Paraffin wax Bath

Paint technique

Aim : To perform paraffin wax bath Paint technique for Lumbar region for acuteLumbago.

Apparatus:

1. Paraffin wax

2. Brush

3. Waxtub

4. Polythylene covers /plastic bag

5. Pillows

6. Towels

7. Test tubes -2

8. Hot water ,coldwater

9. Soap.

Procedure:

1. Greet the patient

2. Introduce yourself to the patient.

3. Take preliminery introduction and brief history from the patient.

4. Check and enquire for absolute and relative contraindications

5. Inspect the part.

6. Before starting the treatment, don’t forget to ask if he has applied any

linenments (ointments) on to the area of the skin to be treated.

7. Clean the area with soap and water.

8. Wipe the area with towel and dry it

9. Check the temperature of the paraffin wax (always between 40-45⁰c).

10.With the help of test tubes (one with hot water and one with cold water)

check the sensitivity of the skin over the area to be treated.

11.Explain the procedure to the patient and effects and expereince of sensation

to be felt to the patient.

12.Expose the lumbar region and drape.

13.Maintain privacy of the patient if requested by the Screen .

Technique :

1. Place a Polythelene cover good enough to cover the whole circumference of 

the waist of the patient on the couch.

2. Make the patient lie on the couch in prone position with lower abdomen

touching the polythelene cover.

3. Adjust the postion to make the patient fell comfortable by placing the pillows.

4. Expose the lumbar region and drape with towels.

5. Paint a layer of paraffin onto the lumbar region of the back.covering the

vertebra and paraspinal muscles.

6. Wait for the layer of paraffin to become opaque.

7. Paint on another layer of paraffin no larger than the first layer.

8. Repeat the same for 6-10 times.

9. Cover the area by the folding the plastic cover which is placed before and

then by towelling.

10.Advice the patient not to move .

11.After 10-15 min discard the wax .

12.Clean the area .

Winding off:

1. Inspect the treatment area for any signs of adverse effects and found any

document it.

Home advice:
