MESSAGE FMESSAGE FMESSAGE FMESSAGE FROM ROM ROM ROM CHAIRMANCHAIRMANCHAIRMANCHAIRMAN
Our endeavour as always is to help the students to develop an
understanding of the process of change and development-both in terms of
time and space. In the current context of globalization, the school has a
definite and a positive role to play in moulding the student.
We have to be prepared to give more attention to inculcate in the students
a scientific temper by promoting the spirit of enquiry and following a
rational and objective approach. Our school is adequately equipped with
all the facilities to face any challenge of the new age where we ensure that
our wards inculcate good moral and social values, regard for goodness,
fairness, justice, truth, compassion, code of ethics for life, for work,
profession and everyday dealings with others. We ensure that our wards
get an opportunity to face the challenges of life by participating in
competitions at different levels of their school life. We give training to our
wards to maintain emotional as well as mental equilibrium and to be
prepared to match any eventuality without fear.
S. K. SACHDEVA (CHAIRMAN)

BEGINNING OF A BONDBEGINNING OF A BONDBEGINNING OF A BONDBEGINNING OF A BOND…….
Acknowledged as one of the best International schools in Delhi, SGS opens doors
of learning for the tiny tots. True to its motto, “Excellence has No Limits”, SGS
offers world class infrastructure, unmatched academic environment, innovative
teaching techniques, dedicated personalized care and opportunities for a
lifetime of learning. The school’s objective of exposing the students to global
trends at an early stage effectively develops abilities to enable them to meet the
challenges of an ever changing world. We believe in broadening horizons,
encouraging out of the box thinking and problem solving skills right at the initial
years. We motivate students to dream and aspire for the very best in the world
and be the agents of change and progress in the years to come. We inspire
minds and groom personalities to emerge as leaders of the future.
At the onset of the academic journey spanning 14 memorable years, I welcome
the parents and our precious young learners into the fold of SGS family. I
strongly believe that these are the most vulnerable and impressionable years of
their life and every experience counts. I am very grateful to the parents for
placing their trust and faith in us. I would like to assure the parents that their
children will learn and love each day at school. We will leave no stone unturned
to make each day special for them.
The partnership of parents and school is the most significant step towards the
holistic development of the child. I look forward to an association of warmth,
cooperation and understanding which will last much beyond the academic years
of your ward.
Together let’s make the difference.
Mrs. Novita Chopra

The teaching methodology: CBIL and VBIL, i.e. ‘Concept Based Integrated Learning’
and ‘Value Based Integrated Learning’ facilitates the integration of global ideas and
the rich cultural beliefs and values of India. The innovative Curriculum for the Pre-
primary is brought out with the objective of re-enforcing concepts, ideas, skills and
activities at the Pre-primary.
1. ACADEMIC APPROACH:
I. Interactive Approach
Instead of instructing the students about how to do various things, we let them
get hands – on experience by actually doing them. Role plays, enactments and
other interactive and interesting activities form the fundamentals of our
curriculum.
II. Differentiated Instruction Strategy Different types of activities with varying degrees of complexity are provided in
order to focus on different learning styles and developmental levels. The quick
learners are stimulated by follow up exercises and challenging assignments.
Children with different learning abilities are given individual attention, simple
instructions and exposure to different learning aids to which they can respond.
III. Multiple Intelligence Approach
The emphasis in such a program is upon learning rather than teaching. The
students' interests and developmental needs dictate the direction of the
program. Such an instruction model adapts to students, rather than expecting
students to adapt to it.
IV. Home Work Policy Revisiting the work done in the classroom is a must for effective learning. Pre
nursery and Nursery children should read or be encouraged to read for a short
time each day. Children are given some oral/ written activities to complete at
home. Teachers give a home work note for the specific day with instructions in
the students’ diary.
22
V. School Script At SGS, the Marion Richardson Script is followed from the
elementary school onwards. The teachers are given in-house
training in this script so as to enable them to teach the same
effectively.
Marion Richardson was a London Schools Inspector who recommended joining
most but not all letters. The letters are less complex than the print script forms,
they do not have the loops and curls of looped cursive; the most distinctive
forms of the pure Marion Richardson system are the long open / f / and the open
/ b / and / p /.

VI. Assessment
Assessment is an integral part of the education process.
Evaluation is continuous and reveals the strengths and
weaknesses as of the learners frequently so that the
learners have better opportunity to understand and
improve themselves. Our assessment system and promotion rules are consistent
with the concept of continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) developed
by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the
policy envisaged by the Central Board of Secondary Education. It focuses on the
daily interactions in class, level of general awareness, quality of work and
comprehension of concepts taught. Equal importance is given to co-curricular
activities along with academics.
VII. Reading a Report Card
Report cards communicate a child's progress across various areas like working
habits, social skills and thinking skills. The kindergarten report card can be
considered to be a checklist of skills crucial for early learning. Sharing and self-
control are typically evaluated in a "social development" category. Holding a
pencil correctly and using scissors competently are important motor skills. In
your kindergartener's first public school report card, you’ll learn how well he/she
cooperates with adults, participates in group activities, follows direction, and
forms upper- and lowercase letters. Here are some suggestions for making
report card time less scary and more productive.
• Become familiar with the grading system in your child’s grade.
26
• Make sure you understand the different competencies on the report card.
Understand the use of descriptors. If something is not clear to you, ask your
child's teacher.
• As you look at your child's report card, RESIST THE IMPULSE to jump directly
to an area with a lower score. Find an area with a good grade or score and
focus on that first and show your appreciation in that area. Pat your child’s
back.
• Once you've focused on the positive, talk about areas in which your child's
grade is lower. Start a safe, open dialogue with your child about the difficulty
he or she might be having with the subject matter. Give him/her a re-
assuring hug.
• Build up strategies mutually, to help in areas that are difficult for your child.
Is there a requirement of another book that needs to be bought? Is there a
website that can help with the subject specific drills? If you're not sure how
to best help your child, speak to the teacher to take her advice.
• Last, but not the least, let your child know that he/she is more than just a
report card. Tell him/her all the things that make him/her special and
important in your family. Too much focus on grades will only increase the
amount of stress your child undergoes.
Report cards should not contain any huge surprises about how your child is
doing. Most teachers communicate with parents if a child is having a particular
difficulty, whether it's through diary notes or informal phone calls. An open,
ongoing conversation is the best way to manage everyone's expectations.

II) TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE PARENTING
• Encourage your child to take responsibility and
accomplish the given task independently.
• Help your child learn how to express frustration,
disappointments and anger without hurting others
/ retreating into sullenness.
• Speak to your child in the tone along with the words that you wish he would
use with others.
• Clear statements and instructions are understood easily and effectively by
children.
• Listening with your heart allows you to be empathetic, take your child’s
perspective / see the world through his / her eyes before coming to any
conclusion.
• While having a conversation with your child it is important to make the child
feels that he/she has your complete attention and to achieve this you need
to turn off your laptop, keep your phone down and make an eye contact with
him/her.
• Help your child learn about new words or content in a variety of ways.
Talking about the new vocabulary word over the week in various settings will
be a helping hand in enriching the child’s understanding of the word.
• If your child has an assessment/ revision coming up, help him/her study a
little bit each day rather than cramming it in the night before. An hour or so
every other day with spacing out the learning, is a better way to learn the
material.
• Ask your child about his/her day in the school, his/her school work and see
whether it is completed or not. Tell your child that you are proud of the
work he/she is doing.
40
• It's important to answer questions if you can — but remember homework is
supposed to help children learn and you doing your child's homework will act
as a hurdle in the long run.
• Help your child pick out a special homework notebook or folder, and make
sure your child has homework supplies as this will help in developing interest
towards the act.
• Find out what the homework rules are. If your child has a problem
completing or understanding homework, talk to the teacher about the issue.
• Set routines for meals and bed times that will establish stability.
• Have your child help around the house and gain responsibilities instead of
waiting to be served.
• TV viewing is not “bad” but critical choices of what to watch should be made.
Involvement of the child in other activities gives a positive reinforcement to
the overall development of personality.
III) PARENT TEACHER PARTNERSHIP
Parents play the most important role in helping their children learn. When
parents are involved in their children’s education in positive ways, the
children achieve higher grades and test scores, have better attendance at
school, complete more homework, and demonstrate more positive attitudes
and behaviour. By working in partnership with teachers, parents can make a
real difference to their child’s experience of school.
a) Prepare your child for school
Children learn a myriad of skills at school, and parents can help boost their
child’s confidence and development by focusing on some of these areas
which are elucidated below:
• Tell your child how enjoyable school life can be. Talk about making new
friends, playing with new toys, having a nice loving teacher, etc. But refrain
from making any negative comments about school in front of your child.
41
• Introduce your child to other kids of the same class before you hand him /
her over to the school teacher on the first day of the school.
• Take the child along with you when you are purchasing his school books and
other stationery items.
• Pick up a student-teacher game when playing with your child at home. This
way, you can even teach your child some simple school etiquettes.
• Get your child to sleep before time so that you can wake him / her up fresh
next day for school. Prepare for your little one a light but nutritious
breakfast.
b) Share the responsibility for your child’s education
It is possible for parents to work with teachers to foster in children an
enthusiasm for learning. Showing children the value of education,
encourages positive attitudes towards school and helping children realize the
importance of their own education. Few simple solutions are as follows:
• Create a study area or corner for homework. You can start this as early as
kindergartner, and it becomes more important as homework is assigned.
Have a table and chair in a quiet place away from the TV, perhaps in the
corner of a bedroom.
• From kindergartner to high school senior, it’s important to ask students
about their school subjects. Ask open-ended questions about their class work
— questions that can’t be answered with a “yes” or ‘no.” Share any
knowledge you have, and if you are curious, read the textbook!
• Most communication is on paper and is sent home with your child. This
includes reports on your child’s grades, lunch menus, coming events,
newsletters, requests for materials from home, and so on. After you have
read them, save them all in a box, basket, or easy-to-find location. It takes
some effort to make this plan work, but it your student lets know that these
communications from school are important to you.
• Showing an interest in your child’s learning: attending school performances,
or watching / listening to them rehearse at home.
42
c) Partner with your child’s teacher
When children experience a positive link between their
parents and teachers, they are more likely to have a
positive attitude towards school themselves. Steps
towards developing a positive parent-teacher relationship include:
• Be open and frank: teachers appreciate parents who approach them openly
• Raise any concerns you may have with your child’s teacher
• Keep the lines of communication open: the more your child’s teacher knows
about your child’s individual needs, the easier it is for them to adjust learning
and teaching
d) Communication goes two ways
While the parents play the role of a teacher at home it is the teacher who
adorns the role of a parent at school. Parents and teachers work together
most effectively when good communication exists on both sides. Much can
be gained from exchanges where teachers and parents share their
experiences, discuss challenges and come up with solutions together.
Opportunities for these types of discussions can occur both formally (parent-
teacher interviews) and informally.
Parents and teachers are members of the same team, working towards the
best possible education for their children.
43
Consider the teacher as your child’s mentor!
Let’s not be disrespectful towards the TEACHERS of our children. Because
this disrespect seeps in the tender mind and from that very moment listening
towards his/her teacher stops and so does learning. The solution lies in
communication!
