Information

HGS Parent Handbook We would like to point you in the direction of the HGS Parent Handbook which can be found at: https://www.harrogategrammar.co.uk/parents/daily-life/parent-handbook/

The Handbook contains all pertinent information for your child starting back at school and we would like to draw particular attention to the sections on uniform and attendance. In the section on uniform you will find a comprehensive list of our expectations, which may help when purchasing new uniform for the start of term.

The section on attendance clearly explains the procedure for reporting absence, as well as the importance of maintaining high levels of attendance and punctuality. Whilst there are many other things contained within the HGS Parent Handbook, we would ask that you give these sections particular attention to ensure your child makes a great start in September.

Many thanks

Mr Milburn

Lockers

Students have been asked to empty their locker by Friday 12 July and removed their padlock. Any belongings left in lockers will be removed by site staff from Monday 15 July. These items will be placed in lost property and can be collected from main reception.

Please can we ask that all lost property is claimed by Friday 19 July as

there will be no access to lockers or lost property during the summer break. New lockers will be allocated at the start of the academic year during the first week of September. (Mr Milburn and Mr Mungovin)

Nike ‘Air Force’ Footwear

We have made the decision that from September 2019, this particular item of

footwear will not be permitted to wear as part of our school uniform. Although Nike market these as school appropriate footwear, we are wanting students to wear more traditional school shoes. To ensure clarity and consistency for all, our uniform policy has been updated to state that no trainer brands are

permitted as school shoes. Your support is much appreciated with this matter. (Mr Brown and Mr Mason)

Yorkshire Water Safety Message

In hot weather people are often tempted to cool down by taking a swim in our reservoirs. However, cold water can be a killer and we'd like to raise awareness of these risks amongst young people. Cold water shock can lead to hyperventilation,

increased blood pressure, breathing difficulties and heart attacks plus water temperatures remain just as cold in summer as in winter.

We are promoting the ‘Float to Live’ safety message from the Royal National Life Saving Institute (RNLI). In their hard-hitting video, they deliver advice on how to react should you become stricken in cold water. Everyone who falls unexpectedly into cold water wants to follow the same instinct, to swim hard and to fight the cold water. But when people fight it, chances are, they lose. Cold water shock makes you gasp

uncontrollably and breathe in water, which can quickly lead to drowning. If students find themselves unexpectedly in the water, the message is to float until the cold water shock has passed and they will be able to control their breathing and have a far better chance of staying alive. It is important that we share water safety advice with our young people to prevent further incidents

occurring and we would be grateful if you could share this advice with your students.

I have attached below advice from the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and links to two youtube videos which might be of use for assemblies and for sharing in newsletters. • #coldwaterkills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ile-FwNEafk

• #FloatToLive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OBCFEEZe1U

Maths – Puzzler

Last week’s puzzle solution:

On the TV weather forecast today, the presenter said that tomorrow it is going to be twice as hot as it is today. Today, the temperature was 20

degrees Celsius, could the presenter be correct? How hot would it be?

Take a look at the chart below. 20 degrees Celsius (and it’s Kelvin equivalent) are in blue, 40 degrees Celsius (and it’s Kelvin equivalent) are in orange. Kelvin has it’s zero at a point where there is absolutely no heat, so it is a better unit of

measurement to use for this question. So if you double 293.15 degrees Kelvin (20 degrees Celsius) you get 586.3 degrees Kelvin, which is 313.15 degrees Celsius. Short answer: 313.15 degrees Celsius

This week’s puzzle:

Imagine a city is built with 16 skyscrapers in a 4x4 block. Each skyscraper has height of 1, 2, 3 or 4. There is one skyscraper of each height in each row. Can you work out how tall each skyscraper is? The view from the bottom and from the left is shown to help you work it out. An example of a solved block

is provided.

PTA

The PTA has had lots of fun organising and delivering a range of fundraising activities and events over

the past year. We wanted to finish by saying a massive THANK YOU to everybody who has supported

us and helped us raise a grand total of £11,442. Our fundraising has covered;

• The Christmas Dinner dance at the Masonic Hall £1018 • The Christmas shopping evening and raffle combined £1826 • The infamous HGS Old Skool Quiz hosted by our talented quiz master Mr Milburn (and his gold

jacket) £5245 from both quizzes • Gin Festival £858 • 50:50 Club £186 • School uniform Sales £606 • Musical evenings in total raised £1703

The highlight for many of you was the return of Burns Night organised by

the PE department and a willing band of parent helpers which made an additional £2691, which was an amazing amount and is being put towards the purchase of portable flood lights.

There are some PTA funded activities that have become part of the school

tradition, and that hopefully students remember fondly about their school days. The PTA funds the reading book that each year 7 student receives and

the bird of prey experience. We work closely with all the teaching departments, but particularly music and sport and we are delighted that we have been able to pay for football jerseys for both the girls and boys teams. We have also promised a contribution towards a set of new SLR cameras for the photography department. We have paid for a heat press, new Duke of Edinburgh tents and equipment, and new resources for Learning Support. This has come to £4,270.

At our very last meeting we had a presentation from Charlie Gregory who is the new programme leader for Music. She outlined her plans to encourage more students to participate in music in order to have a bigger impact at GCSE and A level/BTEC. We are pleased to say that the PTA agreed to support the music department’s £5000 bid to pay for new musical equipment. We are already planning for the autumn term and have some dates for your diaries.

Tuesday 17 September 6.30pm in sixth form block PTA (and welcome) meeting. This is an opportunity for you to meet the rest of the PTA members, find out what we do and perhaps volunteer to get involved. We always need people to help serve refreshments, clear up after events, secure raffle prizes, come up with great fundraising ideas, help with social media and other promotional work and be part of organising / planning groups.

Friday 18 October Main Hall PTA Old Skool Quiz

If you only come to one event, this has to be the one to choose! Over 280 parents and teachers took part earlier this year and it was a fantastic night, including a fantastic curry from the school catering team. The PTA runs a cash bar on the night selling beer, wine, prosecco and soft drinks.

Tuesday 5 November 6.30pm in sixth form block PTA AGM A look back on a successful year, voting in PTA officers and a chance to hear about future plans.

Thursday 21 November Main Hall Christmas Shopping evening Come and browse a carefully curated, eclectic mix of stallholders selling Christmas gifts, food and drink, clothing and jewellery. A chance to buy family and friends their Christmas presents and stocking fillers before the rush.

Friday 29 November at the Masonic Hall, Harrogate, Christmas Dinner Dance A special Christmas event to look forward to. Get your glad rags on for a night that includes a fizz reception, 3 course dinner and dancing til late. Built by the Masons for the Right Honorable, Earl of Harewood KC, this beautiful building is ours for the evening. Taking place in the atmospheric ballroom, there will be a limited number of tickets, so keep your eye on the school bulletin and Facebook group for further details.

Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you all again in September. If you are not already

part of the group please join Facebook at HGS PTA. You can also follow the school on Twitter @HarrogateGS. Happy holidays! from the PTA - Kirsty, Becky, Margaret and Tracey.
