Paperblanks® Features

Originally used in Coptic bindings, clasps gave protectionand provided decoration to the handwritten, leather-covered books of the Middle Ages. Book edge printing –an often overlooked element in book-making today –was also popular during the mediæval period. it’s a plaid, plaid world

Mad for Plaid From punk to prep and tastefully classic to terminally crass, plaid has alwaysbeen a pattern that crosses lines.

Most closely associated with the tartans belonging to the clans of the ScottishHighlands, plaid material has actually been unearthed in the ancient tombs ofQizilchoqa in Central Asia that date back to 1500 BC. The patterns shown onour Mad for Plaid covers were collected in France in the 1800s, but they lookas though they could have come from last year’s runway collection byVivienne Westwood or Louis Vuitton! Then again, they may also have beencut from your grandpa’s pants. So goes the cheeky versatility of plaid.

The plaid pattern experienced a surge in popularity that moved it from its traditional associations into the realm ofpermanent fashion statement when Queen Victoria adopted tartans into her wardrobe. Her love of all things Scottish ledher to use the rich blacks, reds, blues and greens of a plaid pattern in her queenly garments. The “pledd,” as it was known tothe Highlanders, has always found a way to express itself, and our journals offer the chance for you to do the same.

Exotic Marquetry

When a cabinet is so beautiful it makes the heart soar and the spirits lift, is itstill mere furniture? Or has it become something else entirely?

Our Mother-of-Pearl cover is inspired by a glorious example of 18th-centurycabinetry that features inlaid panels or marquetry taken from an earlier piece,possibly one made in the East Indies in the late 17th cen tury. The termmarquetry comes from the phrase “to mark a tree” and involves applying thindecorative surface veneers onto solid wood.

Here we see a rare example of mother-of-pearl inlay used to breath takingeffect. Other materials employed in marquetry include wood, metal,laminate, pearl, bone and precious stones set in dark woods, pre ferablyebony. The particular style used in our example is called Tarsia a Incastro orboulle marquetry, after French cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle (1642–1732). He was Master cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV, and his furniture andpieces made in the boulle style are found in the world’s finest collections.

We present our Shimmering Delights in the colours of confectionery, specifically thedelicious hues of the macaron. Pointillé, one of the prettiest of the decorative arts,combines perfectly with the colours of these most delectable desserts for smallappetites.

The original binding that inspired these delicious journals dates from a bookproduced in 1709 in Zurich, Switzerland. Pointillé, a technique used for formingcover designs using punched dots to create a feather-light pattern, was especiallypopular in the 15th century, when it was used to decorate armour and coats of arms.On our journals, the delicate pattern of dots is shown off to complementary effectagainst our pastel covers.

Our Chic & Satin journal covers are based on a book offabric samples collected in Paris in the 1880s. Designers have always collectedswatches for creative stimulus. Bukhara Bukhara, one of Uzbekistan’s largest cities, famous for millennia as a centre oflearning and culture, was the birthplace of this dazzling 18th-century Islamicbinding. The luminous design features ornamentation painted and lacquered ingolden bronze, deftly evoking an indelible sense of radiance and light.

Sometimes known as “Place of Good Fortune,” Bukhara is located along the Silk Road. The city’s richintellectual and cultural life was shaped by Indo-Persian influences, particularly during the golden age of theSamanids. We can see those influences in this design which showcases margins of heart-shaped leaves, acentre rosette and intricate corner pieces, all executed with painstaking skill and consummate artistry.

Stitched Splendour Skill, time and infinite care are the key ingredients in the ancient craft ofgoldwork. Traditional embroidery is elevated to the highest pinnacle ofornamentation by the use of gold, silver or copper threads. Our StitchedSplendour series recreates an 18th-century Spanish goldwork-on-leather bookcover. For the original binding, embroidery was created by couching, apainstaking technique that involves affixing metallic threads onto the surfacewith nearly invisible silk stitches. Goldwork is a perfect example of how thedecorative arts can transform practical objects into masterpieces that transcendthe categories of form and function.

Developed in Asia more than two thousand years ago, goldwork reached its fullflowering in the Middle Ages, when a style called Opus Anglicanum was usedto create church vestments and hangings. Today, stitchers skilled enough to dogoldwork are rare indeed, and the craft is reserved almost exclusively forimportant vestments for clergy and royalty. Delicate repetition and astonishing detail help to create this silveredmeditation on the nature of beauty. The word “filigree” derives from theLatin words filum (thread) and granum (seed). The filigree bindings areenhanced with foliage-ornaments and clasps.

The original binding of our Shadow, Natural, Blush Pink and Maya Bluecovers was created in Strasbourg, France in 1697 to house Paradiesgärtlein,a text by Johann Arndt (1555–1621). To achieve the gilded and polishedmotif, a base layer of silver sheets was first die cut, and elaborate grooveswere then meticulously etched into its surface. The same technique wasapplied in Germany in the early 1800s to create the design adorning ournew Aubergine and Esmeralda covers.

The art of filigree is a moving testament to the human drive to ornament inorder to delight the eye and focus the spirit and attention. One can imagineour journals holding ancient matters of great importance as easily as onecan see them placed with pride on well-appointed contemporary desks.

Via Romana Let us celebrate the nobility of the Roman Way, the source of the Republic’s idealsand fortitude, and the strength that enabled ancient Romans to conquer the world.Our journals feature a representation of the cover of Parvus Mundus, or Small World,by Laurentius Haechtanus Goidtsenhovius. Each of the stories in the book is acautionary tale showing the moral conflicts people face in daily life. Virtue isrewarded and vice punished. Taken together, these tales form a coherent set ofethical instructions for the Roman people and are a pure expression of Via Romana,the Roman way of life.

Published in Antwerp in 1579, Parvus Mundus features a calfskin cover decoratedwith gold print plates with strapwork ornament and a scattering of stylised scrollwork.The original is dedicated to Regent Rudolf II of Habsburg (1552–1612), Holy RomanEmperor, King of Bohemia and Hungary, and Archduke of Austria. Equinoxe The intricate rules that governed life during Holy Week deserved to be housed in asimilarly momentous and ornate binding. In cultures all over the world, the first fullmoon after the vernal equinox is a sacred time. The cover reproduced hereprotected L’office de la Semaine Sainte, which explained the many rites andobservances to be followed during the most important period in the Christiancalendar.

The entire surface of the original cover was adorned à la fanfare, an elaborate,handtooled pattern edged in gilt. Fanfare, which was a style popular from the late1500s until the early 1700s, required tremendous skill on the part of the bookbinderand was reserved for books of great importance.

Our cover, featuring a tendril motif, reproduces a 1688 binding from the DüsseldorfMuseum Kunstpalast.

Emulating historical styles was in vogue during the 19th century. Patronsencour aged bookbinders to imitate the sensuousness of designs from theRenaissance and Romantic eras, and bindings were valued for their ornamentalrichness. As the level of luxury increased, book covers were frequentlydecorated with gold and adorned with silk, cloisonné enamels or preciousstones. By looking to history for inspiration, bookbinders createdextraordinary works of art.

Our Gold Inlay cover is a faithful recreation of a Stil der Neorenaissancedesign popular in 19th-century Germany. Stil der Neorenaissance remainedau courant from 1875 until the First World War. Composed of solid metal, theoriginal binding was first covered by a fine layer of gold, and then meticulouslyengraved by skilled craftsmen.

The earliest surviving examples of kirikane originate from the ancient Korean kingdom Baekje(18 BCE–660 CE). In Japan, kirikane flourished during the 11th–13th centuries, but when goldpaint began to replace precious metals the art form was all but extinguished. Our Kirikaneseries is inspired by the work of Japanese artist Sayoko Eri (1945–2007). A devoted revivalistof kirikane, she studied the art form and applied it to everyday items such as boxes (hako) andscreens as well as to Buddhist artifacts. Our cover designs reproduce the patterns of SayokoEri’s work using our unique printing process.

Kirikane Collection precision informed by devotion

Kirikane (“cut gold”) is the ancient technique of decorating Buddhist artwork with gold metal leaf. Theprecision of the art form is informed by devotion and mindfulness as the artist heats and bonds togethersix extremely thin sheets of gold leaf before using a bamboo knife (chikutou) to cut fine strips ordesigns. Glue made from hide (nikawa) and seaweed (funori ) is then used to attach these shapesto the object being decorated.

Parisian Mosaic Our Parisian Mosaic collection was inspired by an 18th-century leathermosaic binding created in Paris by master binder Nicolas-Denis Derome.Descended from a renowned family of book binders, Derome was muchsought after as his works showed a unique flair for lightness and vivacity ofdesign. Grolier Ornamentali Jean Grolier (1479–1565) was among history’s most discerning collectorsof beautiful books and the first to develop a unique ornamental style ofdesigns that became one of the most emulated worldwide. AlthoughFrench, he preferred that his bindings follow the design principles of hisItalian friend Aldus Manutius, the greatest printer of the Renaissance.The majority of the brilliant works were executed in Paris by tworemarkable binding houses. Grolier’s collection of books was splitbetween those he commissioned for himself and those he acquired orwas given. At the time of his death, he possessed one of the greatest and

most extensive private libraries in the world. Each of his books was ofextraordinary quality, in a style described as “quiet and simple, yet richand flowing.”

This Grolier Ornamentali series is based on one of his last greatcommissions, a gold-tooled marbled brown leather creation with aninterlaced curving design of single-line fillets and floral tools filling outthe six-pointed star.

An extravagance of beauty

Shiraz This 16th-century Islamic binding was originally crafted from black goatskin thatwas embossed, gilded, painted and covered with delicate gold filigree. Said tohave been first commissioned by one of the Safavid princes of Shiraz, it came tobe in the possession of Suleiman the Magnificent, the tenth and longest-reigningSultan of the Ottoman Empire. Suleiman, a distinguished poet and giftedgoldsmith, was also a great patron of the arts who orchestrated the developmentof one of the most glittering periods in artistic history.

In its original form this book cover was decorated with rows of golden lockets,handpainted with flowers and rosettes, and overlaid with filigree. Artists ofPersia’s Safavid dynasty (1501–1722) ensured that its bookbinding and décorrepresented a pinnacle of cultural achievement.

Rose Garden Ah, the rose. The flower most storied and maligned. Our Rose Gardencovers are inspired by miniature lacquer paintings that adorned fine booksin 16th-century Persia. The originals were celebrations of the luxury andrefinement of Persian life and culture.

Our revival of these ancient covers depicts roses primed on a gold base,surrounded by smaller flowers such as might have been found in thebotanical gardens of the Persian court. In a more regal presentation such asGlowing Rose, the rose takes her rightful place as the focal point. She issurrounded by her ladies-in-waiting: poppies, carnations, dogwood andtulips, and her nobility and pride draw the eye. In contrast, Wild Rose is amodest and stylised depiction of her beauty, subtly enhanced by the playof light and shadow.

Safavid Binding Art Amid the many jewels of ancient Islam, decorative bookbinding shinesparticularly bright. Symmetry and refinement of line are the hallmarks ofthese bindings, which range in style over many centuries from the simplytooled geometric patterns of the 14th century to the complex com po si -tions of the 16th century.

Associated with the Islamic Golden Age, the Persian Safavid-styledesigns represented a high point in the art of the book. These bindings

feature centralised designs of medallions, quadrants, and plant andanimal motifs, a pentagonal envelope flap closure and elaboratelydecorated doublures (interior covers), exquisite creations in cut-outleather, coloured papers and gilding.

Lindau Gospels The covers of the Lindau Gospels were designed to inspire awe inearly Christian onlookers. The book was carried in processions anddisplayed on altars. Its component parts originate from different timesand places; the back cover is recorded as being created near Salzburgbetween 750 and 800 AD. Originally tooled in gilt, silver and enameland elaborately decorated with jewels, it is a powerful manifestation ofart as a vehicle for belief. • Our products ship FOB Seattle, WA for US customers and Vancouver, BC for Canadian customers.Customers pay freight on all orders, except new customers, and those placing an Acrylic Display orderwill receive free freight.

early buy incentive/terms

✤ Order your 2016 12-month dayplanners by March 1, 2015 and receive Net 90 terms (standard discount applies).

✤ Dayplanners will ship in August and will be invoiced under Net 90 terms at the time of shipping.

✤ Minimum order is 16 units (2 units per ISBN) per purchase.

✤ Early Buy dayplanner orders are guaranteed to ship as ordered.

✤ Early Buy dayplanners cannot be combined with journals.

ORDERS RECEIVED AFTER march 1, 2015/TERMS

✤ 2016 12-month dayplanner orders received after March 1, 2015 will receive standard terms and discounts.

✤ 12-month dayplanners will be invoiced at the time of shipping and existing customer payment terms will apply.

✤ Minimum order is 16 units (2 units per ISBN) per purchase order.

✤ 12-month dayplanners and journals may be combined under one purchase order.

✤ We cannot guarantee complete availability for 12-month dayplanner orders placed after March 1, 2015.

RETURN POLICY

✤ All dayplanners are returnable for in-house credit to be used toward future invoices, valid until December 31,2016.

✤ Dayplanner returns must be received by Paperblanks® by May 1, 2016.

✤ Returns must be shipped prepaid by customers and a valid tracking number must be provided.

✤ Customers wishing to return dayplanners must call Customer Service at 1-800-277-5887 ext. 2 for shippingaddress and instructions.

✤ Sales Representatives can accept returns on behalf of the customer by taking possession of returneddayplanners and requesting credit by May 1, 2016.

Claims

✤ Claims due to product damages, shortages and mis-shipments must be reported within 45 days of invoice date.

TERMS & POLICIES

✤ 2015–2016 Academic 18-month dayplanners will be available to ship February 2015,or you can specify a later ship date on your order.

✤ 18-month dayplanner orders will receive standard terms and discounts.

✤ 18-month dayplanners will be invoiced at the time of shipping.


✤ 2015–2016 Academic 18-month dayplanners and journals may be combined under onepurchase order. 18-month dayplanner orders cannot be combined with 12-monthdayplanners.

✤ We cannot guarantee complete availability for 18-month dayplanner orders.

New customers/opening orders

✤ Opening dayplanner orders require a valid credit card for payment (Visa and MasterCardonly).

✤ Opening orders must be a minimum of $150 wholesale and a minimum of 2 units per ISBN.

RETURN POLICY

✤ All dayplanners are returnable for in-house credit to be used toward future invoices,valid until December 31, 2016.

✤ Dayplanner returns must be received by Paperblanks® by May 1, 2016.

✤ Returns must be shipped prepaid by customers and a valid tracking number must be provided.

✤ Customers wishing to return dayplanners must call Customer Service at 1-800-277-5887ext. 2 for shipping address and instructions.

✤ Sales Representatives can accept returns on behalf of the customer by taking possession ofreturned dayplanners and requesting credit by May 1, 2016.

Claims

✤ Claims due to product damages, shortages and mis-shipments must be reported within45 days of invoice date.

✤ Claims due to incorrect pricing on an invoice must be reported within 45 days of invoice date.

✤ All claims must be made with Paperblanks® Customer Service. Returns on damaged ormis-shipped dayplanners will not be accepted without authorisation from a Paperblanks®

Customer Service Representative.
