Cat’s Connection
Principal: Mr. Doug Herron
Asst. Principals: Mrs. Beverly Cornelius Ms. Meredith Durastanti Mr. Willie Gilliard
Principal’s Message:
As this school year comes to a close, I’d like to use this message to once again thank you for your support this year. As I’ve written
in past editions, we really wouldn’t be able to do all of the things that we need to do without the help and support of our parents.
For those of you who volunteered at the school, communicated frequently with teachers, or simply encouraged your child to come to
school and do their best ever, we sincerely thank you.
Have a safe and prosperous summer. We look forward to working with you again next year.
Sincerely,
Douglas Herron Principal

Parent Involvement Parent involvement is crucial to the health and well-being of a child. As a par-
ent, you are the most important influence in your child's success in school and in life. In this role, you have a fresh opportunity every day to get involved with your
child. Parent involvement in children’s education allows kids to perform better in school, and navigate more easily some of the challenges of growing up.
A Way Cool Science Parent Night will be held Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 6:00 pm in the auditorium. Dinner will be served from 5:15-6:00 pm. Hope to see you
there.
There are many Parent Involvement Activi-ties in May and June. Please check the cal-endar and join us for these activities.

Sixth grade math teachers have started preparing their students
for seventh grade. Sixth graders are learning about integers
using number lines. We are beginning a unit on adding, sub-tracting, multiplying, and dividing integers, as well. These
sixth graders will be well prepared for seventh grade next
year!! Parents, please don't forget to check the grade portal to stay informed of your child's grades and missing assignments.
8th grade math is currently working on solving rational num-bers and equations to prepare for the 9th grade.
Algebra classes are working on solving rational numbers, radical numbers, factoring trinomials, and quadratic equations.
Social Studies 6th grade students are studying the Renaissance and Enlight-
enment period, and will study WWI and WWII briefly. Mrs. O
Neal's and Mrs. Stamm's students are studying the Renaissance and Reformation. We are learning about new values, talented
artists, and church reforms. This knowledge will lead us into
the ages of exploration, scientific revolution, the enlighten-ment, and at last, the American Revolution.
7th Grade will be studying India, China, Japan, Australia, Antarctica and they will by refining their Map skills.
8th grade is working on World War I, the Great
Depression, World War 2,
the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, War in Iran, War in
Iraq, War in Afghanistan
and Presidential Election 2012 to finish up our year.

Language Arts and Reading
It's almost time to set sail into
summer. The third round of
FAIR testing is now taking
place. Each grade level is fin-
ishing their grade level novel
studies.
As you prepare for summer
please remember to encourage your child to read over
the summer. We encourage you to check out the events
at the public library.
“Under the Microscope”
Science resource lab students have just finished their studies of various
forms of energy. They are now studying the flow of energy through various types of ecosystems. Students will be making a “Biome” in a bottle after
FCAT testing. Lab students will research an ecosystem of their choice and
decide which type of soil and plants is needed for a successful biome. Each student needs to bring in two 2liter bottles for this project.
Sixth grade students will begin Unit 5 Fusion on Energy, Motion, and Forc-es. Students will learn how to define motion, measure speed, and convert
potential into kinetic energy.
Seventh grade students are studying Heredity and Genetics. They are learn-
ing how to use the Punnett square to predict which genetic traits will be
passed on to offspring. Students will also be studying the stages of cell division in meiosis and mitosis.
Eighth Grade students are completing their studies in chemistry. They have done several labs on the difference between physical and chemical changes
in matter. You probably saw the “Foam Domes” which were an example of
a chemical change. They will now be learning about the cycling of matter
and energy.
