More than at any other time
of year, the holidays are
when we offer thanks for the
blessings of life. This year
has been an exceptional one for the Briggs
Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty family.
We have been privileged to participate in
unprecedented expansion in our area—not just
as real estate professionals but as neighbors
and friends grateful for the many opportunities
to serve in the communities where we live,
work and play.
In this issue of PaperCity, we are pleased to
shine the light on many of the servant leaders
making our community better and stronger.
And we do this not just to thank them but to
inspire others to roll up their sleeves and help
in some way.
You will hear from many of our agents and
their families who are passing on the tradition
of fundraising, volunteering and helping to set
the servant leader example. And you’ll have
the opportunity to meet many of the “angels”
who quietly go about caring for neighbors in
need and making our community a better place
to live.
We’ll introduce you to the elementary age,
Wee Volunteers who collect food for children
in crisis and spend Saturday’s covering up
graffiti on playgrounds. Then you’ll meet an
inspiring mom who’s made her way from
middle school pregnancy to working on her
nursing degree at UTD—thanks to the YMCA’s
outstanding Nurse/Family Partnership program.
And because serving can be as easy as driving
a car, we’re pleased to highlight the American
Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery volunteers
who transport patients to and from doctor
appointments and chemotherapy treatments.
The holiday season is when we count our
blessings and thank those who’ve contributed
so much to our community. I hope you will
embrace the spirit of the season and carry that
faith, hope and joy throughout the New Year.
Thank you for allowing us to remain a part of
your lives. We wish you and yours a wonderful
holiday.

Who Serve

After driving 10,000

in Iraq, the truck the Army
National Guardsman drove hit a roadside bomb. Walter wears
his dad’s hat and dog tag and was thrilled last year when
Carry The Load marchers asked him to be the flag bearer as
they passed through Memphis, TN.
While marching, he met Stephen Holley, a former Navy Seal,
who co-founded Carry The Load with fellow former Seal
Clint Bruce. “That relationship (with Holley) has been
really cool,” said Mom, Natalie Stovall Frady.
To increase awareness and raise more than $2
million over the past four years to honor fallen soldiers,
policemen, firemen and other first responders, Carry
The Load walks each spring 1,600 miles from the
cemetery at West Point, NY, to Dallas, arriving on
Memorial Day. “It is really an uplifting way to recognize
the holiday,” Ms. Frady said. “You feel you are doing
something.”

Acting on Faith
hile mentoring a child
through a West Dallas ministry,
Reid Porter had a transformative
experience that lead to a keen
understanding of how run-down
and abandoned properties affect a
community. The recent law school
graduate soon left private practice
to create Advocates for Community
Transformation (ACT). His five-year-
old, faith-based organization helps
empower local residents to become
dedicated advocates for their own
neighborhoods.
ACT is focused on inspiring inner-
city residents, through legal advocacy,
to seek resolution for crime-ridden
properties. “Drug houses adversely
affect the quality of life for people living
around them and are the root cause of
criminal activity in the neighborhoods,”
says Porter. “These houses harbor
individuals who use the
property for criminal activity
of all kinds. Neighbors are left
feeling like prisoners in their
own homes.”
The results are inspirational –
children are able to walk safely
to school, property values for
residents and businesses are
increasing and there’s less
demand for law enforcement
and emergency medical
services. actdallas.org

Hill’s parents
gifted him
a trip to Africa
in 1972, little did they know
he’d discover a passion that
would guide his entire adult
life. Hill, a native of Dallas who
spends nine months of the year
in Kenya, is at the center of the
Big Life Foundation, a wildlife
and wilderness conservation
group known for its innovative
approach to saving the animals
and the culture along the Tanzania/
Kenya border. “If you are going
to save the African wildlife and
wilderness, you have to work
within the culture and traditions
to be successful,” said Hill.
To battle elephant poachers,
the group uses tracker dogs
to trail illegal hunters through
the country’s rough terrain. The
dogs work with Big Life rangers
to locate teams of poachers –
many of whom are afraid of the
“supernatural” tracking powers of
these dogs.
The group also has pioneered a
program that compensates Maasai
tribesmen when their livestock is
killed by predatory animals. The
compensation program has ended
a major threat to Kenya’s lion
population. biglife.org

Huffington
was diagnosed
with Parkinson’s
disease, a degenerative
neurological disease that
affects movement. One of
the primary symptoms of the
disease is the softened and
eventual loss of one’s voice.
“Right away I started therapy
at UT Southwestern and
saw a lot of success, but my
voice was getting weaker and
weaker,” Huffington said. A doctor suggested
he start therapy at the Parkinson Voice Project,
the only nonprofit of its kind. The program pairs
speech-language pathologists with patients to
master “speaking with intent.”
The program changed Huffington’s life.
“Before Parkinson’s I was a soft-spoken guy, but
after going through the SPEAK OUT! program,
people told me I had a stronger voice than
before my diagnosis,” he said.
Huffington’s passion for this program is even
stronger than his voice. He helped found The
LOUD Crowd, a Parkinson’s support group. “A
big part of this disease is that there will come a
point when you can’t speak anymore, but with
this program people have a voice until the end,”
he said.

E ighteen-year-old Angelica
Rodriguez was not supposed
have this life. Pregnant at 13 with little
support and even fewer opportunities,
Angelica joined the YWCA of
Metropolitan Dallas’ Nurse-Family
Partnership – a program that pairs a
licensed nurse with a teen mom for 60
home visits over two years.
“Holly taught me everything – like
what was happening with my body,
that I should read to my son every day
to help him build his vocabulary and
how to keep control of tense situations
with my family,” said Rodriguez, who
fast-tracked high school and graduated
with her Associates in Science. Now
she is pursuing a nursing degree at
the University of Texas at Arlington.
Rodriguez’s son, Sebastian, is also a star
student – already reading in both English
and Spanish at only 5 years old.
According to Jennifer Ware, CEO
of the YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas,
currently 286,000 women and girls
live in poverty in Dallas County, and
that number is expected to increase by
another 100,000 by 2020. Programs
such as these address poverty where it
starts – in the family. ywcadallas.org
Many women faced with
an unplanned pregnancy
feel hopeless – as if they have no
options. “While working at Thrive
Pregnancy Resource Center, I noticed
many women weren’t considering
adoption,” said Ellen Porter, founder of
BraveLove, a hub for adoption stories
and education that works to remove
the stigma of adoption.
For Porter, adoption isn’t just a job; it’s quite literally her way
of life. With two biological and two internationally adopted
children, Porter knows “the beauty adoption brings.”
“At BraveLove we champion mothers who have made this
tough choice and show the world, through people’s stories,
that adoption is a beautiful, brave and loving choice,” said
Porter.
If nothing more, BraveLove is an opportunity for the birth
mothers, who often feel unheard, to have a voice, said Porter.
“My heart goes out to the mothers who carried my babies. I
know I may never meet them, but I want them to know their
children are beloved.” bravelove.org

In 2008, just as Fields was starting to build the
foundation for Rae’s Hope, she was diagnosed
with breast cancer. “It was hard for me, but the girls
inspired me and kept me going,” said Fields.
For years as a volleyball coach and teacher, Fields
saw that it was easier to teach life lessons on the
court. Along with coaching volleyball, Rae’s Hope
teaches nutrition, healthy living, conflict resolution,
etiquette and financial literacy at four locations across
Dallas.
Fields said these girls are like her own daughters.
“My husband and I never had children, so we see
these girls as God’s gift to us and we love each one of
them.” raeshope.org

When Brooke Tinch

their first volunteer-themed
play date, it became clear
that they wanted to instill
a passion for service in
their children. Brooke soon
discovered the women at
Wee Volunteer, and she has

Offering age-appropriate and

Wee Volunteer ensures
that children of all ages can

projects and schedules offer something for every family –
from Wipe Out Graffiti events to playing with dogs at the
SPCA of Texas.
“It really teaches your kids perspective,” Brooke says.
“It’s great for them to realize at a young age that there
are other children and families out there who are not as
blessed.”
Whether delivering meals to needy families or just
spending time with those less fortunate, Wee Volunteers
do their part to ensure that the next generation knows the

It’s not about creating a
better picture. It’s about
making a better life.
Angry outbursts, little
communication and isolating
behavior led one young boy
to Art Station Fort Worth,
where licensed therapists encouraged him to create
a 3-D model of his ideal city. The result was a city with
no school and a large jail to lock up the bad guys.
Through support and encouragement, therapists
learned that the boy was being bullied and felt
powerless to make it stop. They worked with him to
develop ways to stand up for himself, ask for help and
begin making productive friendships.
“When people are unable to find the words to
describe something difficult, art therapy provides
a visual language to express anxiety, trauma,
grief, developmental delays, behavior issues and
life challenges,” said Peggy Marshall, CEO of Art
Station Fort Worth. The only nonprofit, art-based
therapy program of its kind in North Texas, Art
Station Fort Worth serves children, teens and adults
and even has a program for returning veterans
experiencing difficulty with the transition to civilian life. theartstation.org
For his 6th birthday, April
Gorman’s son surprised her
when, in place of toys and games, he
asked for socks to help homeless people
he had seen on Dallas streets. When
he gave out the socks one morning at
the Stewpot, those who received them
showered smiles on the young Gorman.
That inspired him and his mother to
begin raising money to buy more
clothing for the needy.
Now, two years later, dozens of
elementary school-aged children have
become philanthropists. Named the Little
Stewpot Stewards, the children raise
money through lemonade stand receipts
and selling donuts. The Exchange
Club of Lake Highlands contributed
$150 to further the Little Stewpot
Stewards efforts to raise awareness
and ease the challenges of poverty and
homelessness.
Established by First Presbyterian
Church, The Stewpot is the sole meal
provider at The Bridge, Dallas’ homeless
assistance center, serving 1,500 to 2,000
meals every day. thestewpot.org

Partnered with the Omni Hotel, the
SoupMobile welcomes 500 homeless
men, women and children for a night of
holiday cheer and heartfelt ministry in
Dallas’ iconic luxury hotel. Lisa and her
counterparts ensure that each person has
a warm bed, several warm meals and
plenty of fun.The guests are honored with
a banquet, a movie night and a Christmas
Eve church service.
“They’re treated like royalty,” Lisa says. “When
they wake up Christmas morning, they’re not
under a bridge; they’re in a warm bed in a safe
place.”
The SoupMobile works year-round delivering
meals to the homeless in Dallas, but this
Christmas Eve celebration is a truly selfless
expression of the holiday spirit.

HOMEROOM AT THE INN PUPPY LOVE
When Valerie Jones became an empty nester, she knew she wanted to spend her newly acquired free time volunteering and giving back. After almost a year of research, she fell in love with the mission of the SPCA of Texas, the private and independently funded nonprofit that provides love and care to homeless and neglected animals. Through training classes, Jones learned to assist in the surgery room, work with behavior training and
provide excellent foster care. “It’s probably one of the best
decisions I’ve ever made in my life,” she says. “I’m an animal lover, and all of their training and the way they treat their animals is so positive and loving.” The SPCA strives to give each animal the attention it deserves. Jones is a shining example of a heart truly dedicated to helping those who cannot speak for themselves. spca.org

as
Mac Robinson left his daughter almost 20 years ago to pursue his crack cocaine addiction. His
journey took him to 21 different drug
rehabilitation facilities, and he tried to
commit suicide three times.
Today Robinson, 53, is sober and
a student at the World Impact Bible
Seminary with plans to open his own
ministry to help other men on the
street. And he is trying to be a father
again, a part of the life of his now
26-year-old daughter.
The reason for the turnaround in
Robinson’s life is his association with
Men of Nehemiah. The organization,
founded by Pastor Louis Harrell in
2009, provides men a place to live,
substance abuse counseling, life skills
training and help finding a job. The
organization houses and treats about 40
men at a time. In its short history, 30
men have graduated from the year-long
program and are employed.
The son of an Army colonel and
Pentecostal minister, Harrell uses
military-style training to help the men’s
recovery and re-orientation of their
thinking. themenofnehemiah.org

or more than two
decades, Debbie Knight
has been a driving force for
people fighting cancer
After her husband was
diagnosed with cancer in 1994,
she was inspired by a news feature about Road
To Recovery. The service by the American Cancer
Society provides transportation to and from treatment
for cancer patients who do not have a ride or are
unable to drive themselves. Patients often need
assistance with travel to and from chemotherapy,
radiation and other medical appointments. The
organization hit home for the Knights, and she has
been involved ever since.
“There’s such a need for it,” Knight says. “It’s also a
very simple, easy thing to do that has a huge impact
on somebody’s life emotionally and physically.”
Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use
of their cars to make sure that patients are able to
receive the treatments they need – an invaluable
display of care and compassion. cancer.org
t started with the blast of a triple-
stacked land mine, followed by
46 operations and a diagnosis of
traumatic brain injury and PTSD.
Retired Marine Jacob Schick lost part of
his hand, arm and leg, and something much
worse. “As I like to say, they are the gifts
that keep on giving, because the
mental pain I’ve experienced was
10 times worse than the physical
pain,” said this warrior.
After countless hours of
recuperation and rehabilitation,
Schick found performance
brain training at the Center for
BrainHealth at the University of Texas at
Dallas.
“The program is tactical training for your
brain. As a warrior, I was taught how to
master different weapon systems. Through
the high performance brain training, I’ve
learned how to master the most powerful
weapon I have – my brain,” Schick said.
While the recovery process is never
ending, there is tremendous hope for
continued improvement in both brain health
and quality of life.
“My passion lies in helping my fellow
warriors regain their drive and determination
and enhance their cognitive performance,”
said Schick, who is now a Warrior Relations
Specialist at the Center for BrainHealth and
Brain Performance Institute.

The Most Powerful Weapon Training for the Front Lines hen disaster strikes,
communities must
be ready to respond.
Doug Frazier makes sure
there are people in place
who know how to handle the
unthinkable. An active member
of the Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT) since
its first Dallas class in 2007,
Frazier has served as an
instructor for five years. He
guides volunteers through 20
hours of training, including
disaster preparedness, fire
safety, search and rescue and
medical operations. “I’ve long
believed that people are not
generally prepared to deal with
an emergency,” Frazier says.
“I got into teaching because
there was a void that I felt like I
needed to fill.”
Graduates of the class are
qualified to respond to disaster
situations affecting their
families and neighborhoods.
They may also continue training
and become part of a citywide
CERT program, which can
be called upon to respond
across Dallas. Frazier and
his team have responded
to the devastating
Lancaster tornadoes and
countless other Dallas-
area incidents, bringing
lifesaving assistance in
the most trying of times.
