National Online Safety
This #WakeUpWednesday we’re highlight the risks associated with Doki Doki Literature Club; a visual novel game with suicide themes and a psychological horror plot, advised by its makers as 'not suitable for children'. The game is believed to have been downloaded more than two million times in the first four months and has come under scrutiny in the UK media after a father said he felt the game had ‘dragged his son in’ and contributed to his death in Greater Manchester in early 2018. Police and the coroner investigating the 15-year-old’s death have urged parents to be vigilant and called the game a ‘risk to children and young people’. We have been alerted to this game and have created this guide to help support and raise awareness of the online safety risks associated with it. https://twitter.com/natonlinesafety/status/1014516601281007616 Many thanks for your continued support and for helping us to achieve a safer online world for children. Message from Mr Brown
I have received a letter from the Fire Service which should make the whole KES community all feel proud of one of our students.
On 26th June, Miglius Girdzijauskas, Year 9, was in St. Edmundsbury Road and noticed smoke coming from a window in one of the flats. Without regard for his own safety, he climbed in through an open window and turned off the cooker ring that was heating an unattended saucepan.
Two fire crews attended the incident and were met by Miglius who gave a full account of what he had done.
He is receiving a certificate from the fire brigade and I will be presenting him with a Principal's Award for his courage.
Well done Miglius!
Parents' Forum 28/6/18 The main discussion topic at the Parents' Forum last week was student reports and how we can make these more easily understandable and useful for parents. Parents' excellent suggestions at the meeting will be accommodated into our reports next academic year.
Please do come along to the Parents' Forum meetings in the new academic year. These meetings are half termly, positive and productive and a good opportunity to discuss current issues in school and consider ways to make further improvements.
Year 7 Parents: Mrs Wright has now left the academy and I would like to thank her for her hard work at KES with many groups of students over the years. We wish her well for the future.
Mrs Nicholls has already begun her work as the Progress Leader for the year group. Please raise any Year 7 queries with her.
Parent Survey: I would be grateful for parental feedback on these two questions to help our work on teaching and learning:
Does your child receive appropriate homework for his/her age and are there any changes you would like to see in this area?
Is the level of challenge in the work that your child is set in school about right, too hard or too easy?
Please do let me know your views on these questions to help our current work [email protected]
Humanities Work of the Week

Mrs Watson
Year 8 – Mrs Stonach
Last week saw the big MFL extravaganza of the year – the year 8 X factor production; this involves pupils from
different language classes performing songs in either French or Spanish. The judges, myself, Mr Waring, Mrs
Nicholls, Mr McNeil and Simon Rowe from KLFM had a fantastic time, lots of giggles and some slightly damaged ear
drums by the end. Well done to all year 8s who took part and especially the winners – please see the statement
from Mrs Hawkins.
“A huge thanks to all involved (or disturbed!) by this afternoon's X Factor - it was a greatly successful afternoon
again and the students were a real credit. 8B2 Spanish were this year's very worthy winners so please, if you see
any of them, congratulate them on their hard work!!” – Mrs Hawkins
Last week’s student awards went to….
MFL – Liam Olley
PE – Kym Hutchinson and Simeon Vonk
From Mr McNeil – fantastic news:
The year 8 cricket squad won the West Norfolk Cricket School League on Tuesday with a big win over Litcham. What
was most pleasing about this win was that our two best batsman both got ducks (0) so the rest of the team stepped
up and chased down the 80 runs we needed. The hard work at North Runcton for the past 4 weeks, at our club link
coaching, is certainly paying off. I am very proud of the progress and development of all the squad - please
congratulate them.
This week pupils were given their options sheets. If you have any queries or concerns about what your child has
been offered, please contact Miss Backham ASAP.
As we reach the end of the term, you will have been made aware of some structural changes. I will no longer be
Head of Year from September. The academic lead of year 9 will be Dr Tadikonda, she will be the link between home
and school and the main contact person for your child. If you have any questions or concerns for the next two
weeks, please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to liaise with Dr Tadikonda and yourselves to support your
child into year 9.
Many thanks and I hope the sun continues to shine…..
Online safety and Social Media Advice
We all know the power of the internet and social media. It can teach us things that we never knew about and
allows us to stay in touch with loved ones near and far. However, there can be a darker side to the internet and
social media. I have had to deal with a number of instances where social media is being used incorrectly by a
number of KS3 students.
Please have a conversation with your sons and daughters about the importance of staying safe on the internet and
social media. There are some excellent websites that provide some great information about how to keep children
safe online and how to use social media responsibly. Your internet service providers all provide a range of
information that helps.
Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the weather

A message from Mr Chung
Hi everyone, as Mr Brown mentions above, Miglius Girdzijauskas, noticed smoke coming from a window in
one of the flats. Without regard for his own safety, he climbed in through an open window and turned off
the cooker ring that was heating an unattended saucepan.
Two fire crews attended the incident and were met by Miglius who gave a full account of what he had done.
He is receiving a certificate from the fire brigade and I will be giving him a Principal's Award for his courage.
Please do congratulate Miglius when you see him.
I have spoken to his mum tonight to say how proud we are of him.”
To put this in perspective he went above and beyond and stopped a house from burning down and
potentially saved the lives of the residents.

Sports Results & Fixtures
Last night the U16 Cricket squad played Eastbourne College at Castle Rising CC (thanks to Darren
Clarke/Olly Denton for sorting the pitch / ground), in our penultimate Barbados Cricket Warm up game.
Ex pupil, Rob Ferley, is touring Norfolk with Eastbourne and it was a pleasure to play a game against his
school and lads - KES won by 17 runs, which was even better!
However, the best news of the night and the week was that Ex Deputy Head and current Trustee of KES
Academy, Mr John Smallwood, made the trip up to Castle Rising Cricket Club to watch the lads and see
myself, Rob Ferley and Olly Denton. We were all so pleased to see him, looking so well & healthy. And
yes, he still had some words of wisdom for us, put across in a way that only he could! What an amazing
man and still passionate about the school and cricket in the local area.
Our year 7 cricket team got their first win of year against springwood this week. Currently playing in the
year 8 league, this season has been a learning curve for the boys. In both county cups they played two
private schools (Norwich and Wymondham), schools where many on their teams make up the county
team.
The boys have worked hard over the last few weeks at training and also the club link with North Runcton
CC (thanks Ross) and last night the RESILIENCE of the boys was proven by the victory. It was their last
game of the season too.
A few special mentions; Rhys Wymer scored 32 not out, Ben Henry bowled beautifully and Sidney Gray
took a great catch off their best player.
THANK YOU to all students and staff at KES Academy for walking 1,877 miles for charity last week!
Amazing effort from ALL at the academy!
Thanks!
Can we please send thanks to all parents, staff, pupils and the local community who have helped with our
fundraising journey over the past 2 years for the Barbados Cricket tour. We have raised £6,900 – a
fantastic team effort. Thanks for all your time and effort with the 17 events/fundraisers we have put on,
much appreciated.

Some of you will have watched the fantastic
County Lines performance which toured Norfolk’s
secondary schools at the beginning of the school
year. With summer holidays just round the corner
we would like to remind that this is a time when
many young people are going out on their own
and could potentially end up in a situation being
befriended by someone who’s intention is to use
them for drug trafficking. If you spot the signs
(new ‘unhealthy’ friendships, secrecy, additional
mobile phone, more unexplained cash) please do
not hesitate to call 101 to raise your concerns.
Summer holidays are a great time of year for
children to get out and about but the long
summer holidays can also mean some children
will at times be looking to entertain themselves.
This can sometimes lead to them becoming
involved in Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) in various
forms including hoax calling emergency services.
This could have devastating consequences as it
can take away resources from a genuine
emergency. Attached to the newsletter is a hoax
call video and we would appreciate if you could
take the time to share this with your students
before the end of term.
It has come to our attention some schools across the country have been receiving threating hoax emails. Please be vigilant
when dealing with emails and DO NOT open any emails or their attachments if you are unsure about the source of the email.
If you receive any threatening emails please forward to Norfolk Police on [email protected]
Some of you may be aware of Fortnite making the national news over recent months and unfortunately not always for the better. This is a
very popular game with young people but one of the main risks is the chat feature where they can chat to anyone they are playing with.
Please think about reminding your students about how they can stay safe online over the summer holidays. The NSPCC has highlighted this
game as a stranger danger risk. Further advice regarding this app and others can be found on the NSPCC net aware website.

July 2018 Welcome to our second Safer Schools Newsletter.
We hope you have all been enjoying the lovely weather and are now looking forward to the
impending summer holidays.
With that in mind we just want to raise some current issues that can be heightened at this time
of the year.
As always please feel free to share any of the relevant information with your school community.

Festival Too Fundraising Family Walk – Sunday 8th July at 11am King’s Lynn Town Guides hope to raise hundreds of pounds for Festival Too with a brand-new Family Friendly Historic Town Walk. The walk will take place at 11.00am on Sunday 8th July and it is hoped to attract local families and introduce them to the rich history of King’s Lynn. Bob Price, Chair of the Guides, said “Most people who attend our walks are from out of town, but we do get some local people as well. We often hear locals say ‘Well, I never knew that!’ when they attend one of our walks. It’s really rewarding when we take people who have lived in Lynn all their lives but don’t realise just how much there is to see right on their own door-steps.” Bob went on to say, “Festival Too has been going for over 30 years and is an important part of life in the town. It is keeping alive a tradition of using the Tuesday Market Place as an entertainment venue, as it has been for over 800 years. We’re pleased to be working with the Festival Too committee to raise awareness of the historical aspects of the town and the work of the Town Guides, at the same time as raising funds to help keep the entertainment going” To encourage families with children to take part in the walk, the Town Guides have introduced a range of brand new, family-friendly worksheets, developed by an experienced primary school teacher and suitable for children of all ages to complete when attending a walk with an adult. There are 3 different worksheets that are progressively more difficult, so that there is something for children of all ages. The walk lasts approximately 2 hours at a strolling pace and goes from Saturday Market Place to Tuesday Market Place. To guarantee a place on the walk, tickets can be booked in advance from the Tourist Information Centre at the Custom House or, if places are still available, you can simply turn up and pay on the day. The charge is £5.00 for adults and £1.00 for accompanied children, including a free worksheet. For further information on all walks and to book tickets or arrange a private tour, please contact The Tourist Information Centre at The Custom House on 01553 763044 or check details on our brand new website www.kingslynntownguides.co.uk or follow us on facebook https://www.facebook.com/kingslynntownguides/#
