Dyslexia Southwest 2017 Parent Conference ½ day

The half-day parent conference is customized for parents of dyslexic learners. Local experts and SWIDA board members will facilitate 3 core sessions designed to increase awareness of the social & emotional impacts of dyslexia, build understanding of what kind of instruction has been found effective for teaching language skills, and inform

strategies which can be used to support dyslexic learners at home.

Parents attending this ½-day conference will participate in the following sessions:

(1) Experience Dyslexia A simulation experience and sensitivity training in which participants rotate among learning stations that simulate various tasks encountered by individuals with dyslexia in the classroom or workplace. Facilitators: SWIDA Board Members

(2) What is an appropriate intervention for my child with dyslexia? Understanding dyslexia is one thing, but then what? What kind of intervention does a child with dyslexia need? What is taught? And how is it taught to someone who is intervention-resistant? This session will introduce parents to the required components of any intervention, the Orton-Gillingham principles of instruction that should guide that intervention, and the continuum of services needed by a wide range of students with dyslexia. Facilitator: Angie Henderson

(3) Structuring Your Home for Executive Function Many children with dyslexia need to be explicitly taught and supported in using executive function strategies like organizing space, organizing ideas for writing, visualization, prioritizing, planning, goal setting, and reflecting. This one-hour session will help parents understand the importance of executive function and how they can structure their home (space and time) to support their students’ learning. Specific strategies and resources will be discussed. Facilitator: Karen Lindeen

***Parent conference sessions will be followed by a pizza lunch with the student conference participants.
