What is the CogAT Test and why did my child need to take it?

The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) measures a child’s learned reasoning abilities. Think of this as the degree of

readiness to learn & perform well in a particular situation- school.

• The information gathered is used as part of the process for placement in the AIG Program.

Second Grade CogAT

CogAT contains three areas: • Verbal ~ The skills needed for reading

comprehension, critical thinking, writing and verbal learning tasks

• Quantitative ~ The ability to work with numbers, mathematical symbols, and problem solving

• Nonverbal ~ The ability to reason by using geometric shapes and figures; create and use strategies for solving the problems

Figure Analysis

The first figure below shows how a square piece of paper is folded and where holes are punched in it. How would the paper look when it is unfolded?

Parent Tips

Activities to help build reasoning and problem solving skills:

Play Scrabble, chess, Boggle, number based games, checkers, dominos, solve the Rubik's Cube and Sudoku puzzles. And yes…play video games!

Create origami, add dialogue to comic strips, do crossword puzzles, build with Legos.

Second Grade CogAT

Students with challenges usually:Struggle with poor memory strategiesNeed basic content knowledgeNeed highly structured learning environmentsRequire repetitive instructionNeed demonstration & modelingNeed to know very basics of what to do step by

stepCan be paired with higher ability students

Second Grade CogAT

Students with strengths usually:Have good knowledge baseAre able to see relationshipsRequire less practiceWill get bored if kept too long on a taskExpect things to have meaningThink of practice and “drill” strategies as of

having little valuePerform best with low structure

Second Grade CogAT

Planning for third grade & gathering information for AIG services

Second Grade CogAT

As AIG facilitator, I:Search the CogAT results for students who

are in the 90th percentile when compared to their age equivalent peers

Gather data from the classroom teachers and parents (Nomination Form)

Invite students who meet the criteria to be further evaluated with a nationally normed achievement test

Share the results with families
