libraries (1970) and later published for him in revised and updated form by STICUSA in
1972. It contains approximately 1000 items. Martinus plans to issue a still further updated

The second source is Johannes Hartog's Journalistiek leven in Cura?ao (1944), from which come nearly all the items in subsection (c). Unfortunately the terminal dates of many more
or less short-lived periodicals are not available.
Nos dushi Papiamentu (Papiamento, Papiamentoe, Papiaments, etc.) is the national
language of the leeward islands of the Netherlands Antilles. Their population in 1968 was
208,468 (141,393 on Cura?ao, 59,231 on Aruba, 7844 on Bonaire), but of this number about one-sixth are native speakers of other languages?Dutch, Sranan, English, or
Spanish for the most part.
The ABC islands were seized by the Netherlands from Spain in 1634 and repopulated with Dutch, Portuguese-speaking Jews, and African slaves. Cura?ao quickly became an
entrep?t for slave and other trade, and the islands remained marginal to the West Indian
plantation system (Hoetink 1958, Hartog 1954, 1957, 1961b). Since 1915 and 1924, re?
spectively, Cura?ao and Aruba have become industrialized through the location there of
oil refineries. The income level is relatively high and illiteracy is now almost unknown.
Papiamentu has been developed to a degree unique among European-based cre?les. 'It
is a fully accepted national language whose speakers (and writers) span the entire social
spectrum' (Birmingham 1971). One of the three daily newspapers is printed in it; it is used
extensively on the radio; it has long been the language of religious life; and it is the vehicle of a flourishing popular secular literature. Dutch, however, remains the official language
and the chief medium of education; Spanish enjoys a considerable status culturally ; and
English is spoken by many. Though subject to strong influence from these languages,
Papiamentu has survived and has maintained its individuality.
Slight geographical and more marked social differences in dialect exist, some of them illustrated in May Henr?quez' play Laiza porko sushi (1954).
Papiamentu is noteworthy for the number and variety of writings on it not only by foreigners but by native, or at least resident, Antilleans. Though much of the local writing has been amateurish and prescriptive, it constitutes on the whole a valuable body of

material and evidences an informed interest in the language that cannot yet be matched from any other cre?le area.
The first known Papiamentu text dates from 1776 (see Wood 1970b). The earliest ex? tended notice of the language is van Paddenburg (1819). The first local publication on it
may be an anonymous Grammaire (1874) issued by the Dominican mission, and van
Ewijk's trilingual dictionary (1875) is fully authenticated. As early as 1849 Putman had al?
ready published an elementary grammar of Dutch in Pamamentu. Jesurun's grammar
(1897) was followed by others in Spanish, Dutch, and Papiamentu, respectively, by Evertsz, Pijpers, and Sintiago (all 1898). Twentieth century writers of widely varying com?
petence include Hoyer (1918-58), van der Veen Zeppenfeldt (1928), Latour (1935-48), Menkman (1936), G. P. Jansen (1945, 1947), Goilo (1951-62), Diaz L. (1953), Latour &
Uittenbogaard (1953), Maduro (1953 ff.), R. G. R?mer (1956 ff.), Daal et al. (1961), and Morkos (1964). Local study of Papiamentu continues. Bibi Alders, for example, has
compiled a dictionary (unpublished) of 13,000 words, in which variants among the three islands are indicated.
Two problems have attracted much attention. First, the orthography, which has fluctuated between Dutch, Spanish, and phonetic spelling. An official orthography still has not been
adopted. Second, the question?which has also attracted foreign creolists?of whether
Papiamentu was from the beginning basically Spanish or is essentially relexified Portuguese. The first linguistic sketch of Papiamentu was by an Italian, Teza (1863), working from
printed texts. Van Ginneken (19131) and Fokker (1914) dealt briefly with the language, but it was Lenz who brought it to wide attention by his full length study (1928), reviewed by
Hesseling (1933a). The only recent rounded study is by Birmingham (1970), but other
foreign treatments of professional competence include Armistead (1949-50?), Harris
(1952), Silva-Fuenzalida (1952), Wattman (Frank) (1953), Navarro Tom?s (1953), van
Wijk (1958), Kinney (1969), Wood (1969 ff.), Bendix, Hall & Hall, and Rona (all 1970), Alvarez Nazario (1971), and Grace (1971), Probably a number of unpublished writings on
Papiamentu, both in the Antilles and abroad, have escaped the compilers' attention. A
search of the files of local journals would probably be rewarding. An Asosyashon pa Estudyo di Papiamentu, with both Antillean and foreign member?
ship, held a conference in 1970.
Papiamentu owes its status as a literary language in the first instance to the churches,
mainly the Catholic Church, and particularly to the prolific press of the former Dominican mission. The many religiously oriented items listed here probably fall considerably short of the total output. A catechism appeared in 1825, followed by many others, as well as
missals and prayerbooks by the score. Along with many ephemeral publications there
have been several of substance, such as translations of Thomas ? Kempis (1882, 1938).
St. Matthew's Gospel was translated in 1844, St. Mark in 1865, and the New Testament in Eybers' Protestant version (1916) and the Catholic version by Kranwinkel and Maassen
(1966). Work on a translation of the whole Bible is proceeding under the auspices of the
Summer Institute of Linguistics (Loewen 1969). A large part of the press, notably the
weeklies La Cruz and La Union, has been under the direction of the Catholic Church.
Mainly under Catholic auspices, too, was the publication of early educational materials
in Papiamentu, beginning with Putman (1849). Since the switch to predominantly Dutch
instruction, educational writing has dealt mostly with language interference in the schools.
The basic study is by J. Ph. de Palm (1969). Secular writing for entertainment began relatively late. Except for Corsen (1914 posthu?
mously), who wrote at the turn of the century, very little 'literary' writing antedates the

1940s. Cura?ao and Aruba have been notable for the production of 'pulp' literature?
partly paralleled by the chapbooks in Nigerian English?in the form of brief 'novelas' and detective stories, often mimeographed instead of printed. Again, the many titles listed here by no means cover the total output. Among the more prolific writers of such material,
some translated and some original, are Tuyuchi, Nita, Ortega, Coloma, Raphaela, de
Jongh, and V. P. Hernandez. Other writers have aimed at production of belles lettres :
among those listed here, Daal, J. Ph. de Palm, de Rooy, Fraai, May Henr?quez, Juliana, W. E. Kroon, Lauffer, O. K. Martina, Martinus, R?mer, and Rosario. For still others,
such as Chandi Lagun, Frederik Oduber, and Oscar van Kampen, no published items have come to the compilers' attention. Lauffer's anthology (1972) is a good introduction to
Papiamentu literature.
A number of plays, both original and translated, which have been acted but not pub? lished, are listed in subsection (b).
The earliest title in folk literature is Jesurun (1899). Other items worth noting include de Barbanson (1934), Proverbionan Papiamento (1946), Jesurun-Pinto & de Palm (1946), van Meeteren (1947), Geerdink-Jesurun Pinto (1952, 1954), Brenneker (1959, 1962d), Garmers (1960c), and Castro (1962).
There is also a fair amount of purely utilitarian secular writing: political pamphlets, advice on budgeting, cookbooks, a legal handbook, traffic manuals, even a plea for
legalized prostitution.
Finally, attention should again be called to the diverse and rich resources of the period? ical press listed in subsection (c).
