—Debbi G., Lexington, Ky.
A: She did! Goodwin, 36, who also plays Snow White on ABC’s Sunday night series Once Upon a Time, likes that Disney’s Tinker Bell series, which began in 2008, teaches morals to kids “in a way that isn’t preachy.” Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast is now avail-able on Blu-ray and DVD.

A: Burns, 47, who wrote, directed and starred in the hit indie films The Brothers McMullen and She’s the One, has been busy penning his new memoir, Independent Ed (Gotham, 2015), which describes the highs and lows of his career. “I thought it might be a good time to look back and share with young filmmakers all the mistakes I’ve made,” he says. In June, he’s back in action with Public Morals, a gritty crime-drama series he’s writing, directing and starring in for TNT.

JULIANNEHOUGHThe two-time Dancing with the Stars champ, 26, who
turned her wins into acting roles in movies including
Footloose, Safe Haven and Rock of Ages, returns on
March 16 to the ABC show that made her a star.
Why come back to DWTS as a judge instead of a dancer? “Being a dancer is a big commitment and it didn’t allow me time to focus on other aspects of my career. Being a judge is a great way to be a part of the show, but still have time for my other dreams and aspirations.” Are you going to be OK stirring up controversy if you think you’re right, but others disagree with your opinion?“Whatever I say comes from a place of love. So I hope that if there is controversy, everyone knows it’s coming from a good place.”You’re going to be playing Sandy on FOX’s live Grease musical later this year. Is it true that the original movie made you want to be an entertainer? “It absolutely is. I grew up in a Mormon household and the movie was rated PG-13, so I wasn’t allowed to watch it. But every time my parents were out of the house, I would sneak in and watch it, and my siblings and I
would do the dances. I would pretend I was Sandy.”

takes him into six countries, through jungles, deserts and even war zones. “I also encountered crocodiles, elephants, buf-falos and snakes,” he says. “I found a scorpion in my shirt.”

O h, the power of letters. They’ve
fueled love affairs and severed
friendships, ignited wars and
settled them. They can convey
the most profound thanks,
apology or regret. Sometimes, they contain
world-altering ideas, such as Albert Einstein’s
1939 letter to President Franklin D. Roos-
evelt urging him to start a nuclear program.
(Einstein’s warning that the Germans might
develop atomic bombs led to Roosevelt’s
bomb-building Manhattan Project.)
Whatever their content, it’s not just the
words that give letters their power—it’s the
emotional connections. Whether saved,
framed or filed, they’re tangible proof of rela-
tionships. Each time they’re read, they trans-
port us back to our feelings about a specific
time, place, person or event. This may be the
reason hand-written—or hand-typed—com-
muniqués are making a comeback, at least in
popular culture. Take Danny Collins, a movie
debuting March 20, starring Al Pacino as an
aging rocker who receives a posthumous letter
from his idol John Lennon. That note recon-
nects Collins with his character’s younger,
more idealistic self. (See “Al Pacino: A Man of
Words—and Letters,” page 8. )
“Letters have that kind of power,” says
Shaun Usher, editor of Letters of Note: An
Eclectic Collection of Correspondence Deserv-
ing a Wider Audience (Chronicle, 2014), who
curated more than 125 such missives, including
14-year-old Fidel Castro’s letter to President
Roosevelt requesting $10 and Groucho Marx’s
advice to Woody Allen.
But you don’t need to be famous to write or
receive something profound. Consider Caitlin
Alifirenka and Martin Ganda. The two met
through a pen pal exchange in 1997 when
Alifirenka, then 12 and living in Hatfield, Pa.,
wrote to a 14-year-old Ganda, who was living
in one of Zimbabwe’s worst slums. Despite
wildly different upbringings, the two became
best friends through letters. Their upcoming
book, I Will Always Write Back: How One Let-
ter Changed Two Lives (Little Brown, 2015),
chronicles their six-year correspondence.
“I’d race to the mailbox every day after school
in anticipation of receiving a letter,” Alifirenka,
now 30, says. “I loved the feel of the paper, the
colorful stamps and the way he dotted his i’s
with o’s as much as all the stories he shared. His
letters felt more like gifts.” Ganda, now 32, says
Alifirenka’s letters were his “lifeline.”
“By sharing her life with me, she inspired me
to think of a life beyond Zimbabwe,” he says.
That included urging Ganda, a stellar student,
to apply to American colleges. “Following
Caitlin’s very first note, I’d say my full scholar-
ship acceptance letter to Villanova University
was the second most important letter of my
life,” says Ganda, who went on to finish his
MBA at Duke last year.

A Search for Connectione power of letters—to befriend,
love and support others—is why
Atlanta-based Hannah Brencher,
26, started MoreLoveLetters.com,
an online movement to inspire
more letter-writing.
“My generation thinks they
don’t have time for it,” Brencher
says. “But when they actually sit
down and write a letter, they real-
ize how meaningful it is.”
Brencher started the website
when she moved to Manhattan
after college and found herself lost
and alone. One day, while riding
the subway feeling blue, she saw an
older woman who looked like she
felt the same way.
“I decided to write her a letter
right there—and left it on the
subway car with the inscription,
‘If you find this letter, it’s for you,’”
she says.
e simple act of writing that
letter made her feel better—she

Fan letters. You’d expect
acting legend Al Pacino
to receive them—but to
send one? That’s just what he did
in 1963 when he saw Christo-
pher Plummer on Broadway in
the play The Resistible Rise of
Arturo Ui. “He’s one of the
greatest actors ever, and an
inspiration,” says Pacino, 74, who
remembers handing his note to a
theater doorman to give to
Plummer. “I don’t know if he got
it. I was a kid. He wouldn’t have
known how to get back to me.”
A fan letter also
plays a starring role in
Pacino’s new movie,
Danny Collins, in
which he plays a once-
superstar singer-song-
writer whose middle-
aged life is changed
when he receives a
long-lost missive from
the past, written to
him decades before
with words of praise
and encouragement
from Beatle John
Lennon. The letter is
given to Collins by his
manager, who is
played—with no small
degree of showbiz
coincidence—by
Christopher Plummer.
The plot of the movie, which
opens in limited release March
20 and also features Annette
Bening, Bobby Cannavale and
Jennifer Garner, seems like a
rock ‘n’ roll fantasy, but it’s not:
The screenplay was based on the
true tale of an encouraging letter
Lennon actually did write to a
British folk singer, Steve Tilston,
back in 1971. Tilston, unaware
of the letter, didn’t receive it until
a collector found it and present-
ed it to him years later, in 2005.
Pacino also received letters of
support from famous fans early
in his career, when he was on
stage in New York and then
starring in soon-to-be-classic
films, including The Godfather
and Dog Day Afternoon. Who
were the letters from? He won’t
say. But he believes that what a
person does with that encour-
agement is what counts.
“Sometimes we do things in
life that we don’t realize [make
us] turn profound corners,” he
says. Pacino now has entered a
phase of his career where he’s
more into satisfying his artistic
curiosity than making big
splashes. He played “suicide doc-
tor” Jack Kevorkian and infa-
mous producer Phil Spector in
HBO movies that won several
awards; he’s scheduled to per-
form on Broadway this October
in China Doll, a new play by
David Mamet; he starred in two
2014 independent films,
Manglehorn and The Humbling;
and he’s visiting film festivals
promoting Salomé, a movie he
directed and stars in based on
Oscar Wilde’s play about the
Biblical story.
His work takes him back and
forth between film and theater,
and his life takes him from coast
to coast. Keeping up with his
children (14-year-old twins
Anton and Olivia, with whom he
shares custody with actress
Beverly D’Angelo, and 25-year-
old Julie) requires both commut-
ing and communicating with a
21st-century method that this
man of words has found he now
prefers to letters, something that
has morphed his love of lengthy
sentences and long, flowing
responses into something much
shorter and snappier. “I like tex-
ting,” he admits. “You can’t really
write a long text.” —Joel Keller

started leaving notes everywhere, in bathroom stalls, tucked into coat pockets, on park benches and at bars. This led to a blog post offer-ing letters to anyone interested. The next morning, she had 400 requests. Her website, launched in 2012, is the result, as is her new memoir, If You Find This Letter: My Journey to Find Purpose Through Hundreds of Letters to Strangers (Howard, 2015).
Preserving Family History Jane Randel’s children have no idea their mom has been writing and saving letters to give them one day. This tradition was inspired by the loss of a dear friend, a father and neighbor, who died on 9/11 at the World Trade Center. At the time, Randel, now 47, was a new mother and felt compelled to write her then 1-year old son a letter.

Award-winning journalist Liz Welch is the co-author of I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives.
Put the date above your re-turn address? In the old days, Emily Post, famous for writing about etiquette, would have been aghast! When it comes to writing letters today, some of the old rules still stand but new situations dictate new guidelines. Here are a few tips from emilypost.com:
Always RSVP: Follow the invitation format. Reply to written invites with letters, respond via email to emails, for example.Address and date: If your stationery does not include a printed address, include yours in the upper right-hand corner of the page, with the date just below. Be kind: It’s never in style to complain, disparage others, gossip or vent. Finish warmly: Close for-mal or business correspon-dence with “Sincerely” or “Sincerely yours,” or tone down the formality by using “Kind (or Warm) regards.” End friendly notes with “Cordially,” “Affectionately,” “Fondly” or “Love.” For an acquaintance or someone you haven’t seen in a long time, try “As Always.” Sign off: Use your first and last name with someone you’ve never met in person. Put your last name in paren-theses if you’ve only spoken to the letter recipient on the phone. For friends or close business associates, sign with your first name or nickname.
on the page,” she says. “9/11 madeus all consider our mortality—I certainly realized that nothing mat-tered more than my family.
“I’m not sure when I will present them—but I hope that when I do, they will be meaningful.”
Diana Welch, now 38, has only the haziest memories of her own parents, both of whom she lost by the time she was 8 years old. e youngest of four, Welch’s oldest sister Amanda raised her—and presented her with a priceless high school graduation gift.
“It was a book of letters and photos from all the people who knew my parents well,” Welch says. “I still have it today—though it’s dog-eared and faded. Opening that book, even now, immediately reunites me with two people who left so long ago.”
at’s no surprise, says Han-nah Brencher, whose blog sends bundles of love letters to those in need: “We are in desperate need for tactile proof that we matter— letters give us that.”

“9/11 made us all consider our mortality—I certainly realized that nothing mat-tered more than my family.
“I’m not sure when I will present them—but I hope that when I do, they will be meaningful.”
Diana Welch, now 38, has only the haziest memories of her own parents, both of whom she lost by the time she was 8 years old. The youngest of four, Welch’s oldest sister Amanda raised her—and presented her with a priceless high school graduation gift.
“It was a book of letters and photos from all the people who knew my parents well,” Welch says. “I still have it today—though it’s dog-eared and faded. Opening that book, even now, immediately reunites me with two people who left so long ago.”
That’s no surprise, says Han-nah Brencher, whose blog sends bundles of love letters to those in need: “We are in desperate need for tactile proof that we matter— letters give us that.”
During WWII, John F. Kennedy’s boat was rammed by a Japanese
destroyer and stranded in the Solomon Islands. JFK wrote a note
on a coconut shell, which led to his rescue.

I’ve occasionally noticed what looks like a needle of ice protruding up from one of our ice cube trays. What could possibly cause this? It seems to defy the laws of gravity. —Chuck Eisenberg, St. Louis, Mo.After you fill the trays and put them in the freezer, a layer of ice will sometimes form with a little hole over one of the cubes, trap-ping the liquid below. As you know, water expands as it freezes—though not in a linear fashion. The right combination of cir-cumstances (such as a rigid container with vertical sides) and rapid freezing may cause the still-liquid water to be forced upward through the hole while it gets colder, freezes and ex-pands. The longer this pro-cess continues, the more the strange little stalagmite grows, until the liquid is gone and the whole thing finally freezes solid.

1. In a small bowl, mix together the mustards, brown sugar, molasses, cider vinegar, garlic and red pepper flakes.
2. Arrange the corned beef, potatoes, green beans and cabbage on a serving platter. Drizzle with ½ cup vinaigrette and top with the chives. Serves 4.
Inspired by the traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal
of corned beef and cabbage, and the fact that
March 24 is American Diabetes Association Alert
Day, here’s a chopped salad that’s fresh, light and
packed with flavor. Unlike the classic one-pot boiled
meal, our one-bowl delight is heavy on vegetables and
light on meat. The cabbage (a source of complex carbs
that can help control blood sugar) is raw and crunchy,
the green beans are tender-crisp and the tasty beef is
used more as a condiment. All in all, it’s a diabetes-
friendly dish that’s hearty, healthy and less than
400 calories a serving.
Lighten Up
Irish immigrants in the U.S. popularized corned beef, sold at many Jewish delis in New York City, as a less expensive salty substitute to the bacon they loved in their homeland.
Corned beef gets its name from the corn kernel-sized salt crystals originally used to preserve meat.
CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE SALAD
St. Paddy’s DayMustard Vinaigrette:
½ cup Dijon mustard
½ cup whole grain mustard
¼ cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp molasses
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
1 garlic clove, minced
1 tsp red pepper flakes
Salad:» 12 oz. cooked corned beef, trimmed of fat and chopped» 3 cups cooked Yukon Gold potatoes, chopped» 2 cups halved green beans or haricots verts, trimmed and blanched» 2 cups green cabbage, sliced» 1 Tbsp chopped chives
Abraham Lincoln chose corned beef, cabbage and potatoes for his inaugural
luncheon on March 4, 1861.
