“The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the car-ing that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.” ~ Audrey Hepburn

Halima YousuffCreative & Art Director,

I am excited. I say that I am excited often, but that’s because I am excited often! I see really good things for Pardes Magazine in the new year. I’d like to start off, though, by giving heartfelt thanks to all of the past year’s

contributors. I’d list you all by name but that becomes really difficult considering that there was such a huge outpouring of interest and enthusiasm and just plain great work from so many. The start of a new year always finds me pondering this journey called life. The process usually begins by conducting a personal inventory about accomplishments and failures of the past year, finding gratitude for where I am today, and making new resolutions and aligning my intentions for the year ahead. This year was

no different, except the lists appear to be a little longer—and a lot broader. I’m a big believer that as individuals we have the power to make profound changes in the world. even the smallest steps we take to create a more sustainable life can have a profound impact on the entire planet when multiplied by the billions of us who inhabit it. The beginning of the calendar year is at its heart a fantasy of newness and clean slates—representing the chance to do things differently and with more attention to purpose. In reality, it’s also one of the most challenging times of the year for many of us, as we return from the holidays and fly straight into the plate-glass window of an overbooked schedule. As I talk with friends and colleagues about plans, the word “hectic” keeps coming up, and I think we should find that a little worrisome. A hectic fever is what you get when you have consumption. It looks a lot like excitement, but ultimately, you’re consumed. You won’t find any New Year’s resolutions, but you will encounter many different angles and changes. It’s up to you to decide how to fill your days.

If you’re anything like me, then sticking to that to-do list is more of a dream than a reality. Inevitably, life takes over. Weekdays are busy, and free weekends are scarce. Then suddenly, a month, a season, a year is gone, and half of those resolutions are tossed out with the latest fad diets and empty journals. That could-should nuance makes a difference to me. As much as I want to say I’ll do everything and go everywhere, it’s nice to know that there’s room for a little disorganization, for a few missed resolutions. This is, after all, just a glimpse of the months ahead. And some of the best things about life don’t go on a calendar. Our readership continues to grow nicely. We know there are many in the community who have something to say, and we know our readers would benefit if you would like to contribute an article or opinion piece to our editions. We are here for you with thousands of readers.

get in touch...We want to hear from you be it a kind word or even how we may have fallen short of your expectations, we love hearing from our readers. Each comment is important to Pardes magazine and we appreciate the opportunity to address any questions, comments or concerns.

What Caught Sight in 2014?

2014 was quite a unique time in the records of Bollywood. From record-breaking hits to the Khans ruling the domain of filmdom, news has always been on the list.

There also has been an increase in female-oriented films such as “Dedh Ishqiya,” “Queen,” “Revolver Rani,” “Mary Kom” and “Mardaani.” There have been films that came in riding on a big budget but bombed at the box office. Here are the two most interesting things that grabbed attention in 2014.

• The newgeneration is attracting attention:

If you thought Ranbir Kapoor was the only young contender for the Khans, then you were mistaken. 2014 has brought many youngsters into the limelight. While Arjun Kapoor caught the limelight with “2 States,” Varun Dhawan stole hearts with “Humpty

Sharma Ki Dulhania.” Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone have also found good competition in Shraddha Kapoor and Ali Bhatt.

• Khans still rulethe roost:

Shah Rukh Khan’s “Happy New Year” and Salman’s Jai Ho plus Kick scored Rs.925 crore in world business. Amir Khan’s PK has already generated Rs. 200 crores on its eleventh day. Thus, it can be concluded that the Khans who are only a year behind the age of 50 are still the kings of the Indian filmdom.

2014 has been quite a year for film journalists and box office analysts. The year is coming to an end and what remains to be seen is whether the next year will herald success for the newcomers or whether the Khans will remain the lords of the screen.

Priya alavadi GuPtaBeautiful on the inside and on the outside, Priya Alavadi Gupta has won the title

of Mrs. South Asia International 2015.

Born in Jaipur, India, and raised in Delhi and Pune, Priya is happily married and has settled in South Florida. IT Project Manager by profession,

Priya feels ecstatic and proud for her title of Mrs. South Asia International 2015. Priya will represent South Asia at the Mrs. International 2015 pageant on July 24 and 25 in Jacksonville, Florida, this year. Priya, highlighting the significance of the Mrs. International pageant, mentions, “The International Pageant system has been developed to promote today’s married women, their accomplishments, and commitment to family and marriage. Around the world women are finding this system to be an opportunity to work with their husband and family to become positive role models.”

Talking about preparation, she mentions, “I took the title seriously from the time I enrolled myself. I thoroughly enjoyed the process I went through as I revamped myself, grew and won the title.” Since the title is based on family values and the platform to give back to society, Priya has been actively working on the platform of sexual and domestic abuse against women, which bagged her the prestigious title. Priya is very happy and is looking forward to using her title to help millions of women around the globe.

Priya believes that winning the title wouldn’t have been possible without the support of her husband, family and in-laws: “My husband and in-laws supported me and their belief in me further motivated me to work harder towards winning the title—and now I have it.”

Name: Priya Alavadi GuptaLives in FloridaAbout Me: Crowned Mrs. South Asia

International 2015 and an IT Project Manager by profession. Will represent South Asia in Mrs. International 2015 in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 24 and 25 2015.

Strengths: Confident, optimistic and attitude to never give up. I believe that with perseverance and self-belief, one can achieve everything in life.

Favorite Saying: Attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an adventure – Bib Bitchin. I believe that with a positive attitude one can convert struggles and challenges to opportunities and be a winner in life.

Guiding Principle: Push your limitations as you live and die for others, which implies that I keep challenging my limitations and improving my skills and talents. As I share these, I am able to help and inspire others to do the same.

Favorite Word: Courage. Courage encompasses your strength, hope and faith. Having courage to be better and to do better relies on your strength, your hope and your faith to endure and succeed.

Favorite Color: My favorite color is green, as I am a very optimistic and determined person. The color green represents growth, freshness and hope.

Why does the idea of pageants appeal to you?

Personal comfort: one should always choose the style in which they are most comfortable. I love dressing up in bright colors and bling as that’s my way of providing joy to life. I also love dressing up in Indian outfits such as saree, lehenga and salwar kameez as they make women look very beautiful.

TIPS FOR WOMEN TO LEAD AN EMPOWERED LIFE

I think the first step of women’s empowerment is for women to empower themselves. Women should have equal opportunities of education because education is the foundation of leading a self-reliant life. Women should learn to love themselves and be confident in whatever career path they choose for themselves.

What are your future plans? Most people in their 20s consider winning

pageants as their entry into the world of glamor. For me, the idea has always been a part of the glamor world along with giving back to society. Mrs. International pageant system is designed for married women who can showcase their accomplishments and contribute back to the community, which to me is the best thing about this pageant system.

How to Beat Bad BreathIf you eat without checking the quantity of food that gets inside your body, you will end up having bad breath.

Food items like smoked salmon, walnuts and Brazil nuts are a major source of bad breath because they produce a kind of bacteria that emits sulfur. This sulfur-producing bacteria is the cause of bad odor in the mouth. Eggs, meat, dairy products and beans are other sources of sulfur-producing bacteria. So, when you are piling things your plate, make sure that other kinds of food are also there.

01

Mix and match your food:

Parsley and mint leaves adorn the tables of the most festive season parties. It is suggested that you do not avoid chewing a parsley leaf. The deodorizing effect of parsley and mint are known around the world. Chlorophyll present in these green leaves helps to kill bad smells.

02

Don’t let the parsley go:

There is one thing that we tend to forget: bad breath. Here are a few eating tips to keep bad breath at bay so that you don’t get embarrassed in front of a bustling crowd.

Pardes magazine VOL. 5, eDITION #1

Eating too much is harmful, but chewing is not. Chewing keeps saliva flowing in your mouth, so that it can fight bad-breath-producing bacteria.

But, if you think that strong flavors in mint also serve the same purpose, you are wrong. In fact, sugar present in those gums acts as fuel for the offensive class of bacteria.

Whenever you are partying, make sure that you are equipped with a mouth freshener. The chlorhexidine and active ingredients like zinc in an oral rinse will help to bad breath for almost half a day. You should also brush at least three times a day. A combination of oral rinse and timely brushing can ensure protection from malodor.

04

Keep chewing:

A diet of fresh fruits and vegetables helps to keep your buccal cavity fresh and free of odor-creating bacteria. They increase the flow of saliva inside your mouth, thus keeping your tongue and teeth clean.

03

Fruits and vegetables:

Acidic drinks feed the bacteria that causes bad breath in your mouth. If you lessen the amount of acidic drink or food you consume, the level of bad breath production will be checked.

05

Avoid citrus juices:

Fabric:To serve the

purpose of wearing an impressive evening wear, you can use velvet as the material of your coat. A velvet blazer or coat will give you that different look you are trying to obtain. Whether you are getting ready for the red carpet or a rock n’ roll party, it’s going to work wonders for you.

You can also try a jacquard jacket if velvet does not suit your taste. It is bound to attract some admiring looks.

Hues:If you are seeking

a braver color than black, your first choice should be a tuxedo in midnight blue. With time, you can move on to burgundy or dark green. Of late, many celebrities have tried these daring options and have made a positive statement.

For making a mark with an evening dress, you need to carry minimum accessories and maintain the formal look. If you combine a double-breasted jacket with wide lapels and wear it with a chambay dress shirt, onlookers will be impressed with your outfit. M

Dinner Jackets:

Jackets can look stylish if you wear them over a traditional combination of black trouser and white shirt. A jacket with bold colors and patterns will help you make a difference. If the party you are about to attend has a dress code, bordering somewhere between casual and smart, you can match a dark denim with a formal jacket.

Trousers:Most of the time,

people tend to give all the importance to the upper half of the body and tend to ignore the legs. It is not necessary for all trousers to be black. You can match an interesting-looking trouser with a not-so-attractive shirt or jacket. But, make sure that the adventurous appearance of your trouser does not truncate the executive feel of the outfit.

It is true that clothes create an image of the person wearing them. But, it is essential to remember that it is your confidence level that is going to shine through in a gathering. If you are happy with what you have put on, others will like it too.M

A tuxedo is the most impres-sive thing a man can wear. This timeless wear has male written all over it. You can rest

assured that nothing can make you look more handsome than a tux. However, to get away from the clas-sic black color tuxedo, you might try something unconventional. Mentioned below are the ways in which a tux can be modified in terms of fabric, hue and the style of wear to make an impact on an evening gath-ering.

A

new study at MIT has proved that a family of proteins that binds RNA regulates cancer, especially a subtype of breast cancer. These proteins, commonly called Musashi proteins, have the capability to bring cells to a state in which the latter increase in number. Previous research has proved that this kind of conversion in cancer cells and at the time of development of the embryo is caused by proteins that turn genes off and on. But, the recent research has proved that Musashi proteins are also responsible for the above-mentioned changes. There are around 500 RNA-binding proteins in human cells. These proteins

monitor messenger RNA and have an impact on gene expression.

Messenger RNA is the molecule that carries the instructions

of the DNA to different parts of the cell. This study has brought to light the fact that RNA processing takes place at many

points in a cell. Therefore, RNA-binding proteins can

monitor RNA at each of the points where it is processed.

Proteins

Monitoring the state of the cells:Before this research, Musashi proteins were utilized

to understand the presence of neural cells, as the proteins are abundantly found in these cells. The proteins are also seen in an advanced version of brain cancer called glioblastoma and also in tumors.

The levels of Musashi proteins in neural stem cells were maneuvered, and the effect of the process on other genes was observed. This observation revealed that the genes that were affected by the proteins were associated with a method by which cells tend to move apart and start getting into other tissues. The process is known as epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition or EMT.

Since, EMT is significant in breast cancer, the research team searched for Musashi proteins in non-neural tissue cancers. The study showed that these RNA-binding proteins are expressed most clearly in luminal B tumor, which is a kind of breast tumor. These tumors grow at a very fast pace.

When the scientists involved in the research killed the proteins in breast cancer cells, the cells were compelled to come out of the epithelial state. The research also showed that if the Musashi proteins were boosted artificially in mesenchymal cells, the latter were transformed into an epithelial condition. The researchers came to the decision that Musashi proteins maintained the epithelial condition and productive condition of cancer cells.

The researchers have thus concluded that Musashi proteins, indeed, monitor the change in condition of the cells. They have also remarked that the study has not yet reached the state where it can be said that the Musashi proteins can be targeted by cancer drugs, but they can help in understanding the state of cancer cells.

Golf is one game that is said to have brought business and pleasure at par. In fact, according to estimates, among the 25 million golfers in the U.S., one-fourth of them are top-ranking executives in companies. A report states that about 90% of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies play golf. However, there is an issue with this highly popular business sport: Not many women play golf.

The Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour is older than the Gold Association Tour. According to the records of the National Golf Foundation, although women have been playing golf for years, the number of female golfers since 1980 has increased from 21% to 22%. Also, at 17% of the total number of rounds, women play fewer rounds than men.

Mentioned below are six reasons why women should pay golf.

• Ithelpsincareerbuilding:Golf is utilized as a business tool by many. It can be a device

to create a good relationship with your clients and also a way to spend quality time with your superiors. A survey has found that

80% of golfers find it an effective tool for growth in business.

• Youcangetoutofyouroffice:Most business golf games are played either in the middle of a

weekday or on the weekend. Nothing can be more rejuvenating than coming out of your four-walled office and enjoying some rounds of golf.

• Itisconsideredanexercise:Playing golf is a good way to burn calories. Each round of

golf can help in burning about 1,500 calories. A good game of golf gives your body the same level of exertion that you get by walking for 5 hours.

• Youcansocialize:Besides being an effective business-development tool, golf

also aids in socializing with friends and family. The handicapping system of scoring makes it suitable for people of all abilities to

Why Should Women

• Internationalstatus:Being an international sport, it is not difficult to find a course

to play. There are 35,000 golf courses all over the world. Golf not only helps in conducting business of an international stature, but it also renders an enhanced experience with your family.

• Pickingupapparelisfun:Golfing apparel is a matter of high fashion for female golfers.

Fashion-conscious women love to pick up the newest golf apparel.

Don’t waste your time anymore. If you love golf but have never tried it, then it is time to buy a golf club.

have. The popular Pakistani series “Humsafar,” which used to

be aired on Zee Zindagi, has stolen the hearts of Indian viewers. The onscreen chemistry between Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan in the serial has collected lots of accolades.

Her character in the serial “Khirad” was a breath of fresh air in Indian television. Neither was Khirad a melodramatic character, nor was she an epitome of emotional shambles. She elegantly portrayed the role of a woman going through an emotional turmoil.

Mahira started her film career in Pakistan with the movie “Bol.” However, Indian critics and movie analysts noticed her performance in “Humsafar.” She has all the factors that can make her a Bollywood diva.

Mahira is not a novice in the world of acting. She is an established actor in Pakistan and with the serial she has made herself quite visible in the Indian film industry.

Actresses like Deepika and Anushka, who made their debut with Shah Rukh Khan, have today reached the zenith of success. From what she has given to the Pakistani film industry, it can be deduced that her contribution to Bollywood will be equally lauded.

Dry your live plan by wiping it:

A live plans is the biggest allergic trigger in a house. It emits mold spores into your home. As a remedy, you can wipe it, so that it is dry when it enters your home. provide some sort of relief from the molds.

Avoid highly scented items in your home:

If you have a sensitive respiratory system, it is advisable to avoid candles, flowers and potpourri with strong fragrances. Flowers like gladioli, lilies, daisies, carnations, tulips and snapdragons have low smell and are suitable for this purpose.

impurities. These plants—also called scrubbing plants—help to keep away impurities and improve the quality of air. If are individuals suffering from asthma or allergies in your home, you can keep plants like Chinese evergreen, golden pathos, bamboo palm, aloe, English ivy, etc.

Control the humidity of your home:If you are planning to make your room moisture-

laden, then it is better to keep a device to measure the

humidity in the room. You can buy a cheap hygrometer and make sure that the moisture content in the room does not go above 50%.

Avoid using sprays:Snow sprays have a tendency to deepen respiratory

problems if you are already suffering from asthma or related issues.

Keep items clean:Before using them, wipe clean the holly, mistletoe,

bells and balls to remove dust that has gathered on them.

Keep your room free of all agents that might cause allergic reactions. It’s the time you need to keep yourself hale and hearty. So, keep your home clean and dust-free to make the most of the season. Enjoy!

The price of gold was reduced in recent times. This reduction had an impact on the margins and realized prices of prime gold mining companies like Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining. The initial nine months of 2014 witnessed a decrease of about 11% in the average realized prices of gold for both the companies. The decrease in realized prices was a result of the closing down of the Quantitative Easing program of the Federal Reserve. In 2015, the Federal Reserve is expecting an increase in the rate of interest because of the improvement in the U.S. economy. The low prices of gold are also a result of the above-mentioned expectations. The common perception is that a hike in rate of interest is going to bring down the demand for investing in gold. On the other hand, investment in assets that give interest will gain ground.

But, in the course of time, the development of economic conditions will help to increase the price of gold. The demand for gold jewelry is related to

the improvement in economic conditions, more so in developing nations, where most of the gold jewelry is bought.

Here, we will discuss the latest trends in the demand for gold jewelry.

Demand for gold jewelryDemand for gold jewelry is

just one of the four reasons for the gold demand. The other three categories are industry demand for gold, gold as a source of investment and investment in gold by the central bank. Until September 2014, the demand for buying gold jewelry constituted around 55% of the total demand for gold. Traditional customs are responsible for the demand of gold jewelry in many nations like India and China. In these countries, purchasing gold is a practice and is considered beneficial during festivals and marriages. Moreover, the demand for jewelry made of gold increases with a rise in income level of an individual. In the year 2012, India and China accounted for nearly 56% of the demand for gold jewelry in the world.
