Paradise English Boracay Island
In Focus…
There’s nothing like a good typhoon toraise my spirits. Why, oh why, you maywonder. As I see it, variety is the spice of lifeand that’s what you get during Habagat. Sureclear blue skies and hot weather are nice, butafter a while, Amihan wears on you; one day ithe same as the next. And, contrary to populaopinion, not every sunset is different. Bring oHabagat! You never know what you are goingto get, right Forrest?
Certainly it is common knowledge that thebest deals on Boracay are to be had duringHabagat, the (s)low season. The economics ofsupply and demand is clearly evident withdeals on food, accommodation, activities, souvenirs, and even teachers. Teachers??!! Yeteachers.
From a student’s perspective, clearly themore teacher time they can get, the better thedeal. Over the years during Habagat, the
number of students in our group classes hasbeen consistently lower than during Amihan .So what better deal can a student get thanmore teacher time and attention? From myperspective, I get the opportunity to spendmore time with each of my students and thushave a greater impact on their learningexperience. It’s a win-win situation. How oftedo you get one of those?
Well, it’s not all fun and games, so back tothe beach for something serious—aspectacular sunset, a distant lightning storm.

PARADISE ENGLISH OCTOBER 2013
Making Space…September in Boracay is renovation season. The onset of Habagat and the
decline in tourist arrivals prompt establishments to use this brief period
for building repair, renovation or expansion. Paradise English jumped on
the bandwagon to build more classrooms for the arrival of more students
in the last quarter of 2013 and Winter Camp in January next year.
Everyone is literally waiting for the dust to settle and the continual
pounding to wane. However, one delightful kid named Cherry, seems
unaffected by these. The 20-month old girl is the daughter of Korean
students Johnny and Elly. While her parents are learning English,
Cherry alongside her nanny, interacts with ease and confidence among
the PE family – teachers, support staff and students.
A happy child, she is quick to smile and slow to cry.
Already she has made lots of friends, breaking cultural
and language barriers like only a child can!
To all our gracious students who gamely put up with
the inconvenience of structural renovation, thank you!

PARADISE ENGLISH OCTOBER 2013
Riyan: One Fine Cook Teacher Jing Olid-Melendez
learns more about PE’sCafeteria Head Cook
Riyan Barrientos or Kuya
Riyan as everyone fondly
calls him, joined the PE
team last year. Before he
started working here, Kuya
Riyan was what we can call a
jack of all trades. Among his
earliest jobs include being a waiter in a then famous
Boracay disco bar in the 90’s. He was also a factory
worker, a grill man at a famous local fast food chain, astockman in a mall chain, and a storekeeper in yet
another fast food chain. He even drove passengers for a
fee to their destinations on his motorbike.
Riyan was born in Toledo, Nabas but has been residing
with his family on Boracay Island for 12 years now.
Married for 7 years to his wonderful wife whom he met
while he was employed at Gaisano’s Mall, he and
Nelma are raising 3 kids aged 7, 2 and 25 days. “On my
days off from work, I’m a very busy yaya (Filipino term
for nanny/babysitter),” he quipped.
From Monday to Friday, he is at the school cafeteria
busy preparing hearty and healthy dishes for lunch and
dinner. He confessed, however, that he didn’t actually
like cooking when he was younger. He preferred to just
play basketball and hang out with his friends. But
thanks to his father who had a small restaurant and
catering business, Riyan acquired some of his culinary
skills. After several years of working at various jobs, he
decided to get an HRM degree at Aklan College in 2001.
Holding a degree is an important key to a stable job that
supports his family, and valuing education is a legacy
he intends to pass on to his kids someday.
When asked what he likes most about working at
Paradise English, he quickly answered, “Aside from the
back-breaking work and erratic work shift in my
previous job, my bosses often shouted and criticized me.
Here, I am treated like part of a family.”
Teacher Liezl Mancawan revealswhat brings joy to Teacher Ejeanne
Vivacious, smart and charming.
These three words spring to my mind every time I see
one of Paradise English’s dynamic teachers, Ms.
Ejeanne Mae Datoon. Ejeanne is an English Literature
graduate from the University of the Philippines Iloilo
and has been working at the school for three years now.
She twice decided to leave and pursue graduate studiesbut some equally worthwhile things held her back. “ I
am quite happy working at PE. Meeting people from
various countries and learning about diverse cultures
is almost like me having traveled to many places. Our
school is like a miniature of the world! Teaching
students of different ages and levels, from toddlers to
high schoolers to professionals, is truly tough yet I’m
grateful because PE motivates me to develop my
teaching skills and aim for proficiency. Every day is a
welcome learning experience. Besides, I get along well
with my colleauges,” she said.
When I asked how island living has affected her life, she
happily smiled and proudly replied, “Gaining maturity
is one of the best things that happened to me here. I
learned to be independent. I am more confident in
battling problems and difficulties by myself. Working
at Paradise English is
elating. Making
Boracay Island my
home is bliss. I amless stressful and
when I get exhausted ,
the sea washes away
my weariness. I have
no regrets in choosing to
live and work here.”

I could not build any sentences before PE.
Now I can speak with everyone. There were
very helpful teachers, friendly staff,
enjoyable activities as well as friendly
Filipino people,
amazing beaches,
parties and nature.

My stay in Moalboal was great! The place
was fantastic, spectacular diving and very
good time. Really, my experience in the
Philippines was very positive and in fact,
back to my routine of Madrid was hardfor me. I sincerely hope to return and
visit other places that I left open in this
trip. Thank you very much again and keep
in touch. * Marta, Spain
