For the second time in Norway, a seminar dedicated to Parametric Design/visual programming is specifically arranged for the construction industry. Several Norwegian and international speakers will show how they combine the use of different visual programming tools to solve challenging and time-consuming work in the design process. Such tools allow for completely new opportunities in design optimization of buildings and other constructions by adding rule-based relationship and logic, rather then doing it manually. When you now can use standard software based on visual programming, and connecting it to Building Information Models (BIM), it is also made available to everyone. Lectures are held by both architects, engineers and industrial designers who use many different types of software to achieve their goals. The seminar aims to display the wide range of applications and possibilities with parametric de- sign, regardless of software providers. But there will be the opportunity to meet representatives from Robert McNeel & Associates, the creator of Rhino and Grasshopper, among others PARAMETRIC DESIGN SEMINAR Oslo 12th of February 2019 LOCATION Felix konferansesenter, Bryggetorget 3 Oslo, Norway DATE 12.02.2019 TIME 09:00 -16:00 Registration starts at 08:00 PRICE NOK 1490,- inc.

The seminar aims to display the wide range of applications and possibilities with parametric de-sign, regardless of software providers. But there will be the opportunity to meet representatives from Robert McNeel & Associates, the creator of Rhino and Grasshopper, among others

Håvard Vasshaug - Bad Monkey Co-founder of Bad Monkeys, M.Sc. Structural Engineering

09:00 – 09:10 Welcome by Frode Saltkjelvik, GRAPHISOFT Norway

Bollinger + Grohmann Ingenieure is an engineering consultancy with nearly 30 years’ experience and expertise in structural engineering and design. Founded in 1983, today Bollinger + Grohmann has more than 250 employees in Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Paris, Rome, Oslo and Melbourne. The projects of B+G include the Deichman Library in Oslo, Munch Museum in Oslo, European Central Bank in Frankfurt/Main, the Vienna DC Tower in Austria, the Rolex Learning Center of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland or the Dalian International Conference Centre in China. Bollinger and Grohmann has together with Clemens Preisinger also developed Karamba3D, a parametric structural engineering tool which provides accurate analysis of spatial trusses, frames and shells.

Flemming Højbjerre Sørensen - Bollinger + Grohmann IngenieureStructural engineer

Rhinoceros® developed by Robert McNeel & Associates, is the market leader in industrial design modeling software. For designers who are exploring new shapes using generative algorithms, Grasshopper® is a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3D modeling tools. Grasshopper requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but still allows designers to build form generators from the simple to the awe-inspiring. Carlos will give an overview of Rhino and Grasshoppers new developments, including SubD modeling.

Carlos Perez – McNeel EuropeHead of sales, marketing and business development, McNeelEMEA region. Food4rhino product manager

10:10 – 10:30 Pause

11:30 – 12:30 Lunsj

Matthias Stracke - Bollinger + Grohmann IngenieureDipl.-Ing. / CEO Oslo, Norway

John Haddal Mork - Rallar ArkitekterPhD-candidate NTNU and Architect MNAL

John Haddal Mork is a PhD-candidate at NTNU working with parametric timber structures. The goal is to develop a parametric timber toolkit that simplifies the process of designing advanced structures. Special focus is to better integrate structural and manufacturing principles in all phases of design development.

Håvard Vasshaug is co-founder of Bad Monkeys, and a specialist in use of visual programming tools like Dynamo and Grasshopper and connecting them to BIM. Håvard has worked as an Engineer and Technology Manager for many years, in companies like Rambøll, DARK and Snøhetta.

10:50 – 11:30 Developing structures by using parametric design tools – projects review

09:10 – 09:40 Breaking the rules of standardized design methods, by mass-producing custom scripts

09:40 – 10:10 Simplifying the process of designing advanced timber structures by using parametric design

10:30 – 10:50 Rhinoceros - Computational Design, Digital Fabrication and Development Platform

PROGRAM

Joakim Wiig Hoen – Void [ computational design studio ] Partner and Architect MNAL

Stephen Melville - Format Engineers UKBEng MSc DIC CEng MIStructE FRSA Director

14:20 – 15:00 The Physics of art

16:00 – 16:05 Summary by Frode Saltkjelvik, GRAPHISOFT Norway

Void is an interdisciplinary design studio working in the intersection between design, architecture, art and tech- nology. They pursue experimental design that ranges from data visualization and scenography to interactive instal-lations and architecture. In 2018 Void was awarded silver for their project with ANTI Bergen at the European Design Awards.

Stephen Melville is a founding Director of Format. Formerly a Director of Whitbybird Engineers then Design Director of Ramboll UK. Stephen created Format with the goal of establishing an Engineering design studio which considered Structural Engineering, geometry modelling, digital optimization, fabrication, research and education as a seamless entity and as a bridge between the worlds of Science, art, architecture and design.

Franz Forsberg – LINK ArkitekturAdvisor in Sustainable Environmental Design

12:30 – 13:15 Let there be light!

13:15 – 14:00 Deconstructing the BIM model

GRAPHISOFT’s Grasshopper-ARCHICAD live connection opens a new level of intelligent workflows between the two design environments (algorithmic design and BIM). Akos will show how can you use your BIM model as a geo-metrical and data hub and utilize Rhino & Grasshopper to enhance your design. Learn also how can you deconstruct your BIM model to extract useful information out of it to automate repetitive and boring tasks during the design process.

Akos Karoczkai – GRAPHISOFT SE, HunagaryBIM consultant and Parametric Design expert

14:00 – 14:20 Break

In LINK Arkitektur, we focus on delivering projects with high architecture quality. One of the tools of our Sustaina-bility Team in the design and evaluation process is a set of scripts allowing to deconstruct BIM projects into a BEM (Building Energy Modeling). We use then the flexible environment of visual programing to do test-runs and provide feedback to the designers regarding among others energy use, daylight, views and energy production.

15:30 – 16:00 Parametric BIM for Bridges

Aas-Jakobsen is a leading building and construction consultancy, specialising in civil engineering and employing highly qualified experts in a range of disciplines. We look for contracts involving challenges within a single specia-lity or spanning multiple disciplines. Andreas and Jan Håvard will show how to get increased efficiency with para-metric models of bridges, combining the tools of Rhino-Grasshopper and Tekla. This in a mix of practical examples from ongoing infrastructure projects.

Andreas Bjune Kjølseth – Dr. Ing. A. Aas-Jakobsen ASMSc Structural Engineer

15:00 – 15:30 From BIM to BEM, a workflow to perform environmental analysis by using visual programming
