Tips for Managing iPad Usage

Controversial Issues in the Classroom

According to a study conducted by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, “Use of light emitting devices (i.e. iPads, eReaders, tablets, smart phones) at night, decrease sleepiness in the evenings and increase sleepiness in the mornings. In addition to this, it takes individuals hours longer to ‘fully wake up’ and attain the same level of alertness than with individuals who read printed books in the evenings.” This can lead to tardiness, anxiety, depression and irritability throughout the week. High School kids are old enough to understand the rules they need to abide by at home and in school.

Township High School District 214’s primary mission is to enable all students to learn the skills, acquire the knowledge, and develop the behaviors necessary for them to reach their full potential as citizens who can meet the challenges of a changing society. In a democracy that openly confronts acute and pressing political, social, economic, and moral problems, it is likely that such issues will be evident in classrooms. Discussions about these issues provide students with the type of learning experience that will help prepare them to meet the challenges of a global changing society.

Emergency Contact Information

In the unfortunate event that an emergency or crisis situation occurs in our area during the school day, we want you to know that John Hersey High School is prepared. With the help of the Arlington Heights Fire and Police Departments, we have designed a Standardized School Crisis Plan that will assist us in effectively responding to these types of situations.

While your natural instinct as a parent in an emergency is to go to your child’s school to safeguard him/her, please understand that doing so may significantly impede our response capabilities as well as those of our local emergency responders. It is vital that school officials and the Police and Fire Departments have access to our buildings to manage the situation and give care to students. In addition, it may be necessary to evacuate students to another location if there is immediate danger.

In an emergency or crisis situation, we need your cooperation and assistance and ask that you please follow the guidelines below:

! In the event of a crisis that requires an evacuation/relocation of students, contact

(847) 718-7605 for information. In all other emergency situations, contact (847) 718-4800.

! Tune to major local television and radio stations for information on the situation

and instructions on how to reunite with your child. In some emergency or crisis situations, it may be necessary to relocate to another facility for safety reasons. Your designated reunification site is Forest View Educational Center located at 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights.

! When you travel to the reunification site, please be sure to bring picture

identification. We will only release students to their legal guardians, or the authorized individuals as listed on your child’s emergency forms.

Hersey Tip Line Student Services

1st quarter Newsletter John Hersey High School

The student services team is excited to produce this quarterly newsletter to promote the various student service specific curriculum that has been delivered during the first quarter of the 2015-2016 school year. We will also highlight reminders and dates of upcoming events that students and parents will benefit from attending.

Fall Junior Guidance

We helped juniors find colleges with majors that match their career path. Our specific goal for the coming junior guidance program will be to explain and demonstrate to the juniors how to use Naviance to help them "find the right fit" for college. Once they learn how to navigate the program, they will add colleges to their "list". In the spring, we will continue working with the juniors by providing information about the college admission process, which includes standardized testing.

Coffee with the Counselors

This parent program takes place in the morning and is grouped by grade level. We provide important academic, career/college and social/emotional information pertaining to your child’s grade level. The program has 7 sessions per year. All programs start at 7:15 a.m. in the Titre Room.

Upcoming dates:

Wed. - March 2 (Junior Parents) Wed. - March 16 (Frosh Parents) Wed. March 30 (Soph Parents)

Freshman Developmental Guidance (September)

All Counselors assisted students in discovering their individual learning styles and how to best use study strategies in coursework. Additionally, the students developed an academic & social/emotional goal for the 2015-16 school year.

Sophomore Developmental Guidance (September)

All Counselors helped students identify and explore a possible Career Pathway by completing the Career Clusters Inventory in Naviance. Students were also informed of internship opportunities that are available in the district as well as Career Nights and Career Treks. Additionally the students were encouraged to create an academic & social/emotional goal for the 2015-16 school year.
