The Oberai School of Integrated Studies
PARENT SPEAK Teachers or Enablers!
Mr. VIKAS MEHTA As a practicing marketer the biggest mantra that was always at the
top of my mind was that evolution is the only constant. Society
evolves, rules evolve, technology evolves and the way we
communicate evolves. Yet, I am surprised that schools, in India at
least, have not really evolved.
If you look at the dictionary meaning of the word schooling, it says,
teaching, instruction, and tutelage. Seriously! Are we still teaching
and instructing our children? Should we be?
Since the last few years I have started visiting some management
institutes all over the country. Not to teach. And I make that very
clear to the students, I have not come to teach. I share. I share my
experiences in marketing, in the corporate world, about the culture,
ethics and behaviour of the consumer in various countries that I was
posted in. My aim is to share so that the management students learn
from a practical viewpoint. They understand theories, not because
they are being taught theories but because my experiences let them
understand the theories.
So, do we share with our children? Or do we teach them? Even at
home, do we instruct them or tell them tales about our childhood,
about what we did right or wrong? Children love tales and stories.
So why don’t we share our stories such that they learn.
And that’s my challenge to The OASIS and its teachers. Do you
want to be called teachers or enablers? Do you want to teach
percentage or how 20% off on their favourite dress means the dress
is now more affordable? Yes, you have to follow curriculum and
have time constraints. But can you evolve into enablers, experience
sharers, knowledge enhancers? Evolution starts with baby steps. Let
The OASIS be at the forefront of it.
Mr. Vikas Mehta has been at the helm of large business groups such as Lowe,
Havas Worldwide Muscat and JWT Delhi. He is an expert in advertising, brand
management and communication. Mr. Mehta is the father of Aarini Mehta (Grade
VIII)

“You’re never alone when you’re reading a book.”
Our school, The OASIS, offers many societies and
clubs to help students inculcate hobbies of
interest. One of these amazing clubs is the ‘Book
Club.’ It helps students to develop and share their
love for a book.
Our Book Club orientation was held. It started
with a game called ‘Toss the Ball, Answer the
Question.’ It was interesting to know other
students’ reviews about books. After this we
were divided into groups and we described our
feelings about books. We also had a discussion
on the Malala Day, which was the day our
book club was held. We later picked chits to
choose authors whose books were read by us for the next half
hour. It is said that reading a book for just thirty minutes a day can make you a very
different person from what you are. Our Book Club makes us wander through magical lands like ‘Narnia’
and ‘Wonderland’ and visit places like ‘Hogwarts.’

Cleanliness is Next to Godliness
We should wash our hands before and after
every meal. We should also clean our
body every day. Just like we keep our
body clean we must keep our
surroundings clean too. So, one day, our
class went on a cleanliness drive and we
cleaned our surroundings.
We took a basket and went around the
school picking up all the clutter. First, we
went to the staff room and cleaned it. After
which we went to the offices and cleaned
them. We picked all the plastic, which came
off the new furniture and put it in a recycle
bin to be sent for recycling. We ended the
drive by planting a tree.

JAMin’ It
My school is in the middle of a forest. We can see big mountains from our school. We often hear birds
chirping in the morning when we come to school. There is a temple on the mountain, which can be seen
from our school and one day we plan to trek to it. A river flows near our school. This is the Song River and
we can sometimes hear it flowing. Farming is done in our school. We grow flowers here. There is a shed
where cows are kept. We get milk from the cows. There are big trees and a lot of greenery around the school.
There is no plastic around our school.

The ’Just-A-Minute’ Inter-House Competition was held on 19
July, 2018. It was also the first competition that took place at The
OASIS. Rules were simple. A team of two represented their
house. The two participants were given twelve diverse topics on
which they needed to prepare a talk of one minute. At the time of
the competition the participants took turns to pick chits to choose
their topic which they presented after a preparation time of two
minutes each. Each participant was judged on the basis of
content, clarity, fluency and confidence. First and second runners
up were Aarini (VIII) and Mayuri (VII). The winner of the event
was Tarana Kapur (VII). The overall winner was Daivik House.

New Beginnings It started at 6:00 am. I heard the buzz of my alarm,
jumped out of bed and got ready to see what the day
had in store for me. When I got into the van waiting for
me at the bus stop, I met a whole new group of students
and teachers. On the way to school we talked like we
had known each other forever. On reaching we
attended a prayer ceremony where we wished for a
successful year ahead. We then went to our
classrooms eager to make some new friends. A short
while after that, it was time for our very first art class followed by a break. We all got a
snack and played a fun game of ‘Chinese Whispers’ before heading to the music class. Our music teacher
taught us a few songs. Later, classes 6, 7 & 8 went on a campus tour where we explored the school. After that
we had an ‘ice - breaking session’ in our classroom where our class teacher, Mrs.Stuti Paul taught us how to
make a beautiful pen stand out of origami paper. We all got to express our idea with a very encouraging
teacher by our side. We then went for lunch to satisfy our hunger. Our day ended with a class with our sports
teacher and then we were in the van, going home with fond memories and we knew it was a day well spent
and had much to look forward to.

Little People Big Talent On the Orientation Day we were informed by our class
teacher that there would be a Talent Unveil Show on the
13th of July in our school. We started our practice a week
before the show. My class teacher informed me that I would
be one of the hosts. I was very happy to know this. I also
took part in the show. I presented a dance on the song ‘Nach
Dene Sare.’ There was music, storytelling and all
participated in the show. The Chairman, Mr. Rakesh Oberai, the Director, Mr. Raghav Oberai, the
Headmaster, Mr. Sanjiv Bathla and the Head of Junior School, Mrs. Natascha Bathla, were all there to
encourage us. Everybody enjoyed the talent show and I was very happy to be the hostess.

We had an Art Gala’ in our school on 25th and 26th July.
We were asked to draw a picture of ‘A Rainy Day.’
Pictures were displayed on the smartboard and we had
to choose one out of them to draw. The first picture
was of a girl holding an umbrella in her hand. The
second picture was of a road where there was a car
and a bus. There was also a man walking with an
umbrella and a woman wearing a raincoat. The third
picture was of a girl walking alone. In the fourth picture there was just one
umbrella kept on the grass. All of us drew the picture of our choice and coloured them in different colours. All
of us drew nice pictures. The teachers were very happy when they saw all the drawings. All of us like to draw
and paint

Cultivating a hobby is important, but it is equally
important to display the unique talents, which we have in
us. Our school understands the same and helped us by
giving us this platform titled ‘The Talent Unveil Show
2018’. This gave a chance to all amazing actors, multi-
talented musicians and dancing dudes to go up on stage.
They swept us off our feet and surprised us with their
talents. We also got the opportunity to see our activity
teachers perform. Witnessing the event, I could gather
that every single one of us is unique and special in our
own way. Everyone tried to show their best. The show
was held to make us believe in our talents and to help us decide what we were interested in.

Tapping Potential
To Learn by Doing
My favourite haunt in school is the Discovery Lab. It is a
place where I have freedom to do whatever I want. It is in one
of the big rooms of the school which means I have a large
space to do things in. Large spaces help to explore more and
be creative. Making robots is what I like best. I collect all the
junk from my school and assemble them to make things that I
have thought of. I even play with clay to make different
cartoon characters. I make graphics on the computer and take
printouts of the best ones. I love the time spent in the Lab.

I was very excited to start attending my new school, The OASIS. I was even more excited when I was
informed about the talent unveil show in which I chose
to dance. I was happy but also nervous. I started my
practice and my teacher taught me various steps. The
steps she taught were simple. I danced to the famous
song, ‘Na Jaane.’ I practiced my steps repeatedly at
home and my teacher told me that she liked my dance
very much. I danced confidently at the show when my
turn came. Everyone liked my dance which made me
very happy.

Dedication, Discipline, Defence Wushu is an international sport governed by the ‘International Wushu Federation.’ Wushu has been
included in School Games Federation of India (SGFI), All India University Games, World University
Games, All India Police Games, National Games, Asian Games, South Asian Games, Lusofonia Games,
Commonwealth Games, Brics Games and the Olympics. Wushu is a game of agility, strength and
concentration. There are two basic types of Wushu: The first is ‘Taolu’, in which a player shows bare
hand and weapon demonstration. The second type is ‘Sanda’ which is a modern fighting method and a
full contact sport. It includes boxing, kicking and wrestling. I have taken up Wushu as a sport in school
and our coach makes sure that in every lesson we learn a new technique to master. It requires immense
strength and thus my previous knowledge of judo has made it easier for me.

Snapshot On July 10, we attended a photography session in which we
discussed about various types of cameras such as the DSLR,
the SLR and even pocket cameras. We learned about
different photography genres including candid and fashion
photography. I click a lot of photos and enjoy this hobby a
lot. My personal favourites are candid shots and nature
photographs. I find photography interesting because it helps
me discover new things. The different angles of the lens help
me see things from various perspectives. I also get to keep
memories forever and have something of that day to
remember it by. Photography is a hobby which requires
concentration, focus and control. It is an amazing activity
and I feel everybody should try it. It is not necessary to have
a DSLR and huge lenses. One could just use a pocket camera
or even the camera on one’s phone. So, I would say,
everybody should try photography, at least once.
