Orchids, speaking about Cattleyas.

See you at the meetings

This Month at PAOS Axel Cahiz’s love affair with orchids started at a very a young age while working with his father in Venezuela, in 1987. The business has since been moved to Home-stead, Florida (1993). Bitten by the bug, Axel earned a Bachelor's of Science

degree in Biotechno-Engineering at Clemson University where he also worked as a researcher for the Horticulture Department. Axel took over the operation of Amazonia Orchids in 2005. There he owns and operates his own lab, doing seedling culture and genetic study of Cattleyas. On behalf of Amazonia, Axel serves an Orchid Consultant with particular expertise in dis-ease, growth and production, and greenhouse development. He also offers freelance lab work to other orchid growers including germinating seedlings and cloning of plants.

Though a Cattleya specialist, it was his unique “Eria Javanica” that won the Reserve Grand Champion honors at the World Orchid Congress held in Miami in 2008.

Did you know... The following is an interesting excerpt from the American Or-chid Society Bulletin, dated 1956.

The Genus Cattleya

The first published account of any member of this genus to bloom in Europe appeared in Loddiges’ Botanical Cabinet where it was illustrated and described as Epidendrum violaceum in 1819. Earlier, however, in 1818, Dr. W. J. Hooker had bloomed an allied species in his greenhouse in Suffolk, England, but he neither de-scribed it nor published any account of it at the time. The plant was collected by Mr. William Swainson that year in the Organ Mountains about 60 miles north of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and a division of the same plant was obtained by Mr. William Cattley, a patron of horticul-ture and one of the first amateurs to form a collection of exotic orchids, his collec-tion being the finest then know. This new and beautiful orchid bloomed in Novem-ber 1823, it was forwarded to Dr John Lindley, who described it as Cattleya labiata in his Collectanea Botanica, establishing a new genus which he named in honor of Mr. Cattley. Recognizing at the time the kinship of the earlier Epidendrum violaceum of Loddiges, he renamed this Cattleya Loddigesii. Thus the genus from its very incep-tion was based on the two fundamental growth forms of Cattleya, the labiata form with one leaf and the bifoliate, or two-leaved forms. The name “labiata” was applied because the lip was so prominent a part of the flower.

After the first importation from Mr. Swainson, no more plants similar to the original Cattleya Labiata were discovered for many decades, although many varieties of this species were found. Each variety differed, either I color, blooming season or some similar horticultural aspect.

From The Editor We all missed our newsletter last month, but you will find the

list of February Ribbon Winners for February on page 7. Our meeting was very informative and we had the pleasure of recog-nizing David Foster for his hospitality with an orchid, a bottle of wine and a certificate of appreciation.

Notices for our auction were on The Herald, the Community Newspaper and the Flyer. There was at least one banner on US-1, near 112th Street SW.

That explains the full house, active bidding and success of the event. And the plants were beautiful, refreshments were plenti-ful—including wine, a very nice touch.

On that note, I hope you enjoy the pictures in this issue.
